Car batteries Care-Caring for your batteries during the winter months

Car batteries Care

Car batteries Care during the winter months

The Rome Observer

(METRO) — Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life.

Car batteries Care-Why do your Car Batteries fail in the Winter?

As silly as it may seem many drivers hardly use their cars. Hence, in the winter months. Indeed some drivers lock the cars away in the garage, (if they have one).

car batteries

This is where most scrap car batteries end up? but 95% of them are recycled a great achievement?

Nothing can be more stressful. As a result trying to start your car on a cold winters morning. Therefore, only to find that your car wont start. Of course, it is one of the saddest sounds that you as a driver will hear. When the battery just makes a slow grinding noise. Hence, made by the starter motor. As it tries to start up your car. Normally the engine just zips up. Hence, at the turn of the key and off you go. So but not this morning, it’s frosty and -2 C or bellow. Therefore, the car will not start up.

This is the scenario .That thousands of motorists a day will experience. Of course, a bit of knowledge goes a long way. Setting out a few facts can help the motorist understand. Consequently, a little more about their 12 Volt Battery car batteries. Including, how they respond to the climate. The two extremes of weather conditions, the cold and the heat will affect your car batteries performance.

Here in the UK we rarely experience excess heat, so I will concentrate on the cold.

In cold weather the chemical action in the battery will be slowed down and I have actually seen the battery liquid (sulphuric acid) frozen solid.

Car batteries Care-The corrosion on this battery must be removed

off keeping your car in a garage if possible, either in really cold weather or overnight. What happens is that although it may be cold in the garage, the heat from the engine when the car was run the day before, will act as a heater for the battery as the engine compartment will still retain the heat.

If the battery is over five years old then it should be replaced with a new battery, most car batteries will fail after the five year period, and this is what we have found over the years, also imported cars from the Far Eastern countries such as Japan, China and South Korea are imported with batteries that are lower specifications that the ones made for the European market, these batteries do not stand up to the cold weather and usually fail early on in the cars life.

The best thing that drivers can do is to have their car battery checked before the onset of winter and replace It if necessary, but in really severe cold as experienced in the USA recently, then the battery could still fail without further protection from the cold.

Car batteries Care-A few things to look out for when buying your new battery.

Make sure that it is the correct battery for the car and has the same power, the same number of amps and cold cranking amps. It will be all right to go bigger if it will fit the cars battery compartment as long as the battery has the same voltage, usually 12volts and 6volts on classic cars and vintage cars.

Here are a few more tips if the weather forecast is for really cold conditions. You can use a battery blanket, to cover the battery and stop it freezing. You could also use a trickle charger, because the battery will retain some heat as the battery is been charged up, and stop it from freezing. If your car is stored in the garage for a period of time then disconnect the battery and try to keep it on a trickle charger when the battery is in storage, you can buy cheap intelligent chargers now that will do this job.

Car Battery Check-Make sure that your family are safe by checking your CAR BATTERY before a journey

Car Battery Check

Make sure that your family are safe with a Car Battery CheckCar Battery Check

On a recent visit to France, we unfortunately broke down due to an electrical fault on our Peugeot van. Just by a coincidence another English vehicle in a few car spaces near to us was also broke down, this vehicle was a Citroen C4 Picasso people carrier, and was occupied by a family of six , four children and their parents.

I went over to the guy, who was looking under the bonnet (hood) of his car, and asked him what had gone wrong. He told that the orange alternator light had come on, but he carried on and did not suspect that the light would cause a problem. He went on to tell me that he had suspected that the car may have had a dodgy battery for a few weeks, but he just kept on charging it up because he did not use the people carrier very often, in fact he only used the car for family outings and visits to the sea side.

I told him that I was in the Car battery business and suspected that a Car Battery Check would do the trick I am amazed at the number of drivers that I come across who are hell bent on trying to keep a dead battery alive, by constantly trying to charge up their old, and probably dead battery up, trying to keep the thing alive. Most drivers fail and eventually give up their dead battery and go out to have a professional Car Battery Check before buying  buy a new one.

