Rolls Royce MOT

Rolls Royce MOT

This magnificent Rolls Royce Wraith  car a 1939 drop head coupe is one of only 220 in the World and was designed by a James Young and Company of Bromley London Later bought by Jack Barclay a London based Rolls Royce dealer. This magnificent car was brought into my garage for an Rolls Royce MOT. We were very pleased to see such a fine specimen of a vintage Bentley Wraith model. Although the new DVLA MOT Rules state that these cars do not have to have a Rolls Royce MOT any more, most owners still go through the procedure because of insurance purposes.

It was in 1931 that the then “Rolls-Royce company” bought out ” Bentley Motors” and the whole works were moved from the Bentley factory in Cricklewood London NW2 to Derby, in the North midlands of the UK.

Bentley cars that were produced there are were commonly referred to as the “Derby-Bentley s”. These cars were first introduced in 1933 and the first of these Bentley s that were made in Derby was simply known as the 3 1/2 Litre  and were very similar in design and looks to the Rolls Royce 20/25 that was made in the same year. The Bentley cars very soon became the more powerful and sporty versions of the  Rolls Royce. These 3.5 litre engined Bentley’s that was produced in Derby was not in the same technology class as the ones produced in Cricklewood, London.

In 1936 the Derby made Bentley’s and the new Rolls Royce were fitted with 4.257 litre engine with a four speed gearbox.

this vastly improved the cars performance giving the owner far more acceleration power and making the car feel very sporty to drive. These cars were made until the beginning of World war 2

Production lasted until the outbreak of World War II, with over 1200 examples produced many of these cars are still running today, like the fine example that was presented to us here in Halifax UK. MOT Testing Halifax Yorkshire UK-Also Including The Calder Valley to Elland

MOT Testing Halifax Yorkshire UK

The Calder valley is a part of West Yorkshire in the UK. It has long traditions of farming and trading in the Woollen industry, stretching back for centuries. The terrain is of rolling hills synonymous with its location in the south of the Yorkshire Pennines.  This July we will be honoured to host the Tour De France cycling race in the Calder valley.

It stretches from Halifax to the East to Todmorden in the West. The main road that connects the small towns on the route run along the river Calder, hence the nickname of the Calder valley. The main traditional trades were sheep farming and a thriving garage business sprung up primarily to repair farm machinery and the tractor belonging to the farmers.

Over the years, these family-owned garage businesses kept up with the times by starting to repair the emerging motor car trade, and a thriving garage business sprung up in all the small towns along the Calder valley. Old established garages such as Ports garage near Todmorden and Star garage in Hebden bridge, to name but a few.

These small wool towns became very popular with modern day tourists and soon the area became very popular for people to move here and live. The whole thing started in the 1960s when a large “hippy” movement began the build up in the Hebden Bridge area and a large population of immigrants moved to Halifax to work in the mills. All this increase in the population meant that the service industries also started to grow. This included garages and many of these garages sprung up all over the area. With the advent of the faster, cars became the DVLA MOT Rules  Testing system that we now have across the whole of the UK.

Now you could get MOT Testing in many small towns.

mot testing in the Calder valley

Many of these garages took up the challenge and MOT Testing Halifax Yorkshire UK and testing became popular amongst many of the garage owners. MOT testing garage signs became a common site and you could leave your car for a Test in Hebden Bridge also, you could have a test carried out in Sowerby Bridge and indeed you could get you car tested in Elland. Many of these small towns were geared up with the correct equipment to carry out MOT TESTING.

Vintage Jaguar Mk2 2-4 waiting for the MOT Test.

This beautiful Vintage Jaguar Mk2 2-4. Hence, takes me back to an old manager of mine. Back in my days as a tyre salesman. I noticed it waiting for a MOT test. For this reason, thought I would try to find something interesting. Hence, about these wonderful cars.

