Nice Triumph Spitfire; No wheel alignment ?
Eric Roberts 8/7/2011. wheel alignment.
During the week I was walking through my garage work area. I spotted a very nice Triumph Spitfire on a ramp having a wheel alignment by one of my mechanics Dale Linton. I could hardly believe my eyes, this was a fine specimen of a car.
This model was now classed as a vintage car here in the UK. Never the less it still looked good to day against our modern sports cars. Cars such as the small Mazda’ s. This particular car had been really looked after and restored by its owner. He had brought the car to us for two General tyres and a wheel alignment. I had a conversation with the owner as this car brought back fond
memories of my youth and I think it was my second car although I am sure that I had a couple of minis before upgrading to a Triumph Spitfire, my first “sports car”.
My spitfire experience was short lived however. I remember fitting two new 155×13 Dunlop tyres to the front. However for some reason in those days,(mid sixties) we did not do any wheel alignment , in a general tyre fitting bay, It was due to go to the garage to be done as this was a job for a regular garage and the two kinds of businesses operated separately, not like to-day where we are classed as auto centres and now do all car work under one roof. I was to have the wheel alignment done after the three day holiday.
Nice Triumph Spitfire
Anyway after having my new tyres fitted I set off to a seaside resort in Yorkshire UK called Scarborough, (it was a pilgrimage for young people to visit the resort on most bank holidays, here in the North of England), I met up with some friends in a small village at a party, but we decided to leave the party and go into Scarborough for the evening fun.
I set off in my gleaming “spitfire” and my friend followed in his old Austin Cambridge,(now another vintage car). We headed for the main A64 route into the resort, we went down a small country road and round a sharp bend . We came across the A64 at great speed, I slammed all on with the brakes but my friends car would not stop crashing into the back of me. Luckily no one was hurt, but both cars were “write off’s”.
Never did get my “wheel alignment”
My Nice Triumph Spitfire was a write off after only three weeks of ownership. My car was towed back to Dewsbury and it never got the wheel alignment done at garage what a sad day.
