Car Battery Problems-Or could it be your Car Alternator that is blamed.

Car Battery Problems

Unfortunately, the two things are very closely linked. Many customers call in knowing that they have car battery problems. The number one sign is quite evident? The car will not start. This is mainly in the cold weather of wintertime.

It can also become a problem in hot summer weather when the air conditioning is working at full pelt. This problem, can show up a failing battery and give the owner what

Car Battery Problems

Typical modern alternator

he thinks are car battery problems.

I must confess that the first thing we do is to test the battery and the alternator with the same piece of equipment. This usually fails the car battery, and we then fit a new one. Nine times out of ten, this will do the trick. However, a faulty alternator could make the original problem re-occur.

When we talk about car battery problems, we need to understand a little about, what the alternator does? The primary task is to keep the battery charge topped up at the correct level. This is when the driver is using a significant amount of electrics in the cars cab.

In winter time it will be the car lights and the heater system that takes much of the power from the battery and making the alternator work hard, replacing the charge back into the battery. This could also be a clue to the driver that the car is about to have some car battery problems.

Car Battery Problems

One of the first signs is that your cars lights may appear to be shining dimmer. This is usually an alternator problem. Too much or too little power back to your battery will make your lights dimmer.

This was more common on the older type, what I call “dynamo” alternators. Lights dimming were one of the first signs that the dynamo bushes, (that created the electricity to charge up the battery) were wearing down and therefore not doing the job correctly. When the alternator was not passing enough charge, then the light would dim, or the heater would work slowly and make a distinctly different noise to what it should make.

A good point about the older type of alternator is that it could be repaired, by fitting a new set of bushes. Older mechanics would remember this well. It was a job usually given to the junior member of the garage staff.

When the earlier alternators failed then, the first thing to happen would be that the driver would start to have car battery problems. What they did was to boil theCar Battery Problems battery almost dry, and the battery needed replacing. In many cases, the alternator would fail completely and would have to be repaired along with fitting a new car battery.

Car Battery Problems

The more modern car alternator is much more complicated. They are indeed connected to the entire cars electrical system via the cars ECU (on-board computer). The modern alternator works similar to a smart charger, applying a constant charge replacement to the battery in a more efficient manner than the old type dynamo charger.

This type of alternator usually fails because of a faulty circuit board and will fail at once. These alternators are repaired by specialist companies, and we buy them as we need them as exchange units.

One thing that we have learned about batteries and alternators is that when a battery goes, we here at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax UK, always check the cars alternator when we fit a new battery. This gives us a piece of mind that the new battery won’t be damaged by a faulty alternator in a few weeks’ time.

Starter Motor on my Jeep made a loud Clunking Noise

Starter Motor

Suspected starter motor

A few week ago now, a guy came into my garage and asked us to fit him a new battery. We always test the old battery, unless the customer tells us the old one is completely dead. This guy Starter Motorhad a Jeep and we said that the battery had been slow to start the car for about a month now and he thought that it was going to let him down completely. He worked in Manchester about 30 mile away from Halifax here in Yorkshire and so did not want to risk expensive breakdown chargers. We fitted a new battery and the guy went away happy. After about a month the guy turned back up again.

He said that the problem appeared to be cured after the new car battery was fitted, but recently he had started to hear a low level clunking noise coming from the engine when he started the car. He said that it was the old problem that was occurring and could the battery be faulty?

This also happens with a faulty alternator.

The first thing that the customer does is to buy a new battery, then a few weeks later , the car still has starting problems because the alternator has been under-charging or over-charging. Eventually the car has to have a replacement alternator. It is the same with the starter motor, although the starter is not as common a fault as the alternator, at least not here in Halifax.

Our top mechanic Ryan went out to check the car out and found the clunk was indeed coming from the starter motor when starting the car. There are a few things that you need to know

about diagnosing this problem. The main one is when you try to start the car, (and this applies to all cars and vans, in fact any vehicle that is fitted with a starter motor, will have similar symptoms) you turn the key to turn the engine over, but nothing happens, the engine will turn over. This is what would have eventually happened to the Jeep.

Also when you try to turn over the engine you hear a loud click.

