Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres

Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres- Your Cars Safety Starts with Winter Tires

Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres

Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres

Of course, “Car Safety” is one of my lifelong objectives. As a result, I have always had a good living from selling tyres. Another thing that has happened during my stint as the owner of a tyre business. Hence the development and increased braking capabilities of the modern cars. This is the thing that has driven the tyre manufacturers to making their tyre products safer.

The largest progression in my opinion. Thus, has been the development of winter tyres. Winter tyres have become more important for safety reasons. As expected, these tyre developments also include improvements on tyres that fit the larger sport saloons and SUV vehicles. Previously, many tyre manufacturers only made a handful of winter tyre sizes . The mighty Michelin were no doubt world leaders using motorsport as a tool to make many new tyre developments. Including, new tread patterns and tyre compounds.

Michelin were followed by many of the other leading tyre companies. Now winter tyres have become a science in their own right.  All- season tyres are also a much improved product. This video shows the safety aspects that you can expect from todays modern winter and all-season tyres.

BMW 320i Winter Tyres

BMW 320i Winter Tyres

There is no doubt, that BMW owners, would benefit greatly by fitting winter tyres at the right time of the year. Hence, we find that it is the third owner of the BMW’s that ignore the thought of fitting winter tyres. This type of vehicle is usually still in great condition. Thus, even when they reach old age. This car is a very powerful machine. This makes it a double requirement to fit winter tyres.

The BMW range is well equipped with wide summer tyres These cars are very capable of reaching high speeds. This also makes them more vulnerable in snow and icy weather. A double whammy is the cars excellent braking system. Any driver of these large and powerful cars will know that the braking systems are very keen and accurate.

In my opinion, winter tyres are a must and important safety factor. The same goes for cars of a similar size and power. The car in this video the BMW 320i xDrive M Sport was tested at Douglas Park – Therefore, watch as we drive completely up a 170 metre ski slope. As a result, which has a gradient of 10-15 degrees in 300mm – 400mm of snow. The car was tested on snow which has 200mm under lying layer of ice which has a temp of -12 degrees.

Car Servicing/Cold Weather can bring drivers higher motoring costs

Car Servicing/Cold Weather

Car Servicing/Cold Weather

Car Servicing/Cold Weather

Of course, sometimes I think that we can be lucky. Especially with the winter weather that we experience here in the UK. As we all know, most winters are a mixture of mild weather with cold spells in-between. We certainly don’t get the extreme conditions seen in the USA. Including the  ten foot of snow followed by temperature of 18 C. Causing the snow to melt and then flooding.

So, I know that the winter months are very good for business for garages. Especially as the winter approaches, and the freezing conditions cause many problems to the Halifax UK motorists.

Car Servicing/Cold Weather

New water pump to replace the frozen old one.

This original post was written by me during the winter of 2014-2015.

Subsequently,it was the usual mixture of cold and mild weather. Both of which could affect your car. Mostly, if it has not been properly maintained. Sooner or later, many motorists have now taken heed from the motor trades continuous publicity. Firstly, about the advantages of winter tyres and it has now reaped reward. Consequently, with millions of motorists now fitting award winning Nokian Winter Tyres to their cars. Of course, giving a much safer winter experience for them and other road users.

Pre Winter car servicing can beat off problems

As I have mentioned above, winter tyres are an important part of your car and safety, but other things are also important to have checked. I will start off with your window washer bottle. Make sure that you use a high concentrate wiper fluid when filling the washer bottle, try not to be tempted to buy the really cheap stuff, there is nothing worse than your windscreen freezing because the washer water is made of a weak concentrate.

Car Servicing/Cold Weather

Check your wiper blades, clean windows are a must in winter.

Check out your antifreeze levels and top them up with the right coloured coolant and antifreeze. Check with the instructions on the bottle. Of course, to get the correct mix. Also make a note of when your antifreeze was last changed. In a word, every couple of years should be the right time to have it changed. Wiper blades are also worth checking, but these will be changed if your car has a pre-winter servicing check out.

Oil too can be affected by temperature change  engine servicing could solve this problem

In my opinion though the UK climate is very changeable. But does not get enough extremes to warrant changing your engine oil in a hot or cold climate. If you are not too sure then your cars manual will give you the relevant information. Including, the different viscosity that you may require. So, if you are heading for a very cold country or a hot country.

Brake and clutch fluid can also be affected by extreme cold weather. If you carry out  regular car servicing. Then you will not need to worry about the fluid and just have it topped up at your local garage.

Car Servicing

Replace fluid in washer bottle with strong anti frost liquid

Also as I have said in other blogs. So,  it is important that you carry an emergency kit in the car boot, including jump cables and a portable shovel.

Your light are also very important, how many cars do we see driving about on one headlight, I think that they look like motorcycles when I see them coming towards me and it can be very off putting, so always check your lights at regular intervals all year round but because of the short daylight hours, check them more regularly.