This car is a classic early 1960,s MKII silver Jaguar. The best I could come up was with the TV Inspector Morse. If you can remember. Inspector Morse had a superb Burgundy coloured Vintage Jaguar Mk2 2-4. Ours is a silver one.

This car was introduced in October 1959. When I was just 11 years old. It was known as “a compact four-door saloon”.Accordingly, was sold brand new for £1,534. It was the car that typified the Jaguar look. Hence, a real stunner. There were around 25,000 made. For this reason, and the 2.4 was fitted with a 2483 cc giving 120 brake horsepower. With a top speed of just under 100 mph. This car was also seen in many police films. Usually in black with the London police force. The car would do about 0 to 60 in 17 seconds.

The car that turned up for the MOT test was in great condition

For its age and passed with flying colours. I would like to thank the owner for letting me use the image. Thus, for this blog and if you like this model of Jaguar please log onto the link below for more information. This car is one of many old and classic cars. That we MOT and service here in the Halifax area of Yorkshire. It is here of  course that the Tour de France cycle race. So, will be starting out in early July.As a result is expected to be watched by Millions of TV viewers. Thus, all over the World. There is no doubt that classic cars. Hence, like this Vintage Jaguar Mk2 2-4 will be around for many years to come. lastly, and will be tested on the List of New MOT Rules.

MOT Test Safer Roads-The annual MOT Test make our roads a safer place to drive on.

 Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013/22nd March 2016

MOT Test Safer Roads

MOT Test Safer Roads-Some motorists may think that the ministry of transport (VOSA) are in a money making  racket because you have to take your car to be MOT tested every year to pass a roadworthy test. But they do not see that having those MOT tests, they actually help prevent accidents and cut down on road deaths by keeping badly maintained vehicles off the road.

By carrying out an MOT test every year on vehicles that have been on the road for three years from their first registration, VOSA has successfully managed to lower the number of unsatisfactory cars on the road, making things safe for the rest of us.

MOT Test Safer Roads

MOT Test Safer Roads

So if you have had your car for at least three years then you need to find your nearest MOT test  station and have your car MOT tested. The easiest way is to book online, you can search for MOT Halifax if you need to find your nearest testing station if you live in the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire.

It is possible to take it to any testing station to have it tested there, and you can be on your way soon after you get a test completed. The only thing you need to know is that they are a fully accredited testing station to be able to carry out a thorough and legal test and that they don’t let you get away with small mechanical faults in the road worthiness of your vehicle.

After all, this will defeat the whole purpose of having the tests carried out in the first place. You want to make sure that your vehicle gets through the test as smooth as possible. There are many checks that need to be performed during the MOT Test Safer Roads and your car has to meet the standard for these checks, then you will be ready to go in no time with a pass.

The metal structure of your car needs to be in good condition no rusting or rotten holes. The fuel system, emissions tests and exhaust system needs to be good working order without any excess CO2 than is required.

Your car could fly past the MOT test

Seatbelts and seats must not be rotted and be able to keep you secured. Your brakes must still have enough pads left in them before the next brake check, and your tyres need enough tread to make sure you have the minimum legal requirements. . Make sure your lights and indicators are in good working order and your wipers must be in good condition to ensure they clear the windscreen when it is raining and the rubber blades are in good shape. Your steering and suspension need to be within regulation standards to make sure you are able to control the movement of the vehicle no loose worn parts. Your registration, plates and Vehicle identification need to be in good order as well. So look after your car and it should fly through the MOT Test Safer Roads.

Car Lights Missing-it is important to check your lights to make sure that you can be seen.

Car Lights Missing

Have you noticed all the “one eyed monster” with car lights missing

Just as well lit roads and well-lit highways, in general, are important, so are the lights on your vehicle. Car lights are a safety critical aspect of motoring. But it seems that more and more cars are driving on our roads with lights out.

