MOT Test for White E-Type Jaguar-Many boyhood dreams about owning this car presented for MOT Test

MOT Test for White E-Type Jaguar

MOT Test for White E-Type Jaguar

MOT Test for White E-Type Jaguar

of course, it was a sad day when the Government in all their wisdom announced that Most vehicles manufactured or first registered over 40 years ago. Hence, will, as of 20 May 2018, be exempt from periodic testing unless they have been substantially changed.

This “substantially changed “part worried some owners at first. many of these cars have had some major changes. if parts were not available, then they were re-fabricated by specialist companies.

However owners fears were quashed

when it was announced that their would have to be substantial changes to the chassis, running gear and engine capacity before the car was considered as re-built in any way. Especially in the past 30 years of ownership.

According to the UK Government web site then the following changes would be fine- The following are considered acceptable (not substantial) changes if they fall into
these specific categories:
• changes that are made to preserve a vehicle, which in all cases must be when
original type parts are no longer reasonably available;
• changes of a type, that can be demonstrated to have been made when
vehicles of the type were in production or in general use (within ten years of
the end of production);
• in respect of axles and running gear changes made to improve efficiency,
safety or environmental performance;
• in respect of vehicles that have been commercial vehicles, changes which can
be demonstrated were being made when they were used commercially.

Of course this clarified the worries and concerns from the owners of these cars. meanwhile, as it happens we still get these vintage and classic cars presented for the Annual MOT Test. The E-Type Jaguar in my images is a great example. This car was the car that every teenager wanted back in the day. I was twenty years old when this car came out and boy did we want one. MOT Test for White E-Type Jaguar

I believe that many of these cars have to be MOT tested for insurance purposes. Consequently to make sure that the car was road worthy or not. Anyhow the white E-Type had many admirers from my other customers on that day. Including myself?

Annual MOT Testing-Two Old Timers-Call Into Pellon Auto Centre For their Annual MOT Test

Two Old Timers Call In For Annual MOT Testing.

As I have said before, that this is a great time to be involved in the auto trade. As the owner of a successful auto centre, we take every day as it comes. Take yesterday this time last year(19thFeb 2014) for

Annual MOT Testing

instance. Apart from the work that we have booked in for that day, we had a run of cars that were all affected by “pothole” damage.

The first car was a Ford Fiesta that suffered from a broken coil spring, the second was a Vauxhall Corsa, with a broken coil spring that had also penetrated the front tyre, and the third was a VW Sirocco that hit a pothole and bent his steering arm. We fitted the cars in between the car services that were already booked in and the customers went home at the end of the day, “happy bunnies”.

After lunch, we had another bit of excitement for me. Unbeknownst to me, we had two old cars booked in for their Annual MOT Testing. The first car was a regular for us, it was a Rolls Royce tourer, 5.6-litre engine and built in 1936. The car passed the test, apart from a Brake switch light, which we repaired on site. The company who own the vehicle always give their car a pre-mot test before it is brought into us but the brake light switch must have been overlooked.

The second car that turned up was a black A35 Austin saloon, that was made in 1958 (I was ten years old then). The car was owned by the great, great Aunt of the woman who now owns the car. The Aunt passed the car onto her niece who later died, and the car was then passed onto her niece, who is the current owner. The car was last serviced in 1990 and had only done 2000 miles, (it was then used to tootle around town in). The car has a 948 cc engine

Annual MOT Testing

with drums on the front brakes a rod braking at the rear.

The car was then mothballed for the last ten in a barn, and the latest in a line of nieces decided to bring it out. She asked for the service of a local mechanic, who looked at the car to assess its condition. The car only required a new battery and started up the first time. The brakes needed some work doing and then he handed the car over to us for its mot test. The brakes were sorted from an old MG Midget, but the engine was in immaculate condition and had only done 6000 miles.

Passed mot test with flying colours

The old Austin had a new 063 Lucas battery fitted and passed the mot test in tip top condition apart from some very slight corrosion and will see driving up and down the street of Halifax here in West Yorkshire UK this summer. I just love these cars with a bit of history and a story behind them. The A35 was also fitted with cross ply tyres to the front and radials to the back.