As a garage owner I know only too well that the winter weather can bring all sorts of misery to your vehicles

Fortunately, for us garage owners then winter is perhaps our busiest times of year. So why not winter service your car and eliminate many of the problems that the cold weather will bring you. Only last week one of our customers who is a courier driver, using his own transit van, noticed that his van had started to cut out when driving along.

This was after a very cold frosty night and his van also started to overheat. He rang us up and we suggested that he should come in straight away to prevent any damage to his engine.

Car Servicing

car servicing could have prevented a broken water pump

When he arrived the first thing that we did was to check his radiator water for antifreeze.

Sure enough the radiator was full but the colour of the liquid was very pale. So, indicating a lack of antifreeze. In fact this was the problem. Because, of the lack of antifreeze the water pump had frozen. Including, the splines connecting it to the power steering pump shearing off.

This would have been prevented if the mixture in the radiator had been checked and made up to the correct level of antifreeze. The water pump was changed, albeit in a very tight and awkward place in the engine and the guy went about his business delivering parcels.

This is just an example of what can go wrong in differing winter weather, so a little checking or servicing could in the long run save you pounds by the end of the winter.

Nokian Winter Tyres Winners-Winter Not yet Over? A set of 4 for this Land Rover Freelander GS TD 4

Nokian Winter Tyres Winners

This winter is becoming one of the best years for our customers buying their first set of winter tyres.(Nokian Winter Tyres Winners)

It is probably due to the fact that we have had a run of cold snowy winters. Over the past three or four years and the need for winter tyres are slowly sinking in. We also have a large Polish community in the Halifax area. Of course this is where where my tyre-centre is situated.Polish people are familiar with the need for winter tyres. In fact I think it may now be compulsory in Poland to fit winter tyres from November to march. Hence, the same as some other European countries.

Which winter tyres ?

We have found over the years that as an independent tyre retailer, most customers think in two ways. Either they know exactly what they want, or they will take our recommendations. Of course, as to which brand and at what price to pay for their tyres.

Nokian Winter Tyres

Scenes like this will be common in the UK the first week of March 2018

The majority of our customers come to us on word of mouth recommendations. Because they have received good advice and service in the past. Subsequently, we know this because we do not advertise as such. Perhaps, only through social media sites and internet directories.

In the past when our profit margins were higher we would regularly take out full page ads in the local papers, costing us an arm and a leg, we never really knew if the ads paid off or not.Yokohama Winter Tyres

We have and still do sell many different brands of tyres including winter tyres. In the past two years we have been able to buy our tyres from the major tyre companies because we are a member of a buying group known as Point-S tyres.

Nokian Winter Tyres Winners

We were very happy to open an account with Nokian Winter Tyres . Because we knew from experience that this company made excellent tyres, including winter tyres. This will be our third year selling Nokian Winter Tyres Winners and we are pleased with the very good response we had from the drivers who have experienced these tyres in winter conditions. The Halifax area is very hilly, we are in the foothills of the Pennine mountain range and therefore we have very tricky roads. Especially in winter snowy conditions.

The latest car to arrive for a set of four Nokian Winter Tyres was a Land Rover-Freelander 2-GS-TD4. This nice looking car had a set of four 235/65R17 108H  Winter tyres. It’s great when you love the job that you are doing and can write about it in our company blog.

Winter Tyre Preparations

Difference between winter tyres-summer tyres

Of course, winter tyres are made of different compounds and operate at much lower temperature. So, to rectify this, most tyre makers now include silica in their compounds. Thus enabling the winter tyres to operate at much lower temperatures. So retaining their suppleness in adverse conditions.

Consequently, even the Best Summer Tyres become hard like plastic, making the tyres loose their elasticity and therefore grip. Therefore, some tyre makers such as Toyo of Japan have tried adding grit to their compounds. Helping to create safer Snow Tyres.

Winter tyres have also different tread patterns these are usually more of a block pattern. Including, larger centre groves to dissipate the water and slush. On the positive side, the blocks give you more surface. Of course, they do not clog up with snow, due to the spaces between the blocks.

Most importantly, winter tyres also have many tiny slits known as sipes. Sipes also help to dissipate the slush and water that can clog up your tyres.Difference between winter tyres-summer tyres

Winter tyres have now become much more sophisticated .

Companies like Vredestein and Nokian produce some of the Best Cheap Winter Car Tyres a Dutch tyre company now owned by Apollo tyres from India, have made winter tyres to a very high standard . This was necessary to comply with other European countries that witnessed snow every winter and the need for say a German motorist to be able to drive his BMW at great speed down the Autobahn to go skiing in Austria or Switzerland on the same tyre.

Difference between winter tyres-summer tyres Winter Tyres  technology advanced in leaps and bounds.