I have often noticed that cars on the continent especially France drive about all the time with car lights out. I think that the cars in France have an excuse because they only have an Car Lights MissingMOT every two years. Although, this is not an excuse because of the safety concerns that develop by having car lights out.

I call them “ one-eyed monsters”. I feel that drivers have NO excuse for driving about in the dark without the full compliment of light bulbs working. Your car lights play a vital role in the safety of your vehicle and indeed other road users including pedestrians.

It is paramount that you check your lights all the time especially in the winter time. We at Pellon auto center cannot believe the number of cars that are failing the MOT test because of light bulbs that are defective. I can not believe the number of cars that I have seen driving along the M62 motorway of poor visibility such as heavy rain or even fog with a head light off; it is entirely irresponsible.

These days many car manufacturers are fitting light bulb warning lights to alert the motorist that a bulb is out this is a great step forward, and it will be a much safer World when all cars have these sensors fitted.

Car Lights Missing;Remember to get your car lights checked out every week there is no excuse its dangerous

I was coming home from Leeds this Sunday and three cars in a row had missing Halogen Light Bulbs and head light bulbs, there is really no excuse for this please get them checked and

Car Servicing Importance- Regular Servicing Could Also Save You Further Costs ?

Car Servicing Importance

Car Servicing Importance

The best way to compare the price of “car servicing”for your car is to look for all the right things when the time comes for your car servicing.

In these times of recession it is very tempting to skip on your car servicing, but in my opinion the very least you should, is to have an “engine service”, especially if your car has a diesel

Car Servicing Importance

Brakes are the first to suffer from not having your car serviced

engine.

A good example of this is your braking system. Many customers of ours skip car servicing only to find out that there brake pads that needed changing. This has now turned into not just pads but “discs and Pads”. This means that the pads would have been picked up as “very low” on a regular service. Would only costing perhaps £30, have been allowed to wear out causing damage to the metal discs and now costing £130.

This also applies to the other parts on your car. Regular car servicing will pick up faults, that may have just started to wear out and by catching the fault early. This will not spread to other parts causing much larger problems at a later date.

By missing out on your “car servicing” your are storing up “problems” that may occur in the future. One of things that we recommend in these hard times, is to ask your service centre to give your car an “engine service” when your car has its next MOT test.

The lights, steering and brakes will all be checked on the MOT. You will then be notified by the testing station if any failures need attention. If the car passes then you can have an engine service, usually your “OIL and FILTER”changing, now knowing that your car will be in decent condition.

Our testers Ryan new tester Dale are always pleased.Especially, when a customer trusts them with to carry out work.naturally, or a test on such a Vintage cars visit Pellon Autocentre. We always treat our customer’s cars in such a way. But occasionally we are presented with a unique car that ends up in my Pellon Autocentre blog.

To bring this a little more up to date. Vintage cars and modern classic cars such as the Ford Cortina, do not need to be tested. This came as a directive from the European Union. Thus, after much wheeling and dealing became law here in the UK. The older vintage cars are usually kept immaculate. By their owners. Because of their high value. Many of our customers do have an annual test carried out every year. Therefore, this also keeps up to some insurance company stipulations. Because, the old cars still need to be tested to prove their road worthiness, in my opinion, a great idea.

I only hope that Vintage cars visit Pellon Autocentre will be the same for the so-called modern classic cars. One that springs to mind is the old Morris 1000’s. I was recently asked to look at one with perhaps the intention of buying the car, but when we examined it was just an old rust bucket, but did not officially require a ministry test. These are the type of car that worry me; I think that these cars need some tighter regulation, and I hope it comes from the insurance companies to insist on a test before the car can be insured.

The company Wolseley started in business making sheep shearing equipment and later started to produce cars under the direction of Mr Herbert Austin. The company was bought out by the Vickers group but was then later sold to William Morris in 1927.