In this case the car’s engine will still not turn over. This scenario is also the same as a dead flat battery, but I am presuming that the cars have had a new one fitted, prior to the starter clicking again. This can go on for a little while and sometimes the car will eventually start. The starter engages with the vehicles flywheel and turns over the engine until the car starts, and sometimes it is the starters gear teeth that are broken. But if you are lucky enough the hit the starter key at the right time, then the car may just start.

Back in the olden days cars with inline engines would have a cranking handle. So that you could turn over the engine, by hand (if you were strong enough). However cars started to come out with front wheel drive engines and the cranking handle became obsolete.

Our Jeep needed a new starter motor

Ryan very quickly diagnosed that the starter motor needed replacing, and after giving the gut a price for the job, Ryan began the difficult job of removing the old motor. Years ago the starters were easy to find and replace, but the advent of the computer designed cars, the manufacturers can squeeze parts onto an engine where

jeep, starter motor, and battery

New and old Jeep starters side by side

they previously could not. This Jeep was no exception and the starter was tucked away in nowhere land and very difficult to remove, right up the back of the engine, certainly not a job for the DIY car repairer, on his back on the drive at home.

The new part arrived and was fitted back in the engine by Ryan. The problem was that the teeth on the old motor were worn away, and were not connecting with the flywheel. Sometimes we find that there is an electrical fault, but not in this case. The old starter was sent back to the supplier and then returned to the company that will recondition the starter to repeat the cycle again when the next Jeep start motor goes wrong.

We normally carry out the following tests to ascertain whether or not a new starter motor  is required.

A- We always test the battery first. This is by using a simple multi-meter test.

B- We will check that the starter motor is getting 12 Volts on to its Battery Circuit.

C- We always check that the starter motor is receiving the electrical current from the ignition switch.

D- We carry out a voltage drop test on the starter battery and ground Circuits. We do this using a 12 volt battery and a connecting wire to test whether or not the starter is engaging or not. We test this in a vice on the bench.

Varta Motorcycle Batteries-“Powersport” and “Funstart” Motorcycle batteries are some of the Best.

Varta Motorcycle Batteries produce an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) technology battery for Motorcycles.

Varta  are made by the excellent Johnson Controls the largest battery company in the World. We all know what can happen if a motor cyclist loses control of his bike, it can be serious. Also most bikes are fitted with normal free flow lead acid batteries, which as we know can spill out the acid when the battery is tipped over.Varta Motorcycle Batteries

Car companies such as Mazda have been fitting AGM types into their cars for a while now, especially ones that fit inside the car and under the seat. This is of course for safety purposes, so in the case of an accident the battery will not spill out the battery acid, which could make the accident even worse if the acid leaks onto the driver who may be trapped inside the cab.

11332-Varta News March 08

Varta Motorcycle Batteries have brought out the “powersports” range of AGM’s , which are also suitable for other powersport vehicles, such as “jet-skis” or motorcycle scrambling and other racing bikes. These provide maximum starting power and longer charge and discharge times. These  are also totally sealed and if an unfortunate event should occur, then there would be no battery acid spillage as the battery is filled with absorbed glass matting and not free flow acid. Below is a list of other benefits from fitting an AGM battery to your motorcycle.

Varta Motorcycle Batteries Battery Terminal Construction

Robust fitment to reduce corrosion and prevent acid leakage, ensuring your battery lasts longer.

Cell Connectors

The connectors join the individual battery cells together, via the plate block, creating a shorter energy path and increasing starting power.

Extra-Strong Casing and Cover Material

Special oil-resistant plastic moulded to remain stable in extreme temperatures.

Specialised Grid Design

Created for optimum conductivity; and high resistance to vibration ; essential when you’re riding off-road.

Varta Motorcycle Batteries “Funstart Batteries”

This is another development from Varta Car Batteries Online and enables a normal lead acid motorcycle battery to be turned into a GEL battery. I have added a video from Varta, that explains how to use this excellent battery product, these batteries are known as “Funstart”. We also supply Varta Motorcycle Batteries

Car batteries Care-Caring for your batteries during the winter months

Car batteries Care

Car batteries Care during the winter months

The Rome Observer

(METRO) — Few things can be more frustrating than jumping into the driver’s seat on a frosty morning, turning the key in the ignition and failing to hear the engine roar to life.

