Daewoo Matiz Engine management Light problem?

Daewoo Matiz Engine management Light problem?

Daewoo Matiz Engine Management Light problem?; Engine management light problems are a common feature of owning a busy Service centre, like the one here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax UK. I would not be lying if I said that we get two or three cars in a week for related engine management light problems.

I must say that it is one of those things that can scare our customers to death. They can drive their cars around with a bald tyre for months, but as soon as a warning light comes on, they are straight over to us for our opinion and possible corrective action.

Our latest light on problem came from a lady who had a Daewoo Matiz Engine Management Light problem? The woman said that she did not think that her car was running properly and was a bit sluggish. Also, a picture of an engine lit up on her dashboard.

As most customers do, (no matter what the car make or model), she panicked. Our customer  was waiting at the door ready for when we opened up the garage

doors. This problem can indeed be anything to do with the engine management system. From the expensive coil pack to a faulty fuel injector.

Alex, one of my mechanical staff, plugged our engine management machine into the car and read the fault codes. The code came up as a cylinder misfire, which tied up with the ladies statement of the car not running correctly and sluggishly.

Like many of our customers think, she thought she was going to need a new engine and was probably on “tender hooks” waiting for us to call her back with our assessment of the damage and the price. We checked most likely cause, the spark plugs. Indeed, the plugs were in a bad condition, and we suspected that this was the cause.

Everything else looked fine and so we fitted a new set of plugs. The car ran much better and so we reset the engine warning light, and road tested the car. Everything ended up right, and we informed the stressed lady customer, who was highly delighted with our low price repairs.

Car Brake Pads-Could be poisoning our rivers and lakes?

Car Brake Pads

Car Brake Pads-As a garage owner I often wonder what will be coming next. We are constantly being told that we are all breathing in too many particles of this and that, and yet, on the other hand, the experts are telling us that we are going to live to 100 years old.

It is not that long ago that you were lucky to get to 65. I can remember when I was a kid how dirty the river Calder was, in my local town. One thing is for sure, there were NO fish living in it. Now in 2016, we not only have a large population of fish but also many species of birds that we would never dream of seeing in the dirty river.

We too are breathing in much better air quality than when I was a kid. Then I suppose came the car. The car has undergone major surgery, since I first started to work on cars, in days gone by. I suppose if the truth is known, then much of the air pollution, is to do with car emissions.

We then had a savior? The diesel engine car. We were told that the new type of diesel engine cars was going to be the answer. Millions of drivers switched to diesel engines. Then came the asbestos scare. If we touched the stuff, then our hands would drop off. If we breathed the dust in then we would be afflicted with cancer.

 car brake pads

Copper-less Car Brake Pads

All the brake companies had to put their thinking caps on and come up with an asbestos free brake solution. The dust that came from the wearing out brakes was cancer genic. A million mechanics including myself have been breathing this stuff in for years.

A new type of brake pad and linings was invented, using asbestos-free materials. We thought that this would be the end of it? But no.

In California USA, they noticed that the fish that they caught were too saturated with copper that they were unfit to eat. The fish in the Bay area were not fit for human consumption. For years, they could not find a solution to the whereabouts of the pollution.

The problem was spotted by motor mechanics, who had heard about this and reported that they could see small particles of copper coming out of the brake pads as they wore away.

Car Brake Pads, have certainly had their problems. Throughout the history of the automobile, and it has caused yet another environmental problem. It is a fact

Car Brake Pads

worn-brake-pads-showing-metallic-pieces

that every time we break, tiny particles of dust come away from the brake pads. This is magnified a million time, because of the number of cars on the road.

This has resulted in the passing of new laws to stop brake manufacturers from adding copper to their otherwise secret brake pad ingredients. I wonder if this affects other parts of the world. The brake pads must have been made for the whole of America and not just California?

Alfa Romeo Exhaust Problem- Back-Box matched and fitted from Bosal Fiat Part?

Alfa Romeo Exhaust Problem

Alfa Romeo Exhaust Problem; There was a time when certain exhaust manufacturers would do a replacement exhaust system for every car model on the market. If the car makers made it, then companies such as Bosal would make a replacement.

In fact, come to think of it, Bosal actually made the exhausts that were fitted to many of the European cars that were produced. This means that an exact copy could be purchased when the exhaust system needed a replacement.

Last week we had a customer with an Alfa Romeo Exhaust Problem. The backbox was perished and needed replacing. We put the car in the air on one of our hoists and checked to see what needed replacing.