MOT Testing Horror

KIA Sedona- a bad Case of Rust -MOT Test Failure

KIA Sedona- a bad Case of Rust -MOT Test Failure

Modern cars these days rarely have major rust problems. Gong back a few years I remember some models of cars that were always rusting badly and rotting.

KIA Sedona,mot test

Tester Ryan Linton could get his hand into the sills of this KIA Sedona

From Italy came the Fiat Strada and the Fiat X1.9. Also some of the Lancias were rust buckets. France also sent us some rusty cars. I remember one of the first Renault Dauphins that dropped to bits when it had a slight bump. Hence, due to rust and later the Renault 12. France also gave us the early Citroen CV2s, pre 1970 models could be very bad. But they were improved after 1970.

Some of the British made cars were the Triumphs and the MGs. Of course, any of which could develop  rust problems after a couple of years. Oh, and not forgetting the Minis. Mini owners could buy a complete front end replacement that just bolted on after most of the front end had rotted and not forgetting the Mini boots of course were always swilling with water and rotting away sometimes nearly losing the battery which was kept in the boot?

KIA Sedona

German cars neither did nor fair too badly. So, I can remember rust problems with the VW Beetles, some required complete floor panels and engine mountings would rust, making the engine unsafe. Also the older members of the garage trade will remember the rusty Hillmans including the Hillman Imps, there competition to the Minis.

The list goes on and on but over the years the car manufacturers have developed modern methods of rust proofing their car products, so it was a surprise to me to about the problems that Kia were having with some of their models, including the Sedona. When a Kia  Sedona was presented to my garage for an MOT test the other day, we did not expect it to fail on rotten sills and badly corroded brake pipes. I decided to do a little research and found that the Kia’s rust problem was quit common, this surprised me because apparently some cars are fine and don’t rust but some do, this reminded me of the don’t buy a car that was made on Friday because car workers would take short cuts to get home on time.

Kia Sedona Failed the MOT test

However this particular Kia  Sedona failed the test on the holes in the sills and badly Corroded Brake Pipes, the engine was also smoky but we could cure that with diesel cleaner. The car was repaired by Ryan and was re-tested and passed.

Range Rover Sport and Some Other Nice Cars for the MOT TEST.

Range Rover Sport

Ryan fitting the new discs and pads to the red BMW Mini

I love taking some pictures and writing small articles.Especailly, about the cars that we have had presented to us. Hence, for different work to be carried out. So, it also pleases me that our customers trust us to look after their cars.Naturally, whilst they are in our care. Subsequently, this week for instance we have had a really diverse mix of cars. From an Aston Martin to a Reliant Robin that came in for a new battery fitting.

Another smart looking car was a very nice Range Rover Sport, a 2007 model. Turning  up for an MOT test and a service. I must admit that I didn’t like these cars a first. Of course, some of the later models are excellent cars. This particular car had a problem with a diesel leak. Which we found out to be a leak coming through one of the near side injectors.

Ryan Linton my chief mechanic fixed the car by fitting a new injector seal, this was an option that we had rather than fit a complete injector this also saved the customer a few pounds in repair fees.

The Range rover had a set of 22 inch tyres and wheels fitted, and the tyres were wearing away at the edges, but Ryan issued an advisory notice for this and did not fail the car. After the car was serviced and washed the car was collected by another happy customer.

Next job for an MOT test a smart red BMW Mini

I must admit that I prefer the old BLMC Minis to the new BMW Minis but some of the colour schemes on the BMW Minis are just special. The car that we had in for an MOT test was in my favourite colour red. The car was really eye catching and I could not resist taking a picture.

Range Rover Sport

Range Rover Sport in for a service and an MOT test

The Mini was the next test after the Range Rover and failed the test on the brake tester. The customer gave us permission to do the brake work and after removing the wheels we found that the car required discs and pads at the front and pads to the rear. We are a Unipart Car Care Centre and so we fitted genuine Unipart discs and pads.