Car Battery Check

We were both members of the AA, a British breakdown organisation, that covers the whole of Europe, and sure enough a breakdown truck arrived to attend to the guy with the people carrier. The system in France only allows the AA Recovery to attend a breakdown on the road side or hard shoulder of a motorway.

This is French law and I think it has something to do with protecting the livelihood of the French garage trade, something that the French are good at, protectionism. The English guy did have a Car Battery Check and needed a new  12 Volt Battery. The battery on the vehicle was a common size, known to us as a 096. These batteries cost about £60 here in the UK, but the driver got a shock when the new battery cost him 140 Euros.

His breakdown cover may not have covered him for what we call renewable s, so the lesson there is do not mess about trying to resurrect your old car battery,

just go and buy a new one. The whole experience of breaking down would have put a lot of pressure on his family, not knowing if they would not reach their holiday destination or not, just for the sake of a Car Battery Check before starting off on a journey.

A car battery chack would have picked up the poor condition of this car battery. This is an example of a car battery that needs a really good clean

Car Battery Check

My wife and I have had eight children together over the past 35 years and have traveled extensively all over Europe. We have broken down a couple of times in our people carriers and so we know about the pressure that breaking down can put on the whole family. It is not worth the hassle and stress, just because you did not prepare your car and had a not knowing if they would not reach their holiday destination or not, just for the sake of a Car Battery Check before starting off on a journey.

Get valuable, relevant advice from the UK’s leading driver-focused road safety organisation (Your Car battery can die at any time of year but more likely when the cold temp hits the battery.

Your car battery

Like so many products these days, car batteries are better made than ever.  I am of coarse talking about the 12 Volt Battery that at the moment fit most of cars that are on our roads. The lead acid battery has been with us for many years now and has now developed into a reliable part of your cars electrical system.

Over the years we have noticed that the batteries fitted to Japanese cars seem to last the longest from new, usually about seven years before replacing. The batteries on car batteryFords and Vauxhall cars only last about three years before a replacement is required. I do not really know why this, I guess it must be something to do with the rest of the cars electrical system. The batteries that the cars are fitted with original equipment are usually of good quality. We know this because we can buy the same products from the battery manufacturer with different make labels.

For instance Johnson Controls, one of the World’s biggest  makers of the New Car Battery (if not the biggest) make batteries for the car manufacturers and for the replacement battery market, so unless they are told to make the batteries to a lower standard, the products should be the same quality. We buy batteries that are made by Yuasa, In 2004, Yuasa Japan merged with Japan Storage Battery to form GS Yuasa Corporation.

When we replace a Discount Car Battery from a car that has been made in the Far East almost every battery that we replace is either a “GS” battery or a “GLOBAL” battery and these batteries appear to last longer than their European counterparts, or is it the Far Eastern car makers that make their cars electrical systems better?. It please me though because the Tungstone batteries that we sell on Batteries OnThe Web.co.uk  are made by Global batteries and also Fiamm Car Batteries in Italy.

Cheap Car batteries-A Place Where You Can Get A Good Deal On Your Car Batteries

Looking for cheap batteries for your car? Here are some excellent tips to keep in mind to find cheap car batteries.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Cheap Car batteries and Quality

Most motorists are looking for  cheap car batteries at the moment, but you can get quality car batteries at a cheap price. The main thing to start with is the reliability of the company and can you trust them if you have a problem. Also to keep your side of the bargain are you honest about the correct use of the battery. One guy recently bought a battery to use on a go-kart and did not charge it in between races then complained that the battery was faulty; we get many similar cases like this. So if you are buying a battery for your car fair enough, but if you are using it for other reasons, you will have void the warranty, because we have no way of knowing that the battery was correctly charged, as a good working car would do.

the driving force behind start-stop. – VARTA Automotive

Going back to where I was, cheap car batteries are not always the best option. If you are selling the car then it would be a good idea to fit the cheap car battery, but if you are intending to keep your car then you should look for the best name that you can afford. You would be surprised at the variation of battery makes that are out there in the market place, the choice that we have is fantastic, so make the right choice for your car.

