Dual Mass Flywheel-changed to Solid Flywheel on Peugeot 307

Dual Mass Flywheel

Peugeot 307 Dual Mass Flywheel change? Or was it

Dual Mass Flywheel

New Dual Mass Flywheel fitted in place

If you are the owner of a Peugeot 307. Then if you’re DMF( dual mass flywheel) starts to play up on you. Thus, you may like to know. That an alternative solid flywheel and clutch is available. Hence, as a cheaper replacement.

We at Pellonautocentre here in Halifax UK recently did just that. Consequently, one of our customers asked us to road test his car. Because he suspected that his clutch was on the way out. As a result, sure enough it had gone.Unfortunately, when we checked the clutch out. The car had a Dual Mass Flywheel clutch fitted.

He brought in the car and we split the gearbox to get to the clutch.Sure enough it was fitted with a Dual Mass Flywheel. It comes as a big shock to the hard up customers. Thus, that these expensive clutches are fitted to a regular type family saloon. For this reason, we knew that some of these Dual Mass Flywheel units could be replaced. By a standard solid flywheel and clutch. So, we made a few inquiries. Sure enough there was a normal replacement for this model. Peugeot 307 takes a normal solid flywheel and clutch. Consequently, not the- dual mass flywheel -originally fitted

Dual Mass Flywheel

We gave the customer the choice. However, I think the fact that it was going to cost him much less for the solid flywheel. Swung it in the solid flywheels favour. The standard one was fitted. Finally, the job was completed. Afterwards, the customer went away a bit better off and very happy.

After looking into this a little bit further. Mainly into Peugeot forums on the internet. I discovered that most forum contributors. Subsequently, say that it is all-right to carry out this conversion with only a couple saying to stick to the original Dual Mass Flywheel system, it is a case of “pay your money and take your chance”.

To show you how a Dual Mass Flywheel Failure works I have added a link to a good you-tube video please take a look…

Dual Mass Flywheels were invented to smooth out gear changes on diesel cars, I think this was originally in Germany by BMW in association with LUK clutches.

Dual Mass Flywheel-Lady with RAV4 complained that her car would not pull very well

On the same day we had a lady motorist turn up complaining that her Toyota RAV4 would not pull very well and there was a rattling noise coming from underneath her car these were typical Dual Mass Flywheel Symptoms .

We put the car on a ramp (lift) and sure enough the car had a broken Dual Mass Flywheel. Because the car was not performing well with a suspected Dual Mass Flywheel Failure, the lady decided not to go for a cheaper replacement and we went on to fit a new LUK full DMF replacement. The car and the lady owner went away a happy customer knowing that we had cured her Toyota RAV4 Problems. This just shows two sides of the story, one guy wanted a cheaper job doing on his Peugeot 307 and the Lady wanted the correct replacement for her RAV4, it is always good to give the customer the choice.

Peugeot 206 Clutch- I was driving along and it just went with a Bang? (the clutch)

Peugeot 206 Clutch

Third Peugeot 206 clutch in a week

I could not believe my ears. When a young lady rang us up . As a result, to say that she thought that her clutch had gone. But just to make sure she was calling the AA (Automobile Association) here in the UK . Just to make sure? If the clutch had gone . Then she wanted us at Pellonautocentre to repair it for her.

Peugeot 206 Clutch

Sure enough about an hour later . So the lady customer rang back. To confirm that it was the  Clutch that had gone . Subsequently, it was on her  206 saloon. This would be the third such car clutch in a row.Like buses, they come along in threes.

The Peugeot 206 with the Clutch problem  came in a trailer . We proceeded with the repair .The customer drove away in one of our courtesy cars, we have six such cars to lend to our customers while their cars are repaired. We find that this is important these days for many reasons, but people do not want have any time off work these days and if they know that we have these cars then they will continue to have their car repaired and serviced by us, which can only be a good thing.

Peugeot 206 clutch plate was smashed apart.

