Damaged Alloy Wheel- This damage could have spread and shattered the wheel very lucky Driver ?

This is probably the worse damaged Alloy wheel that I have ever seen

Last week I was sat in my small office ,just looking out of the window, when I noticed a breakdown truck with a blue car on the back. I never thought more a do about it as we have these broken down cars brought into us all of the time, as most busy auto centres do.

About ten minutes later a member of my staff came in shouting for me to have a look at this wheel..The Damaged Alloy Wheel had come off the car that was brought in on the back of a transporter, a Ford Focus with a sport conversion, up-rated brakes and over size Cheap Alloy Wheels, you know the thing I mean this was a young guys car and a bit sporty.

However the guy had been going at speed and hit a massive pot hole in the road. The impact had caused a massive blow out to both his offside (drivers side) alloy wheel and completely

Damaged Alloy Wheel;Pot-holes like this are the biggest danger to alloy wheels and tyres

wrecked the tyres and caused severe damage to the alloy wheels. We can have small damages repaired by a local alloy welding specialist. These are very often small cracks that appear on the rims and start to leak air from the wheel and tyre assembly. This is most common on some BMW models and some times we have known BMW replacing wheels free of charge. These small cracks can be repaired successfully, to the pleasure of many of our customers. It has been a bad time for broken and cracked alloy wheels recently due to the large increase of pot-holes on our roads, and so it is good to be able to give our customers the good news when they do not have to buy a new wheel, but we can have their damaged Refurbished Alloy Wheels repaired.

I had not seen alloy wheel so badly damaged ?

We were all amazed at the massive split in the Damaged Alloy Wheel that came off the front ,i have never seen one so bad, the split was almost all round the circumference of the wheel. I f you look at the picture you can see what I mean. Luckily for the customer we have just become a member of a buying group here in the UK called Point S and one of the suppliers we can deal with is TSW wheels Alloy Wheel and Tyre Packages. We were able to supply four new wheels along with two new General Tyres and the guy went on his way a happy driver.

Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles. We are members of Unipart Car Care centres and give a nationwide guarantee for all our work and parts. We also sell Hankook Tyres online from our website  by using the tyre selector and choosing your tyre size. We offer courtesy cars to local motorists who need to go to work and leave their car with us for work doing. We are also an official MOT testing station and are members of Motor-codes, who carry out checks for high standard of equipment and workmanship.

Cracked Alloy Wheels-Now becoming a big problem? Can You Repair Damaged Alloy Wheels ?

Post Updated 2nd Jan 2014

Cracked Alloy Wheels;Yes you can repair alloy wheels

Cracked Alloy Wheels; Here at Pellon tyres we are witnessing many of our customers who are having problems with Cracked Alloy Wheels. One of the things that I have invested in, in recent times are new tyre fitting machines that make the fitting of tyres to alloy wheels much easier , with less chances of damaging or scratching the wheels. In fact we had a customer in last Saturday for a new tyre fitting in a new Bentley with wheels worth over £600 each. We actually did a puncture for him and a perfect job to boot, (no scratches thank Goodness).

Cracked Alloy Wheels

For the past 6 or 7 years, car manufacturers have been replacing their standard steel wheels with larger alloy wheels to help them sell the new cars with “free added extras”. It is easy to see why alloy wheels have become so popular. Not only do they provide a better ride than steel wheels, but also they look much better and allow the manufacturers to make bigger and wider wheels to fit bigger and wider tyres. This trend has enabled manufacturers to give their new cars and SUVs, a better more attractive look. Another plus side is that alloy wheels are much lighter in weight than steel wheels and help in the quest for more fuel efficient greener cars.

Unfortunately, alloy wheels come with a down side,(although they are very strong they break easily with the weight of the heavy cars). While they do look great and run smoothly, they are also made of softer and less durable material than steel wheels. Some alloys also come in two or more parts as well, split wheels can make the problem worse. Alloys can be damaged easily, and replacement wheels can be very expensive, and in some cars you can not find a matching wheel and may have to buy 4 new wheels. Replacing  Cracked Alloy Wheels may be the safest but most expensive option to the problem, but why would you want to replace a wheel that is only slightly damaged, the bottom line is is that Cracked Alloy Wheels can be repaired, and a repair will always be the cheaper option other than a replacement wheel.

Many of our customers think that Cracked Alloy Wheels can simply be bent back into place with a hammer, but it isn’t that simple. Fortunately, we know a team of experts that are skilled at safely repairing a damaged wheel that will remove even unnoticeable cracks or other weak spots. The wheel is mounted on a special device, and heat, pressure and gentle vibrations are applied to the wheel making the alloy go back into place, without cracking. The wheel goes back to its original state once the repaired wheel cools. The wheel is then washed thoroughly, cleaning off all brake dust and dirty particles that may be trapped in the wheels minute cracks and crevices.

Can alloy wheels be welded ?

The simple answer is if the crack is not too big it can be welded by a specialist welder using special alloy welding equipment, it is something that we at Pellon tyres pass on to the experts. We do offer the service to our customers and most of them have the crack welded. We also offer a complete alloy wheels overhaul at a reasonable price, about half the price of buying new wheels and the effect is astounding in fact, they just look like new wheels when they are re-furbished.

Eric Roberts

Hi I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre and Battery business now for 40 years. I worked for a couple of national tyre companies before starting my first business. I now own a company here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre, and I am a keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business.

Wow what about those fantastic Red Wheels-Lamborghini’s show off their wonderful Red Wheels

In my opinion wheels are a very important feature of the cars design. A great set of wheels can set a car off.

We are catching onto this now with many start up companies going into the business of wheel renovation and the thing is that you can have any colour that you want, just like choosing paint colour for your lounge.

Red wheels, Green wheels any colour you want

When I first saw this image I was impressed by the wonderful car, but most of all the wheels and tyres are what caught my eye?

Here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax Yorkshire, we have been advocates of most cars having a smart set of wheels. Unfortunately not all our customers would agree with me. In recent years small businesses have set up to capture this growing niche market.

More and more drivers are realising how bad the wheels on their cars are looking. The main cause of the deterioration of their wheels is the salt that the local authority puts on the roads in the winter, when the cold weather and snow becomes a threat. The salt at attacks alloy wheels and corrodes them.

When the wheels leave the factory on the new cars they are treated with a special coating that protects them for a short while. Continuous use wear away at this coating and the salt attacks the alloy and coats them with a white powder, spoiling their looks.

Some makes of car are much worse than other, but all alloy wheels will eventually perish. This corroding also takes place on the inside of the wheel bead area where the tyre is seated.

Before and after alloy wheels refurbishment

This often causes the tyre to loose pressure, as the corrosion separates the tight fit of the tyres on the wheels.

Many of my customers call into my tyre depot thinking that they have a puncture, but the cause is a break in the seal between the tyre and the wheel due to breakdown of the alloy due to corrosion.

The good news is that your alloy wheels can now be refurbished.

Many of our customers now refurbish their alloy wheels. This is carried out by specialist companies that can turn round a set of wheels in about three days. What we do is jack the car up and take off all the wheels. The tyres are then stripped off and placed in storage. The wheels are then taken to the specialist to carry out the work of refurbishment.

This takes about three days. The wheels are then completely stripped of any coatings by sand blasting. They are then subjected to several coatings and finished with whatever finish or colour that the customer has selected. Most people have their wheels finished to match the original alloy colour. This is followed by a final coating of lacquer, which is all heat processed and baked in an oven at high temperature to harden the final finish.

Some of our younger customers choose to have the wheels finished in a bright colour to either match or contrast with the colour of their car. We have had some wonderful results and all
