The giant Italian tyre company were given a “Good” in recent tyre tests. Thus, the tests were carried out by the German motoring magazine “AUTO-BILD.”. Hence, the   tests were carried out by using 19565T15 tyre size. Thus, on a VW Golf saloon. Consequently, the Pirelli Snowcontrol 2 were superb in slush and snow conditions.

A similar test was carried out on the Pirelli winter products. Hence this time by another European motoring magazine “AUTO-ZEITUNG”.  This is excellent for a tyre test.

The Pirelli Snowcontrol 2 is a directional tyre, having sipes (the small slits in the tread that help to dissipate the water or snow and slush) running across the treat and also longitudinally around the tread. This enables the Pirelli Snowcontrol 2 to clear away the water slush or snow, very quickly thus enabling the tyre to grip and offer stable driving conditions in inclement weather.

Winter Performance With, Pirelli Snowcontrol Winter Tyres

For that reason, the tyres are quieter because of the thin sipe technology used in this tyre. Accordingly, Pirelli Snowcontrol 2 tyres are available from www.pellonautocentre.com online at discount prices.

Pirelli Cinturato Radial Tyres-“Born”from Lancia Cars

Pirelli radial tyres were born from the need of Lancia Rally division. Hence, who wanted a stronger lower riding radial tyre for their “Lancia Stratos” rally car. Accordingly, this leads the designers to create a much more durable tyre construction. As a result, both wider and with a much lower side wall. Hence, this Pirelli Cinturato design became very successful. Of course, giving a significant boost toLancia racing”. Indeed Porsche also started to use the Pirelli Cinturato tyre in its racing division.

Pirelli Cinturato to compete with the steel of Michelin

The new Pirelli design leads to the creation of the Pirelli Cinturato. This tyre was created in the 1950s.Therefore, and was originally made from a textile belted construction. This tyre gave great comfort and road holding qualities but as for all textile construction tyres was a little low on mileage and could not compete with some of its rivals namely Michelin who were streets ahead with their steel belted X range of tyres.

Eric Roberts remembers fitting these Pirelli Cinturato tyres in the 1960 s. Eric, was a tyre fitter in Dewsbury. These tyres were mounted on Lancias and for some strange reason were fitted to some MGBs.

The earlier Pirelli Cinturato were used as original equipment on most Italian-made production cars such as the Alfas;

Pirelli Cinturato tyres mounted on MGB GTs

Eric remembers the first time he saw these tyres. They were very unusual at the time.Hence, but things were changing fast in the world of tyres. and we were not that surprised at what came along next”. Thus, the most common size been the 165×14. Pirelli now competes on the World stage with the steel belted radial fitted to modern cars.

“MICHELIN TYRES” the great Success Story.(Then came Pirelli Tyres)

MICHELIN TYRES

The Michelin X tyre was developed from an idea and then an invention by American named Arthur W Savage. Tyre companies in America were not interested in the idea of radial tyres. Other tyre companies were still developing the bias belted tyre for use on their large “gas guzzling”cars. But when Savage visited Europe he received a warm welcome and his invention was well received.

Pirelli

Early MGBs were fitted with 165×14 Pirelli Cinturato textile radials

and indeed taken up by

Michelin tyres.

The rest of story is in my previous blogs. The next tyre company to try to emulate the great French tyre company was Pirelli tyres of Italy.

Part 3; Catch Up Time first “Pirelli Tyres”

Pirelli tyres were one of the first European tyre companies. Thus, to try catch up with them and in 1951 introduced the now famous Pirelli Cinturato tyre. Michelin Tyres UK  had tried to protect the copy write of the radial tyre.

The Pirelli Cinturato was first made of “Rayon cords”. Thereby, better known as a textile radial. The original tyre came out as the Cinturato CF57 and quickly became a favourite of many top car makers especially in Italy. Companies the like of Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati were all fitted with Pirelli tyres.

Pirelli tyres and sports cars became a great combination. Pirelli still use the cinturato symbol on its tyres. Such as the Pirelli Cinturato P7 Plus and were always looking over their shoulders at Michelin tyres .

MICHELIN TYREs

The two tyre companies became great rivals. Pirelli tried to increase their size by merging with other tyre companies. They tried merging with Dunlop and Continental but increased its capacity by buying Armstrong tyres of America .Pirelli tyres were also fitting original equipment tyres to marques such as Aston Martin and Jaguar giving their product a very high profile image. The first time that i came across the famous Cinturato tyres  were fitted to the MGB cars in the mid sixties.

The main problems were on the early Jaguars, i remember having to take these cars to the Dunlop depot in Leeds where a Dunlop technician would have to skim some rubber off the tread area to make the tyre round enough to balance them on a regular wheel balancer.

Pellon Tyre and Autocentre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

Pirelli tyres are now available from www.pellonautocentre.com/tyres.htm online with free fitting in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.

Pirelli Van Tyres-New Tyre Range for Camper Van Tyres from Pirelli Tyres

Famous Italian tyre-makers Pirelli Van Tyres have brought out a new range of tyres

Meeting the needs of the modern van and the new van driver. Vans can now do much faster speeds with higher payloads and so need the van tyres to cope with these conditions. Some vans can now carry payloads of up to 3.5 tonnes and require tyres with the capacity to carry these higher loads at faster speeds.

