Winter Tyre Preparations

It is very rare that we experience, what you could call “extreme” weather here in the UK. Perhaps people who live in parts of Scotland wont agree with me. But in general snow comes and goes within a couple of days. As I am writing this post then the weather is expected to turn colder with a possible snow fall t the end of the week.

However it will be nothing like the type of weather that is experience in the USA. Especially in the north and east of the country. This is the reason for me sharing this article from Ready.gov. So, it lists hundreds of things that we should prepare. Hence, to cope with expected extreme cold and snow storms.

I remember watching a film from around the time of the American civil war. A family were snowed in for months. OK they lived in the mountains in the middle of know where, but the experience must have been daunting to say the least. These days we have a machines that get us out of such situations. people will still be cut off, but possibly for not as long.

Winter Tyre Preparations

Of course, this brings me around to one of my favorite subjects”Tyres”? I do know that in our modern times, people just have to move about. They will get to town whatever it may take. Many drivers now own 4×4’s and huge SUV’s to enable them to get about. Of course these machines would have to have winter tyres fitted.

Especially when snow falls on a regular occurrence. In places like Canada then snow chains are also used to help drivers get about as best as possible. Winter tyres are now one of the best aids for getting through winter safely. Of course we are now stockists of the Nokian winter tyre brand. Nokian claim to be the inventor of the winter tyre. Back in Finland it is extremely cold with continuous heavy snowfalls and this is where winter tyres originally came from.

Mixing Tyre Technologies

The question posed by this article in “The Business Times” is about the mix of tyre manufacturers technologies. Hence when it comes to mixing different tyre brands to the larger and now popular SUV vehicles. In my opinion it is yet another grey area in the crazy world of tyres. “Should we do this” and “can we do that” is a question that I hear every week.

So, the advent of the SUV has certainly opened up a new can of worms. Over the last decade tyre manufacturers have introduced a string of new tyre products. Consequently, pressure was brought on the tyre makers from governments wanting the car manufacturers to make greener and leaner cars. As a result, then tyres had to become lighter in weight and larger in circumference to give less “rolling resistance“.

Coincidentally, the SUV’s came out about the same time. The SUV’s had much larger tyres and it looks to me that new technology tyres were to be developed with these vehicles in mind.

Tyre makers were looking for all types of new materials to add to the rubber latex. Thus, trying to lighten the tyre weight. Continental tyres came up with the milk like substance extracted from “dandelions“. It was found that the milky substance found in the dandelion was of the same molecular make up as the latex . Now Continental are growing vast areas of these plants near their German tyre factories.

Mixing Tyre Technologies

Other finds include the Yokohama tyres use of orange peel oil. However I dont really want to get too technical. The issue is should we mix these different tech tyres on the same vehicle. Especially if the tyres were developed along side the car manufacturers. Of course the SUV’s are now big and powerful, made by all the worlds leading luxury car makers.

Have we now got to the stage when it is important that we stick to the same tyres as the original equipment ones. As a tyre dealer for over forty years, then I am beginning to think so. The attached article explains about the specific tyres that are made for certain SUV’s. Thus, tyres like the Bridgestone Alenza and Italian brand Pirelli’s Scorpion series.

This class of vehicle are also fitted with specific tyres such as the Yokohama Blu-earth RV-02. So, even Nokian are making a winter tyre for the SUV the Nokian WR SUV 3 tyres. Should the specific tyre types be compromised. Personally I do not think so?

When I am on the front line dealing with customers, then I always tell them to the best of my ability. In this case then I would recommend that the car should be on the same tyres that were fitted as original equipment. If they choose not to then it is their responsibility going forward. I suppose looking at it then this is a problem with buying your SUV tyres online.

Mixing Tyre Technologies

The registration number lookup only tells the buyer the size of the tyre and not what the SUV should have on. Subsequently, the best way is for the car owner to take the information from the tyre sidewall and order exactly the same tyres. Definitely a very grey area?

