Car Servicing and Cold Weather can bring drivers higher motoring costs

Sometimes I think that we are lucky with the winter weather here in the UK. Most winters are a mixture of mild weather with cold spells in-between. We certainly don’t get the extreme conditions seen in the USA, with ten foot of snow followed by temperature of 18C, causing the snow to melt and then flooding.

As a keen blogger I know that the winter months are very good for business in the States as the winter approaches and the freezing conditions cause many problems to the American motorists.

Anyhow back to the UK. This winter 2014-2015 has been the usual mixture of cold and mild weather that could affect your car if it has not been properly maintained. I am pleased to say that many motorists have now taken heed of our continuous publicity about the advantages of winter tyres and it has now reaped reward with millions of motorists now fitting Cheap Winter Tyres to their cars and a much safer winter experience for them and other road users.

Pre Winter car servicing can beat off problems

As I have mentioned above, winter tyres are an important part of your car and safety, but other things are also important to have checked. I will start off with your window washer bottle. Make sure that you use a high concentrate wiper fluid when filling the washer bottle, try not to be tempted to buy the really cheap stuff, there is nothing worse than your windscreen freezing because the washer water is made of a weak concentrate.

Check out your antifreeze levels and top them up with the right coloured coolant and antifreeze, check with the instructions on the bottle, to get the right mix. Also make a note of when your antifreeze was last changed; every couple of years should be the right time to have it changed. Wiper blades are also worth checking, but these will be

changed if your car has a pre-winter servicing check out.

Oil too can be affected by temperature change  engine servicing could solve this problem

In my opinion though the UK climate is very changeable, but does not get enough extremes to warrant changing your engine oil in a hot or cold climate. If you are not too sure then your cars manual will give you the relevant information on the different viscosity that you may require if you are heading for a very cold country or a hot country.

Brake and clutch fluid can also be affected by extreme cold weather. If your carry out  regular car servicing then you will not need to worry about the fluid and just have it topped up at your

local garage. Also as I have said in other blogs, it is important that you carry an emergency kit in the car boot, including jump cables and a portable shovel.

Your light are also very important, how many cars do we see driving about on one headlight, I think that they look like motorcycles when I see them coming towards me and it can be very off putting, so always check your lights at regular intervals all year round but because of the short daylight hours, check them more regularly.

As a garage owner I know only too well that the winter weather can bring all sorts of misery to your vehicles and winter is perhaps our busiest times of year, so service your car and eliminate many of the problems that the cold weather will bring you. Only last week one of our customers who is a courier driver, using his own transit van, noticed that his van had started to cut out when driving along.

This was after a very cold frosty night and his van also started to overheat. He rang us up and we suggested that he should come in straight away to prevent any damage to his engine.

Car Servicing

car servicing could have prevented a broken water pump

When he arrived the first thing that we did was to check his radiator water for antifreeze. Sure enough the radiator was full but the colour of the liquid was very pale, indicating a lack of antifreeze. In fact this was the problem. Because of the lack of antifreeze the water pump had frozen and the splines connecting it to the power steering pump had sheared off.

This would have been prevented if the mixture in the radiator had been checked and made up to the correct level of antifreeze. The water pump was changed, albeit in a very tight and awkward place in the engine and the guy went about his business delivering parcels.

This is just an example of what can go wrong in differing winter weather, so a little checking or servicing could in the long run save you pounds by the end of the winter.

Winter Tyres-Could fitting them Affect Your Car Insurance?

I always find it strange to hear my customers say “will my car be insured if I fit winter tyres”. I used to think that they were joking at first, but for some reason, they were very serious, apparently it was something that they had read in a national newspaper. When I checked this out, it said that if you modify or change your car from the original specs, then you should

Kumho winter tyres are very popular.

inform your insurance company, or you could not be insured in case that you had an accident. I suspect that this covers thousands of motorists driving about today, “with what they would consider minor adjustments” to their cars, such as fitting winter tyres, or a “go faster stripe “down the side.

There is no doubt that winter tyres do affect your cars performance, but only for the better by making the car drive with better control and brake better in winter weather from rain to ice and snow. As long as you sick to the same size and the advised load rating for your car, you should be fine and proud to fit the winter tyres.