Car batteries Care-Why do your Car Batteries fail in the Winter?

As silly as it may seem many drivers hardly use their cars. Hence, in the winter months. Indeed some drivers lock the cars away in the garage, (if they have one).

car batteries

This is where most scrap car batteries end up? but 95% of them are recycled a great achievement?

Nothing can be more stressful. As a result trying to start your car on a cold winters morning. Therefore, only to find that your car wont start. Of course, it is one of the saddest sounds that you as a driver will hear. When the battery just makes a slow grinding noise. Hence, made by the starter motor. As it tries to start up your car. Normally the engine just zips up. Hence, at the turn of the key and off you go. So but not this morning, it’s frosty and -2 C or bellow. Therefore, the car will not start up.

This is the scenario .That thousands of motorists a day will experience. Of course, a bit of knowledge goes a long way. Setting out a few facts can help the motorist understand. Consequently, a little more about their 12 Volt Battery car batteries. Including, how they respond to the climate. The two extremes of weather conditions, the cold and the heat will affect your car batteries performance.

Here in the UK we rarely experience excess heat, so I will concentrate on the cold.

In cold weather the chemical action in the battery will be slowed down and I have actually seen the battery liquid (sulphuric acid) frozen solid.

Car batteries Care-The corrosion on this battery must be removed

off keeping your car in a garage if possible, either in really cold weather or overnight. What happens is that although it may be cold in the garage, the heat from the engine when the car was run the day before, will act as a heater for the battery as the engine compartment will still retain the heat.

If the battery is over five years old then it should be replaced with a new battery, most car batteries will fail after the five year period, and this is what we have found over the years, also imported cars from the Far Eastern countries such as Japan, China and South Korea are imported with batteries that are lower specifications that the ones made for the European market, these batteries do not stand up to the cold weather and usually fail early on in the cars life.

The best thing that drivers can do is to have their car battery checked before the onset of winter and replace It if necessary, but in really severe cold as experienced in the USA recently, then the battery could still fail without further protection from the cold.

Car batteries Care-A few things to look out for when buying your new battery.

Make sure that it is the correct battery for the car and has the same power, the same number of amps and cold cranking amps. It will be all right to go bigger if it will fit the cars battery compartment as long as the battery has the same voltage, usually 12volts and 6volts on classic cars and vintage cars.

Here are a few more tips if the weather forecast is for really cold conditions. You can use a battery blanket, to cover the battery and stop it freezing. You could also use a trickle charger, because the battery will retain some heat as the battery is been charged up, and stop it from freezing. If your car is stored in the garage for a period of time then disconnect the battery and try to keep it on a trickle charger when the battery is in storage, you can buy cheap intelligent chargers now that will do this job.

Car Battery Check-Make sure that your family are safe by checking your CAR BATTERY before a journey

Car Battery Check

Make sure that your family are safe with a Car Battery CheckCar Battery Check

On a recent visit to France, we unfortunately broke down due to an electrical fault on our Peugeot van. Just by a coincidence another English vehicle in a few car spaces near to us was also broke down, this vehicle was a Citroen C4 Picasso people carrier, and was occupied by a family of six , four children and their parents.

I went over to the guy, who was looking under the bonnet (hood) of his car, and asked him what had gone wrong. He told that the orange alternator light had come on, but he carried on and did not suspect that the light would cause a problem. He went on to tell me that he had suspected that the car may have had a dodgy battery for a few weeks, but he just kept on charging it up because he did not use the people carrier very often, in fact he only used the car for family outings and visits to the sea side.

I told him that I was in the Car battery business and suspected that a Car Battery Check would do the trick I am amazed at the number of drivers that I come across who are hell bent on trying to keep a dead battery alive, by constantly trying to charge up their old, and probably dead battery up, trying to keep the thing alive. Most drivers fail and eventually give up their dead battery and go out to have a professional Car Battery Check before buying  buy a new one.

