Runflat Tyres Safer-Are now a Major Car Safety Feature-by Bridgestone Tyres

Runflat Tyres Safer

Bridgestone tyres

Bridgestone tyres first started to develop the concept of the runflat tyre in Japan as part of type of aid to disabled people. The tyre that was used was a 175/70×13 that had a strengthened side wall fitted on to the Honda Civic, this was done in the “International Year Of The Disabled”.

Runflat Tyres Safer

Bridgestone tyres run flat

Later this side wall protection technology was used on the Porsche 959 and Bridgestone called the new tyre the Potenza RE71.

This new development proved a success and in the1990s Bridgestone  developed the TPMS,”Tyre Pressure Monitoring System” . This was to enable the driver to know when a tyre had lost pressure, a light on the dash would be light up when the tyre pressure dropped, warning the driver if a tyre went flat, in my opinion this made the Runflat Tyres Safer. This system was to become very popular as a safety feature and was fitted to many of the German made cars such as BMW.

This Runflat Tyres Safer allows the driver to carry on driving the car with a flat tyre. There are restrictions though, the car must be driven at 50mph for a maximum distance of 50 miles, this enables the driver to drive the car to a safe stopping place without the car swerving or deviating off course. These cars that are fitted with this Runflat Tyres Safer system do not carry a jack or spare wheel and in my opinion this lets the system down. Some car makers will tell us that this makes the car lighter and therefore more fuel efficient and greener. In my opinion I feel that in general it is a good idea and safer if the car has a rapid loss of air (blowout) on a busy motorway, the car will not deviate and keep in a straight line, making driving with Runflat Tyres Safer.

The odds of this happening though are not as high as the motorist having what I call a “normal puncture”,

this is where the grey area is and this is what Bridgestone  say…

With certain types of punctures in the tread area, the Bridgestone Run-Flat technology tyres may be repaired subject to certain conditions (Depending on how far and at what speed the car was driven after the puncture). Please consult your nearest RFT authorized dealer to have yours inspected.
Before attempting a repair, consult the vehicle owner’s manual for restrictions. The vehicle manufacturer may restrict the use of repaired tires on its vehicles”… http://www.runflat.eu/english/qa/

In my opinion we would repair a runflat tyre only if the customer says that he has had a slight loss of pressure and we can find an object such as a screw or nail within the legal area of a normal tyre puncture for example ¾ 0f the tread width from the centre of the tread outwards and the tyre had not run whilst in a totally deflated state, we would have to take the drivers word for this,so we always take caution and inspect the tyre for any signs of running under inflated, such as

Runflat Tyres Safer

How a runflat tyre works

carbon dust or creasing and cracking on the inside of the casing. If we are not sure we would always fit a new tyre.

Eric Roberts… https://www.pellonautocentre.com/runflat_tyres.htm

Can I replace run flat tyres with normal tyres ?

In my opinion the answer is NO , but the following text from  Bridgestones  website does open a slight gap…

Bridgestone EU do not recommend mixing tyres with Run-Flat Technology and standard tyres on the same vehicle, even if paired in axle sets. If you have a puncture, tyres with Run-Flat Technology are designed to permit you to proceed to a tyre dealer where you can have the tyre checked and replaced if necessary with another tyre with Run Flat Tyres Technology. In exceptional and emergency circumstances a conventional tyre of the same size can be fitted. It must be noted that standard tyres do not have Runflat Tyres Safer characteristics and should be removed at the earliest opportunity”… http://www.runflat.eu/english/qa/

In my opinion they should say that the two different types of tyres should not be mixed, but they say that you can mix them in an emergency, could the fact that the car owner just cant afford them be classed as an emergency.

Ring your insurance company is the advice that I give to all you 2nd and 3rd hand BMW Mini owners when you fall on the floor at the cost of replacing runlat tyres.

Bridgestone Blizzak- A good Winter Tyres choice to fit most car models

Post updated  9/2/2014

These are great tyres the Bridgestone Blizzak winter tyres

Bridgestone Blizzak

Bridgestone Blizzak winter for run flats

Why not consider Bridgestone blizzak winter tyres

I must admit that out of all the leading makes of tyres that are developed for winter use, then Bridgestone are not amongst them. I am not sure why this is, because Bridgestone are by sales volume, the largest tyre company in the world. However, we do not see that, in the volume of their Bridgestone Blizzak tyre sales, at least not here in Yorkshire UK.

Ever since I became a manager for one of the large tyre retailers here in the UK, I have made an effort to inform my customers about the safety features of this product. I really mean that from the bottom of my heart, it is not just to sell them something , but to me it is the safety issues. When a customer comes in to buy summers  in say November, then I will make a huge effort to try selling the customer onto winters .