Ryan finished the job and the BMW Mini went on its way with another very happy customer.

When you run an MOT test centre, we see all sorts of things on the cars that we test. In general motorists a re very good and the majority look after their cars. We do however the opposite end of the scale and are presented with cars that are dropping to bits. The majority of cars fail on silly little things, such as light bulbs that do not work. These include Headlights, indicators, brake lights, any damaged reflectors and your headlamp aim, they are all easy to check out if you need more information about you MOT test you can check on the VOSA web-site the governing body that oversees the MOT test system here in the UK.WE at Pellon MOT centre here in Halifax UK, recommend that the car owner should check his car over before presenting it to an MOT station for testing.

If you are the owner of a French car you are likely to have a first time fail. Citroen, Peugeot, and Renault were all in the bottom five brands for first time cars being tested for the first time. The worse French car to fail the test was the Renault Megane. Only 71% of these cars that were registered in 2008 actually passed their first MOT test, what does that say?

Megane turns up for MOT test

This brings me on to a little story that happened today Monday  23rd 2013 We had a Renault Megane booked in for an MOT test. The Renault Megane turned up and Ryan Linton, our tester proceeded to carry out the test. When it came to checking for corrosion he found a well rotted rusty sill that he could nearly fit his fist through. He also found that the front discs brakes were rotten with rust.  A few other things were failures, some light bulbs were gone and the catalytic convertor was in need of replacing. Altogether a very expensive MOT test.

MOT Test Combined with Car Servicing | FindGarage.Co.Uk

Unlike an MOT test, servicing is not a legal requirement for your vehicle. However, you will probably find that regular servicing can help to keep everything.

eric roberts‘s insight:

We all must be responsible for our cars servicing and MOT test

Sometimes I find it a great shame that we in the motor trade have to keep harping on about car menu servicing your cars. One of the biggest spoilers in recent times has been the recession. Car drivers just haven’t had any spare cash to spend on the vehicle. We have all seen people just putting £10’s worth of fuel into their cars at the filling station?

In my opinion I think that these people should have some kind of a budget and save to have their vehicle serviced when it goes in for its annual MOT test. Incidentally it is estimated that 4.7 million miss their mot testing date. I am sure that drivers either just flaunt the law or are not aware that driving your

mot test

car without a valid MOT test certificate is an offense reference section 47 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act.

More reading… http://www.mybrief.com/drivingoffences.asp?type=29&p=No%20M.O.T

Also driving without an MOT test will make your insurance invalid and you may receive a fine of up to £1000. Is it really worth it, when you can have an MOT test and a service for most average family saloons for around £150? If you are not sure where you can go for your vehicle serviced you should go online and look for your nearest Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC), they will offer you excellent service at a fair price.

Once you have had your MOT test and service you should be safer for another year, although I recommend that you have an engine oil and filter change in between the tests to be on the safe side. Also do not forget check your levels at regular periods, say once a week and top them up when required.

Here we are now at the back end of 2014, nearing Christmas time and the price of fuel has plummeted. The only problem is that the price of oil and petrol is not following as fast. The experts say that it may take a little longer for this to take place, but i was just wondering if services on cars wold be also coming down. I am not so sure , but i suspect so.

We are situated here in the foothills of the Pennine hills, a sort of old market town that was influenced in the early years by textile and carpet manufacturers. The town has not many claims to fame, but has a fabulous historic building known as Piece Hall, where all the wool and textile traders used to meet and sell and buy wool and other textile materials.

The town is also well known for the early gallows situated in Gibbet Street, where criminals were hanged for such things as sheep steeling . We do have a few tourist visit us, usually as an add  to the more attractive near by Howarth, the home of the Bronte Sisters.

This is where we are likely to see foreign visitors driving about in the beautiful hilly landscape of the Yorkshire Pennines. This is a very popular area for visitors from Holland, Italy  and Germany, who usually travel from the near continent by car. We also have many visitors from the Far-East and the USA, but they fly here and tour by coach.