Over the years, we have learnt about many ways of repairing cars and this Alfa Romeo Exhaust Problem, would turn out to be one of them?

When we were checking our exhaust book to find a replacement we soon noticed that this Alfa Romeo Exhaust Problem, would not be covered in the replacementAlfa Romeo Exhaust Problem market. This usually means that the only route for us then is the main dealers.

As with all other parts the main dealers are very expensive, and exhaust parts are no exception. The original Alfa part was a one piece system from the catalytic converter back. The price from the Alfa garage was expensive, to say the least.

Alfa Romeo Exhaust Problem

Our other alternative was to match up a similar back-box as the old one and sleeve it to the centre-pipe exhaust. With the customers wallet in mind, we decided to go down this road.

We contacted our local exhaust wholesaler for advice. He said that we should look at other similar Italian car back-boxes because some models inter-changed. Sure enough, we found that a back-box from a Fiat model was almost exactly the same.

The only difference was that the exhaust diameters were the same. This was not a problem for us. All we do is to sleeve the two parts together and so that is whatAlfa Romeo Exhaust Problem we did.

The customer was highly delighted that we had put ourselves out for him and also saved him £100. The exhausts carry exactly the same warranty as the main dealer would have been.

Here at Pellon Auto Centre in Halifax, Yorkshire UK, we offer a full range of exhausts for all makes and models of cars, and will even put ourselves out to help you.

Nissan Navara Clutch replacement-Duel Mass Flywheel replaced.

Nissan Navara Clutch replacement

Nissan Navara Clutch replacement; One of the car problems that increase after the winter driving period, is a noticeable rise in the number of clutches that we fit. The other day was no exception. One of our first jobs that were booked in was a Nissan Navara Clutch replacement.

Clutches fall into two main categories. These are cars that are fitted with manual gearboxes and also automatic gearboxes. In the UK, the most popular type of gearbox, by far is the manual type of gearbox

Other types do exist, but they are mainly on the upmarket car models and motorsport cars.

As most of my readers probably know the clutch fits between the engine and the manual gearbox and this Nissan Navara Clutch replacement, was no different.

Nissan Navara Clutch replacement

Nissan Navara Clutch replacement

The clutch enables the driver to change gears, in response to the car engine speed. This enables a smooth transfer of power, from the engine to the gearbox.

The clutch plate is made from a similar material to your brake shoes and eventually, wear away. Like anything else it depends on how the driver treats the clutch, as to how long it will last. The guy with the Nissan Navara could feel the clutch slipping when the truck was fully loaded. He also had problems engaging his gears on occasions.

Nissan Navara Clutch replacement

He brought it into us here at Pellon Halifax UK, for us to check it out. Sure enough, the clutch was slipping and in need of a new one fitting.

The Nissan Navara Clutch replacement, meant us removing the gearbox away from the engine. The Navara is an inline unit, which means that the engine and gearbox are lined from front to rear, driving the rear wheels.

Alex was allocated the job and he soon started to remove the holding nuts and bolts. The Navara is a big vehicle, compared to the clutches that we normally fit and Alex had to use hydraulic engine stands to take the weight of the extremely heavy gearbox when it was removed.

When we checked out the parts, the computer informed us that this model could be fitted with a Duel mass Flywheel (DMF). These were invented to take out many of the stresses and vibrations that were associated with diesel engine cars. In my opinion, some vehicles do not need it. This has become more obvious to me, when certain clutch manufacturers, make an alternative solid “Blue-Print“clutch to replace the DMF.

We contacted the customer and explained to him about the DMF and the solid clutch. He phoned back and gave us permission to fit the solid clutch. This was fitted and the gearbox built back up. The Nissan Navara Clutch replacement was complete and the customer collected his car and away he went.

Engine Overheating Problems-Can cause permanent engine damage.

Engine Overheating Problems

Engine Overheating Problems-When driving home up the M1 motorway, here in the UK, I counted four cars that were pulled into the hard shoulder and were broken down. We all see this common event, but as a garage owner I often think about what may have caused the problem in the first place?

One of the cars had white steam coming out of a lifted bonnet (hood). This looked like a typical case of an overheated engine. The guy did the correct thing and pulled over. The car engine overheating can turn out to be a costly and dangerous thing, especially for your car engine. It could come to having a new engine.

If this happens to you there are one or two tips that I can give you. First, try to pull over in a safe place and turn your engine off. You would have been warned by

Engine Overheating Problems

your car’s instruments, either flashing on the dashboard or the temperature gauge hitting the roof.