The job was carried out by Ryan our top man, who called me out of the office to show me the condition of the clutch plate. The complete centre of the clutch plate was smashed up and all the pieces associated with it fell to the floor, Ryan explained “that this is what the Peugeot 206 Clutch bang must have been like, that the lady had heard”. The car was successfully repaired but is still to be collected because of all the bad snow that has fallen here in Halifax UK.

We always use two year warranty . Unipart clutch kits to original equipment standards with a nationwide guarantee.

Kia Clutch Failure-After examining the car needed a Duel-Mass Flywheel

Kia Clutch Failure

Kia Clutch Failure ;These days a clutch is not that simple

During any normal working week. We may get price inquiries for customers. Especially, with a Clutch Repair Estimates for their car. Some of our customers are just wanting a price from us so that they know

what to budget for.Hence, and other people are shopping around for the best price.

As a business we find it difficult to pitch the correct price. Because a Kia Clutch Failure is much different to say pricing up a tyre. The prices can vary a great deal. Between say the different qualities that garages use. We know that we could get reconditioned clutches for most car models.

But we prefer to use the best quality clutches available. Because many of the original equipment clutches are made LUK clutches . Therefore, we prefer to use them, As it happens, if we cannot get LUK then we go for original equipment clutches. We find that in the long run. We never get any come backs with the better products. Therefore, we certainly do not want to be having to do a clutch job twice.Because of a faulty product. Lifes to hard as it is.

Kia Clutch Failure

new Kia clutch installed by Andrew

Also we are finding that a lot of modern cars are now fitted with duel-mass flywheels, these were invented by LUK in coordination with BMW in Germany, because the diesel cars were very jumpy when changing gear and BMW wanted a smoother gear change.

Kia Clutch Failure

So this system of different springs on a separate flywheel that fitted between the original flywheel and the clutch plate was invented. Many of the other leading car makers have now taken this option up, but it means much higher repair bills for consumers when their Kia Clutch Failure happens, because usually the duel-mass flywheel goes as well, but we dont know until we have stripped the car down to the clutch. A case in point is a job that we have just done on a Kia. The total job timed at seven hours came to well over a thousand pounds, where an older conventional clutch would have been about £280.

This is the reason why it is difficult to give an exact figure when pricing up a clutch for a customer.

Dual Mass Flywheels- a pain in the neck ? Riginally to smooth out diesel engined cars heavy clutches

Dual Mass Flywheels

watch out if your clutch is slipping you may have a dual mass flywheels gone as well?

Dual Mass Flywheels-As with most tyre and auto centres these days we multi-task and carry out all types of repair work, we are blessed to have mechanics that are capable of doing the other more

Dual Mass Flywheels

Dual Mass Flywheels-A recent DMF that we have fitted

difficult kinds of jobs.

One of the main problems we are finding at the moment is the number of cars that are having clutch problems. This is no real problem to us and we take it in our stride, but the most frightening thing that is becoming prevalent is the increasing number of cars that are requiring Dual Mass Flywheels.

What are dual mass flywheels

In the old days we had a simple clutch plate mechanism that would cost perhaps £200 to £300 to repair, from a small to a large car, now thanks to modern technology we have clutch and flywheels that are part of the same unit. The problem is that you can diagnose a faulty clutch but not a DMF Problems (dual mass flywheel). This seems to affect all makes of vehicles we have fitted them on VWs and Toyota’s this week alone, also on Mercedes.

The idea came out to accommodate the modern demands of the lightweight diesel engines, modern motorists demand their diesel engine runs just as smooth as a petrol engine, also giving better fuel consumption. The DMF acts like a damper between the engine and the gearbox to give a smoother ride when changing gears on a manual transmission system.

Basically, there are two types of DMF. One is made up of a primary and secondary flywheel containing springs and cushions. There is a ring between the outer and the inner flywheel that allows them to slip, this is to stop any damage to the transmission when any torque loads exceed the pressure of the vehicles rating of the transmission.

Dual Mass Flywheels

Of course, the ring is the weak spot and can wear out when too much continual engine loads are applied. We find that this could be the reason that problems seem to occur mostly in people carriers.