Pirelli Van Tyres “Chrono” van tyre

The new Chrono tyre has been developed by Pirelli Van Tyres .To cope with the demands of the smaller type delivery vans such as the Ford Transit Connect. These smaller types of vans have to deal with increased robustness. While driving at higher speeds. These vans have higher comfort levels for the drivers. In fact, modern vans are not far behind cars in the comfort stakes. Therefore the tyres have to be more flexible. They contain the correct compound for when the vans are loaded and unloaded. At the same time, the tyre must be able to carry loads at speed while also keeping a good mileage record; these vans are working vans, and tyre economy comes into the equation.

pirelli van tyres

The new  Chrono Pirelli Van Tyres lives up to all these standards and is available in wheel sizes from 14inch to 17inch.

Pirelli Van Tyres “Chrono” Camper Van Tyre.
This next tyre in the Italian tyre maker’s range is created for the camper van type vehicle. Camper van tyres are also a must for the Motor Home sector. These tyres have a reinforced structure specially designed for these cars. This structure increases the tyre life from the risk of so-called “flat spots”, which happen when the camper is parked, and then proceeds on its journey at speed.
This tyre also gives improved stability during cornering with higher levels of grip. All in all an excellent product to buy for your tourer and motorhome. The Pirelli Van Tyres come in sizes for 15 inches and 16-inch wheels.

Pirelli “Chrono”4 seasons and “Chrono” Winter tyres

They have also developed the “4 seasons” tyre for use in a regular winter a little of all kinds of weather as in a typical winter. The winter tyre is made to cope with more severe conditions. Load and speed capabilities are of the same standards as the other “Pirelli Van Tyres Chrono” products in the range. Both are excellent products coping with all a winter can throw at them.

Easter Getaway for-Caravaners-Check Your “Caravan and Motorhome Tyres”before your journey

Easter Getaway for-Caravaners can not stress the importance of your caravan tyres.

Us tyre experts recommend that owners of any trailer vehicles should remove the complete wheel or wheels and take them to their favourite garage or auto centre and have them checked by a professional member of the team, it is important that the wheels  are given a thorough inspection, this will ensure the safest possible

Eater Getaway for-Caravaners

Easter Getaway for-Caravaners; Scenes like this are all too familiar and many are caused by tyres problems

outcome. The most common thing found on caravan tyres is sidewall cracking. This usually only comes to light when the tyre is removed, we can flex the sidewall with the tyre removed from the wheel, and this will show the extent of the cracking. This problem is due to the effect of ultraviolet light acting on the carbon black in the makeup of the tyre when the caravan is parked and is more common in Old Michelin tyres.      This information also applies to motorhomes.

The wheels will be checked for corrosion and the tyres will be removed from the wheels and checked for internal cuts and damage, this is most important as unseen damage can become a nightmare scenario when going down a motorway at sixty mile per hour and losing complete control due to tyre failure.

The tyre dealer will then check the outside of the for damage to the tread area and the sidewalls for cuts and cracks. Also important is to check the age of the tyre, this can be easily done by an expert fitter.Tyres do become out of date after six years and are affected by ageing in the sidewalls.
As stated above cracks start to form around the rim area due to the caravan wheels been stood in the Sun for long hours during the Summer months and eventually the carbon black, that is used in the manufacture of the caravan  tyres, starts to break down and small but deep cracks start to form around the rim area and will eventually join up to create a very dangerous hazard, indeed this is one of the most common cause for tyre blowouts on caravans and trailers. Any caravan tyres with cracks and cuts should be scrapped and replaced with a new tyre. Finally, if everything is OK the pressures and tyre valves should be checked for the correct loading of your vehicle and trailer.

Another important point is to have the vehicle loading checked on your caravan tyres,

to make sure that the wheel set up conforms to your caravan or trailers recommended weight carrying capacity. Some of the larger heavier vehicles require more heavy duty tyres to carry the extra loading, your tyre dealer will advise you on the correct fitments by advising you fit either General re-enforced or larger ply rated ones.
Tyre pressures should always be checked and adjusted when the pressures are cold before every journey. If in doubt, replace with new and correct  caravan tyres.

Pirelli Tyres History – famous for the manufacture of both tyres and underground cable they were founded in Milan in Italy in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli.

Pirelli tyres have been making tyres for over 100 years and although Eric Roberts from Pellon Tyre and Autocentre has not been around for that long, he says”that in all his experience in the tyre trade these Italian  tyres have always given motorists good service and good mileage, and are one brand name that commands respect and loyalty amongst the Pirelli tyres users”. Pirelli Tyres- Top Investor- Camfin Said to Discuss Sale to ChemChina – Bloomberg

Pirelli Tyres

Pirelli’s Top Investor Camfin Said to Discuss Sale to ChemChina
Bloomberg
The talks come as larger competitors Michelin & Cie. and Continental AG seek to expand with acquisitions, particularly in Asia.

This is not as surprising as i first thought. China will,be looking to buy existing western global companies, to increase their product knowledge and their world portfolio.