Of course, it is always good to see accreditation’s given to quality products. Nokian tyres are no exception to this. gaining an approval to fit certain Nokian tyres as original equipment to some BMW models.

The tyre that Nokian are to supply BMW with is the excellent WR D4 winter tyre. Consequently, the tyre will be fitted as original equipment to BMW’s latest “Sports Activity Vehicle” or SAV. Yet another abbreviation to remember?

The tyre size to be used is the 225/55R17 in a “H” rated tyre. As a Nokian tyre dealer this is great news.

My wife and I decided to buy an up market car last year and went for the Jaguar F Sport. We were sick of turning up to meetings in a van?

Anyhow, I decided to fit a set of Nokian winters to the car. So, just to try them out so to speak. I firmly believe that any brand of winter tyres should be fitted before the onset of winter.

My main worry was to be noise the Jaguar F Sport is a very quiet car even on some of our concrete motorways. We went on to fit a set of 255/55V19 XL  Nokian WR SUV 3 tyres. Wow, the results were excellent. Remarkably, we found that there was no difference in road noise at all. In fact we have now had three snowfalls in the area and many freezing nights resulting in “black ice”. The car has never lost traction once. I always feel more confident when selling a product with my own personnel experience. My new Nokians did not disappoint me ?

When SUV’s first came out then it soon became noticeable that they were useless when driving in snow. Especially here in hilly Halifax. So, BMW and Mercedes owners were soon looking for winter tyres to give their vehicles some traction in the snow, ice and wet roads. As a result SUV owners are now more street wise and the Nokian and vredestein winter tyres are among their favorite choices.

In years gone by, then winter tyres were made to look like tough tyres that gripped in snow. However, these tyres were probably made from the same materials as summer tyres. Older drivers amongst us have many concerns about the effectiveness of winter tyres. Hence some consumers think that these type of tyres wear quicker and may degrade at a faster rate than that of a normal car tyres.

As a result, it depends on your priorities, winter tyres are actually more expensive too. In my opinion then it is far better to be safer and spend a little more money than If you were to go skidding off the road. Hence, we just cannot compromise when it comes to the safety of your family. Yes, these tyres are expensive but if you were to buy some at the very beginning of winter you can get some really good deals. For example, here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK. So, we have a few last years stock for sale at reduced prices?

Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta Nine-Winter tyres have special compounds

Nowadays, Winter tyres are made from special compounds. Consequently, that work best at temperatures of 7 degrees or less. Most of the UK experiences temperatures below this between November and March. In particularly cold years we can usually expect frost on almost half the days of winter. When you have winters fitted to your vehicle, your stopping distance can be shortened by up to 30 feet on icy roads. of course, your safety and vehicle’s handling will be greatly improved. So, reducing the risk of skidding, aquaplaning or sliding.

Tyre manufacturers are always striving  to make better winter tyre products. So, go with the rule that the newer the type of tyre then the better it will be when you fit your new tyres. Tyre manufacturers are always working with the car makers to come up with a better tyre product. Therefore, year after year we are seeing better tyres. Including winter tyres. This is down to the fact that the technology that designs the tyres these days are constantly advancing and evolving. Meaning that the latest tyres will always be the safest and most road worthy.

Nokian Tyres are no exception to this rule. Constantly striving to make a better tyre product. new innovations include better tyre designs for newer types of vehicles. Including SUV’s and Crossover vehicles. hence, the tyres for these vehicle are designed to maximise traction on icy and snow covered roads.I can remember the first recent bad winter coincided with the advent of the SUV’s from BMW in particular. These cars were sliding all over the place and useless in the winter weather.

Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta Nine-Best fitted in early November

People were really panicking ? Winter tyres were difficult to get hold of. Most of the allocations were taken up and tyre dealers wanted silly prices due to the panic. When you first start to use snow tyres, you should understand when the best time is to put these on your motor vehicle. So,the usual rule is to have them fitted to the car before the first predicted snow fall of the year.  I usually fit the winter car tyres in early November.