Insurance companies should give you “discount” for fitting winter tyres

Even this year our customers have asked about the affect winter tyres can have on their insurance, so I thought that I would look into a little deeper and write an article about the subject. In my opinion I think that you should get a rebate from your insurance company if you make your car safer by fitting winters to it. In fact the big debate to me is “are cars with illegal part worn tyres insured” and the answer is NO, but I will look at that in a future article.

The problem has also become an issue with the insurers themselves after a deluge of inquiries from worried car owners, thinking that they would not be insured if they fitted these tyres to their car. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) the problem has been taken up with its members and now over 90% have agreed that they will not increase premiums for their customers that fit the correct winter tyres to their vehicles.

They also agreed that fitting winters to their car made for better road safety over the winter period, in fact many of the other European countries make it a law to fit winters between November and March of the following year, so why should the British motorists be penalized.

A statement from the ABI says; “often motor insurers will not charge an additional premium when their insured customers use winter tyres, provided that they meet, and are fitted in accordance with, the vehicle manufacturers’ specifications and are in a roadworthy condition”

If you are unsure about your own insurance company as regarding their stance on the matter, then you can either ring them up or go to the ABI website where insurers are listed, who comply with “good to fit winter tyres “ruling. The web address is… https://www.abi.org.uk/~/media/Files/Documents/Publications/Public/Migrated/Motor/ABI%20guide%20to%20winter%20tyres%20The%20motor%20insurance%20commitment.pdf

Winter tyres will not incur extra insurance costs

winter tyres

Scenes like this will soon be upon us,so prepare your car for the worse to come.

Have I have stated earlier in this article the insurance companies often increased the costs of your insurance if you modified your car in any way and did not inform them, things like an upgraded modified engine spring to mind. They regarded you as been more likely to have an accident, if you had modified your car and also your car may have become a bigger target to car thieves, so an extra premium would have been charged.

At first when winter tyres became more popular the insurance companies gave out mixed messages, but the ABI can now confirm that winter tyres are a safety issue and are a great improvement when fitted to your car through the winter period.

My own advice would be to inform your insurance company that you are fitting winter tyres. You will, not have to pay any extra premiums. Some companies do require you to inform than a list can be found on the ABI web-site. Nick Starling, ABI’s director of general insurance, said: “Insurers do not want to penalize motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads. Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists.”

Always fit the same size or a size recommended by your tyre dealer if a direct replacement cannot be found. Good tyre retailers will have a web site for converting the sizes over legally and should be accepted by the insurance companies. Some insurance companies such as Tesco and The Co-operative insurance company state that you are alright to fit winters but you should not oversize them. Over sizing any tyres is not a good thing anyway?

One of my customers is a Volvo owner. Hence, one of my business objects is to talk as much as I can to my customers. I was recommending to him about the benefits fitting winter tyres to his Volvo. he referred to the fact that he had purchased a set of Nokian winter tyres. In addition he explained how he bought the tyres to combat a snow storm in January. However, by the time that he had fitted the winter tyres a bit too late to try them out as the snow had cleared quickly.

He went onto tell me the following- As a result, the bad January snow had all gone . Hence, by the time I got my Nokians fitted to steel wheels. However, there was a light dusting of snow a few weeks later.

Of course, that allowed me to experiment briefly on our very steep driveway. Consequently, our Polo, which had behaved much better than the S60 in the heavy snow. Naturally, would get stuck almost immediately it hit the slope.
As a result, I bought winter tyres for the first time last January. Soon after discovering that the S60 was worse than useless in the snow. Fitted out with regular Michelin summer tyres on 17 inch wheels.

Moreover, as soon as it hit the slightest slope it just spun the drive wheels and refused to move. Regardless of driving style and regardless of traction-control settings.

[bctt tweet=” I could feel the Nokians sliding a little. So but nothing that a passenger would have ever noticed” username=”pellonauto”]

Volvo Winter Tyres Test

There was another incident in February when I hit sheet black-ice on a country road, which had already caused three recent vehicles (one a police car) to be stranded in the ditch and another embedded in a telegraph pole.

Safely for me, I could feel the Nokians sliding a little. So but nothing that a passenger would have ever noticed . My Volvo had no trouble at all slowing down. Luckily, keeping my car on the road, and driving around the crashed cars.
It is true that in  Europe they are recommended to fit  purely winter tyres.