Of course, the second type has planetary gearing. Specially made for vehicles with low-revving engines. Hence, that give out stronger vibrations when doing low revs. This type should give much smoother gear changes on diesel engines, similar to the same performance as a petrol engine, also giving a better fuel consumption.

I hope that this is informative and that you don’t need one replacing, but if you do look forward to a big garage bill DMF Failure.

Kia Sportage Clutch problem-Customer had bought a second Sportage but the clutch was slipping?

Kia Sportage Clutch problem

Kia Sportage Clutch problem-This is the sort of thing that we have seen before? A customer of ours has bought another second car and the first decent journey has ended up with some sort of problem. In the case of this Kia Sportage, the clutch started slipping.

The worse part about it was that after being the owner for 4 weeks, the guy took the Kia on a two week trip to France. This particular model was a 2.0 CRD

Kia Sportage Clutch problem

injection and had clocked up twenty-three thousand miles.

Everything went well until he drove down the French AutoRoute (French Motorway) on his way to the South. The Kia Sportage Clutch Problem started. He felt

the cars clutch slipping on some of the very steep inclines that are common on the French motorways. They build their motorways over the top of the hills, where we cut through the hills to make the inclines less steep.

Kia Sportage Clutch problem

The clutch did not slip all the time only when the car was overloaded and also when the guy had to accelerate quickly. Otherwise, the Kia performed well. The customer finished off his holiday, without any further problems and made it back to Halifax in Yorkshire.

After a few more weeks he noticed that the gears were getting more difficult to engage. Finally, it became almost impossible to get any gears and so he brought into us at Pellon Auto Centre, to try to solve the problem.

Ryan Lynton our service manager, checked the car over and had no hesitation in declaring that the clutch needed replacing. The guy left his Kia and the clutch was replaced by Alex.

The guy had bought the car privately and so had no real comeback for any compensation. It is just a chance you take when buying a car privately.

Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel – Driver heard a noise when clutch pedal pressed?

Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel, clicking noise?

Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel

Alex splitting the gearbox to get to the Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel

The driver of this Ford Focus presented his car to us. He explained that he could notice a slight change of noise in the sound of the engine followed by a sort of ticking noise?

When asked when the noise occurred he said that it was when started to press the clutch down, to about halfway. Then after the halfway point the noise clears up? The same happens when the clutch is released.

When the car engine is idling, or when you are just driving along, then there is no noise.

Then when your foot is off the clutch (either in neutral or driving in gear) there is no noise.

He said that he noticed for the first time, about a month ago. Ryan my service manager thought straight away that the problems pointed to the clutch and perhaps the Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel.

The Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel is made of many small components and clicking or ticking sounds, point towards the DMF (duel mass flywheel). The sound was only slight and the noise was covered by the car radio.

Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel

At first we recommended that the guy should leave well alone and to see if anything else would develop. He agreed with us and went on his way.

We never saw the car again until a month later? This time the noise became a little louder.

Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel

Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel

Ryan still suspected the Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel as being the problem. We took the car in and split the gearbox from the Focus engine to inspect the DMF and clutch. The clutch release bearing and slave cylinder were examined and found to be OK.

Some reasons for the diagnosis of a problem with your Duel mass Flywheel are as follows:-

1) If you have a slipping clutch; if the cars revs become higher but cars speed does not increase, or it feels like you are riding the clutch when driving along or changing gear. Or sometimes you can smell the pungent smell of the overheated burning clutch.

2) Strange unfamiliar metallic noises (sounds like a rattling chain or bag of knife and forks being shook about). This noise will stop when the clutch is depressed then return of release.

3) If your dual mass flywheel has been wearing for a while then your starter motor may start to slip/spin, when you are starting the car.

The driver with the Ford Focus Duel Mass Flywheel problems came to us in good time. The DMF had started to break up and was replaced, along with a new clutch plate. So if you do hear these noises take it along to your local garage to be examined.

Fiat Punto-Clutch problems since 2004? Popular car in Halifax UK

It looks to me that drivers and owners of Fiat Punto have had a raw deal when it comes to clutches on this

fiat punto, clutch

2004 Fiat Punto in for a new clutch

model of car.