This offer for a large part of Pirelli tyres does not come as any surprise in the chase for global dominance,

Including the tyre market. We have already seen the Apollo, Indian tyre companies lust for expansion, and the Chinese will also be active in the takeover battle for some of our leading European tyre companies.

http://www.pellontyres.co.uk/Tyre/Brand/1293/PIRELLI

It comes as no surprise to me that Pirelli tyres have now come into the hands of the Chinese state owned company ChemChina.

Like all the other leading tyre companies, Pirelli have developed tyre technology for over a hundred years and will bring the boost of the fifth largest tyre company in the world under the Chinese fold.

The 7.5 billion Euros bid was agreed by the Pirelli shareholders, was agreed by shareholders last Sunday.

There is no doubt that the Chinese have bought giant Italian tyre company for a few reasons, one because of the week Euro and also, they will then have access to Pirelli tyres technology

pirelli tyres

Pirelli tyres are great participants of motorsport from F1 cars to small rally events. like the one in the image.

for making premium tyres and also motorsport technology for future research and development.

ChemChina have already developed a tyre making facility.

Known as the China National Tyre and Rubber Company, who will go into a joint venture and bid to buy the 26.2% stake of Pirelli from the Italian holding firm of Camfin and a bid for the rest of the tyre company, will follow.

Pirelli boss Tronchetti Provera is one of the Camfin investors and he is expected to remain as chief executive. This type of takeover has been part of my working life in the tyre industry.

Of course ,the difference is that it is now China and not the USA that are buying the assets of European tyre makers. Goodyear tyres were always buying out smaller niche tyre manufacturers to add to their portfolio.

In more recent years, Apollo tyres from India have been a dominating force. So, in trying to increase the size of their tyre business by making takeover bids. Consequently, such as their recent acquisition of Vredestein tyres, with a manufacturing base in Holland.

There were even reports coming out of Italy that, that a counter bid may even be coming from one of the other big European tyre companies, either Continental tyres of the French tyre maker Michelin.

It will now be a case of “watch this space “to see how the Chinese takeover will improve Pirelli’s standing in the global tyre market, but there is one thing sure, and that’s the Chinese sure aren’t short of money and could be looking for a large tyre retailer to distribute the Pirelli product more aggressively? Or, a large wholesaler perhaps?

RT @MissEvans2010: Take me back! Exclusive development story on Pirelli’s new all-season rubber: http://t.co/4XUHOWRqpr #Pirelli #Tyres htt…

Pirelli tyres are grabbing a chance to supply the growing popularity of winter and all-season tyres amongst European drivers for winter use.

http://www.pellontyres.co.uk/Tyre/Brand/1293/PIRELLI

Pirelli tyres go for new technology compounds

There is no doubt about it that there has been a massive shift in direction, as regards the public changing to winter tyres or all-season tyres, before the winter arrives here in the UK and the rest of northern Europe. Some countries, such as Germany, have to fit winter tyres by law, but the UK relies on common sense from many of its vehicle drivers.

In fact according from figures issued by the tyre industry the number of winter tyres fitted to our vehicles, will have doubled between a five year periods of 2013 to 2015.In my opinion Pirelli have not been as active as the could have been in the winter tyre market, but they now hope to make amends with the Pirelli Cinturato All-Season tyre. This tyre is also

Pirelli Tyres

Pirelli scorpion winter all traction

available with the new tyre seal system, that ads another safety feature to the tyre, by making the tyre practically puncture proof.

This new tyre will have the three snow flake winter tyre marking and so it will be good in the snow as well as a normal wet winter that we would see in the southern European countries, making the tyre a true all-season tyre. Pirelli Tyres of course has a number of what you could call full winter tyres, as we know them.

Pirelli tyres Scorpion Winter traction

Other tyres from the Pirelli winter range include the “SCORPION™ WINTER” which have been especially  designed to fit modern SUVs and CUVs, for the use of winter motoring, with a special emphasis on the upper end class of vehicle, including the SUV’s and cross-over vehicles. The main reason for this tyre was to control better down-hill braking and cornering in snow and other winter road conditions, whilst keeping total control of your vehicle. These were especially designed with the larger size tyres fitted to the likes of the BMW and Mercedes people carriers, to help in bad winter weather conditions.

Pirelli tyre Winter Sottozero series 3

These asymmetric winter tyres has been developed with the high performance and sport car market in mind. The “WINTER SOTTOZERO™ SERIE 111” will guarantee a top performance weather you are driving on dry roads at speed such as on a motorway, or on a snow covered mountain pass, on your way to the ski slopes. Like winter tyres from most other tyre companies .This tyre has a special compound that gives the tyre great flexibility in a temperature of 7 degrees and below, giving the tyre a better grip in the cold and snow.

Pirelli tyres Winter Snowcontrol 3

This will be the winter tyre for the, what I would call the average car, that has to perform in colder climates or say drivers living in hilly and mountainous regions. This tyre is made in

smaller sizes to fit the average cars and I would say that they are a step ahead of the new Pirelli All-Season tyres, for the guy in a more extreme environment, say the difference between Scotland and the south of England.