Occasionally we have had car drivers that live in France and Spain calling in with their French and Spanish Car, and now we are getting Polish and Bulgarian cars calling in for tyres and punctures, but we have never carried out an MOT test.

That was until today. A young lady called into the garage with her Spanish registered Nissan Micra. We later found out that she was on some sort of a teacher exchange scheme and was teaching in a local school.  The Spanish Car was in England when the two year Spanish MOT had ran out. Spain has to have an MOT test every two years( and not one as in the UK).

Nissan Micra fails MOT test.

The Spanish Car failed the test on a couple of obvious things the headlamps were out of line, pointing to the wrong side as in Spain, the Spanish Car did not have a fog light on the offside as required in the UK. A track rod end and the car needed three new tyres. Nothing much wrong really a couple of hours work.

The lady went back to Spain after her spell teaching at a local school here in Halifax Yorkshire,UK.

MOT Test Safer Roads-The annual MOT Test make our roads a safer place to drive on.

MOT Test Safer Roads

 MOT Test Safer Roads

MOT Test Safer Roads

Some motorists may think that the ministry of transport (VOSA) are in a money making  racket. Because you have to take your car to be MOT tested every year to pass a roadworthy test. But they do not see that having those MOT tests, . Actually help prevent accidents and cut down on road deaths by keeping badly maintained vehicles off the road.

By carrying out an MOT test every year on vehicles that have been on the road for three years from their first registration, VOSA has successfully managed to lower the number of unsatisfactory cars on the road, making things safe for the rest of us.

MOT Test Safer Roads

MOT Test makes Safer Roads

So if you have had your car for at least three years then you need to find your nearest MOT test  station and have your car MOT tested. The easiest way is to book online, you can search for MOT Halifax if you need to find your nearest testing station if you live in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.

MOT Test Safer Roads-Any testing station?

It is possible to take it to any testing station to have it tested there.Consequently, you can be on your way home soon after you get a test completed. The only thing you need to know. Hence, is that they are a fully accredited testing station. Able to carry out a thorough and legal test. It is also important that they don’t let you get away with small mechanical faults. Of course that would affect  the road worthiness of your vehicle.

After all, this will defeat the whole purpose. Thus, of having the tests carried out in the first place. You want to make sure that your vehicle gets through the test as smooth as possible. As a result, there are many checks that need to be performed. During the MOT Test , your car has to meet the standard. So, for ,these checks. Consequently, you will be ready to go home in no time with a pass. The bodywork on your car needs to be in good condition. Therefore, no rusting or rotten holes. The fuel system, emissions tests and exhaust system. All needs to be good working order without any excessive CO2 than is required.

MOT Test Safer Roads-Your car could fly past the MOT test

Seat belts and seats must not be rotted and be able to keep you secured. Your brakes must still have enough pads left in them before the next brake check, and your tyres need enough tread to make sure you have the minimum legal requirements. . Make sure your lights and indicators are in good working order and your wipers must be in good condition to ensure they clear the windscreen when it is raining and the rubber blades are in good shape. Your steering and suspension need to be within regulation standards to make sure you are able to control the movement of the vehicle no loose worn parts. Your registration, plates and Vehicle identification need to be in good order as well. So look after your car and it should fly through the MOT Test Safer Roads.

MOT Test Fee-How “LOW” can “MOT TEST FEES GET” ?

mot test fee

Popular MOT Test sign seen throughout the UK

We have all seen the cheap “In recent times the price of an MOT Test Fee has dropped to enable garages to attract the cash strapped motorists. All sorts of deals have been advertised, even “FREE”, testing that is allowed under the DVLA MOT Rules” signs outside garages.

As the owner of an MOT test centre in Halifax, I am amazed at the number of garages giving away . The official mot test fee should be £54.85 (no vat), as stated on the www.gov.uk web-site.

