Not many Michelin Pilot Alpin PA 4 customers here in Halifax UK

As many of my readers will know, I am a big fan of almost everything that Michelin tyres produce and have produced over the years. I think that this could be something to do with the fact that the Michelin Pilot Alpin was developed with the larger luxury car in mind and as I have said before, Halifax ix a small market town in Yorkshire UK and therefore does not have that many wealthy people who would buy such cars.

Tyre retailers in say Leeds and York do get a larger share of the BMW’s and Porsche’s as we do in Halifax. We do however have some of these marques in the area and we have fitted a few Michelin Pilot Alpin tyres to these cars. The drivers that bring this type of car into us for their tyres, are people that trust us with these valuable machines, we do not scratch their alloy wheels, that sort of thing.

The customers who use us also give us good feedback, I have been a tyre retailer now for 40 years and it is surprising how they like to chat to me especially about their tyres, the people with these types of luxury cars are usually very knowledgeable about their cars and so like a chat.

One particular guy owns a business that supply wall insulation and also installs it into buildings. His business does very well and he likes fast, sporty cars. His latest car is a Porsche and he came to us for a set of winter tyres for his car. He was visiting friends in Germany and he normally drives in his Range Rover in winter, but he decided to give the Porsche a run out.

Like me the guy is a very big fan of Michelin tyres, in fact he will not have anything else on his car. He insisted on a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin tyres. The guy’s name is Richard, but the tyres he wanted were not available in the UK. We have some good connections and suppliers in other European countries and so we had a ring round.

To my surprise I found out that Michelin make these tyres in two different tread pattern designs, the asymmetric and the directional. At first I thought that there some kind of mistake as I found this very unusual?. Sure enough when I rang Richard he did know about this and wanted the asymmetric pattern that was recommended for the Porsche models.

Michelin pilot Alpin in two distinct pattern types

When I checked this out with Michelin, they told me that they thought that both Tyre Tread designs had their own successes and achieved the end desired result for both types of tyres. Both designs are made from what Michelin Pilot Tyres call their Helio-compound rubber mixture, compound 3 G, which is a compound that is made from sunflower oil and silica and traditional rubber, to give the tyres more flexible sidewalls and therefore a better gripping tread surface in cold weather, bellow 7c

Indeed the new MICHELIN PILOT ALPIN has two different tread patterns. The reason is that we worked simultaneously in two parallel ways: one is made in collaboration with Porsche, the second one in a more common way. The two solutions have succeeded to achieve the desired result. Both of tread patterns respond perfectly to the “ridge-n-flex” philosophy and use the same elements but in a slightly different way.

We finally received and fitted Richards and off he went to Germany with his new Michelin Pilot Alpine tyres fitted.

Another customer that fitted these tyres said that it was the first time that he had bought a set of winter tyres, but he now feels that he can fully measure the benefits, especially in treacherous weather conditions, they were the difference between getting home, or getting stuck in snow.

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres-Really Worth Considering for the Harsh Yorkshire Winters

Michelin Alpin 5

Michelin also makes Michelin Alpin 5 Winter tyres

I was thinking that it is a good time to write this post about winter tyres when the winter is just a few months away and we did not have much snow this time last year  (at least not in Yorkshire UK). But we are Michelin Alpin 5only two months from next winter? So, (what the heck).

We find that more and more of our regular customers are now buying these tyres.  So many in fact that we decided a few years ago when we had our first cold and snowy winter, that we would start a “tyre hotel”. This is where the customer buys a set of winters and we fit the   Winter Car Tyres  and store the summer ones until the spring and then change the tyres over again. We charge for this service, but the tyres will last then three or even four winters, depending on the make and quality.

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres

This has always been a grey area to me? Which make of tyre do you recommend do you go for best which in my opinion would be the Yokohama winter tyre range, the Bridgestone Blizzac or the Michelin Alpin series including the new Michelin Alpin 5

Michelin Tyres UK is probably the Worlds most respected tyre makers and like most French companies always bring French flair into the design process. This new Michelin Alpin 5 is

no exception to the rules. France has many mountain ski resorts Snow Tyres and the Michelin winter tyres are well tested and designed to give the French tyre buying public a no choice option, the French love to buy home brand products, as any visitors to France will not fail to observe the amount of French made cars that they buy and it is the same with other products.