Another point to consider is the choice of Car Batteries for the later models that are full of electrics. If you own this type of car then it is important that you stick to the same powered battery that was fitted as original equipment. Do not skimp for a less powerful battery. Even the newer Peugeots can now come with electric doors and stop-start technology, so be smart and choose a well-known make such as Lucas car batteries or Varta batteries, both made in

Cheap Car batteries

Fitting a new Lucas car battery after the original failed to start and would not jump off, cheap car batteries are not always the answer

Europe by Johnson Controls the World’s largest battery manufacturers, supplying a top class product and all the time creating better battery products for today’s greener car technology. You could also go for Tungstone batteries made by Global batteries.  As I have said previously the cheapest is not always the best and go with an established company where you know that any future problems will be solved.

Winter driving tips

Car Battery Care can last for more than around five years, so if your car is approaching that sort of age and is still using its original battery, it’s worth getting it checked over.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Car Battery Care

A Battery is something just stuck under the bonnet

To most car drivers the cars battery is just something that is stuck under the bonnet (hood). So, the only time they will know that it exists is when the car will not start and it is

Car Battery Care

Testing this cars battery is all part of Car Battery Care

usually in the middle of nowhere. Of course, or when you are driving to that important meeting on a cold winters day.Hence, your battery Care, is the last thing on most drivers minds ? .

The days are getting much shorter now and the nights colder. Hence, you will also be using more of the cars electrics in winter. Especially the heaters, wipers, and lights.  In fact you will be using everything electrical. Thus putting your cars battery under immense pressure. Also you should be using the cars air-conditioning system to clear and de-mist another power

sucking piece of equipment that will drain the cars battery. Also, not forgetting to de-ice the car before you set off on your journey.

According to the RAC here in the UK, lack of Car Battery Care is the biggest cause of car breakdowns and the problem starts to get worst at this time of year.

Most of the Cheap Car Batteries are only guaranteed for two years, but the batteries fitted to new cars will last on average for about five years.

Car Battery Care

So if your car is five years old or over, be prepared to have to change the battery, before it lets you down.

There are many Causes of a Flat Battery. You can have a free battery check if you are having Car Battery Problems at most garages, but if you need a garage that you can trust ,then look online for your nearest Unipart Car Care Centre, they have a network of garages that can be trusted on price and service.

Also if you do have your car serviced at regular intervals then Car Battery Care will be carried out by your garage. They will clean and test your battery in with the service.

Van Battery Care-Your Car is at Risk! – Reasons for your Car Battery to Fail?

Van Battery Care

Corroded battery terminals require cleaning

Frequent battery failure can cost you thousands of dollars for repairs. You can avoid Van Battery Care problems by following regular maintenance. To reduce chances of  van battery failures, it’s critical to understand its causes.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Give your car battery a winter check

As we all know winter is just around the corner here in the Northern hemisphere. The weather is turning colder at night and this will affect the performance of your car battery. To keep you car battery lasting longer there are one or two things that you can do.

If your van battery has the old type screw tops, then you can inspect the level of the acid in your battery, with Van Battery Care, this can be checked and remedied. If this is something that you have to do at often intervals then it means that the battery is boiling and could have a faulty alternator. You should top the battery up with distilled water and recheck it a few days after, to see if the level has dropped again. If the level has dropped then you should get your alternator checked at a good garage.

If are reading this in the UK and you do not know of a good garage, then look up the nearest Unipart Car Care Centre(UCCC) in your area, they have safeguards to protect you the

A simple voltmeter can tell you lots about your battery

customer and a fair price policy, but more than that they can be trusted.

Also another Van Battery Care tip is to look out for white coloured powder on the top of the  battery, this indicates a leak around the terminals, the white powder is dried battery acid. You can clean it off using a cup full of warm water, but if it is a recurring problem it means that the battery is on its way out and needs replacing before it lets you down, on your deliveries. It is a good idea to always keep a Car Battery Charger and a 12V Voltmeter,to hand as it may just keep you going for a few more winter days, until you can buy Cheap Car batteries Online.

This is about the limit that you can go to check over your battery and look after it, after all has I have said the last thing you want is for the battery to let you down, when you

least expect it and having to be towed to the nearest garage to have it seen to, and paying over the odds because you are stranded. That is if they have a battery to fit your car, you may have to wait another day if they have to order a new battery.