This MOT Test Fee is only a recommended charge to be used by garages, based on the time and equipment that it should take to carry out the mot test according to VOSA the Government test agency here in the UK.

The Government totally regulate our testing stations, including visits by inspectors and also make sure that we have the correct equipment and that all our paperwork is in order, we have regular updates for testing procedures such as any mechanical updates or different specifications that may have to changed during a test. Our testers are also checked by the ministry guys, to make sure that they are carrying out the correct testing procedures. We have to provide a suitable reception and viewing room for the customers, and also use VOSA’s own computer system to register the test results and store all the other information about my garage and the cars that are entered into the system.

In other words in my opinion we are controlled by the Government, to ensure that the testing procedure is carried out correctly and within the law. If we stray form the correct procedures we are subject to all sorts of penalties, which would ultimately result in the closure of your MOT station. I am not moaning about all this, to the contrary. I think that the system is a very good system and is the envy of many countries, it is not perfect but then again nothing is in the World of garages.

The average hourly rate that we charge for mechanical work in the independent garage sector is said to be around the £40 per hour mark and in my opinion is a very fair price to charge. The Government maintain that because we here in the UK use the private sector to test cars that the MOT Test Fee is only a recommended fee and garages should charge what they want, the problem is that when they visit, they ask you what you charge in your garage and don’t seam to like it if you charge too small  MOT Test Fee,(that’s the impression that I get). But surly they are the ones that think the pricing should be controlled by the private sector.

mot test prices have dropped “big style”

In recent times the price of an MOT Test Fee has dropped to enable garages to attract the cash strapped motorists. All sorts of deals have been advertised, even “FREE”, testing that is allowed under the DVLA MOT Rules, has been seen up and down the country. This obviously a move to attract the motorist into you garage in hope that you may get some mechanical work from a test failure, nothing wrong with that,”you may say”. The problem is that we have all huge investments in these mot test stations and the price we are getting is far lower than the investment in staff and machinery. I understand that we all have to the good with the bad, but I now feel that it is time that the Government stepped in. They could do two things in my opinion. They could have a minimum priced paid for a test, based on the average hourly rate, say perhaps £40, or make the £54.85 in to a mandatory MOT Test Fee to all motorists, and not just a recommendation.

It will be interesting for some feedback from other garage owners with mot test stations here in the UK.

The Calder valley is a part of West Yorkshire in the UK. It has long traditions of farming and trading in the Woolen industry. Stretching back for centuries. The terrain is of rolling hills synonymous with its location in the south of the Yorkshire Pennines.  This July we will be honoured to host the Tour De France cycling race in the Calder valley.

It stretches from Halifax to the East to Todmorden in the West. The main road that connects the small towns on the route run along the river Calder, hence the nickname of the Calder valley. The main traditional trades were sheep farming and a thriving garage business sprung up primarily to repair farm machinery and the tractor belonging to the farmers.

Over the years, these family-owned garage businesses kept up with the times by starting to repair the emerging motor car trade, and a thriving garage business sprung up in all the small towns along the Calder valley. Old established garages such as Ports garage near Todmorden and Star garage in Hebden bridge, to name but a few.

MOT Testing Halifax Yorkshire UK

These small wool towns became very popular with modern day tourists and soon the area became very popular for people to move here and live. The whole thing started in the 1960s when a large “hippy” movement began the build up in the Hebden Bridge area and a large population of immigrants moved to Halifax to work in the mills. All this increase in the population meant that the service industries also started to grow. This included garages and many of these garages sprung up all over the area. With the advent of the faster, cars became the DVLA MOT Rules  Testing system that we now have across the whole of the UK.

Now you could get MOT Testing in many small towns.

Many of these garages took up the challenge and MOT Testing Halifax Yorkshire UK and testing became popular amongst many of the garage owners. MOT testing garage signs became a common site and you could leave your car for a Test in Hebden Bridge also, you could have a test carried out in Sowerby Bridge and indeed you could get your car tested in Elland. Many of these small towns were geared up with the correct equipment to carry out MOT TESTING.
