Winter Weather Wrong Tyres-Compilation of Ridiculous Car Crash and Slip and Slide Winter Weather

Winter Weather Wrong Tyres

Winter Weather Wrong Tyres

I dont know about you, but i love to watch these videos. Because there was no drivers killed or hurt, then I am OK with this. It does however show and indeed warn drivers about the long cold winter nights. Hence and how we as motorists should expect and prepare for snow and ice. I would say that road safety is a prime consideration to all drivers.

In my opinion the first consideration should be to fit winter tyres. The end of october and early November is the best time for this. Here in Halifax, UK. we have already had our first snow fall. Thus, prompting hundreds of safety conscious motorists to fit winter tyres. I cannot over emphasise the term “Safety”. Drivers with experience of winter tyres. naturally, know the huge benefits of fitting safer tyres.

Winter tyres are streets ahead when it comes to gripping and stopping your car in bad winter weather. This video is a good example of what can go wrong when driving on ice and snow. I cannot claim that the cars in the video have winter tyre fitted or not. I do however suspect that they indeed “do not” have winter tyres fitted.

Winter Tyres-4x4 Tyres

Winter Tyres-4×4 Tyres-A comparison to investigate which is the best? – from Auto Express

Winter Tyres-4×4 Tyres

Winter Tyres-4×4 Tyres

Britain could face a particularly harsh winter this year. Hence, with snow falling from as early as this November. Therefore, if you’ve got a four-wheel drive car, you probably think you’re car is safe to use in snow and slushy conditions. Or is it?

Auto Express a well renowned and trusted motoring magazine.Went up to Tamworth Snowdome. Thus, to find out if a regular front-wheel drive family car that was fitted with winter tyres. Has more traction in the snowy conditions, than a 4×4 vehicle fitted out with summer tyres . The auto magazine used two Ford Kugas. Naturally, both with the same 2.0-litre diesel engines with manual gearboxes. Of course, one of the vehicles is front-wheel drive, and the other vehicle all-wheel drive. naturally, the 4×4 Ford Kuga costing much more than the normal family saloon.

One of the problems with summer tyres is that the rubber compound gets harder and less grippy in cold and snowy conditions. Of course, winter tyres are equipped with a much softer compound. because the tread pattern that’s designed to pick up snow and slush. Then this improves the tyres grip in extreme cold and snowy conditions.

Accordingly, the front-wheel drive car on summer tyres was not very good in the snow .The car was then fitted with winter tyres.Naturally, the car gripped better in the snow with an all-round better performance. However, they also tested the 4×4 kitted out with summer tyres. So the results could surprise you.

Tamworth Snowdome used to test out Winter Tyres-4×4 Tyres

With winter tyres. The normal Kuga went 110 metres up the slope. While the 4×4 car only made it 13 metres up. Before sliding back down 9 metres. In the end. It ended up no further than the standard did with summer tyres. We also tested the four-wheel drive Ford Kuga with winter tyres – and the difference was astonishing. There was plenty of grip and the car drove all the way to the top of the steep ski slope without a problem.

Obviously, the best solution for driving on snow is to have a 4×4 on winter tyres – without the right rubber, a 4×4 is just as useless as a two wheel drive car.

Having four-wheel drive won’t help with braking, though – and that’s much more important.

Lexus Tyre Winter Tyres

Lexus Tyre Winter Tyres-Another video from the reputable Lexus car company about Winter Tyres

Lexus Tyre Winter Tyres

Lexus Tyre Winter Tyres

It is now approaching autumn and then winter. I look forward to winter time. As expected, the weather will deteriorate. For this reason, we can all expect the possibility of ice and in some area, the dreaded snow. During the winter months, it’s not just ice and snow that make our roads slippery and difficult to drive on, even cold and damp conditions can make driving a dangerous task.

Winter tyres have been designed and developed to provide a much better grip and safety in all of the inclement weather conditions. This is the main reason why tyre retailers, like ourselves,(Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, UK). Thus, recommend that our customers fit winter tyres. Of course, many of our clients fit winter tyres every November without fail.

I am not the only one that tries to educate the virtues of winters.Because this is an industry wide attempt to make our roads much safer.Especially, in the more extreme winter weather that will be hitting us shortly. Lexus have also joined in. Thus by creating this video. Many drivers are visual, and this also applies to me. I can pick up things much more quickly when I see it on TV or a Video. Hence, I have started to post my blogs, including a video.

I am entirely convinced about the attributes of winter tyres. So are my customers. Therefore, we have had many testimonials from our existing clients. Over the past five years, we have built our winter tyre business, without any expensive advertising. All our sales have come from the word of mouth.Of course from satisfied customers.

In fact, we even have customers who can’t wait for the first snow- fall of the winter. They never get used to the traction, stability and grip. Hence, that their winter tyres give them in the snowy weather.