Silica was added to able the rubber compounds to become much more flexible at lower temperatures. This advance is now used by most of the leading tyre companies.  This combined with computer enhanced tread design has enabled manufacturers to produce a winter tyre. The tyres are now silent on motorways yet very effective in heavy rain, snow and ice. Snow tyres, in my opinion are one of the greatest advances for the motorist of our time. They are a great contribution to road safety. All vehicle owners should consider buying them. This is especially when buying them at the right time. This is  before the price doubles again or indeed before supplies run out. Winter tyres are available online at www.pellonautocentre.com at internet prices.

This car was originally owned by a family of mill owners.Hence, from the Halifax area of West Yorkshire. The car was bought for the Lady of the house. For this reason, was restored by a West Yorkshire restoration company.Run by the owner and his son John Horsfield http://www.horsfieldsofhalifax.co.uk/projects.htm. The company carry out fantastic restoration jobs. Hence, as well as running a wedding car business.

This short article. Shows the diversity of cars that are booked in for servicing and MOT testing. Accordingly, at  Pellon Autocentre. We would like to thank the owners of these cars.Of course, for trusting them with such valuable cars into their care.

The “LANCHESTER” was designed by Mr George Lanchester. Who created an upmarket version of the” BSA ten” from around 1933. They also developed a model of car known as theRoadrider”. Before the beginning of the second World War. Lanchester was later bought out by “BSA”. Hence, the owners of Daimler and the Lanchesters were made to take second place to the new Daimler models. Sadly in 1956. Because the last model of the Lanchester known as the sprite was phased out.

The original holding company were facing financial difficulties. The bank called in the companies overdraft. Thus, calling for an immediate seizure of the companies assets. Lanchester cars were then produced at the BSA factory in Sparkbrook a (suburb of Birmingham), and because of this deal was struck to sell the Lanchester business to “BSA”. A deal was made in 1931 and Lanchester cars were bought out by BSA for £26,000 a significant amount of money in those days.

Lexus Tyre Winter Tyres

It is now approaching autumn and then winter. I look forward to winter time. As expected, the weather will deteriorate. For this reason, we can all expect the possibility of ice and in some area, the dreaded snow. During the winter months, it’s not just ice and snow that make our roads slippery and difficult to drive on, even cold and damp conditions can make driving a dangerous task.

Winter tyres have been designed and developed to provide a much better grip and safety in all of the inclement weather conditions. This is the main reason why tyre retailers, like ourselves,(Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, UK). Thus, recommend that our customers fit winter tyres. Of course, many of our clients fit winter tyres every November without fail.

I am not the only one that tries to educate the virtues of winters.Because this is an industry wide attempt to make our roads much safer.Especially, in the more extreme winter weather that will be hitting us shortly. Lexus have also joined in. Thus by creating this video. Many drivers are visual, and this also applies to me. I can pick up things much more quickly when I see it on TV or a Video. Hence, I have started to post my blogs, including a video.

I am entirely convinced about the attributes of winter tyres. So are my customers. Therefore, we have had many testimonials from our existing clients. Over the past five years, we have built our winter tyre business, without any expensive advertising. All our sales have come from the word of mouth.Of course from satisfied customers.

In fact, we even have customers who can’t wait for the first snow- fall of the winter. They never get used to the traction, stability and grip. Hence, that their winter tyres give them in the snowy weather.

Winter Tyres 7 Good Reasons to-fit Them Make it a safer winter for your family

Winter Tyres 7 Good Reasons

Winter Tyres 7 Good Reasons; At Pellon Tyres we take the benefits of winter tyre fitments very seriously, and with winter fast approaching it may be time to consider your tyre needs. Here are seven reasons you might want to consider swapping to winters Winters vs. Summers

Winter Tyres 7 Good Reasons

General winter tyres

1) Winter tyres are NOT SNOW TYRES
One of the most common reasons we hear as to why Winter Tyres 7 Good Reasons aren’t needed in the UK is because we don’t get enough snow. Winter tyres are designed to be more efficient than regular tyres in any temperature under 7c (44f) on any road. Cold weather tyres are designed with a larger percentage of natural rubber and silica in the compound which doesn’t harden up as much as

synthetic rubber in cold conditions.

2) Winter tyres work
The General Altimax Winter Plus and the General Eurovan winter tyre against the General Altimax Sports ultra-high-performance summer tyre in icy conditions. From just 10mph the winter tyre stopped in 6.4 metres, while the summer tyre needed more than twice the distance to stop at over 14 yards. Imagine the difference from 30 mph.

3) Winter tyres could save you money
Modern cars have big alloys and expensive wide low profile tyres. Once the small outlay of a set of steel rims has been made, winter tyres are often cheaper because of their smaller size. While you’re driving on winter tyres, you are not wearing out your expensive summer tyres, thus saving you money.