I will try to convince them to fit their winters  for the whole winter period. Most drivers still do not know that when the temperature drops to below 7*C, that the tyres rubber will become harder and much less flexible, than the winter tyres, primarily because modern winter season tyres have special chemicals added to the compound, including “silica”.

Less flexible side walls make the summer ones  much stiffer and this makes your car harder to handle in cold weather steering and cornering, as well as braking can become very difficult. Winters  retain their flexibility in the cold climate and also give the driver more confidence, when they realise that the car handles much better in the snow and ice.

Bridgestone Blizzak winter tyres come into this bracket.

Bridgestone Blizzak will perform in all the bad weather that is thrown at you. They are specially engineered with deeper tread depth and a unique tread pattern to cope with the snow and ice. When Bridgestone blizzac winter, come across any snow, slush and ice, they have a  Multi-Cell compound that removes a thin layer water from the treads surface which improves the  grip using millions of microscopic pores.

This special compound also allows the tyre to stay flexible in icy and freezing temperatures, making sure that the car sticks to the road. Also there are a large number of sipes in the Bridgestone Blizzak tread which is also another property of the tyre to retain the grip in winter conditions. of our snow tyres improves traction in the wet, snow, and ice by increasing the number of biting edges.

This is the time of year, just before winter bites to think about a new set of winters for your car. One of the tyre products that comes highly recommended is the  Bridgestone Blizzak WS70. I must admit that it was not familiar with me until I have read some good revues about the winters in some of the  press and skiing blogs.

The manufacturer, claim that new technology has gone into their  compound, that includes silica and an enhanced system of microscopic tubes and cells that are covering the normal tread compound which helps the tyre to grip better, even when the tyre wears down . These so called “Nano-tubes”, help the tyre grip into the ice and snow, making this tyre very efficient in all kinds of winter driving conditions.

I am pleased to say that the Bridgestone Blizzak has become very popular in the UK this winter and we at Pellon tyres have experienced an increase in the new tyres sale

Winter will soon be here, check out I am pleased to say that the Bridgestone Blizzak has become very popular in the UK this winter and we at Pellon tyres have experienced an increase in the new tyres sale

Bridgestone Blizzac sales increase here in the UK.

I am pleased to say that the Bridgestone Blizzak has become very popular in the UK this winter and we at Pellon tyres have experienced an increase in the new tyres sales. Bridge-stone are the World leader and we at Pellon are very proud to be a  stockists in Halifax the UK.

For a further review…

“The Bridgestone Blizzak line of winter tires has a long-established and well-deserved reputation for reliability and grip in all winter conditions, and the WS70 is no exception. The successor to the highly regarded Bridgestone Blizzak WS60, the WS70 is clearly an improvement. Although opinions vary somewhat as to its exact placement, the Blizzac WS70 definitely earns a place among the top tier of tires, although the dry-road performance does leave something to be desired”… http://tires.about.com/od/Tire_Reviews/fr/Review-Bridgestone-Blizzak-Ws-70.htm

New Bridgestone A001-Weather Control tyres for a safer all year round driving experience.

This tyre the New Bridgestone A001 developed for certain European countries

Bridgestone tyres are the largest tyre company in the World and are always developing new tyre products to suit different weather conditions on our roads. The new tyre the A001 is no exception. This new Bridgestone tyres has been developed for countries that have very wet winter (and summer) climates with the addition of very cold and snowy spells. This of coarse includes us here in the UK and also other countries including France ,Ireland,Belgium and perhaps Denmark. In my opinion the new New Bridgestone A001 tyre is really in the class of an all weather tyre and possibly should be left on the car the all year round especially in a very wet summer that we seam to be experiencing in recent years.

New Bridgestone A001

New Bridgestone A001 tyre

The new tyre achieves this ability to get rid of high water volumes by including a large amount of sipes on the tyres edges, this has also found to be an advantage when facing ice and snowy conditions during the hardest winter months. Bridgestone tyre have also added their expertise in tyre compounds, probably emanated from their days in F1 racing and added “silica” to the tyres compound, this gives the new ones the ability to stay more flexible when the temperature drops bellow the dreaded 7 degree, this is the temperature where summers  start to loose their grip by becoming harder and not allowing the tread to grip.

The new Bridgestone A001 is available in most popular sizes

And is marked as an M+S to cope with all winter conditions and as I say earlier will be best kept on the car as an all-weather tyre not having to change from summer to winter tyres.