Winter Tyres-Could fitting them Affect Your Car Insurance?

I always find it strange to hear my customers say “will my car be insured if I fit winter tyres”. I used to think that they were joking at first, but for some reason, they were very serious, apparently it was something that they had read in a national newspaper. When I checked this out, it said that if you modify or change your car from the original specs, then you should

Kumho winter tyres are very popular.

inform your insurance company, or you could not be insured in case that you had an accident. I suspect that this covers thousands of motorists driving about today, “with what they would consider minor adjustments” to their cars, such as fitting winter tyres, or a “go faster stripe “down the side.

There is no doubt that winter tyres do affect your cars performance, but only for the better by making the car drive with better control and brake better in winter weather from rain to ice and snow. As long as you sick to the same size and the advised load rating for your car, you should be fine and proud to fit the winter tyres.

Insurance companies should give you “discount” for fitting winter tyres

Even this year our customers have asked about the affect winter tyres can have on their insurance, so I thought that I would look into a little deeper and write an article about the subject. In my opinion I think that you should get a rebate from your insurance company if you make your car safer by fitting winters to it. In fact the big debate to me is “are cars with illegal part worn tyres insured” and the answer is NO, but I will look at that in a future article.

The problem has also become an issue with the insurers themselves after a deluge of inquiries from worried car owners, thinking that they would not be insured if they fitted these tyres to their car. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) the problem has been taken up with its members and now over 90% have agreed that they will not increase premiums for their customers that fit the correct winter tyres to their vehicles.

They also agreed that fitting winters to their car made for better road safety over the winter period, in fact many of the other European countries make it a law to fit winters between November and March of the following year, so why should the British motorists be penalized.

A statement from the ABI says; “often motor insurers will not charge an additional premium when their insured customers use winter tyres, provided that they meet, and are fitted in accordance with, the vehicle manufacturers’ specifications and are in a roadworthy condition”

If you are unsure about your own insurance company as regarding their stance on the matter, then you can either ring them up or go to the ABI website where insurers are listed, who comply with “good to fit winter tyres “ruling. The web address is… https://www.abi.org.uk/~/media/Files/Documents/Publications/Public/Migrated/Motor/ABI%20guide%20to%20winter%20tyres%20The%20motor%20insurance%20commitment.pdf

Winter tyres will not incur extra insurance costs

winter tyres

Scenes like this will soon be upon us,so prepare your car for the worse to come.

Have I have stated earlier in this article the insurance companies often increased the costs of your insurance if you modified your car in any way and did not inform them, things like an upgraded modified engine spring to mind. They regarded you as been more likely to have an accident, if you had modified your car and also your car may have become a bigger target to car thieves, so an extra premium would have been charged.

At first when winter tyres became more popular the insurance companies gave out mixed messages, but the ABI can now confirm that winter tyres are a safety issue and are a great improvement when fitted to your car through the winter period.

My own advice would be to inform your insurance company that you are fitting winter tyres. You will, not have to pay any extra premiums. Some companies do require you to inform than a list can be found on the ABI web-site. Nick Starling, ABI’s director of general insurance, said: “Insurers do not want to penalize motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads. Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists.”

Always fit the same size or a size recommended by your tyre dealer if a direct replacement cannot be found. Good tyre retailers will have a web site for converting the sizes over legally and should be accepted by the insurance companies. Some insurance companies such as Tesco and The Co-operative insurance company state that you are alright to fit winters but you should not oversize them. Over sizing any tyres is not a good thing anyway?

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres-Really Worth Considering for the Harsh Yorkshire Winters

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres

Michelin also makes Michelin Alpin 5 Winter tyres

I was thinking that it is a good time to write this post about winter tyres when the winter is just a few months away and we did not have much snow this time last year  (at least not in Yorkshire UK). But we are Michelin Alpin 5only two months from next winter? So, (what the heck).

We find that more and more of our regular customers are now buying these tyres.  So many in fact that we decided a few years ago when we had our first cold and snowy winter, that we would start a “tyre hotel”. This is where the customer buys a set of winters and we fit the   Winter Car Tyres  and store the summer ones until the spring and then change the tyres over again. We charge for this service, but the tyres will last then three or even four winters, depending on the make and quality.

Michelin Alpin 5 winter tyres

This has always been a grey area to me? Which make of tyre do you recommend do you go for best which in my opinion would be the Yokohama winter tyre range, the Bridgestone Blizzac or the Michelin Alpin series including the new Michelin Alpin 5

Michelin Tyres UK is probably the Worlds most respected tyre makers and like most French companies always bring French flair into the design process. This new Michelin Alpin 5 is

no exception to the rules. France has many mountain ski resorts Snow Tyres and the Michelin winter tyres are well tested and designed to give the French tyre buying public a no choice option, the French love to buy home brand products, as any visitors to France will not fail to observe the amount of French made cars that they buy and it is the same with other products.