4) ABS don’t stop your car any quicker
Another false-truth we hear a lot is winter tyres aren’t needed thanks to ABS. ABS were designed to allow steering control to be retained while in an emergency situation and will not stop you any quicker in low grip situations.

Winter Tyres 7 Good Reasons

Winter tyres are as comfortable as summer tyres

5)Another myth is a loss of ride comfort, or extra noise thanks to winter tyres. The truth is modern Winter Tyres 7 Good Reasons are as every bit as comfortable as summer tyres, sometimes more so thanks to an increased profile.

6) Avoiding other people on the road
The number of accidents caused by wet conditions increases in winter by 267%. Give yourself a chance of avoiding someone else’s incident by fitting winter tyres.

7) Cars have changed
It’s no secret modern cars have gained a little weight, in fact.Hence, a MK5 Golf is almost twice the weight of an MK1 Golf. Consequently, with all that extra weight comes added inertia when trying to change directions or slow down, which gives the tyres much more work to do. To compound the problem? Many more cars are coming with overly broad sports tyres which have even less chance of slowing the big heavy car. www.pellontyres.co.ukcurrently has hundreds of winter tyres in stock at our depot ready to be fitted to our customer’s cars. If you wish to discuss your winter tyre needs or to reserve stock, please do not hesitate to call our customer service line on 0800 731 0965.

Winter Tyres-Could fitting them Affect Your Car Insurance?

I always find it strange to hear my customers say “will my car be insured if I fit winter tyres”. I used to think that they were joking at first, but for some reason, they were very serious, apparently it was something that they had read in a national newspaper. When I checked this out, it said that if you modify or change your car from the original specs, then you should

winter tyres, insurance

Kumho winter tyres are very popular.

inform your insurance company, or you could not be insured in case that you had an accident. I suspect that this covers thousands of motorists driving about today, “with what they would consider minor adjustments” to their cars, such as fitting winter tyres, or a “go faster stripe “down the side.

There is no doubt that winter tyres do affect your cars performance, but only for the better by making the car drive with better control and brake better in winter weather from rain to ice and snow. As long as you sick to the same size and the advised load rating for your car, you should be fine and proud to fit the winter tyres.

Insurance companies should give you “discount” for fitting winter tyres

Even this year our customers have asked about the affect winter tyres can have on their insurance, so I thought that I would look into a little deeper and write an article about the subject. In my opinion I think that you should get a rebate from your insurance company if you make your car safer by fitting winters to it. In fact the big debate to me is “are cars with illegal part worn tyres insured” and the answer is NO, but I will look at that in a future article.

The problem has also become an issue with the insurers themselves after a deluge of inquiries from worried car owners, thinking that they would not be insured if they fitted these tyres to their car. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) the problem has been taken up with its members and now over 90% have agreed that they will not increase premiums for their customers that fit the correct winter tyres to their vehicles.

They also agreed that fitting winters to their car made for better road safety over the winter period, in fact many of the other European countries make it a law to fit winters between November and March of the following year, so why should the British motorists be penalized.

A statement from the ABI says; “often motor insurers will not charge an additional premium when their insured customers use winter tyres, provided that they meet, and are fitted in accordance with, the vehicle manufacturers’ specifications and are in a roadworthy condition”

If you are unsure about your own insurance company as regarding their stance on the matter, then you can either ring them up or go to the ABI website where insurers are listed, who comply with “good to fit winter tyres “ruling. The web address is… https://www.abi.org.uk/~/media/Files/Documents/Publications/Public/Migrated/Motor/ABI%20guide%20to%20winter%20tyres%20The%20motor%20insurance%20commitment.pdf

Winter tyres will not incur extra insurance costs

winter tyres

Scenes like this will soon be upon us,so prepare your car for the worse to come.

Have I have stated earlier in this article the insurance companies often increased the costs of your insurance if you modified your car in any way and did not inform them, things like an upgraded modified engine spring to mind. They regarded you as been more likely to have an accident, if you had modified your car and also your car may have become a bigger target to car thieves, so an extra premium would have been charged.

At first when winter tyres became more popular the insurance companies gave out mixed messages, but the ABI can now confirm that winter tyres are a safety issue and are a great improvement when fitted to your car through the winter period.

My own advice would be to inform your insurance company that you are fitting winter tyres. You will, not have to pay any extra premiums. Some companies do require you to inform than a list can be found on the ABI web-site. Nick Starling, ABI’s director of general insurance, said: “Insurers do not want to penalize motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads. Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists.”

Always fit the same size or a size recommended by your tyre dealer if a direct replacement cannot be found. Good tyre retailers will have a web site for converting the sizes over legally and should be accepted by the insurance companies. Some insurance companies such as Tesco and The Co-operative insurance company state that you are alright to fit winters but you should not oversize them. Over sizing any tyres is not a good thing anyway?