More reading…”If you often see leaks under your car, it’s about time to check your van battery. Extreme weather condition can cause the battery to crack and leak. Ford Car Batteries-University of Michigan Open New Battery Lab – Sci-Tech Today

Ford Car Batteries

An up to date Hybrid battery that has been developed by Johnson Controls

Post Updated 10th Jan 2014

Ford, University of Michigan Open New Battery Lab

Sci-Tech Today

A new $8 million battery lab at the University of Michigan will help develop Ford Car Batteries that are smaller, lighter and less expensive to make.

eric roberts‘s insight:

FORD TO INJECT MONEY INTO MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY FOR BATTERY DEVELOPMENT

The University of Michigan will soon be setting up a new department, to study and develop new Ford Car Batteries, with the financial help of Fords .

The Ford Car Batteries will be developed for there longevity quality and their endurance

It is a known fact that the electric car has been a slow seller for the Ford Motor Company and it will also be important to develop a battery that is a cheap battery, it will be one of Fords priorities to bring down the price of these Ford Car Batteries.

Electric cars have been very slow to take off, reaching only 1% of the American car market in the year that’s just passed. The Hybrid cars (EV”S) a mix of petrol and battery power  have fared better, taking up just 3% of the total market.

This in part is due to the  high cost of these cars, due mainly to the lithium-ion batteries that are the main source of battery power at the present time.

With the help of  a $5 mil grant this new university department is expected to develop a cheaper alternative battery ,that is hoped will bring down the cost of the Ford Car Batteries and the Ford electric cars.

Yorkshire Car drivers-BEWARE of the M62 Speed Camera Gantries

Yorkshire Car drivers BEWARE of the M62 Speed Cameras

I am a resident of Kirklees and have been a user of the M62 motorway ever since it was built. In my opinion it has been a great asset to the people of West Yorkshire and Lancashire, in fact I do not know what we would have done and how the roads would have coped without it.

Yorkshire Car drivers

Yorkshire Car drivers be aware Part of the M62 traffic management system in West Yorkshire

The big problem with the motorway, as we all know is the stretches between junction 25 (Brighouse turn off) and junction 27 (Gildersome turn off). Over the years this stretch has many accidents and hold ups, making it one of the major black spots on the UK motorways. It came as great relief to the Yorkshire Car drivers, “including myself”, when it was announced that this section of the M62 was to be upgraded and turned into a controlled system, similar to the one in Birmingham on the M 42 and part of the M 1 Motorway south of Sheffield.

The work began about three years ago and we were all subjected to a 50 mph speed limit and many delays due to accidents and vehicles breaking down. Eventually the work progressed and we started to see the rise of the gantries covered in Motorway Traffic Cameras over the road, which would be used to control the traffic in the various lanes. I could not wait and gradually the work was competed and the speed signs directing us to what speed we should be doing.

In my opinion I think the new system is really good and it is nice to see some development on the road system for the Yorkshire Car drivers in the North where I think that in the past we have been heavily neglected by various Governments in all fields of investment. As I drive all around the country I cannot believe the investment that has been poured into the South and places like Wales and Scotland, I truly think that we have been starved of money here in West Yorkshire at the hands of politicians to please other regions of the country.

However we must not complain the car driving population of Yorkshire have now got a new controlled section of the great M62, knowing that we will see less holdups and witness less delays.

Keep your car speed bellow 70mph?

There is however one thing that we should all watch out for, “DON’T TAKE YOUR CAR ABOVE THE 70 MPH LIMIT”. It is now known that when the gantry lights are off that the speed cameras are still working and have been “flashing” drivers who have been exceeding the speed limit. I am an older driver and rarely take my car over the limit, but there are thousands of Yorkshire Car drivers who think that the limit is now 80 mph. So when you are driving your car on this section of the M62 beware, the speed cameras are there to get you.