Although we are now looking to fit more all-weather tyres. I think that the truth is that if you live in hilly district, then proper winter tyres should be used. In countries that are flat then all-weather tyres should be fitted. Therefore ,any upgrade of your tyre in winter will benefit us all with much safer roads.

After my conversation with the guy, I felt better about the public perception. Hence, about the knowledge that more and more drivers are more savvy about winter tyres.

General tyres was acquired by Continental in 1987. Hence, today, operating worldwide. As a result General manufactures tyres for cars, trucks and industrial applications. Including, specialty tyres for 4×4 vehicles.

From the start, the brand has been making tyres for all kinds of motor vehicles. Creating, a large choice of tyre sizes and patterns. Thus, General Tyre continues the long tradition of being the customers’ choice when it comes to Quality, Value and Performance. Especially, for the 4X4 and Altimax products that are produced.

Subsequently, founded in 1915. General Tyre are now based in Fort Mill, South Carolina. So can look back on a proud heritage. Having proven its ability to compete in the ever changing tyre industry. With manufacturing and technological advancements for 100 years.

Unknown, to many motorists. Of course, General tyres are owned and manufactured by the great Continental tyres group. As a result, the famous AT 4×4 tyre ranges are also made by General tyres. Consequently, some in the USA and some in Europe. Therefore, the attached video shows the great performance that these tyres can cope with in winter snow conditions and also in mud and slush.

Snow Testing General Altimax Winter Tyres

These days our customers are very well educated about the virtues of winter tyres. As expected, these tyres are also much safer than summer tyres in winter driving conditions. Many drivers also know about the 7 degrees temperature rule. Of course, many do know this. Accordingly, I will explain in simple terms. Hence, that winter tyres contain a “Silica”based component. Hence, this silica, allows the tyres compound to be flexible when the outside temperature falls bellow 7 Degrees.

Summer tyres do not silica added to their compound. This flexibility allows the tyres more aggressive tread grip better. Therefore, clearly seen in the video. As a result winter tyres are much safer than summer tyres when fitted in the winter months.

As we have all experienced this winter has been pretty tough. Especially after the so called “beast of the east” bringing a standstill to most of the roads of the UK. Of course some drivers are sensible and fit winter tyres to their vehicles. I also fit winter tyres to my vehicles. believe me they are really good.

My Ford Transit Comfort is fitted with a set of Nokian winter tyres. Believe me when I say that I never got stuck once. They were truly marvelous ? In fact one Saturday night I had to take my son to his girlfriends house in Wakefield West Yorkshire. The journey normally takes about a half hour. On the way a blizzard hit us ten minutes into our journey.

The snow settled very quickly and vehicles began to get stuck.

Even on the main roads. The scene soon became gridlocked as the snow was blown on high winds. Thus making driving impossible.

Except for my van. I quickly diverted onto the small roads that were not as badly affected by the now deepening snow. The Nokian winter tyres were doing a sterling job. Not once did I get stuck as I took as many back roads as possible. I arrived in Wakefield an hour later. So,dropped my son off and headed back home.

Once  again the main roads were grid locked. One main road out of Wakefield was blocked by a jackknifed  double decker bus. I did just the same and headed home on the back roads without any problems. The winter tyres were perfect? I am sure that there are many similar stories with drivers that were glad that they fit winter tyres. They are a known safety feature and save lives.

Nokian Winter Tyres Winners-Winter Not yet Over? A set of 4 for this Land Rover Freelander GS TD 4

Nokian Winter Tyres Winners

This winter is becoming one of the best years for our customers buying their first set of winter tyres.(Nokian Winter Tyres Winners)

It is probably due to the fact that we have had a run of cold snowy winters. Over the past three or four years and the need for winter tyres are slowly sinking in. We also have a large Polish community in the Halifax area. Of course this is where where my tyre-centre is situated.Polish people are familiar with the need for winter tyres. In fact I think it may now be compulsory in Poland to fit winter tyres from November to march. Hence, the same as some other European countries.

Which winter tyres ?

We have found over the years that as an independent tyre retailer, most customers think in two ways. Either they know exactly what they want, or they will take our recommendations. Of course, as to which brand and at what price to pay for their tyres.

