Maintenance Free Batteries
Choose Maintenance Free Batteries when possible.
Maintenance Free Batteries are known as “sealed batteries“. These types of batteries are sealed to the motorist. Because the MF batteries do not require any topping up, with distilled water .
The story goes back to the manufacturing process. Thus, when the Maintenance Free Batteries are first made. It starts off with the lead alloy plates.Hence, that hold the batteries charge. As a result, the plates in the MF batteries are made from lead and lead-calcium alloys. So, and not of a purer lead as makes up the normal lead-Antimony battery. Therefore, you often see with the screw tops fitted. This mixture of lead-alloys makes it possible for the sulphuric acid to act in a different way, in fact the MF batteries do not loose the same amount of water/acid therefore you do not have to top up your battery , as in the normal car battery with a screw top lid.
It it therefore possible. Hence, to fit the Maintenance Free Batteries with a sealed lid. So there is no topping up. The only addition to the sealed cover is two small valves. Often, when the battery reaches a very high temperature. naturally, this valve will release the pressure and then re-set itself.
The MF batteries come in all the same sizes. As conventional lead-antimony batteries. Because the MF batteries has a flat top. Non-sealed batteries have six screw tops. Thus, to allow you to top the battery up. In other words, if the battery has screw tops then it is not an MF battery.
In my opinion, the MF batteries are a much better option,
when buying a new battery and once again look at the tops when purchasing on the internet, if they have tops then odds on they are NOT Maintenance free batteries.
Lucas are MF batteries with models to fit all cars, they will be dispatched for following day delivery on weekdays in mainland Britain.