Car Battery Check

We were both members of the AA, a British breakdown organisation, that covers the whole of Europe, and sure enough a breakdown truck arrived to attend to the guy with the people carrier. The system in France only allows the AA Recovery to attend a breakdown on the road side or hard shoulder of a motorway.

This is French law and I think it has something to do with protecting the livelihood of the French garage trade, something that the French are good at, protectionism. The English guy did have a Car Battery Check and needed a new  12 Volt Battery. The battery on the vehicle was a common size, known to us as a 096. These batteries cost about £60 here in the UK, but the driver got a shock when the new battery cost him 140 Euros.

His breakdown cover may not have covered him for what we call renewable s, so the lesson there is do not mess about trying to resurrect your old car battery,

just go and buy a new one. The whole experience of breaking down would have put a lot of pressure on his family, not knowing if they would not reach their holiday destination or not, just for the sake of a Car Battery Check before starting off on a journey.

car battery check

A car battery chack would have picked up the poor condition of this car battery. This is an example of a car battery that needs a really good clean

Car Battery Check

My wife and I have had eight children together over the past 35 years and have traveled extensively all over Europe. We have broken down a couple of times in our people carriers and so we know about the pressure that breaking down can put on the whole family. It is not worth the hassle and stress, just because you did not prepare your car and had a not knowing if they would not reach their holiday destination or not, just for the sake of a Car Battery Check before starting off on a journey.

Where do Waste Batteries go to die?

St. George Daily Spectrum

Batteries are essential to our daily lives. They are everywhere — in our cell phones, lap tops, iPods, kitchen appliances and garden tools.

eric roberts‘s insight:

95% of waste batteries are recycled.

Most of the Waste Batteries that are removed from our cars and trucks are collected by scrap dealers and then they are sent to be Waste and Recycling to a waste battery

Waste Batteries, failing a battery for the re-cycling bin

failing a battery for the Waste Batteries bin

re-processing plant such as the one used by Exide Batteries.

Waste Batteries

Lead acid Waste Batteries are one of the success stories in the world of re-cycling. Over 95% of the old car, truck and tractor batteries are sent to be re-made into new battery products. Almost all black coloured batteries are made from re-cycling old Waste Batteries a very worthy record.

The complete battery starts out at one end of the process and ends up at the other end as part of a new battery. Even the plastic is broken up into very small pieces and then mixed with new material before been made into a new battery casing. These re-cycled casings (battery boxes) are always made into black batteries because of the mixture of colours, any white or opaque coloured 12 Volt Battery has been made from new materials and therefor has not been re-cycled.

In my opinion this is great news, and makes the lead acid Waste Batteries  greener than people think, which is more than we can say about the lithium-Ion batteries . The lithium-ion battery has not in my opinion stood the test of time regarding both safety and the potential for them to be re-cycled. There is some news though that the lithium-ion batteries that are on the electric cars at the moment, could be used for storing solar energy in a domestic situation.

VARTA BLACK dynamic C14 Car batteries-BatteriesOnTheWeb-Motorcycle …

VARTA BLACK

VARTA BLACK dynamic c14 Car Batteries with entry levels of electrical equipment may need less battery power, but they still demand superior starting, consistent performance and absolute reliability. And that’s exactly what you get with …

eric roberts‘s insight:

Varta batteries have always been outstanding quality .

We at batteriesontheweb.co.uk are VARTA BLACK stockists for the West Yorkshire area of the UK, and can offer a full range of car and motorcycle batteries to fit most cars, here in the UK.

VARTA BLACK batteries as we all probably know by now, are owned by the world’s largest battery company Johnson Controls. Johnsons have always maintained that the Varta brand is their premier brand and so it came as no surprise when they announced that the new generation of Start-Stop batteries will be made as the top brand.

It is expected that by 2018 the majority of new vehicles will be using Star-Stop technology and so Johnson Controls have devised a dealer service programme to train the technicians at the fitting depots how to use their newly developed hand held electrical equipment to tell the on-board computer that they are fitting a new battery. The new style AGM batteries are part of the total computer system of the all-electric cars that are also charged by the braking system of the cars. The cars that are fitted with the Start-Stop battery system, but run with a conventional petrol/diesel engine can have the battery changed in much the normal way as fitting a  standard 12volt Car Battery.