Nokian Winter Tyres

Scenes like this will be common in the UK the first week of March 2018

The majority of our customers come to us on word of mouth recommendations. Because they have received good advice and service in the past. Subsequently, we know this because we do not advertise as such. Perhaps, only through social media sites and internet directories.

In the past when our profit margins were higher we would regularly take out full page ads in the local papers, costing us an arm and a leg, we never really knew if the ads paid off or not.Yokohama Winter Tyres

We have and still do sell many different brands of tyres including winter tyres. In the past two years we have been able to buy our tyres from the major tyre companies because we are a member of a buying group known as Point-S tyres.

Nokian Winter Tyres Winners

We were very happy to open an account with Nokian Winter Tyres . Because we knew from experience that this company made excellent tyres, including winter tyres. This will be our third year selling Nokian Winter Tyres Winners and we are pleased with the very good response we had from the drivers who have experienced these tyres in winter conditions. The Halifax area is very hilly, we are in the foothills of the Pennine mountain range and therefore we have very tricky roads. Especially in winter snowy conditions.

The latest car to arrive for a set of four Nokian Winter Tyres was a Land Rover-Freelander 2-GS-TD4. This nice looking car had a set of four 235/65R17 108H  Winter tyres. It’s great when you love the job that you are doing and can write about it in our company blog.

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres-Really Worth Considering for the Harsh Yorkshire Winters

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres

Michelin also makes Michelin Alpin 5 Winter tyres

I was thinking that it is a good time to write this post about winter tyres when the winter is just a few months away and we did not have much snow this time last year  (at least not in Yorkshire UK). But we are Michelin Alpin 5only two months from next winter? So, (what the heck).

We find that more and more of our regular customers are now buying these tyres.  So many in fact that we decided a few years ago when we had our first cold and snowy winter, that we would start a “tyre hotel”. This is where the customer buys a set of winters and we fit the   Winter Car Tyres  and store the summer ones until the spring and then change the tyres over again. We charge for this service, but the tyres will last then three or even four winters, depending on the make and quality.

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres

This has always been a grey area to me? Which make of tyre do you recommend do you go for best which in my opinion would be the Yokohama winter tyre range, the Bridgestone Blizzac or the Michelin Alpin series including the new Michelin Alpin 5

Michelin Tyres UK is probably the Worlds most respected tyre makers and like most French companies always bring French flair into the design process. This new Michelin Alpin 5 is

no exception to the rules. France has many mountain ski resorts Snow Tyres and the Michelin winter tyres are well tested and designed to give the French tyre buying public a no choice option, the French love to buy home brand products, as any visitors to France will not fail to observe the amount of French made cars that they buy and it is the same with other products.

Going back to the Dark Age’s winter tyres were chunky things with loads of tread rubber and were very noisy. Only rich people could afford them because they had to have them fitted to go abroad (mainly France) on skiing holidays. Because of the heavy tread patterns, the tyres were very noisy and no good for travelling at speed on motorways. Tyre manufacturers began to refine these tyres as our cars became faster and more motorways were being built across the whole of Europe.

Drivers in Germany would set off skiing for a long weekend in their BMW’s and Mercedes.

travel down the Autobahn (German Motorway) at 100 mph+ and then go up the mountains of Austria and France for a weekends skiing. It was clear that a different type of winter tyre had to be developed to cope with this new type of driving experience. Michelin developed the Michelin Alpin 5 and other tyre makers followed. They used different compounds (silicas were added) and included thousands of small slits in the pattern design, known as (Sipes) .

These sipes did two things scattered the snow, mud and water and made the tyre much quieter to drive on and therefore a more comfortable drive at speed on the motorways in winter.

This is where Michelin winter tyres are the leaders.

The new Alpin 5, has been even more improved to give even more driver comforts when using their cars in the winter months whatever the weather throws at them.

The studies conducted by the Traffic Accident Research Chair of Dresden University in Germany (VUFO)*, European motorists drive mainly on cold roads in winter, whether dry or wet, but do not have to deal with snow very often, although since the report we have experienced an increase in colder weather and more snowfall. The report showed that 92% of accidents occurred on dry or wet roads and the remaining 8% on icy or snow covered roads. This where the winter tyre gives the motorist protection in winter with winter tyres fitted to their cars, they are more protected even on wet roads with winter tyre fitted.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Contrary to this article we find that UK customers DO buy winter tyres

Bridgestone tyres have indeed brought out  new Bridgestone Blizzard Winters. In my opinion this is a step that the other leading tyre makers are making, a more varied amount of winter products.

