“MICHELIN TYRES” the great Success Story.(Then came Pirelli Tyres)

MICHELIN TYRES

The Michelin X tyre was developed from an idea and then an invention by American named Arthur W Savage. Tyre companies in America were not interested in the idea of radial tyres. Other tyre companies were still developing the bias belted tyre for use on their large “gas guzzling”cars. But when Savage visited Europe he received a warm welcome and his invention was well received.

Pirelli

Early MGBs were fitted with 165×14 Pirelli Cinturato textile radials

and indeed taken up by

Michelin tyres.

The rest of story is in my previous blogs. The next tyre company to try to emulate the great French tyre company was Pirelli tyres of Italy.

Part 3; Catch Up Time first “Pirelli Tyres”

Pirelli tyres were one of the first European tyre companies. Thus, to try catch up with them and in 1951 introduced the now famous Pirelli Cinturato tyre. Michelin Tyres UK  had tried to protect the copy write of the radial tyre.

The Pirelli Cinturato was first made of “Rayon cords”. Thereby, better known as a textile radial. The original tyre came out as the Cinturato CF57 and quickly became a favourite of many top car makers especially in Italy. Companies the like of Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati were all fitted with Pirelli tyres.

Pirelli tyres and sports cars became a great combination. Pirelli still use the cinturato symbol on its tyres. Such as the Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus and were always looking over their shoulders at Michelin tyres .

MICHELIN TYREs

The two tyre companies became great rivals. Pirelli tried to increase their size by merging with other tyre companies. They tried merging with Dunlop and Continental but increased its capacity by buying Armstrong tyres of America .Pirelli tyres were also fitting original equipment tyres to marques such as Aston Martin and Jaguar giving their product a very high profile image. The first time that i came across the famous Cinturato tyres  were fitted to the MGB cars in the mid sixties.

The main problems were on the early Jaguars, i remember having to take these cars to the Dunlop depot in Leeds where a Dunlop technician would have to skim some rubber off the tread area to make the tyre round enough to balance them on a regular wheel balancer.

Pellon Tyre and Autocentre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

Pirelli tyres are now available from www.pellonautocentre.com/tyres.htm online with free fitting in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.
