Check your Winter Levels to shake winter off of your car
Richmond Times Dispatch
Some garages recommend a wheel alignment — which can cost around $80 — or a tyre rotation as part of your spring maintenance.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Wheel alignment and a tyre rotation is good advice ?

This is good advice from the Richmond Times Dispatch article. As winter ends and we are approached by the spring time it is good sound advice to have your steering wheel geometry carried out on your car.

  • This is because most car drivers will have driven over a pothole or speed bump that was covered in snow, and would have had the tracking knocked out by the slightest impact . Most cases you would not have known and your tyres will wear away at one edge or the other, causing premature wear and in some cases affecting your cars steering and the position of your steering wheel.
  • The cost here in Halifax in West Yorkshire UK is around £29.90 for the average saloon car and tyre rotation will only be at the £20 mark. it is also worth noting that wheel alignment goes under another name here in the UK, it is also known as “tracking”.
  • After checking your steering geometry, it is important that you check (or have checked for you) your engine coolant levels.. make sure that you have the correct level of anti-freeze for the upcoming winter weather. It is really  important that you check Check your Winter Levels such as the engine coolant level at regular intervals – weekly if possible – it’s an easy job to do. Your levels should not change and if you find that you are having to top the levels up, then it is possible that you may have a leak on the cooling system. The thing is, that you never know when bad weather will affect you and your car, so Check your Winter Levels.
  • If you have a leak then it is better that you find out about it at home rather that miles away whilst driving down a motorway. loss of fluid could mean that  engine will overheat causing your engine major problems, or at least blowing your cylinder head gasket. if you are not so sure about the amount of antifreeze to put in your cars radiator filler tank, then seek advice from your local garage or Unipart Car Care centre, if you live here in the UK.
  • Also make sure that you keep your window washer bottle topped up with de-icer screen wash, there is nothing worse that a frozen windscreen when driving along and your washer bottle and windscreen keeps freezing up, so that you cannot see a thing in front of you. The beginning of the 2014 winter has brought us the usual mixed bag of cold followed by mild air hitting the UK from the Atlantic.
  • We have have a mixture of conditions from warm days to freezing cold days with light snow. I am always amazed at the resilience of our drivers, who have once again beaten our expectations, by preparing their cars so  Check your Winter Levels for the winter ahead. The drivers using winter tyres has risen year after year and i put this down to “word of mouth”advice from motorists who have experienced the value of this product in snow and ice.

Wheel Alignment Explained Video

It is a proven fact that correct wheel alignment can help extend your tyres life. Regular, alignment checks helps you identify if your vehicle wheels are out of alignment. Therefore, it is not rocket science, to have your wheel alignment checked. Thus, at the same time as you have new tyres fitted. This video is a good example and explains what the alignment process includes.

Of course, many of our customers, do not know what the alignment procedure involves. Therefore this video, defines what common alignment is and adjusting the settings such as positive and negative camber and toe-in and toe-out.

The other complaint from our customers, involves their steering wheel. Accordingly, we may get a complaint, that their steering is pulling from left to right and visa-versa. This is often after we have fitted new tyre. Especially to the front of the vehicle.I must admit, that in busy periods, then we sometimes neglect to ask the customer to check their cars alignment.

With early snow fall. So this winter is especially busy with our customers buying winter tyres. I know that some will return with steering wheel problems. Time is always a problem in a very busy business. Unfortunately, we cant devote the time to every customer. As a result, we always advise the client to call us back if they have a problem and this has worked over the years.

We charge the driver £29.90 for a full front alignment. This is if the steering is not seized. Of course, this is a problem on the older cars. As a result, if the steering is too bad to adjust, we then re-quote for each individual job. As expected, we have to use heat equipment to release seized up parts and this costs extra money.I must stress though that most alignment jobs are straight forward and require no heating.

Pot-Holes Time Again- Driving over Pot-Holes Damage Your Wheels and Alignment

Pot-Holes Time Again; Eric Roberts explains the importance of wheel alignment on your car.

In the North England we experience many vehicle owners wanting (Wheel Alignment), the primary cause for this is Pot-Holes Time Again in the road and speed humps, this can change the automobile’s steering and suspension settings or smash critical parts such as tyres and steering components.

Pot-Holes Time Again

Pot-Holes Time Again

Potholes, reduce the cars safety and add expensive extra costs,  damaging the tyres prematurely, but by ensuring the wheels are correctly aligned,  and motorists can eliminate the effects of any pothole or speed bump injuries and make sure they stay as safe as possible.
The latest heavy rain will, without a doubt, add to some potholes. Furthermore, these holes cause the destruction. The holes are covered with slush and snow. These holes can cause many safety issues for motorists. Consequently, if a driver knows that they have hit a pothole they must get their wheel alignment checked out, most garages will give you a” free of charge” tracking test and you only pay for the job if the wheel alignment is out.
An added sign that your wheel alignment is out. Will be that your steering wheel is out of line. Often needing all the front wheel alignment readjusting and possibly will take an hour or two to do, you could have an add-on charge, so it may be sensible if you asked for an estimate of the cost.

Pot-Holes Time Again; A further thing you should look out for when having your wheel alignment checked is the possibility of rusted up steering parts.

Most auto centres have to use some form of heating equipment. Heating will free off seized up driving components; The job of heating will take more labour time. A further charge may by added. Once again an excellent auto centre will advise you of this. And give you the option of to have the job done or not, it will be your choice.

Road Potholes-Could Mean Wheel Alignment many more mechanical Problems

Road Potholes; wheel alignment reduces your “tyre wear.”

In the Calderdale district of North England, we experience a high incidence of vehicle owners needing Wheel Alignment. The main causes for this is driving over

Road Potholes

Road Potholes; This car hit a pothole and broke the spring

Holes in the road. This is because the local council are reluctant to carry out Repairs. This includes safety humps. This can change the car’s steering and suspension geometries. Potholes can also  break key parts such as suspension and steering components. This effect can reduce the vehicle’s safety or add expensive extra costs. The effect can also damage the cars structure permanently. But by ensuring the wheels are precisely aligned, will be avoided. Motorists can eliminate the effects of any pothole or speed bump injury and make sure they stay as safe as possible.

The latest bad frosts will, without the doubt, multiply the quantity of potholes that cause the destruction. Because mud and snow could hide the potholes. Then it can cause some serious safety issues for motorists. If a driver knows that they have hit a pothole they must get their  Wheel Alignment

Road Potholes

Road Potholes; This bent steering arm caused because a car went down a pothole

Most garages will give you a free of a charge tracking (alignment) check, and you will only pay for the job if the wheel alignment is out, and it needs adjusting(except for Four-Wheel Alignment).

Wheel alignment should be carried out at regular intervalsRoad Potholes

Furthermore, to sum up, have your wheel alignment was done at regular periods, especially if you think that you have hit a deep hole or run over a safety hump at speed. Continually have the wheel alignment corrected if you are having new tyres mounted on your wheels. Your tyre centre may ask you to come back afterwards. Then a few days motoring will not effect the wear on your tyres. Have your pressures and tyre wear checked methodically. If you have any doubt which tyres to buy, then go for a mid-range make, this will mean that you get good quality tyres, and the tyres will be at a better price than a leading make. Once again a good garage or tyre depot will be happy to help and check your tyres free of charge. Also your wheel alignment of course.