Going back to the Dark Age’s winter tyres were chunky things with loads of tread rubber and were very noisy. Only rich people could afford them because they had to have them fitted to go abroad (mainly France) on skiing holidays. Because of the heavy tread patterns, the tyres were very noisy and no good for travelling at speed on motorways. Tyre manufacturers began to refine these tyres as our cars became faster and more motorways were being built across the whole of Europe.

Drivers in Germany would set off skiing for a long weekend in their BMW’s and Mercedes.

travel down the Autobahn (German Motorway) at 100 mph+ and then go up the mountains of Austria and France for a weekends skiing. It was clear that a different type of winter tyre had to be developed to cope with this new type of driving experience. Michelin developed the Michelin Alpin 5 and other tyre makers followed. They used different compounds (silicas were added) and included thousands of small slits in the pattern design, known as (Sipes) .

These sipes did two things scattered the snow, mud and water and made the tyre much quieter to drive on and therefore a more comfortable drive at speed on the motorways in winter.

This is where Michelin winter tyres are the leaders.

The new Alpin 5, has been even more improved to give even more driver comforts when using their cars in the winter months whatever the weather throws at them.

The studies conducted by the Traffic Accident Research Chair of Dresden University in Germany (VUFO)*, European motorists drive mainly on cold roads in winter, whether dry or wet, but do not have to deal with snow very often, although since the report we have experienced an increase in colder weather and more snowfall. The report showed that 92% of accidents occurred on dry or wet roads and the remaining 8% on icy or snow covered roads. This where the winter tyre gives the motorist protection in winter with winter tyres fitted to their cars, they are more protected even on wet roads with winter tyre fitted.

Contrary to this article we find that UK customers DO buy winter tyres

Bridgestone tyres have indeed brought out  new Bridgestone Blizzard Winters. In my opinion this is a step that the other leading tyre makers are making, a more varied amount of winter products.

One of our biggest sellers here in Halifax was Yokohama “W” winter tyres they were very popular sellers.

Another reason that I do not agree with this article is because we are now much more conscious about changing our summers  with winters  because of the colder winters that we are now experiencing.

We have now been operating a “winter tyre hotel” for the past three years, not only does it work for us but it keeps in touch with our customers at least twice a year when they come in for theirs changing.

Bridgestone have upgraded their SUV winter tyres range to include the Blizzak LM-80 EVO. Although these tyres have been out a couple of years now, they have proved to be a leader in the SUV winter tyre market.

The old words when describing Bridgestone Blizzard Winters certainly flow when introducing this wonderful tyre product. In line with most other tyre manufacturers, Bridgestone Blizzard Winters have designed

these with many sipe patterns to help get rid of the slush and wet that we associate with bad winter driving conditions. They have also added silica to the tyre compound to enable them  to remain flexible when driving in freezing temperatures.

The design is topped up with by adding  a centre rib and extra shoulder  blocks to the  tread area, for extra strength when cornering, giving these larger vehicles better handling and wet braking when driving in winter conditions. Here is some advice about driving in  winter conditions.

SUV Winter tyres for extra safety

It always amazes me the amount of SUV drivers that visit my garage here in Halifax UK, are not aware of the dangers that they face when driving in any kind of winter weather .SUV Winter tyres

Even if it does not snow. So, the cold and wet weather will affect the way that their SUV vehicle. Hence, will perform on the roads, and they will be much safer. Thus on SUV Winter tyres.

I can now say without doubt, that this is a true fact. The article says that the SUVs on summer tyres. Are involved in more accidents relating to the weather conditions. Than on normal type saloon cars. The tyre sizes and overall diameters. Making the SUV vehicles more vulnerable in winter weather. Therefore, there is no doubt that SUV Winter tyres. So, will enhance the safety of the vehicle in winter weather.

SUV Winter tyres

Also many SUV drivers are not aware that their vehicles are only fitted with summer tyres. Of course, when they are first purchased. SUV Winter tyres have to be bought separately. They seem to be lulled into a false sense of security.Especially, when they see that their cars are fitted with big fat wheels and tyres. So, the truth is that this type of tyre will act in the opposite direction. Of course, when they are faced with cold temperatures and rain and snow. Indeed this type of tyre with its wide tread area acts exactly in the wrong direction, and makes the vehicles unstable on the icy and wet winter roads.

As the article states last year the AA alone had to rescue 8000 motorists who were stuck in ice snow and mud, and all this could have been prevented if the vehicle owners had fitted winter tyres. So if you take my advice it is not too late to fit a set of SUV Winter tyres on your SUV particularly, but on any vehicle, foe a safer winters driving.

