Car Servicing and Cold Weather can bring drivers higher motoring costs

Sometimes I think that we are lucky with the winter weather here in the UK. Most winters are a mixture of mild weather with cold spells in-between. We certainly don’t get the extreme conditions seen in the USA, with ten foot of snow followed by temperature of 18C, causing the snow to melt and then flooding.

As a keen blogger I know that the winter months are very good for business in the States as the winter approaches and the freezing conditions cause many problems to the American motorists.

Anyhow back to the UK. This winter 2014-2015 has been the usual mixture of cold and mild weather that could affect your car if it has not been properly maintained. I am pleased to say that many motorists have now taken heed of our continuous publicity about the advantages of winter tyres and it has now reaped reward with millions of motorists now fitting Cheap Winter Tyres to their cars and a much safer winter experience for them and other road users.

Pre Winter car servicing can beat off problems

As I have mentioned above, winter tyres are an important part of your car and safety, but other things are also important to have checked. I will start off with your window washer bottle. Make sure that you use a high concentrate wiper fluid when filling the washer bottle, try not to be tempted to buy the really cheap stuff, there is nothing worse than your windscreen freezing because the washer water is made of a weak concentrate.

Check out your antifreeze levels and top them up with the right coloured coolant and antifreeze, check with the instructions on the bottle, to get the right mix. Also make a note of when your antifreeze was last changed; every couple of years should be the right time to have it changed. Wiper blades are also worth checking, but these will be

changed if your car has a pre-winter servicing check out.

Oil too can be affected by temperature change  engine servicing could solve this problem

In my opinion though the UK climate is very changeable, but does not get enough extremes to warrant changing your engine oil in a hot or cold climate. If you are not too sure then your cars manual will give you the relevant information on the different viscosity that you may require if you are heading for a very cold country or a hot country.

Brake and clutch fluid can also be affected by extreme cold weather. If your carry out  regular car servicing then you will not need to worry about the fluid and just have it topped up at your

local garage. Also as I have said in other blogs, it is important that you carry an emergency kit in the car boot, including jump cables and a portable shovel.

Your light are also very important, how many cars do we see driving about on one headlight, I think that they look like motorcycles when I see them coming towards me and it can be very off putting, so always check your lights at regular intervals all year round but because of the short daylight hours, check them more regularly.

As a garage owner I know only too well that the winter weather can bring all sorts of misery to your vehicles and winter is perhaps our busiest times of year, so service your car and eliminate many of the problems that the cold weather will bring you. Only last week one of our customers who is a courier driver, using his own transit van, noticed that his van had started to cut out when driving along.

This was after a very cold frosty night and his van also started to overheat. He rang us up and we suggested that he should come in straight away to prevent any damage to his engine.

car servicing could have prevented a broken water pump

When he arrived the first thing that we did was to check his radiator water for antifreeze. Sure enough the radiator was full but the colour of the liquid was very pale, indicating a lack of antifreeze. In fact this was the problem. Because of the lack of antifreeze the water pump had frozen and the splines connecting it to the power steering pump had sheared off.

This would have been prevented if the mixture in the radiator had been checked and made up to the correct level of antifreeze. The water pump was changed, albeit in a very tight and awkward place in the engine and the guy went about his business delivering parcels.

This is just an example of what can go wrong in differing winter weather, so a little checking or servicing could in the long run save you pounds by the end of the winter.

Peugeot 107-Calls In for a Fan Belt Fitting

Lady driver with a Peugeot 107 Calls In for a Fan Belt Fitting

This little car from Peugeot is a favorite little about town car and is the same car as the Citroen C1 and the Toyota Aygo. The particular model of the 107 that we had in with problems,

had a 1.0 liter three cylinder engine fitted, with a brake horse power of 68, which is really enough for about town driving, but when I have road tested them in hilly Halifax, then they are lacking in power and I have to change right down to second gear to negotiate a fairly moderate hill. In general though the little car is nippy around town and is a favorite with lady drivers. In fact our customer with the problems was a lady driver.

She in fact loves her little Peugeot 107 and loves the way that the car handles when parking and maneuvering, with an excellent turning circle. She did however think that the car does bang and rattle a little when driving over bumpy roads, the suspension is a little hard and some of our other customers have had suspension problems, but like the rest of the country we have been plagued with numerous potholes here in the Halifax area of Yorkshire.

But in general this does not deter the customers from buying these charming little She in fact loves her little Peugeot 107 and loves the way that the car handles when parking and maneuvering, with an excellent turning circle cars, that as I say are more suitable for driving about town, I suppose it is similar to the a modern version of the old Peugeot 106, which had similar characteristics in a bygone driving era.

However; back to the lady with the broken fan belt.

The lady presented us with Peugeot 107 Petrol engine 2007 model, which she thought that she had a broken fan belt. When we examined the car we found that fan belt had indeed come off, but this had been caused by the water pump having a seized up bearing and was also leaking water.

To correct the problem the with her little Peugeot 107 and loves the way that the car handles when parking and maneuvering, with an excellent turning circle had to have a new water pump and fan belt. This type of water pump comes complete with its own bearings and is a relatively easy job to replace. The

whole job took about one hour from start to finish and the lady was able to have a coffee and relax in our reception watching the Commonwealth Games on the receptions TV.

In my opinion this one of the big advantages of owning an independent garage, we are able to repair cars with such problems, while the customers can wait in the pleasant surroundings of a well-equipped reception area. This of course stems back to the days when we were more commonly known as kwick-fit centres, fitting things like brakes , exhaust systems and tyres while the customer waited for the job doing. We of course still do this but cars have become much more sophisticated and the repair times have become much longer, so on some jobs the traditional booking in the car system has to be used, because of the time it may take to carry out the work.