The first Bridgestone First to be made was the 195/65R15 H rated tyre. The new rating is for grip on wet roads.Hence, for the road noise or lack of it. This is measured in decibels. Thus, to show how quite the tyre is on all types of road surface. The new tyres are also very light in weight. So, will compliment the new EV cars that are now on the market. Bridgestone First tyres have made the new tyre lighter. Thus, to help reduce the weight of these new EV cars. Naturally for greener performance and lower emissions. This is in line with all the major tyre companies.Hence, to make tyre more lighter and also give them much better rolling resistance. Therefore reduce emissions.

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres-Excellent for Puncture free Plant Hire vehicles.

Tokyo Motorshow unveils the new Bridgestone Air Free Tyres

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres-A brand new concept. Has appeared at the Toyota Motor  Show, Thus, a brand new tyre that does not need any air the Airless Tyre . The new tyre is made of totally different materials.Especially, to the  conventional tyres made of rubber compounds.

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres

Bridgestone Air Free Tyres-new Bridgestone concept tyre and wheel in one

For this reason, they are  made up of Thermo- plastic resins.Hence, this material is very flexible with great durability and is 100% recyclable.

The tyre (if we should call it that) will be free of punctures.Naturally, the run flat concept could be a thing of the past .

Although at this stage I am not sure. Therefore, to the extent that this product has been tested. My own theory. Is that it will be used for tripping around towns on little “green” energy saving cars. Michelin has also developed a similar concept tyres. Thus, called the Tweel as shown in the image.

Bridgestone tyres claim that the new resin that makes the tyres can be melted down and made into new tyres, therefore making the new product much less wasteful than the standard rubber tyres . Another great advantage is that the vehicle that has the tyres fitted will not have to carry a spare, the design means that the tyre can not be punctured,

another great feature by Bridgestone tyres.

Bridgestone tyres are a great innovative tyre company and I admire their attempts to make a better World.  Eric Roberts.

I think that this new design fits well into the need for change that allows this product to fit into a greener and environmental friendly World, but I don’t think it will be the end all of all our problems produced by the rubber tyre, but it is a good start, it will also put people out of work in the service industry, but we will have a cleaner Planet. Locking Wheel-Nut Problem-BMW garage quotes extortionate price to remove locking wheel-nuts?

Locking Wheel-Nut Problem

Locking Wheel-Nut Problem; It is easy see that the big main dealer garages, have much larger overheads than a small garage like my own, here at Pellon Auto-centre, in Halifax UK. Probably all of us small garage owners have heard horror stories from our customers about the charges that main dealer garages charge their customers.

We have heard of a couple recently? One was a lady customer who was charged £700 for a standard service on her Audi. The garage was, of course, an Audi garage, and she was threatened with the old story of, “if you have your car serviced elsewhere, it would cancel the cars warranty”

Locking Wheel-Nut Problem

315-35R20 Bridgestone Runflat BMW X5 tyre

We all know that this is not true. Going back to the lady customer, I asked if I could see the garages invoice because we all know that there could have been add-ons, such as other parts. This does sometimes put up the price of a service. But no the bill was for a service and service alone. I did notice that washing the car was extra, and a few other extras totted the bill up-to-the £700 that she paid.

The lady has been one of our customers ever since and all the rest of the family now bring their car problems into us. The most recent price shock came from the BMW garage. A tyre customer of ours asked the BMW garage to change his winter tyres back to his summer tyres. His car was in for some warranty work. He thought that he would ask them “just to change the tyres whilst they had the wheels off “, The BMW garage agreed but later in the morning phoned our customer with a locking wheel nut problem? The locking wheel nut tool was missing and they could not remove the locking wheel nuts.

The shock came when they explained that the job was going to be difficult and it would cost them a whopping £500 to remove the lockers and supply a new set? WOW

The terrified customer rang Deb our depot manager? Deb told her to get the car and we worked out that the job was going to be £54. The BMW came in and Ryan removed the lockers in 10 minutes, with no problem, like many other small garages we have invested in a special tool that helps us to remove the wheel nuts on 90% of vehicles.

Ryan also noticed that one of the summer tyres to be re-fitted had a nail in the shoulder area of the tyre. The Bridgestone tyres were special run-flat tyres that

Locking Wheel-Nut Problem

BMW X5 with locking wheel nut issues

were specific to this particular BMW X5 model. This BMW comes with the  i-Drive System. On this vehicle, the tyres must be of the same tread depth, on the same axle or this interferes with the cars drive system and handling.

The Bridgestone run-flat tyres are marked with a star on the sidewall. This star denotes that these are the correct tyres for this specific BMW car.

The customer paid a total of £640 for the Locking Wheel-Nut Problem solving and two new tyres fitting. There must be a moral in this story somewhere?

Narrow Tyres – How does the BMW i3 handle so well on such narrow tyres? – CNET

Narrow Tyres

We take a closer look at Bridgestone’s Ecopia EP500 tires for the 2015 BMW i3 electric car.

