Today’s job was another reminder that not every exhaust problem means replacing the whole system. At Pellon Tyres in Halifax, we always inspect the complete exhaust before recommending any repairs. In this case, a smart-looking red Nissan Micra arrived at our workshop with a noisy exhaust that had clearly seen better days.
Our experienced tyre and exhaust fitter, Adam, carried out a thorough inspection and found that the problem was simply a worn-out rear back box. The rest of the exhaust system was still in remarkably good condition, so there was absolutely no need to replace parts that still had plenty of life left in them. The Nissan Micra has been one of Britain’s best-loved small cars for over forty years. First arriving in the UK during the early 1980s, it quickly earned a reputation for reliability, affordability, and low running costs. One of the biggest turning points came in the early 1990s when the famous K11 Micra was introduced. It was such a success that it won the prestigious European Car of the Year award in 1993, beating many much larger and more expensive competitors. That achievement helped cement Nissan’s reputation across Europe.
Perhaps even more importantly for Britain, many Micras were built right here in the North East at Nissan’s Sunderland manufacturing plant. Over the years, the factory has become one of the most productive car manufacturing plants in Europe.
The Sunderland plant has provided employment for thousands of skilled workers while supporting many thousands more jobs through local suppliers, transport companies, and engineering businesses across the country. Every Micra built there represented another success story for British manufacturing.
Although production has moved on to newer Nissan models today, the Micra played a huge role in establishing Sunderland as one of Britain’s automotive success stories. It’s something we should all be proud of.

Every time you start your engine, water vapour is produced as a natural by-product of combustion. Until the exhaust becomes fully hot, that moisture collects inside the silencer and back box.
If the vehicle mainly makes short journeys, the water never completely evaporates. Over time it sits inside the exhaust and slowly rusts the metal from the inside out.

The back box had reached the end of its working life, but the remaining sections were still perfectly serviceable. Replacing only the faulty part was the sensible and economical solution.
