BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor-WHEEL ALIGNMENT can throw the “Steering Angle Sensor on your Merc ML / BMW X5

Post Updated 26th Dec 2013

BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor;Be aware on these models when you have the wheel alignment adjusted

BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor

This Mercedes ML Brabus is equipped with EPS system it is wise to get the correct equipment to be able to reset the BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor after a wheel alignment has been carried out. We only learned about this after the event.

While we are carrying out a wheel alignment on a Mercedes ML, we noticed that a warning light came on, on the dash . This warning light was for the “Steering Angle Sensor”. This is now common place on many models of Mercedes, BMW and Audi cars and SUVs. It basically informs the driver if the wheels are straight in-line or not, but BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor can be caused by a wheel alignment correction at a garage or Autocentre.

This is usually on cars that have an ESP system that controls the cars steering and braking, and the sensor is built into the steering wheel. We have found out many companies who build and manufacture Four-Wheel Alignment machines are now aware of the problem and are making small machines that are linked to the wheel alignment machines so that the code for the BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor can be re-set. One such company is Pro-Align who now a new piece of equipment to enable the codes to be re-set .

Wheel alignment could set off a warning light.

We at Pellon tyres are going to upgrade our arsenal of electrical diagnosis equipment to enable us to correct the problem so that we can happily carry out  alignments without worrying about setting the warning off and having to pay a Mercedes garage for the light on the dash re-set. If you are the owner of this type of car you should be aware of this problem before you have your  alignment adjustedhttp://www.pro-align.co.uk/

Wheel Alignment-Toeing Out-Tyre wear-Toe in and Toe out cause irregular tyre wear

Wheel Alignment-Toeing Out

Wheel Alignment-Toeing Out; settings that are crucial to your tyre wear

When having your wheels aligned. (usually after having new tyres fitted). It is important to remember. That the most critical setting is called the “Toe”. If your wheel alignment is out from the correct setting. Thus, by as little as 1/32 of an inch.As a result,  then each tyre on the axle will scrub 3 1/2 feet sideways for every mile driven on. Hence, causing your tyres to wear out prematurely. This makes Laser Wheel Alignment paramount and a money saver.

The “toe” in or out. Accordingly, determines the way that the tyres will operate. As a result,  in relationship to the centre line of the vehicle. When the toe is not straight and is pointing in or out determines the way your tyre will wear. For example, if your wheels were “toeing out” then your tyres would wear on the inside if they were “toeing in”then your tyres would wear on the outside. As the car drives along the road, a rear wheel drive car pushes the front tyres and the fact that the toe is out caused resistance in a rearward movement of the suspension arms against the bearings.

Front wheel drive cars pull the vehicle along resulting in a forward movement of the of the suspension arm against the bearings, for rear wheel drive cars a positive toe is used to correct the suspension movement, and for front wheel drive cars a negative toe is used.

Wheel Alignment-Toeing Out can  alter the vehicle’s handling, increasing the toe-in will reduce oversteer and adjusting the cars Wheel Alignment-Toeing Out will reduce understeer, by doing this it will cause adverse tyre wear, although the vehicle will have better steering and handling. It is always better to adjust the settings as recommended by the car manufacturers handbook.

Wheel Alignment-Toeing Out

Before you adjust the toe outside of the manufacturers” recommended specs” to give the vehicle better handling beware that the toe settings affect the tyre wear. The toe out on our wheel alignment machine is measured on the turn plates. The wheel alignment machines take the readings, and they are measured by a laser beam and reflected onto the display screen. Our wheel alignment machine will give a reading for inside and outside wheel this reading is in degrees. When the wheels are straight ahead, the readings should be at zero.

The steering wheel should be in a straight position and locked into place before the wheel alignment adjustment is made.

Toe out angles are registered by the angle of the Power Steering this allows the inside wheel to turn at a sharper angle compared to the outside wheel. Steering arms are part of the steering knuckle or the ball joints and are not adjustable. Problems with toe out are often due to a damaged steering arm and must be replaced.

Renault Clio Steering Wheel Not straight- needed Wheel Alignment?

Renault Clio Steering Wheel Not straight

Renault Clio Steering Wheel Not straight; Wheel alignment would have stopped this. Renault Clio Steering Wheel Not straight

Here at Pellon tyres, we are always getting customers cars with bad wheel alignment problems. The latest being a Renault Clio that the client presented to us for an MOT test that they had booked in “online”.The picture in this blog shows precisely the condition that the tyre was in, the tyre was down to the steel belt of the tyre construction, a very dangerous state to find your tyres in. If this customer checked his wheel alignment at regular periods, then the tyre would not have been in that state.

Drivers should always check their Wheel Alignment, whenever you buy a set of new tyres . It is also a great idea to have a wheel alignment when suspension parts will be replaced, or you knowingly hit the curb or going over things like speed bumps in the road. It may not appear so at the time, but your wheel alignment will probably be out of line and cause damage to your tyres.

Wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels

The first static suspension angles that need to be measured and adjusted are the caster, camber, toe, and thrust angle. Another good reason to track your is to straighten your steering back to a level position; All these problems will be solved and corrected through wheel alignment adjustment.

Nice Triumph Spitfire-calls into Pellon Tyres for a “Wheel Alignment” Takes Me Back!

Nice Triumph Spitfire; No wheel alignment ?

Eric Roberts 8/7/2011. wheel alignment.

During the week I was walking through my garage work area.  I spotted a very nice Triumph Spitfire on a ramp having a wheel alignment by one of my mechanics Dale Linton. I could hardly believe my eyes, this was a fine specimen of a car.

This model was now classed as a vintage car here in the UK. Never the less it  still looked good to day against our modern sports cars. Cars such as the small Mazda’ s. This particular car had been really looked after and restored by its owner. He had brought the car to us for two General tyres and a wheel alignment. I had a conversation with the owner as this car brought back fond

memories of my youth and I think it was my second car although I am sure that I had a couple of minis before upgrading to a Triumph Spitfire, my first “sports car”.

My spitfire experience was short lived however. I remember fitting two new 155×13 Dunlop tyres to the front. However  for some reason in those days,(mid sixties) we did not do any wheel alignment , in a general tyre fitting bay, It was due to go to the garage to be done as this was a job for a regular garage and the two kinds of businesses operated separately, not like to-day where we are classed as auto centres and now do all car work under one roof. I was to have the wheel alignment done after the three day holiday.

Nice Triumph Spitfire

Anyway after having my new tyres fitted I set off to a seaside resort in Yorkshire UK called Scarborough, (it was a pilgrimage for young people to visit the resort on most bank holidays, here in the North of England), I met up with some friends in a small village at a party, but we decided to leave the party and go into Scarborough for the evening fun.

I set off in my gleaming “spitfire” and my friend followed in his old Austin Cambridge,(now another vintage car). We headed for the main A64 route into the resort, we went down a small country road and round a sharp bend . We came across the A64 at great speed, I slammed all on with the brakes but my friends car would not stop crashing into the back of me. Luckily no one was hurt, but both cars were “write off’s”.

Never did get my “wheel alignment”

My Nice Triumph Spitfire was a write off after only three weeks of ownership. My car was towed back to Dewsbury and it never got the wheel alignment done at garage what a sad day.

What Causes Your Wheel Alignment To Be Out ??

Wheel Alignment Saves Money

Wheel Alignment Saves Money

In the Halifax area of West Yorkshire, we have a high incidence of cars requiring Wheel Alignment, the primary reason for this is driving over potholes and speed bumps, this can alter the vehicle’s steering and suspension geometries or damage critical components such as tyres and steering parts. Out of aligned wheels, reduce the vehicles safety or create extra running costs, also destroying the tyres prematurely, but by ensuring the wheels are correctly aligned, this will be avoided, and drivers can minimise the effects of any pothole or speed bump damage and ensure they remain as safe as possible.

The recent severe weather will inevitably increase the number of potholes. And will be the cause of the damage. Because the holes may be covered over with snow and ice. This severe weather could cause some serious safety issues for drivers, if a motorist knows that they have gone down a pothole they should get their alignment checked, most auto centres will give you a free Car Wheel Alignment check, and you only pay if the alignment is out and it needs adjusting.

Wheel Alignment Saves Money

Another sign that your wheel alignment is out. Therefore, is that your steering wheel may not be straight. Consequently, this will need all the front alignment re-setting. Naturally, this could take an hour or two you could incur an extra cost. So it may be wise if you asked for an estimate of the cost. Another thing you should watch for when having your alignment checked is the problem of seized up steering parts. It is a possibility that the  garage or auto centre may have to use some form of heat to free off seized steering parts; This will take much longer, and an extra charge will usually be applied, a good once a top auto centre will warn you of this and give you the choice of to have it done or not.

Wheel Alignment Saves Money

Any good Tyre operator will give you a full tyre service for free, he will check your tyre pressures, your tyre tread depth, in the UK the tread depth is 1.6 mm for 3/4 of the tread width from the centre of the tread to the edges, the will also check your tyres for bulges and cuts and then inflate your tyres to the correct pressures, this will be all part of the service which should be carried out with a smile if not go somewhere else.

