Car Service Tips For the First Time Drivers

car service advice for the young drivers

Having a Car service has always been seen as a big expense to the average motorist and certainly is for the young first time motorists. Most cars will need an annual major service, and in my

opinion for the driver on average mileage should have one or even two smaller engine services.

This (the smaller engine service) usually means the oil and filter changed and the rest of the cars fluid levels topped up. It is also a great idea (if you can afford) for cars over three years old told to have the main service carried out at the same time as the cars MOT test. Your garage will probably advice you to have the MOT test carried out before the service, this is always best practice and is recommended by the Ministry of Transport as the correct procedure to follow.

It also gives you control of your spending budget, indeed what you should do is instruct the Car Garage to inform you of any failures that the test may throw up. You must also ask your garage to give you an estimate of the cost of repairs to your car to get it through the test.

Many customers of garages do this because if the cost of your repairs are high, you may not be able to afford to have the car serviced, indeed you can then cancel the service for a later date, when you can afford to have the service carried. The best practice though is to have the test and the car service carried out in the same day. This will ensure that your car will be in the best condition for your summer holidays or the possible harsh winter ahead.

Most good garages and auto centres carry out a car service  to a high standard.

They will carry out menu services according to the manufactures advice and indeed many garages and auto centres car serviceuse a service menu specific to your car by typing your registration number in to an automotive computer such as “Autodata”, complete with software that will print out the exact Car service menu for your make and model of your car. This also tells the mechanic the precise type of oils to use; this is very important due the diverse types of oil now used in modern car engines. Another advantage of using this technology is that the computers will advise you on the time or mileage it takes before your other parts of your Car service may need changing such as the cam belt. This information should come in the form of advice written as an advisory on your service sheet.

The advisory report that you are given should not be overlooked, but either acted up on at the time or looked at on a later date. Most good garages will give you a the repair costs  at the time of your test or service and this price should be good for about a month after it has been given, however if you go back at a later date it is always advisable to double check the price before you have the work carried out and it is also worth considering that the part that was advised upon may have got worse and indeed spread to yet another part, giving rise to the advice that work should be carried out as soon as spotted and advised by the mechanic in the first instance at the time of the test or service, if your finances do not stretch to having  the work carried out, please get the work done as soon as you can afford it may endanger yours and other people’s lives.

Another good piece of advice is that if you are new to an area and you do not know were to have your car serviced it look for a garage carrying the “Unipart Car Care Code Of Practice” emblem this will ensure that you will get fair pricing and that the garage has been checked for good practice and procedures by the RAC of Great Britain, any quality control procedures by the service centre should give you confidence enough that if any problems occur, they will be dealt with in a fair and proper manner. In general any garage you carries out MOT testing, are usually up to a good standard and are also regulated and controlled by the British Government ministry department known as VOSA.

The usual way to find a good garage is by word of mouth by friends or relations. Other methods are yellow pages or google on the internet. Many garages are in larger groups an example of this would be Unipart centres, you will find this type of centre will offer you the assurances that you will be looking for as regarding workmanship and price fairness.

To summarize most garages and services are good at what they do, most are aided now by sophisticated technology, it is important (and indeed one of our policies) that you get a company that offers you pricing before the job is done and that you also give the garage you phone number so that you can be contacted if any extra work is required or indeed just to tell you that your car is ready. Also try to go to a garage that is regulated by a trade organization, and then if there is a dispute your problem can go into arbitration and hopefully resolved.

eric roberts‘s insight:

When do you have your car service? mot test

Many of the customers who come to my garage for their car serviced choose one method and that is to have their car serviced when it is presented to us for the annual MOT test.

This is the option that many motorists prefer. The reason is that the cost of having any repairs carried out, if the car fails the MOT test and a service means that their car should be road worthy for another year and all the costs come on a one time basis.

Some drivers will have their MOT test carried out and spend their money on the repair work only to find that other problems occur later on in the year. One problem that seems to manifest itself over and over again is the brakes. On an MOT test the brakes are tested on a rolling road and are gauged on their road worthiness by the efficiency reading of the brake tester. The problem is that this does not include a visual inspection of the drums and discs and a car may pass the test but only have a few months wear left on the pads and shoes.

mot test sign

Many of our customers have then to pay more money out later on in the year when their brake shoes or pads wear down to the metal and often cause damage to the discs at the same time. I think that eventually we will be able to remove the wheels to give a better visual report on the condition of the whole braking system.

This is why many of our customers will opt for a service at the same time as their MOT test. It gets everything out of the way and makes for a much safer car and a better maintained car. Some drivers will rely on the service manual that came with their car for servicing  and when the car has been serviced we stamp their service manual to show that the car has had a full service history carried out for when they sell their car on.

The worse ones are the ones that do not have a service at all, that is until something goes drastically wrong. These are the ones who swear blind that they had the car serviced earlier on in the year, but when we check our computer it was indeed two years ago. You can tell the ones, their brakes start grinding and their car won’t pull properly, because the engine has no oil in it, or the filter is completely blocked with age, this is a special problem with diesel engine cars and is a different story.

In the long run people who do not service their cars have to pay out more because they usually have more damage done to the car caused by not having a service.

Car Servicing Choice : Dealer or independent?

Motoring

It’s a question most owners of cars that are still under warranty are often confronted with: “Dealer servicing can be very expensive, independent operators can be less so.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Independent or Main Dealer for Car Servicing Choice ?

To be this is a no brainer, but I would say that wouldn’t I?  This has been a long standing argument, and probably always will be. In both sectors of the car servicing market we have good and bad garages. The main dealers do seem to come and go quicker than the independent garages, probably because they are under the wings about by the Car manufacturers that they are a franchise for.

Car Servicing Choice

Car Servicing Choice Part of Unipart independent servicing garage in Halifax UK

Here in Halifax alone we have had several franchise garages that have closed down, and some have re-opened as they connect with other car manufacturing companies.  For example the Skoda garage becomes the Fiat dealership and so on, it happens all the time, some of them don’t appear to last a year or two before they either close down or change hands, that’s the picture here in the UK and I suspect the same will apply to the States.

On the other hand the smaller Independent garage seem to “tough it out” and providing they are honest and keep a good business  will always survive, although I have noticed that there are a few more smaller auto centres here in the North of England are up “for sale”, mainly because the owners are retiring ,”so it say’s in the adds”. In my opinion it may be because they are under a bit of pressure at the moment, due to the economy, I am not sure.

The larger independent garages are joining national groups, to give them a more corporate image. For example I am a Unipart Car Care Centre, and our garages are vetted for quality and workman ship practices with the emphasis on fair prices for the motorists and a better Car Servicing Choice . This gives me satisfaction that I am a local business as well as a Car Garage, keeping my eyes on local competition and trends, whilst at the same time we have nationwide corporate image, sort of “best of both worlds”. To me this formula is a winner and at the moment we are very busy, so the proof is in the pudding, we can give good service and a good Car Servicing Choice to our customers, where the franchised dealers will always struggle to compete on price and service.