This article asks how the new BMW i3 car can handle well with such Narrow Tyres Bridgestone tyres?

Well it is not too many ago that all tyres were thin and narrow and do you know? they worked perfectly well.

The difference is that today’s tyres are made from different materials and compounds. Ecopia tyres  help you cut down on fuel consumption and carbon emissions and are used on fuel efficient electric cars such as the BMW i3 car.

Tyre sizes are unfamiliar out of the tyre trade, such as 15570R19,17660R19 and also as large as 15560R20 and 17555R20, in days gone by we were using sizes such as 18580R15 and 20580R16, so the trend has become taller Narrow Tyres , but Bridgestone say that these tyres are good handling and give good grip in wet weather.

So that is good enough for me/

http://www.pellontyres.co.uk/Tyre/Details/Bridgestone/Ecopia+EP500

Bridgestone narrow tyres

The development of tyres started with the vintage/classic cars of today. We have all seen how narrow tyres were on these cars. These cars could not go very fast though? And the tyres were perfect for the time period and the types of suspension that these cars had.

The vintage cars of today could only be afforded by the rich in the pre WW2 period, but after the war cars became more affordable to the drivers who were perhaps managers or the owners of small businesses. I can remember when I first started working in a garage that most of our customers did indeed own a business and the working class people would still catch the bus to work.

The cars that were out then were fitted with X ply tyres, but thanks to Michelin the radial tyre came out and soon took over from the lesser X ply tyres. The bigger cars came out on 18580R15 tyres and cars like the new Minis were fitted with 145R10 tyres.

In fact the Mini period signaled a new kind of car buyer the working class man. The car market was booming. Tyre sizes were changing all the time with the commonest radial tyre being the 145R13, 155R13, and the bigger cars were fitted with 155R15, 165R15 and 185R15.

Over the years they  became wider (fatter), this was due to many factors including faster cars on faster roads.

Why narrow tyres again

Consequently, car manufacturers knew that tyres had to be made differently. Therefore, to satisfy the requirements’ of the governments drive to produce greener cars. The EV battery driven became a favourite. For this reason, it followed closely by the Hydrogen cell cars.

Some tyre companies use different tyre materials to reduce the amount of petrol based oils used in the manufacturing  compounds. Yokohama tyres of Japan use orange peel oil and Continental have discovered that the white liquid that we see in dandelions has the same molecular structure as rubber latex, the stuff that they have been made of for years.

They are also becoming thinner again. This is to give the tyres less rolling resistance and also a larger turning distance. This means that the engine has to do less work to power the car forward, thus using less fuel and making the car greener. We are now up to date with Bridgestone Car Tyres leading the way.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

Bridgestone Tyres Reveal BMW i3 Electric car Tyres In New Tyre Sizes

bridgestone tyres

BMW Group announced partnership with Bridgestone tyres, in which one of the world’s largest tire manufacturer has been selected to develop a range of tyres for the BMW i3 electric car.

eric roberts‘s insight:

New bridgestone Tyres Sizes for BMW i3 Electric Car

Japanese and Worldwide tyre company Bridgestone tyres have teamed up with BMW, the German car maker, to create a new type of tyre which will give an excellent rolling resistance and aerodynamic performance for use on the new i3 electric cars that BMW are producing. The tyres from Bridgestone Tyres will be as the Ecopia EP500 Ologic tyre, and will be available in 4 completely new tyre sizes.

This is a completely different concept to the tyres that have been developed over the past say ten years, which were fatter (more width) and smaller in 15 inch sizes and then 16 and 17 inch sizes, up to what we have today In 18/19 and 20 inch sizes, all of coarse with corresponding  aspect ratios. The aspect ratio is the height of the tyres as a percentage of the width, if the tyre has an aspect ratio of 60, then the tyres height is 60% of the width, the smaller the aspect ratio the wider the tyre will be in relation to the height of the tyre.

The new sizes will be mind blowing to us in the tyre sector, because they go against all that we have previously seen as far as tyre technology has gone. Bridgestone Car Tyres are even claiming the new tyres are even good in the winter weather and in fact will be making some of them in the Blizzak type winter pattern.

This will be a modern version of going back in time, when older guys like myself used to fit tyres with sizes such 155×16,185×15,175×16 and many more with a narrow tread and

tall sidewall, the new Bridgestone EU tyre sizes will be 155/70×19, 175/60×19, 155/60×20 and 175/55×20. The tyre’s long contact patch (relative to its narrow width), revolutionary tread design and compound still ensure outstanding grip in both wet and dry conditions.

In my opinion this is just another excellent tyre innovation from Bridgestone Tyres and will help to keep all the tyre industry players on their toes and also creates much interest in the new revolution that we are having in the auto trade.