Safe driving is really important during winter, and in addition to fitting winter tyres to your car, there are other ways to improve your driving during the colder months:
Winter tyres are essential when preparing to drive in ice conditions. The winter tyre (also known as the snow tyre) can protect you in those unexpected times when you get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Indeed I can remember when I took my family to Chester zoo. It was a beautiful sunny winters day. later that afternoon we sat off back home to Yorkshire.

So, as we approached the Pennine hills on our way home, the sky became blacker and blacker.Never suspecting an imminent blizzard, I decided to take a short cut across some minor roads as we headed home. Of course, the snow began to fall? my kids were very excited at the thought of playing out in the horrible white stuff. Blizzard condition ensued. At the time we had a Toyota mini bus and the roads soon filled with snow. As a result I could feel the rear wheeled drive Toyota slipping on the packed snow.

Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta Nine-Better designed tread pattern

Fortunately , I practice what I preach and had fitted a set of general winter tyres to the minibus, just a few weeks before. I knew that all I had to do was to drive carefully and the winter tyre would do the rest. Sure enough they helped me get home when many other vehicles became stranded in the snowy conditions.

In my eyes this was the “proof of the pudding” . Giving me even more enthusiasm when talking to my customers about the benefit of fitting winter tyres.

This experience proves that In winter, the condition and performance of your tyres is extremely important. Winter tyres have a specially designed tread and composition. So, in order to provide the most effective grip, handling and safety for drivers. It’s an excellent idea, therefore, to change to specialist tyres to improve your winter driving. Increase your fuel efficiency. Ensuring the safety of you and your passengers during the winter months.

Because of the fact that Nokian tyres are constant tyre test winners with their winter tyre products. Then we at Pellon Tyres can only endorse them as probably the best ones that you can buy to keep your family safe? just in case you get caught out in the wrong place. As me and my family did returning from a sunny Chester Zoo.

When you been in the tyre trade as long as I have. Then we often get offered opportunities to help test new tyres. Hence, from the different tyre manufacturers. You may wonder what this has to do with SUV winter tyres. But a couple of years ago I was offered a chance to test drive some SUV vehicle. Thus, fitted with Vredestein SUV Winter Tyres. So to prove how different this type of car performed on winter tyres.

The cars included many different models. Including the new Range Rover the new Porsche Cayenne and the BMW MX and Mercedes ML models. We were all flown to Austria and headed for the mountains.

SUV Tyres-Fear in my eyes

All the cars were fitted with the excellent Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme tyres. Which were designed by the great car designer Giugiari. of course, the cars were driven by professional test drivers (and boy did I know it). I was in the passenger seat and another couple of guys were in the back.

We climbed upwards until we reached the snow line. The drivers then let loose, they were that confident with the snow tyres fitted that they drove these SUVs like mad men. We were driven on ice and snow through forested areas and up and down steep ravines at high speed . I had never been as frightened in my life, my eyes were popping out with fear. I was ever so glad when the tyre tests were finished, but it proved to how good these cars were with SUV Winter Tyres fitted.

Most of these cars come fitted with summer tyres when new so it is well worth investing in a set of SUV Winter Tyres to give you full driver confidence when the Apollo suv Winter Tyreswinter weather comes along, as many drivers of these vehicles found to their cost when they got stuck in snow and ice in the last few winters.

I am very proud to become the newest Winter Tyres dealer in Yorkshire. Nokian tyres are an excellent product. Especially, in the form of winters .Hence, when the mad rush for winters is on. Thus, we can normally only get them from Germany. As the winter progresses the price of these tyres goes up and up.

Nokian  Tyres have been around for a long time.Consequently, are produced in Finland and Russia. Two of the coldest and snowiest countries in the World. If they do not know how to make tyres then nobody does. For tyre companies to prove their products it is important that they enter their tyres in tests that are held independently by motor sport magazines. One of the most influential magazines in the world is the “Auto Bild” magazine , who hold regular tyre testing events on summer and winter tyres, these test are carried out with complete impartiality and the results can be completely trusted. The tyres were tested earlier this year and were tested with top ratings coming in as the top winter tyre in that size.