Are Snow Tyres More Important than AWD in the Snow?

Carscoops (blog)

There’s a common misconception that an all-wheel drive car is all one needs to be safe when driving in winter.

Eric Roberts says

SUV owners should be looking for winter tyres

It is a huge misconception that the owners of SUV vehicles are safe when driving in the winter time. These large vehicles are normally fitted with some kind of sport

snow tyres

Nissan terrano for 4 Yokohama snow tyres fitting

summer tyres and because they have big wheels and wide tyres, the owners think that they can go any ware in different driving conditions.

I remember a few years ago when we had our worse snow for a few years. The phone was red hot with SUV drivers trying to get some winter tyres. As luck would have it we deal with a German tyre company and were able to pick up some stock, but there was certain sizes that were completely unavailable.

What the public don’t realise is that the tyre manufacturers make winter tyres in summer and most of them are sent to the countries that have to have snow tyres fitted by law. These include Germany, Switzerland, Austria and a few more that slip my mind. We and the rest of Europe have to take

Things are now getting better with the importing of many snow tyres coming from the Far East. Yokohama from Japan are also an excellent winter tyre and are available in many sizes including tyres for the SUV vehicles. We also recommend General winter tyres but they only make the tyres for the average saloon car.

So the moral of this article is to get yourself some snow tyres for your SUV before they start to run after the first snow.

Winter tyres grip-can help you get a grip in the cold and the Snow- Evening Telegraph

It pleases me very much to see how the British public have responded to the efforts of the owners of tyre outlets and the many motoring publications, that have been

advising the public about the advantages and safety features of fitting winter tyres to your car.

What started me off committing myself to this subject was the massive increase of traffic on our roads, combined with the worsening winters that we were getting. This in my eyes makes road safety, especially where brakes and other road safety factors are concerned. Cars are travelling and accelerating at much faster speeds and therefore requires better braking systems and tyre technology. The latter is probably my specialist subject and a subject that I am passionate about, therefor the advice that I give to drivers and my customers is in their best interest.

Winter tyres grip

Winter tyres grip (Photo credit: Travelling Steve)

The subject of whether or not to fit winters in November time or not, to me is a “no brainer”. Here in West Yorkshire winter will shortly arriving , in fact this morning the local council gritting trucks are out gritting the icy roads. Winter tyres have a special compound that has silicone added to the rubber compound.

Winter tyres grip

Of course, this ensures that the winters remain flexible in freezing weather conditions, and are still able to maintain there grip on icy or snowy roads. On the other hand a summer ones that do not have additives will begin to harden when the temperature drops below 7 degrees centigrade, when Winter tyres grip . The effect is similar to your wiper blades, we all know that in cold weather that your wiper blades become very hard and will not clean the windscreen, all other rubber items have the same affect, and do not work correctly in cold weather.

If the tyre does not flex because of the cold, then the tread will not be able to do the job of gripping, especially in cold weather or on a very dirty rainy day when you may be traveling at 70 mph on a motorway. Winters will flex and give you the full tread onto the road, together with a much better designed tread pattern made especially for wet and snowy winter conditions, there is no doubt that Winter tyres grip . You owe it to yourself and your family to be as safe as possible on our very busy roads in winter time, none of us know what the weather will throw at us on any given day,(not even the weather man)

When you been in the tyre trade as long as I have. Then we often get offered opportunities to help test new tyres. Hence, from the different tyre manufacturers. You may wonder what this has to do with SUV winter tyres. But a couple of years ago I was offered a chance to test drive some SUV vehicle. Thus, fitted with Vredestein SUV Winter Tyres. So to prove how different this type of car performed on winter tyres.

The cars included many different models. Including the new Range Rover the new Porsche Cayenne and the BMW MX and Mercedes ML models. We were all flown to Austria and headed for the mountains.

SUV Tyres-Fear in my eyes

All the cars were fitted with the excellent Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme tyres. Which were designed by the great car designer Giugiari. of course, the cars were driven by professional test drivers (and boy did I know it). I was in the passenger seat and another couple of guys were in the back.

We climbed upwards until we reached the snow line. The drivers then let loose, they were that confident with the snow tyres fitted that they drove these SUVs like mad men. We were driven on ice and snow through forested areas and up and down steep ravines at high speed . I had never been as frightened in my life, my eyes were popping out with fear. I was ever so glad when the tyre tests were finished, but it proved to how good these cars were with SUV Winter Tyres fitted.

Most of these cars come fitted with summer tyres when new so it is well worth investing in a set of SUV Winter Tyres to give you full driver confidence when the Apollo suv Winter Tyreswinter weather comes along, as many drivers of these vehicles found to their cost when they got stuck in snow and ice in the last few winters.