Wheel Alignment Saves Money

Wheel Alignment Saves Money; To sum up have your Laser Wheel Alignment  carried out at regular intervals. Especially, if you think that you have hit a pothole. Or gone over a speed bump too fast. You should always have the alignment checked. Especially,  if you are having new tyres fitted. In addition. Even if the auto centre asks you to come back later. A few days will not scrub your tyres off. Furthermore, have your pressures and tyre wear checked regularly. If you have any doubt of what tyre to buy always go for a mid-range make. This will mean that you get good quality and the tyres will be cheaper than a branded make. Once again a good garage or auto centre will be glad to help and check your tyres for free.ELast Line From The Boss about Wheel Alignment Saves Money

Pot-Holes Time Again- Driving over Pot-Holes Damage Your Wheels and Alignment

Pot-Holes Time Again; Eric Roberts explains the importance of wheel alignment on your car.

In the North England we experience many vehicle owners wanting (Wheel Alignment), the primary cause for this is Pot-Holes Time Again in the road and speed humps, this can change the automobile’s steering and suspension settings or smash critical parts such as tyres and steering components.

Pot-Holes Time Again

Pot-Holes Time Again

Potholes, reduce the cars safety and add expensive extra costs,  damaging the tyres prematurely, but by ensuring the wheels are correctly aligned,  and motorists can eliminate the effects of any pothole or speed bump injuries and make sure they stay as safe as possible.
The latest heavy rain will, without a doubt, add to some potholes. Furthermore, these holes cause the destruction. The holes are covered with slush and snow. These holes can cause many safety issues for motorists. Consequently, if a driver knows that they have hit a pothole they must get their wheel alignment checked out, most garages will give you a” free of charge” tracking test and you only pay for the job if the wheel alignment is out.
An added sign that your wheel alignment is out. Will be that your steering wheel is out of line. Often needing all the front wheel alignment readjusting and possibly will take an hour or two to do, you could have an add-on charge, so it may be sensible if you asked for an estimate of the cost.

Pot-Holes Time Again; A further thing you should look out for when having your wheel alignment checked is the possibility of rusted up steering parts.

Most auto centres have to use some form of heating equipment. Heating will free off seized up driving components; The job of heating will take more labour time. A further charge may by added. Once again an excellent auto centre will advise you of this. And give you the option of to have the job done or not, it will be your choice.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles. As members of Unipart Car Care Centres and give a federal guarantee for all our work and parts. Car Servicing-Halifax-UK-Some advice about keeping your car in good and safe condition

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK; Many motorists have major problems when it comes to  car servicing,

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK; Most cars need an annual” major servicing”, and in my belief depending on mileage should have one or even two what I call “engine servicing” every year.  This, as a rule, means the oil and filter changed  and the rest of the levels topped up. Cars over three years old could and perhaps should have the main service carried out at the same time as the MOT test.

Your garage should advise you to have test carried out prior to the servicing, this is always best practice and is recommended by the Ministry of Transport as the correct procedure. It also gives you control of your purse strings, indeed,  what you should do is instruct the garage to notify you of any failures that the test may throw up. You must also ask your garage to give you an estimate of the cost of repairs to your car to get your car through the test.
Many customers of servicing centres do this because if the cost of your repair schedule is high, you may not be able to afford to have the car serviced, indeed you can then cancel the service for a later time when you can afford to have the servicing carried out. The finest practice though is to have the test and the service carried out on the same day. This will ensure that you car will be in tip top condition for your summer holidays or indeed that harsh winter to come.

Look for a Unipart servicing centre

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK

Most accomplished garages  carry out servicing  cars to a high standard. They will carry out menu servicing according to the manufacturers advice. Indeed many garages and auto centres use a servicing  menu. That is specialized for your car by typing your registration number into an  automotive computer. Using software that prints out the exact service menu for your car. This also tells the engineer the exact type of oils to use.  This is essential due the different types of oil now used in up to date car engines. Another benefit of using this technology. Is that the processor will recommend on the time or mileage it takes before your cam belt requires changing. This, in turn, should come in the form of recommendation written as an advisory on your “work to do  sheet”.

Car Servicing-Halifax

Another good piece of advice is that if you are new to an area. You do not know where to have your car serviced it look for a garage carrying the MotorCodes Code Of Practise sign .This will ensure that you will get reasonable prices for a service and repairs.Because the garage has been checked for good practice and procedures by the RAC of Great Britain. Therefore any quality control procedures by the auto centre should give you confidence enough that if any problems occur. Consequently they will be dealt with in a fair and correct conduct. In general, any garage you carries out MOT testing,  are generally up to a good quality and are also regulated  and  controlled by the Vehicle Standards Agency.

Also try to go to a servicing centre,

that is regulated by a trade organisation, then if a dispute arises your dilemma can go into the negotiation and with a” bit of luck” resolved. Road Potholes-Could Mean Wheel Alignment many more mechanical Problems

Road Potholes; wheel alignment reduces your “tyre wear.”