The guy on the M1 , with the Engine Overheating Problems, did the right thing by lifting the bonnet to allow the engine to cool down quicker. A good tip is that if there is not a safe place to pull over, then turn the car heater to full. This acts as an extra radiator and helps cool down the engine. Even if it is a hot day, you must try to peek the engine as cool as possible.

Engine Overheating Problems

If your car is equipped with air-con, then turn the air-con OFF. The air-con produces more heat, and this is the last thing that you want.

At this stage, you would want to call for help? Another tip is NEVER to try to remove the radiator cap if your car has one when the engine is overheating. This happened to an apprentice mechanic that I worked with back in the day. The engine cooling system is under great pressure and when the lad removed the radiator cap, he was burned by steam and red hot coolant. He did recover but spent a couple of days in the local burns unit.

Most modern cars are now fitted with a plastic expansion tank. This tank is filled with a special water and coolant mix. The same applies to the expansion tank as to the radiator. You will get the same results as with a radiator cap. Some vehicles are fitted with a pressurized expansion tank. If you have one of these then there is a warning on the tank cap.

It may be that your car just needs some more water and coolant.

Engine Overheating Problems

You have access to a water supply then you could top the tank up. Therefore, if are confident enough to do this then make sure that you only use warm water, to mix the already boiling water in the engine. Finally, if you have no coolant available then it should be fine to use water only, until you can get the car to your local garage for a check over.

In my experience, the Engine Overheating Problems can occur when the car has had recent engine work carried out. Say a new head gasket or rubber hose fitted. The water system has had an air lock, and this can cause the engine to overheat. If this is the case then take the car back to your garage and ask them to bleed and check the water system, because of overheating. At Pellon, we find that it is always better to recheck the coolant levels after the car has had engine work carried out. The engine is run, keeping an eye on the temperature. We switch the engine off and recheck the levels after a good ten minutes. This will get rid of any trapped air that may cause later problems.

Although some drivers will think this article as pretty basic, many drivers will be thankful for the advice as they may have never come across such a problem. Thanks,  Eric Roberts.

Renault Window Control Module-Windows cause Renault owners problems-goes down but not up?

Renault Window Control Module problem at Pellon Autocentre Halifax UK

This is becoming a regular issue for some Renault, car owner. The problem starts with the windows rattling and vibrating. This usually happens when theRenault Window Control Module electric window switch is operated. The cause of the problem comes from two sources, either electrical or mechanical.
If you can hear the electric motor running and attempting to turn, then the problem is likely to be a mechanical problem. The other scenario is if you can hear just a click and nothing happens, i.e., the window going up or down, then it will be an electrical fault. We have had cases where the window, decides to operate on its own.

This is usually a short out and therefore is also an electrical problem.

Renault Window Control Module

The particular car that we have had in recently had a fault because the window just did not go up or down. When examining the problem we had to remove the door cover and check out the door. Common causes are broken plastic clips and damaged steel cables.Hence, the steel cables are often rusted with condensation and as we all know the rust eventually leads to damaged parts. In this case, the steel cable was damaged. In other cases, we have found that the problem has been water entering the six pin Renault Window Control Module. This is fitted to the electric window motor. It can also lead to communication difficulties with the cars computer system. This can be the problem with your vehicle windows going up and down on their accord. In the case of our car, it meant that

Renault Window Control Module

The Window Control Module was replaced. As a result, this was a relatively easy job. It is very important however to clean and grease all the moving parts after the Renault Window Control Module is fitted. We tested the window. Naturally, everything was working fine before the car was returned to the customer.

Car Battery Problems-Or could it be your Car Alternator that is blamed.

Car Battery Problems

Unfortunately, the two things are very closely linked. Many customers call in knowing that they have car battery problems. The number one sign is quite evident? The car will not start. This is mainly in the cold weather of wintertime.

It can also become a problem in hot summer weather when the air conditioning is working at full pelt. This problem, can show up a failing battery and give the owner what

Car Battery Problems

Typical modern alternator

he thinks are car battery problems.

I must confess that the first thing we do is to test the battery and the alternator with the same piece of equipment. This usually fails the car battery, and we then fit a new one. Nine times out of ten, this will do the trick. However, a faulty alternator could make the original problem re-occur.

When we talk about car battery problems, we need to understand a little about, what the alternator does? The primary task is to keep the battery charge topped up at the correct level. This is when the driver is using a significant amount of electrics in the cars cab.

In winter time it will be the car lights and the heater system that takes much of the power from the battery and making the alternator work hard, replacing the charge back into the battery. This could also be a clue to the driver that the car is about to have some car battery problems.

