UK motorists forking out hundreds on unexpected car repair costs Easier (press release) British motorists forked out hundreds of pounds last year repairing whining engines, wonky wheels and patching up scrapes and dents, according to a recent…

eric roberts‘s insight:

Car Servicing has been put on the back burner by UK motorists?

In this good article by the” countrywide independent garage scheme” they carried out a straw poll of 100 UK motorists and found that many of them had car repair bills of up to £500, in fact 64% of them, to be precise.

This is no surprise to me as I believe that many UK motorists have failed to have their cars serviced, in the past two years. This neglect will lead to all kinds of problems affecting

UK motorists

their cars and the cars performance. We see the effects of this all the time, but I think that the most common problem is the brakes. If the cars brakes are checked on a service, then the usual things that need replacing are the pads, this together with a good brake cleaning is usually all that is required.

The problem then is that if the car is not serviced, then the Brake pads wear even further down before getting down to the metal plate. This then affects the brakes especially the Disc Brakes and because it

then becomes metal on metal then the discs get damaged and they may need replacing. Other problems include the brake cylinders overheating and leaking and the problems can go on and on, always leading to a bigger repair bill for the UK motorists.

This is also a problem with the modern engines. The engines these days are controlled by a computer system in the car and if the filters and oil are not changed then the parts that are part of the engine management system can start to fail and the engine light will illuminate in the cars dashboard, often causing panic amongst the drivers who come into us garages to have the problem checked out. Sometimes the problem is a simple one and the car only requires an oil and filter change and other times it could be more complicated, but in the main most of the causes are due to the car not having a service and general neglect.

Although we are not members of the country wide garage scheme, we are a member of the Unipart Car Care Centres (UCCC), but we all share the same thoughts and know what the problems are likely to be if the car is not serviced.

Another slightly worrying trend amongst car drivers is the concept of using the annual MOT Test as a gauge for the condition of their car. The MOT test is not the same as having a regular service, and although the test is fairly strict it is not the same as having a good service say once a year. The UK motorists  can then keep an eye out on such things as your oil levels and tyre pressures and check your own light bulbs.

We all understand that money is tight but in my opinion the failure to service your car will lead to the UK motorists having bigger problems and bigger repair bills.

Hi I would like to introduce myself. I have worked in the Garage and tyre and Battery business now for 40 years. I worked for a couple of national tyre companies before starting my first business. I now own a company here in the UK called Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre, and I am a keen blogger about anything to do with cars and their related products that will help my business.

Nissan Qashqai-Diagnose with Noisy front Wheel Bearings Problem.

Wheel bearings are a common thing to fail on modern cars, including the Nissan Qashqai, because of the pressure exerted on the wheel bearings?

Your front wheel bearings are located inside the front hubs of your car and come in pairs, there is an inner bearing and an outer bearing that are located inside your front hubs, where the wheel fits onto. The wheel bearings need much lubrication and so are packed with special grease.

The job of the bearings is to allow the cars wheels to turn freely; the Ball Bearings support a thrust load and a radial load. The thrust load comes from the weight of the car and the radial load comes from the forces that are applied to your when cornering. The bearings sometimes come separate and have to be pushed out and the new ones pressed in by a hydraulic press, but today many come as a complete hub unit with the bearings already assembled, as in the case of this Nissan Qashqai.

The usual complaint about noisy bearings is that the customer can hear a whirring noise from the front or back of the car. The cause is usually because some dirt or grit has entered the bearing and mixed with the special grease that is supposed to protect the bearings in the first place. Ryan Linton took the car for a test drive and soon recognized the problem on the Nissan Qashqai to be the wheel bearings.

The customer booked the car in for the wheel bearings to be changed.

The week later the customer left the car with us and Ryan changed the complete hub with the bearings included. Wheel bearings are a common thing to fail on modern cars, including the Nissan Qashqai, because of the pressure exerted on the wheel bearings due to the heavier cars and extra low profile tyres and wheels all adding extra pressure to the bearings, both front and rear. Apart from being noisy the bearings can have play in them which is also an MOT failure here in the UK.

Using new Nissan Parts the Nissan Qashqai was completed and road tested and the noise was cured for a happy customer.

Car Repair Garages-This is the way forward for car repair garages? ChipsAway in Abingdon puts customers first.

Car Repair Garages

Smart receptions in the car repair garages like this should be the norm in 2013

If your heart sinks every time you know that a trip to the Car Repair Garages for a minor car  repair garages, scuff or dent repair is needed, you’re not alone. (Is this the way forward for car repair garages? ChipsAway in Abingdon puts customers first.

For the car repair garages to survive they must have modern facilities for their customers.Car Repair Garages

This is a point I have been making for the past twenty years at least. The American companies were the first to supply their customers with a reception and waiting room for the car repair garages. This was picked up by Tom Farmer when he visited America and on his return home decided that this was the way forward, and implemented the new style reception areas into his early Kwik-fit empire.

After that Car Repair Garages UK all over the UK began to copy his style of operation, but many of the Auto Repair Services and car repair garages were too small and half of them were just back street dirty places and would not have warranted money spending on them. Altogether though it was a huge improvement and many tyre depots and Car Repair Garages where brought into the twentieth century and were fit for motorists to sit in while their car was been repaired, or their tyres were been fitted.

As time went on more and more ladies were taking up driving and the move to step up the facilities in the car repair garages was imminent. The customers wanted a better experience when visiting the garage or tyre depot for work doing on their cars. The main dealer garages started to introduce courtesy cars, to loan to their customers while work was been carried out on their cars, a good idea!

The courtesy car idea became a little tarnished when some of the garages started to charge for their use, or for insurance. I thought this was a negative affect and was not in the spirit of the idea. We at Pellon Tyre and Autocentre in Halifax UK provide courtesy cars for our customers, mainly because we are about two miles out of the town centre, and it allows our customers to go shopping or to work, while their car is been repaired.

Many of the switched on Car Service Garages offer their clients  a free coffee machine in their reception as well as a TV and up-to-date magazines for their entertainment while they are waiting for a Car Repairs or an MOT or a tyre fitting. In my opinion this is what today’s modern consumer wants, this coupled with the fact that as I have said earlier, many of our customers are now ladies and they do not want to turn up to a dirty old Car repair garages in their nice clean clothes.

So this standard is the way forward and any garage or tyre fitting station that does not have customer facilities will fall behind and eventually perish.