According to the Huddersfield Examiner “West Yorkshire Police refused to comment further but the Highways Agency has now confirmed the new £150 m overhead gantry system between Huddersfield and Leeds CAN catch speeding Yorkshire Car drivers, even when it is not being used to slow the traffic”…More Reading…http://www.examiner.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/highways-chiefs-reveal-m62-cameras-6152759

096 New Car Battery -Check Your Alternator as well as your old battery

096 New Car Battery

096 New Car Battery and Car Alternators

If your car requires another 096 New Car Battery. Hence, it is well worth having your cars dynamo checked out. We here at batteriesontheweb.co.uk  have fitted thousands of car batteries . Only for the car

096 New Car Battery

When having a new 096 New Car Battery fitted always have the dynamo checked out, or you may be storing trouble for yourself in the future, with a further battery failure.

owners to return in a week or two . Stating that theirs  is “not working very well”. Only to find out after a test. That it is not working correctly.
When you have a new one fitted . Then, you should ask yourself a few questions?.

096 New Car Battery

A simple voltmeter like this is a handy tool to have, and will show how many volts that your battery has in it.

Has yours  failed? Are you absolutely certain that it isn’t something else . Such as the  starter?. Determining which part has failed . Therefore, is essential toward avoiding unnecessarily costs . By

replacing something that hasn’t even really failed. Although it is usually the case the faulty alternator can also have damaged your 096 New Car Battery. Let’s take a look at some steps you can take to determine that your has failed and has not in fact,  packed in?.

If you own an voltage testing machine, you can test to see whether your car’s Alternator  is charging correctly. For most people this isn’t practical, as few motorists own such an expensive piece of equipment. For everyone else, there is a practical way for you to easily check to see if yours  is working properly:

096 New Car Battery

1: Connect a volt meter to your 096 New Car Battery. These can only cost about £6 from E-Bay and are a useful tool to own.

2: Start your car

3: Observe the voltage output on the volt meter so that you can make an accurate determination.

If there is an increase in voltage when you start your car, then your alternator is more than likely working just fine. It will be most Likely that  your battery is the culprit; check the 096 New Car Battery itself and the connections to make a final determination.096 New Car Battery

If there is no increase in voltage, you are likely looking at having to replace your alternator.

The next step, of course, is to determine whether you will replace the alternator yourself or have someone else do the job. Some things to keep in mind as you weigh your options include:

If you trust your vehicle to a local service centre or better still a Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC), what will the total cost of the work be including the part and labour? Will there be a guarantee? From a Unipart centre they will certainly be a guarantee, on most parts this will be 12 months on electrical goods and 2 years on other parts.

If you decide to do the work yourself, do you have all the tools on hand to get the work done? Do you own a repair manual? Do you want to purchase a new alternator or will a re-conditioned unit do the job? Another option would be to buy one from the local scrap yard, but you could be in a similar position six months down the road.

096 New Car Battery

Your choices today are much greater than they were say ten years ago, before internet shopping became a strong factor in bringing down the price of high auto parts prices. Several online wholesalers, including the Andrew Pages of this world,This way of buying is fine but to-days cars are becoming much more refined and complicated and even we at PellonAutocentre in Halifax make mistakes and order the wrong ones.
In my opinion it would be best to leave the job to the experts and visit your local Unipart Car Care Centre, who will give you a FREE battery test and also knowing that the work carried out will be guaranteed throughout the UK, to give you a great peace of mind.

is kinda bad or not very good or a little weak, then go ahead and replace it because it’s better now to replace…

eric roberts‘s insight:

Winter is when your battery is likely to fail

In general most car batteries fail in service during cold weather in winter time, There are many problems that could affect your car battery. With new modern cars with all their electrics you will find that the battery will fail you suddenly, this is because of the large amount of electrics that the modern car battery has to handle, including engine management computers.

In the past if were having freezing nights. Therefore, it would take a car battery a couple of weeks to actually fail. Thus, giving the car owner plenty of time to find a replacement battery. Hence, the problem is now the car battery will fail suddenly.Usually, just where you don’t want it to. Especially, when you are out and about. Many of our customers.Who have a flat battery, will call us out. Because they are stuck in some town centre or shopping mall.

Now we say that the battery should be tested. Consequently, before the winter comes. Or at your regular service period. Predominantly, before the onset of Winter. Thus, we always test the battery and report back. Especially, if there is any signs that the battery may fail. Perhaps, in the near future. Most of our clients will respond to this and replace the battery before they get caught out."<yoastmark