Car Battery Problems

One of the first signs is that your cars lights may appear to be shining dimmer. This is usually an alternator problem. Too much or too little power back to your battery will make your lights dimmer.

This was more common on the older type, what I call “dynamo” alternators. Lights dimming were one of the first signs that the dynamo bushes, (that created the electricity to charge up the battery) were wearing down and therefore not doing the job correctly. When the alternator was not passing enough charge, then the light would dim, or the heater would work slowly and make a distinctly different noise to what it should make.

A good point about the older type of alternator is that it could be repaired, by fitting a new set of bushes. Older mechanics would remember this well. It was a job usually given to the junior member of the garage staff.

When the earlier alternators failed then, the first thing to happen would be that the driver would start to have car battery problems. What they did was to boil theCar Battery Problems battery almost dry, and the battery needed replacing. In many cases, the alternator would fail completely and would have to be repaired along with fitting a new car battery.

Car Battery Problems

The more modern car alternator is much more complicated. They are indeed connected to the entire cars electrical system via the cars ECU (on-board computer). The modern alternator works similar to a smart charger, applying a constant charge replacement to the battery in a more efficient manner than the old type dynamo charger.

This type of alternator usually fails because of a faulty circuit board and will fail at once. These alternators are repaired by specialist companies, and we buy them as we need them as exchange units.

One thing that we have learned about batteries and alternators is that when a battery goes, we here at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax UK, always check the cars alternator when we fit a new battery. This gives us a piece of mind that the new battery won’t be damaged by a faulty alternator in a few weeks’ time.

Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises-for distressed lady customer with her Zara problem?

When we received a phone call from a distressed lady customer, She had a Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises? We had an idea of what it could be?

She explained a bad knocking noise is coming from the rear of the car, and she was frightened to drive it.Hence, the car was a Citroen Zara with rear knocking sounds.

Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises

So we towed the car back to the garage at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax Yorkshire, UK.

Therefore, we knew what the Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises. Was probably going to be. Thus it would not be a cheap job. A common fault on Peugeot and Citroen vehicles is the collapse of the rear radius arm bearings, and this problem can cause the bad knocking noises that the lady customer could hear.

Sure enough, the cat arrived at the garage, and we proceeded to lift the car up on one of our lifts far a thorough rear end examination that had caused the Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises. Sure enough, the diagnoses confirmed the failure of the rear radius arm bearings, causing the cars problems.

Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises

This issue can cause severe camber lean, causing the wheels and tyres to rub on the body of the car. It can also cause a failure to the rear torsion bar, which can snap off completely?

In the past, we at Pellon Autocentre have developed several solutions to confront this collapsed bearings problem.

Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises

The bearings can be changed. This involves many hours of labour and struggle.

There are companies now that specialise in refurbishing these bearings, by building and selling a rear axle complete axle. All we have to do is strip off the parts that are not affected, such as the brakes. We obviously replace any brakes that are worn out, before building them back up again.

We think that the exchange refurbished axle is the best option. If you get a Citroen Zara with rear knocking noises, then you should consider this option. The entire shaft should last out the life of the car, and all your rear brakes will be refurbished at the same time. This should give the customer peace of mind.

Our lady customer went for this option, and the job was finished in the same day.

Car repairs Halifax-Certainly a Busy period for servicing after the Christmas holidays.

Car repairs Halifax

The week after Christmas is always a busy time for the auto trade. This is no exception for the team at Pellon Autocentre here in Halifax.car repairs

Car repairs have always been on the increase after the holiday period. This year has been no different. We were inundated with small mechanical jobs, from minor breakdowns. These also include brake jobs and work resulting

astra brake jobfrom MOT failures.

One job was a Vauxhall Astra with brake grinding problem. This is becoming standard, as drivers fail to have their cars regularly serviced. We removed the wheels, and when we inspected the brakes, we found that the front brake callipers had seized, due to lack of maintenance.

This had worn out one of the pads on each side of the cars front braking system. One of the pads was hardly worn, and the other pad that was doing all the work had worn down to the metal. This caused the brakes to make a grinding noise when the brakes were applied by the driver.

In this case, the callipers were freed off without replacement.Naturally, new discs and pads were fitted by Our MOT tester Dale Linton. The car was road tested and back to its full braking power.