One of our biggest sellers here in Halifax was Yokohama “W” winter tyres they were very popular sellers.

Another reason that I do not agree with this article is because we are now much more conscious about changing our summers  with winters  because of the colder winters that we are now experiencing.

We have now been operating a “winter tyre hotel” for the past three years, not only does it work for us but it keeps in touch with our customers at least twice a year when they come in for theirs changing.

these with many sipe patterns to help get rid of the slush and wet that we associate with bad winter driving conditions. They have also added silica to the tyre compound to enable them  to remain flexible when driving in freezing temperatures.

The design is topped up with by adding  a centre rib and extra shoulder  blocks to the  tread area, for extra strength when cornering, giving these larger vehicles better handling and wet braking when driving in winter conditions. Here is some advice about driving in  winter conditions.

Apollo Winter Tyres to the Rescue in Yorkshire Crematorium for Halifax Funeral Company

Apollo Winter Tyres

Apollo Winter Tyres to the RescueApollo Winter Tyres

In early November we received a phone call from a local undertaker. Melia Funeral Services, here in Halifax, West Yorkshire in England UK.

winter tyres

Hearses with their new winter tyres  fitted

No problem there. Because throughout the year the company normally just have a puncture fixed now and then. This is due to the fact. Hence, that their hearses do not do much mileage. Usually drive at a snail’s pace, when driving to the cemetery or crematorium.

However this call was different. Melias wanted to buy two sets of Apollo Winter Tyres for their hearses. The reason for this was that the hearses were getting stuck on the incline to the chapel in Elland crematorium, and were getting a little embarrassed when getting stuck.

We thought it was a bit funny at first but they had obviously given the problem some thought and were not prepared to get stuck this coming winter. I actually visited this crematorium  to take a look for myself, but the incline is not that steep. I think it is because the hearse drives really slowly. In a normal car you could probably take a run at this and clear it easily, even without special Apollo Winter Tyres fitted.

Apollo Winter tyres fitted

The strange thing is that last winter was the mildest for twenty years and the snowfall was minimalistic. The funeral company have kept the tyres on all year round and now that we are approaching the new cold spell, they will be keeping their fingers crossed that they did not waste their money and we have a couple of spells of snow to try out their new Apollo Winter Tyres

Here in Halifax we are in a very hilly area and sell many sets of these wheels but this is the most unusual reason that I have heard of, the hearses came in and we fitted 2 sets of 22560R16 Apollo Winter Tyres and the hearses won’t get stuck again.(we hope?) .

SUV Winter tyres for extra safety

It always amazes me the amount of SUV drivers that visit my garage here in Halifax UK, are not aware of the dangers that they face when driving in any kind of winter weather .SUV Winter tyres

Even if it does not snow. So, the cold and wet weather will affect the way that their SUV vehicle. Hence, will perform on the roads, and they will be much safer. Thus on SUV Winter tyres.

I can now say without doubt, that this is a true fact. The article says that the SUVs on summer tyres. Are involved in more accidents relating to the weather conditions. Than on normal type saloon cars. The tyre sizes and overall diameters. Making the SUV vehicles more vulnerable in winter weather. Therefore, there is no doubt that SUV Winter tyres. So, will enhance the safety of the vehicle in winter weather.

SUV Winter tyres

Also many SUV drivers are not aware that their vehicles are only fitted with summer tyres. Of course, when they are first purchased. SUV Winter tyres have to be bought separately. They seem to be lulled into a false sense of security.Especially, when they see that their cars are fitted with big fat wheels and tyres. So, the truth is that this type of tyre will act in the opposite direction. Of course, when they are faced with cold temperatures and rain and snow. Indeed this type of tyre with its wide tread area acts exactly in the wrong direction, and makes the vehicles unstable on the icy and wet winter roads.

As the article states last year the AA alone had to rescue 8000 motorists who were stuck in ice snow and mud, and all this could have been prevented if the vehicle owners had fitted winter tyres. So if you take my advice it is not too late to fit a set of SUV Winter tyres on your SUV particularly, but on any vehicle, foe a safer winters driving.
