Original Goodyear aquatred lost grip as the tyre wore down
So, in 1991 Goodyear tyres took the tyre world by storm. Of course, by introducing the “Goodyear Ultragrip GW3”. Chiefly, this tyre was to combat the problem of aquaplaning. This was designed to disperse the layer of water that builds up between the tread and the wet road surface. So, making motoring in the wet much safer than it had previously been.
The first tyres were good when their tread was new. But as the tread wore down, then the centre groove “that was a major part of the design”. Hence, lost its depth, thus not allowing the water to get away as quickly. Meaning, that the tyre became less responsive as it wore down in wet weather.
To combat this Goodyear Aquatred tyres were modified by design
Goodyear tyres recognised
Of course they knew that they had a problem with the new tyre. Notably, they brought out the “Goodyear Aquatred 2 “ tyre. This tyre was re-designed and was brought out with a harder compound. Solving the problem of the tyres wearing quickly.
So, the new tread compound was enhanced by the inclusion of a wider and deeper band. Of course, down the centre of the tread pattern. Of course, the new tyre also had a modified shoulder.Aiming the tyre at the family saloons and were available from 13 to 15 ins tyre sizes.
To be sure, the Goodyear aquatred had many advantages over the normal summer tyres. It was far superior in braking and accelerating whilst driving in wet conditions at fast speeds. The tyre was very suitable for very wet countries such as us in Britain and became very popular.
The tyre was a great success in Northern Europe
Because of its performance in the wet weather. Then in my opinion, became a safer place.Because of the extra safety features that this tyre brought to us. The tyre was also very quite to ride on although it had a very heavy tread pattern compared to other standard tyres. Millions of people liked the new security that the tyre offered, and although not a cheap tyre it sold very well, giving families piece of mind, especially in wet weather, the kind of weather that we are experiencing at the moment, very heavy rain with flooding. They were also good in snow and ice conditions, and were originally going to be launched to coincide with the Winter Olympics .
Goodyear aquatred brought out No 3 in 2000
The concept of a directional tyre that dispersed water at a fast rate continued with the advance of the Goodyear aquatred 3 tyres. This tyre was not much different to its predecessor. It had more refined noise levels and better grip, but by then other tyre companies were bringing out tyres of similar design and the Goodyear aquatred family just drifted away and Goodyear Car Tyres took another path in its tyre development program.