By the 1950s Wolseley became part of the BMC team and became one of the premier models in their group, which included Riley and MG cars. The cars were very well fitted out using wood and leather for the interiors; these cars were to become very specialised and are now valuable collectors cars. The cars became part of the new British Leyland company, and production was finished in 1975 a sombre day.

MOT testing is carried out at our MOT department of www.mot-halifax.co.uk. We can collect customers cars, or a courtesy car can be booked by appointment. Mot tests are now on special offer at £39.90 quoting “ Wolseley Blog “ as the reference number.

MOT Rolls Royce Wraith Limousine-great to be able to work on these Vintage cars from the past

MOT Rolls Royce Wraith Limousine; Eric Roberts and his MOT testers are pleased that the owner of such a valuable and iconic car.

The car was first bought by a wealthy cotton mill owner from Bradford in West Yorkshire. He bought the car as a gift to his wife. The Rolls Royce, has been kept in “excellent condition”by its present owner ever since. We at Pellon carry out the annual MOT test.
The Wraith Limousine was built by Rolls Royce at their premises in Derbyshire from between 1938 and 1939. It was sold only as a chassis to “independent car and coach body builders”. Who then built individual versions of the body styles for this“great car”.
The Wraith had coil spring independent suspension with large leaf springs at the rear, the car had a six cylinder overhead valve 4257 cc engine, with a four speed gearbox three gears had synchromesh gears fitted.
Drum brakes came as standard and were assisted by a “mechanical servo” driven by the engine from a French designer. This car was fitted with an “hydraulic jacking system” which was operated from a lever under the passenger seat.
Speed depended on the type of body that the car had fitted. Furthermore, the average speed was probably about 80 to 90 mph. Finally, the tyres on the car were 17ins usually Dunlop tyres and the wheels were wire spokes in design.

MOT Rolls Royce Wraith Limousine

The car was in great condition for the mot test.In 1938 the complete touring car would have cost around £1700 to £2000 for a complete car including the body, only 492 cars were built but due to the outbreak of the “second world war” production had to stop. This why some of the cars have later registration numbers. The car that we were working on is registered in 1946 because of the need to hold them in storage until after the war.

MOT Testing Halifax-Wheels and Tyres-Explained

Pellon Autocentre is an MOT Testing Halifax station with over 20 years experience.

MOT Testing Halifax

MOT Testing Halifax

MOT Testing Halifax is part of a series of explanations. About, how the MOT Rules works to keep your car safe and legal. When you prepare your car for the MOT test, the follow advice will apply.Especially, when dealing with wheels and tyres. The first thing to check are the wheels. As a result, if you have alloy wheels.Because, you should check for serious damage and cracks. Also, you must have a full set of wheel nuts fitted. If your car has steel wheels and plastic hub caps.Of course, the nuts will not be checked by the tester. Thus, they will only be checked if you remove the hub caps before the car is tested.

If any nuts are missing then this will result in a failure.
According to the DVLA MOT Rules. The tyre condition is very important. Testers look for any side wall damage and for any cuts or damage to the tyre tread. The tester will also check the tread depth. Using his official tread depth gauge. The legal limit is 1.6 mm across three-quarters of the tread width . This can be detected by a visual look at the tyres.Of course, before you present the car for a test. Tyre manufacturers build into the tyre treads a wear indicator bar.For when the tyre wears down to the bar a bald patch is visible. Police officers also use these bars as away of a quick check of tyre condition.Especially, when stopping a motorist for a check over.

Spare wheels and tyres are not part of the MOT test,

MOT Testing Halifax. You may not present a car for a test with a temporary spare on the car. Also, you must present the car with the best four wheels and tyres on your car. Tyre sizes are checked on the car on the same axle. But other information such as load ratings are not checked.Because, this is deemed as too technical. As a result, some cars may break the law. They are not part of an MOT test and therefore will not fail.
It is always good practice to have your car checked out or have a service when you have your car tested, this will ensure that your car is legal and safe. Pellon Autocentre is leading MOT Testing Halifax area.