We have noticed that we have done more than our fair share of clutches on this model of car. I decided to do a little research and found some real horror stories, going back to 2002 Punto models.

One unlucky customer with a “52” plate Punto 8 valve version complained to me about several problems that he had encountered, including a very bad transmission judder and other small irritants such as engine noises and various oil leaks. He had just had a clutch fitted, but 1400 miles later the juddering had returned.

He too looked up the Fiat forums and noticed the amount of Fiat owners who were experiencing various clutch problems with their Punto’s. The cars came mainly from the main dealers from different parts of the country, but it looked as though Fiat new about the problem but did little about it.

Some Fiat owners were experiencing problems with a low biting point clutch pedal and rattling noises when changing gears, as if there was a broken spring type of noise. This is a common sign that you have a clutch that needs changing but they did not get much joy from Fiat and indeed many Fiat drivers opted to have their clutches changed by another garage or a mechanically minded friend or relation.

fiat punto, clutch

Fiat Punto clutch old and new.

Other owners complained about their  pedals becoming hard when pressing to change gear. This then developed into them hearing scratching and clicking noises coming from the pedal area of the car, once again this is a sure sign that you need a replacement , in fact this is similar to the latest customers car that we fitted a new clutch to the other weekend and sure enough when we stripped it down the Punto needed a new clutch.

Fiat Punto clutch went again after only 2 weeks

Thank goodness the one that we did the other week was good and the car ran well after we had fitted it with a new clutch, but for some owners that was not the case. One unlucky gut had recently had a new clutch fitted, only to find that a few weeks later the same problems had come back to haunt him. The car had also had a new clutch pedal fitted, but after a few weeks the car once again became difficult to change gear, back to the same problem as pre new clutch?

The problem turned out to be a problem with the clutch bleeding. The mechanic who repaired the car did not know how to bleed the clutch because the Punto’s do not have a normal bleeding nipple system as do many other models of cars and for some reason some air had entered the fluid system of the clutch, making it difficult to change the gears again.

This problem was corrected by the garage who had just fitted the new clutch and the mistake was just put down to lack of Fiat Punto experience, this can very often happen in a garage that repairs mixed makes of cars.

Going back to the Fiat Punto in at my garage for a clutch, well it was only the second clutch that this particular car had fitted since 2004 (ten years), so I do not think that that was at all bad. The job to fit a Fiat Punto clutch is one of the easiest to do and the car was back on the road in a couple of hours, the customer was delighted and off he went a few hundred pounds lighter, but happy?

Ford Focus- Diesel TDi 2004-with Clutch Problems.

In recent weeks we seem to have had a run of cars with clutch problems, that have been brought into our garage Pellon-Autocentre, here in Halifax UK. I think that most garages will have these runs of cars with different problems, sometimes it may be brake problems, and sometimes we have a run of exhaust pipes dropping of. This particular time it has been clutch

problems.

Yesterday was no exception? Sure enough first thing in the morning an AA transporter turned up on the forecourt with a silver car strapped to the back. The car was accompanied by an old customer of ours and when his Focus was unloaded he came into the reception to explain what had happened.

He told us that he had recently been working away down in the south of England. While he was away he had started to have problems with his clutch. He told us that one morning he was driving to work from his accommodation and called in for some diesel. When he arrived back at the car, the biting point of the clutch was very close to the car floor and the rest of the pedal was very sloppy and loose.

He managed to drive the car to his job, (he is a builder for an housing association, who own properties all over the UK, the head office is here in Halifax and he sometimes has to work away to help sort problems out), although he was having great difficulty selecting his gears. When he first bought the  Focus about 18 months earlier he was told that the car had recently been fitted with a new clutch, and this was one of the reasons that he had bought the car, it appeared to be in good condition.

He called out a local garage that topped up the slave cylinder and also told him that the clutch pedals on these Fords have a black plastic hinge type thing attached to it, which is what pushes the master cylinder in. This hinge is attached to the  pedal by a metal rod. The hinge is held in by a clip and it is this clip that can come off causing the problem. This was sorted out by the garage and for a few days all appeared to be well with the  Focus.