Car repairs Halifax

The second problem with the Car repairs was a more unusual job.Unfortunately, it was a broken clutch pedal on a Vauxhall Combi van. The bolts that hold the clutch pedal in place are hidden away.As a result, behind some other parts in the car’s engine compartment. Some car repairs are bread and butter jobs, but jobs like this can be a nightmare. They are fiddly with no room to manoeuvre and are hated by mechanics, including in this case our service manager Ryan Linton. Ryan usually ends up with these kinds of jobs, and he hated it.

The Combi van clutch pedal was eventually fitted and working. Ryan went off to carry out a MOT on magnificent MGB GT. This car is one of the best car repairsexamples of a classic car that we have ever seen. Naturally, I thought it a good idea to put some images onto this post. Although car repairsthe car passed with flying colours. Therefore, did not need any work carrying out.

Finally, these are just a few car repairs that a busy garage will carry out on any day and is what makes the job so interesting.

Car Fluid Levels-Must Get Checked-Before That Important Car Journey ?

CAR FLUID LEVELS

Just after the Christmas holidays, car fluid levels are the last thing on your mind?what is though is, own I know because I will be one of them. Sometimes you may want to visit a long lost relation, or even travel along way to see one of your married children who lives in a distant country.

No doubt that, when your mind is made up, and the plans start. Will the excitement begin to build up amongst the whole family?CAR FLUID LEVELS

One thing you must not forget is to ensure that your car is in tip-top condition and capable of that long road trip? I should not have to keep reminding drivers about this, but unfortunately, I have to keep on writing my blogs, to explain how important this is to your car and safety.

You should be in no doubt how important checking your car fluid levels is, so here are five essential fluids to check before you head out on your important holiday road trip.

Car Fluid Levels

  1. Your car Engine Oil

All your fluid levels are critical, but I think the engine oil is paramount indeed. If the vehicle is low on oil, then your engine could blow up costing thousands of pounds to replace. You will probably know where your oil dipstick is? So take it out and wipe it clean with a cloth. Put the dipstick back in the hole and pull it out again. You should be able to see the car fluid levels minimum mark and the maximum mark on the dipstick. Some vehicles have poorly marked dipsticks, so make sure that you are familiar with the markings on yours.

If the reading is good then is nothing to do. If you need oil, then top the engine up a little at a time from a can of the same oil as the car has in the engine. It is always a safe bet to keep a small can of the same oil as your engines. If you are going on a long trip, you should check your engine oil a few times on your journey, both there and back. Most modern cars have a car fluid levels oil warning light on the dash, but you do not want this to come on. It can cause stress and doubt in your mind as to if the engine is alright or not.

Car Fluid Levels

  1. Brake fluid

On a long journey, you will use your brakes.Hence, millions of times. Having the correct amount of brake fluid in is imperative to good brakes and the ability to stop your car in an emergency. Low brake fluid is unusual, but I have seen it on several occasions, where a car has had brake failure due to a low brake fluid level. The brake fluid master cylinder is located under the bonnet (hood) of the car and ‘s hard to miss. However a word of warning? Some braking systems are different and require different types of fluids? Make sure you know the right kind of your vehicle. Ask your local garage if you are not sure or check out your local Unipart Car care centre. In Halifax, it is Pellon Autocentre Ltd.

  1. Coolant

Coolant affects the cars ability to heat up and cool down. It is important that the car has the correct level of additives added to the water tank, which is once again located under your bonnet. The number of additives to add are determined by a simple tester. This can be bought from a motorist’s store, or once again you can have a check done at your local UCCC garage. It is another one of your car fluid levels that is important. If you get it wrong, then your engine could overheat or freeze?

Car Fluid Levels

Most cars have a large fluid bottle, but some older cars may require filling through the radiator, by removing the radiator cap and then topping the level up.  The top up the tank is connected to the radiator and has a minimum and a maximum setting the same as the brake top up the reservoir. This tank helps balance out the level of water in the engine by releasing the pressure from the radiator into the overflow reservoir. When you check the level make sure the engine is not hot or scalding from hot water could occur.

Consequently, the ones that I have written about are crucial in my point of view. Therefore, if you are mechanically minded. Then there are a couple of other things that you could check. Hence, in the UK automatic cars are relatively rare. So, you could forget about the transmission fluid. America is a different kettle of fish. Where most cars come with automatic transmission. If so then this requires checking. Another level that I think is a step too far is the Power steering reservoir levels. This seldom needs any checking. If the power steering has any leaks on the system. Then you would soon know by the oil marks where you park your car. This is also picked up on your UK annual  MOT test.

In general maintaining, your car is getting more and more difficult. I would highly recommend that you have a regular service carried out on your vehicle especially before a long road trip.