In the Calderdale district of North England, we experience a high incidence of vehicle owners needing Wheel Alignment. The main causes for this is driving over

Road Potholes

Road Potholes; This car hit a pothole and broke the spring

Holes in the road. This is because the local council are reluctant to carry out Repairs. This includes safety humps. This can change the car’s steering and suspension geometries. Potholes can also  break key parts such as suspension and steering components. This effect can reduce the vehicle’s safety or add expensive extra costs. The effect can also damage the cars structure permanently. But by ensuring the wheels are precisely aligned, will be avoided. Motorists can eliminate the effects of any pothole or speed bump injury and make sure they stay as safe as possible.

The latest bad frosts will, without the doubt, multiply the quantity of potholes that cause the destruction. Because mud and snow could hide the potholes. Then it can cause some serious safety issues for motorists. If a driver knows that they have hit a pothole they must get their  Wheel Alignment

Road Potholes

Most garages will give you a free of a charge tracking (alignment) check, and you will only pay for the job if the wheel alignment is out, and it needs adjusting(except for Four-Wheel Alignment).

Wheel alignment should be carried out at regular intervalsRoad Potholes

Furthermore, to sum up, have your wheel alignment was done at regular periods, especially if you think that you have hit a deep hole or run over a safety hump at speed. Continually have the wheel alignment corrected if you are having new tyres mounted on your wheels. Your tyre centre may ask you to come back afterwards. Then a few days motoring will not effect the wear on your tyres. Have your pressures and tyre wear checked methodically. If you have any doubt which tyres to buy, then go for a mid-range make, this will mean that you get good quality tyres, and the tyres will be at a better price than a leading make. Once again a good garage or tyre depot will be happy to help and check your tyres free of charge. Also your wheel alignment of course.

Wheel Balancing is Important for that perfect ride?

wheel balancing

Wheel balancing is important because it keeps your tyres, bearings and suspension system in order.

Source: affordableautohopkins.com

This is a short but to the point article about the importance of having your wheels balanced.

it is something that we in the tyre trade keep harping on about, but never the less is important, most of us have witnessed their wheels out of balance, and had Wheel Balancing Problems when the steering wheel starts to shake driving down the motorway (freeway).

https://www.pellonautocentre.com/centrelesswheels.htm

Wheel Balancing  will give you a better ride

Wheel balancing is one of the things in motoring terms that we take for granted? When I first started working in the tyre industry, we had a small piece of equipment that we would use to

wheel balancing

Old style static bubble wheel balancer

balance the wheels, whenever we fitted a new tyre.

This was known as a bubble-balancer, and that is exactly what it was. You would sit a wheel on top of the balancer and a bubble, similar to the ones in spirit level, would tell you when the wheel was out of balance by the tilt on the wheel and we had to counteract this at the opposite side by adding lead weights.

When the wheel was level and the bubble was dead central then the job was done and the wheel was fitted onto the car. The cars in those days were things like Ford Poplars and Morris 1000’s and so did not travel very far or go very fast.

Sit on Wheel Balancer was our first electric balancer.

There are different types of out of balance, “static balance”; vertical shaking that can come from a heavy spot on the tyre. This is what we would try to cure on our bubble balancer. This could also be cured on the next machine that came into use.

The machine was a sit on machine known as a On Car Wheel Balancing machine made by “Repco” and we would jack up the car put machine against the car wheel and we would then spin the electrically driven machine up to high speed. While the wheel was spinning a strobe light would make look like the wheel was in a still position we would then stop the machine with a type of brake and put a counter balance weight on the wheel depending where the tyres valve could be seen.

This method of wheel balancing was horrific.

The older guys in the industry will remember the fact that the wheels would shake violently and then the vibrations would shake the cars to bits, whilst the poor customer looked on with terror in his eyes. This reminds of the “roller brake tester” used on the modern MOT test, when the car gets shaken to bits, having a brake test.

This method of balancing was not for the faint hearted and I was glad to see the back of them.

The next set of wheel balancers were the fore runners to today’s sophisticated machines. We would put the wheel on a spindle and spin it by hand. These balancers would correct “static”

wheel balancing

Aaron with our up to date modern wheel balancer

and “dynamic” out of balancing. The modern wheel balancer is equipped with many sensors and can pick up balancing problems at high and low speeds. These are necessary for today’s high speed cars and of course give the car drivers a smooth ride, (that’s if your wheels are balanced of  course).

On a regular basis in my opinion is at least once a month. Most members of one of the independent tyre organisations ,such as Point-S will check your wheel alignment and wheel balancing for free and will only charge you if the car is out of alignment and requires adjusting.

Wheel Balancing is part of having a new tyre fitted

Today we balance your wheels as a matter of fact when you buy new tyres or have a puncture repaired. If you need a wheel balance just as a matter of fact and your steering wheel starts to shake at say 50 mph, then this is because you may have lost a balance weight or your tyre has become out of shape, due to perhaps a “slipped belt”, which can be caused by nail or screw damaging the steel belt in your tyre, putting the tyre out of shape and causing the wheel to be out of balance.