Ford Focus driver could smell clutch fluid?

He noticed a slight smell coming from the cars cab, but he did not know what it was, it was apparently clutch fluid that had leaked from his previous problem. The guy told us that after the

ford focus clutch

Focus Master cylinder bearing showing the broken bush

garage reportedly had sorted the Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi problem out then the car gear change was still a bit lumpy. After the job was complete the guy decided to risk it and drive the car back home to the North via the M1.

He decided to call in at the services for something to eat and a rest. On his return to the car, he found that once again the clutch pedal was down to the floor pan of the car, but unlike before there was no bite at all on the clutch. His company had provided their staff with AA breakdown cover, for their employees who travelled away to work, and so the guy promptly called the AA out to the services.

The AA man inspected the cars clutch cylinder to check the level, but soon noticed that the cylinder was empty of fluid. He said that the Ford  was susceptible to these type of  problems and diagnosed a broken master cylinder. There was nothing that he could do as far as road side assistance, and so he proceeded to load the car onto the back of his transporter in order to take the car to the garage of his choice, which was our garage in Halifax.

When proceeded to put the car on lift, and found that clutch fluid was seeping out at the bottom of the clutch housing through one of the vent holes that are there to alloy dust and dirt to evacuate the housing. We diagnosed the problem as a master cylinder failure and reported back to the customer, who by this time had borrowed one of our courtesy cars and gone back to work somewhere here in Yorkshire.

We removed the Ford Focus gearbox and clutch housing to reveal yet more problems?

The engine was dropped and the gearbox removed and then the Ford Clutch housing was separated to reveal the clutch assembly. We found that the hydraulic cylinder bearing had in fact got a broken seal and needed replacing. Then we found that although the  Focus diesel should have been fitted with a duel mass flywheel, it had been converted to a solid single

Ford Focus clutch

Ford  showing old worn out clutch assembly

flywheel, with a normal type clutch plate and to make matters worse, both were damaged. The flywheel was broken and the clutch plate was worn out, and also needed replacing.

We phoned the customer on his mobile and he was not very pleased to say the least, he had expected the clutch to last him more than the 18 months that it had lasted since he bought the car. The old parts were saved for the customer to look at as we always do. Another small problem also occurred? We had some difficulty matching a new single clutch plate with a new solid flywheel, as the old one was a cheap clutch plate and had no part numbers on to match a new one.

With the help of the motor factors we were able find the correct parts and rebuilt the whole assembly. The car works fine now and the customer went away highly delighted, after his initial shock.

The diesel Ford Focus can be converted to a solid single clutch system

When the customer had left I looked at some Ford forums about the conversion to a single clutch assembly and the general consensus is that it is fine to do it. In fact Ford transits can be converted by using genuine Ford parts. That is made especially for these conversions. Also I have heard that many taxi companies convert their taxis to the single clutch system.

Toyota Corolla Driver first noticed a Rattling Noise when Setting Off

1998 Toyota Corolla driver  thought his exhaust had gone

This customer of ours had only bought his Toyota Corolla about six months previously in a private sale with no come backs, so he wasn’t very pleased when the car started to rattle when he was

toyota corolla new clutch

new clutch ready to be fitted

about to set off on a journey.

My customer did not think much of the noise when starting off, he just thought that the exhaust needed repairing and carried on using the car. Another few weeks down the line he

noticed other slight problems, sometimes it was difficult to get a gear and he really struggled to force the gear lever and engage the gear. But in style he still did not do anything about it and carried on using his car, he thought that it was just one of those cars and the problem would go away.

He said that on occasions the car would also get stuck in reverse gear and the car engine was starting to cut out when the gears were stuck in. The guy said that a friend of his told him to check the clutch fluid under the bonnet (hood), but this was OK. He still did not suspect the transmission at this stage and carried on driving the car.

Toyota Corolla clutch can be suspect for a few reasons

One of the commonest clutch problems on a Toyota Corolla is a seized up clutch cable or the clutch linkage may require some lubrication or adjustment. This can show itself up if the plate does not release completely. The clutch may slip if the springs on the pressure plate are damaged or broken, these cars are now sixteen year old and if the clutch has not been changed then it likely that it soon will have to be changed.