Going back to the Dark Age’s winter tyres were chunky things with loads of tread rubber and were very noisy. Only rich people could afford them because they had to have them fitted to go abroad (mainly France) on skiing holidays. Because of the heavy tread patterns, the tyres were very noisy and no good for travelling at speed on motorways. Tyre manufacturers began to refine these tyres as our cars became faster and more motorways were being built across the whole of Europe.

Drivers in Germany would set off skiing for a long weekend in their BMW’s and Mercedes, travel down the Autobahn (German Motorway) at 100 mph+ and then go up the mountains of Austria and France for a weekends skiing. It was clear that a different type of winter tyre had to be developed to cope with this new type of driving experience. Michelin developed the Michelin Alpin 5 and other tyre makers followed. They used different compounds (silicas were added) and included thousands of small slits in the pattern design, known as (Sipes) .

These sipes did two things scattered the snow, mud and water and made the tyre much quieter to drive on and therefore a more comfortable drive at speed on the motorways in winter.

This is where Michelin winter tyres are the leaders.

The new Alpin 5, has been even more improved to give even more driver comforts when using their cars in the winter months whatever the weather throws at them.

The studies conducted by the Traffic Accident Research Chair of Dresden University in Germany (VUFO)*, European motorists drive mainly on cold roads in winter, whether dry or wet, but do not have to deal with snow very often, although since the report we have experienced an increase in colder weather and more snowfall. The report showed that 92% of accidents occurred on dry or wet roads and the remaining 8% on icy or snow covered roads. This where the winter tyre gives the motorist protection in winter with winter tyres fitted to their cars, they are more protected even on wet roads with winter tyre fitted.

Eric Roberts

Hi, I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and Michelin Alpin 5 Winter Car Tyres and Battery business now for 40 years. I have worked for a couple for national tyre companies in my younger days, before starting my first business. I now own a garage and MOT testing centre, here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre, and I am a keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business. We are members of Point-S and Motor-Codes and are also a Unipart Car Care Centre and of course Tyre-safe.

MICHELIN WINTER TYRES – BMW M5 Calls in at Pellon Tyres for a new set

BMW M5 Comes In For a New Set of MICHELIN WINTER TYRES

As the owner of a Tyre centre here in Halifax Yorkshire UK, I am always pleased to see what I would call a special car call in for some servicing or repairs and also for some new tyres. This particular car was a BMW M5 in silver, the guy had heard about how good Michelin winter tyres were, especially Michelin Alpin Winter tyres were and so called into the depot and spoke to my son Aaron.

MICHELIN WINTER TYRES

BMW M5 with its new MICHELIN WINTER TYRES fitted

Apparently these tyres were like gold to get hold of so the guy thought that he would give us a try after he was let down by one of the larger tyre companies, who said that they could get the tyres but after a few weeks. Eventually they admitted that the tyres were unavailable and so he came to us to give us a chance to find the tyres for his M5.

The tyres he wanted were 295/30R20 and 265/35R20 Michelin Alpin winter tyres. One of the problems was the fact that this M5 was fitted with 20inch wheels and not 18 or 19 inch wheels. However we knew that the Michelin winter tyres were available in Germany and because we are a member of a tyre dealer group known as Point-S tyres, we were able to contact a German tyre company who were able to supply us with the Michelin Tyres.

The guy was very pleased with our detective work and Aaron promptly ordered the tyres. They arrived in four days and the guy brought his car in to us for the Michelin winter tyres fitting. The guy is a business man who often travels to Europe and was recommended to buy the Michelin winter tyres for his BMW, as Michelin had put many hours of research and development into the building of these tyres to compliment the BMW M5.

If you own such a car as an M5 only use the recommended winter tyres for that car

In my opinion tyres play a great importance to the car, especially when it comes to high performance cars like this BMW M5. Companies like Michelin Tyres put many hours into developing the right tyres for the right car. Michelin use their great expertise into their racing tyre division and into supplying tyres in massive racing events such as Le -Mans 24 hour’s race in France. All the expertise and development that Michelin gain in these events will be used in developing tyre products for companies like BMW and Mercedes, to be used on their premium cars.

To finalise I would totally recommend that if you are the owner of such a car, then you should stick to the tyres that are on the car from new and when buying winter tyres only use tyres that have been proven for your model, as our customer did on his BMW M5.Michelin winter tyres