The car soon became impossible to drive and was constantly getting stuck in gear and the engine cutting out. The car was eventually brought to us on the back of a car transporter and brought into the workshop for examination. By this time the Toyota  had no drive at all and it did not take long for us to diagnose a problem with the transmission, probably the clutch.

The job was assigned to our up and coming clutch specialist Alex who proceeded to strip the car down to inspect the cover. He first disconnected the battery and started to remove the drive shafts, the ones with the rubber boots at the ends. He then took out the bolts that were holding gear box case to the engine and slid out the transmission so that he was able to inspect the parts.

Toyota Corolla clutch plate was smashed to pieces.

He was not surprised to find that the clutch plate was smashed into pieces and was the answer to why the car did not have any drive at all. We replaced the  parts with new LUK

toyota corolla clutch

parts and rebuilt the transmission connecting all the parts together and finally reconnected the New Car battery.

The  Corolla engine sounded in good shape and Alex proceeded to test drive the car. We can always tell when a job has been a success because Alex had a big grin on his face and it was another clutch under his belt.

Deaf Drivers-Burn out their Clutch because they cant hear the engine revs?

Hard of hearing and Deaf Drivers Burnout their Clutch

Deaf Drivers-I realise that this is a sweeping statement and that people have varying levels of deafness, in fact, I am a little deaf, probably due to my disco days, when they used to blast your ears out

deaf drivers

Peugeot’s burned out clutch after only a year of use

every weekend. According to the following website…http://qef.org.uk/our-services/qef-mobility-services/driving-school/driving-deaf-people deaf or hard of hearing as some like to be called can learn how to change gear by the feel of the engine’s vibration. The different vibrations coming from the different engine speeds can teach the driver when to change gear.

This advice is given to hard of hearing drivers who are just learning how to drive, but I think that the problem is when the elderly driver becomes deafer with age. We have one customer in particular who is profoundly deaf but refuses to accept it.

He first came to us with a clutch problem about five years ago, since he fell out with his old garage, about the fact that they would not change his worn out clutch under warranty. He had the clutch fitted about a year earlier and he had burned it out. Although most quality clutches come with a 2 year guarantee, this does not cover wear and tear due to bad clutch control, but the guy did not think that he was doing anything wrong, deafness had crept up on him and he could not hear the engine noises to tell him when he should change gear, he had become one of the millions of deaf drivers on our roads.

The first time that he came to us we fitted an LUK Clutch, which incidentally we usually use, as we think that they are one of the best products on the market and cover a great range of cars. The clutch was fitted and the customer paid his account and went on his way.

We could not believe the noise that his engine made when he set off. It was a miracle that his Peugeot 206 didn’t blow the engine up. He could not hear the engine noise and the engine were revved up twice as much as it should have been, very similar to a learner driver who tries to drive for the very first time. To our surprise, he forced the gear into first and the car took a

deaf drivers

jump before setting off, we knew it would not be long before we saw him again.

True enough about a year later, the Peugeot 206 CC turned up on our doorstep with guess what? A burnt out clutch. We were not surprised and stripped down the old clutch to take a look. Sure enough, the thing was completely burned out and we had to tell the guy that the problem was due to him being one of the  profoundly deaf drivers, now on our roads. Unfortunately, we had to bite the bullet and explain to him that the Clutch Replacement was not covered by the warranty and he would have to pay for a new one fitting.

He went on to tell us that “that was why he fell out with his old garage”, but we knew all of that and stuck to our side of the story. He finally agreed and began to realise that this was going to be the price to pay for him to keep on driving his car.

We have now fitted yet another clutch to this Peugeot 206

Another three clutches later, he has now accepted the fact that the way he drives will burn out a clutch every year, and yesterday we fitted a new clutch bang on time about a year from his last one. The guy is a lot happier now and accepted that being one of the millions of deaf drivers, it was to be part of life, he lives on his own and says that he never really talks to anybody other than himself (a bit sad) I think. Deaf drivers will have Clutch Problems.