The Varta batteries will be built in the companies Factory in Zwickau, Germany in a new million Euro plant that is the world’s largest producers of AGM batteries. The AGM batteries, (Absorbed Glass Matting) are a much more powerful battery, and will stand larger surges in deeper cycles and so are more suitable for constant Stop-Starting. The new extension to the factory is expected to produce 6.5 million batteries a year and this will double the number of employees at the factory.

Renault French automaker can cut off your battery if you don’t pay

Renault

Renault,battery

Post updated  22/3/2014 Eric Roberts

Last year Tesla dealt with its first real scandal, the so-called “bricking” of batteries that are allowed to run entirely out of charge. But what about a car company (Renault)that could brick a car’s battery on purpose?

eric roberts‘s insight:

Cutting off your car battery

This is known as “bricking” and stems from Renault keeping an eye on their customers who do not make a payment. This is allegedly in the small print under the French car companies “rented battery” agreement.

Renault battery

Renault servicing in Halifax Yorkshire UK

Also in the service agreement. It is alleged that Renault has the right to halt the possible charging of the battery. When the rental contract comes to an end. Apparently, this also includes the same penalties if you fail to make a payment. Thus, on your car agreement, making the car impossible to drive

I wonder what would happen. In the case of say a mess up with paperwork.Accordingly, if the payments from the bank may go wrong. Therefore, would Renault then cut off your battery supply. What a mess that would be to sort out. Hence, we all know that these large banks and credit companies do make mistakes. Naturally, you could be stranded anywhere and it would not be your fault?. The mind boggles.

A Recharging EV Batteries Industry Rises

Such public charging has an advantage over the 240-volt charger that a car owner can install in a garage or car port, said Michael D.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Recharging EV Batteries but EV batteries may not be here to stay?

It seems that Americans are throwing billions of dollars in the production of electric car, now they are expanding the car battery

charger market. In the article by the New York Times it explains the way that the USA is going towards in this direction.

I live in the North of the UK at it appears that we are miles behind in the establishment of Battery charging stations in our towns and cities. There is a website that shows EV drivers where their electric cars can be charged up, but to date I have only seen the Battery Charging Stations in the Cheshire city of Chester, where there are three of them in one spot, a local hotel.Recharging EV Batteries

We do have companies that manufacture charging stations; one of them is Schneider Electric’s EV Link fast charge stations…http://www.schneider-electric.co.uk/sites/uk/en/products-services/electrical-distribution/products-offer/ev-link-charging-solutions/electric-vehicle-fast-charging-infrastructures/ev-link-fast-charger.page   that can charge 80% of the Car Batteries in less than 30 minutes. These Recharging EV Batteries stations can be bought for home use or for use by businesses and the Electric Vehicles owners will be able to easily and safely charge their vehicles, without any risk of exceeding their supply contract and in the most environmental friendly manner.

The UK also has web site that shows electric car owners where to find the car  batteries charging points to recharge their cars batteries

the web site is http://www.nextgreencar.com/electric-cars/charging-points.php it also tells you other valuable information, such as the number of fast charging sites, it now states that we have 3035 fast charging sites in the UK, alright if you are near one?

The big problem here in the UK is that the public have not taken the electric car to their heart, they do not seem interested. According to the figures only just over 1000 cars were sold in the UK in year ending in October 2011 and figures for up to October 2012 were even worse at 950 cars, these figures are measly

In my opinion the bottom line is that it is too early just to go out and buy a so called green car because you care about the” greenhouse effect “on our planet. The reason being that there

are many new technologies that will be coming onto the market in the next few years that will not run solely on batteries , but use other mechanical methods to lower the emissions, the new technology that is coming out of Peugeot looks a good alternative and Toyota are looking into Nitrogen powered engines, so it will be very interesting to say the least.

Car Battery-Which choices-Your Guide to the Car Battery

Get valuable, relevant advice from the UK’s leading driver-focused road safety organisation (Your Car battery can die at any time of year but more likely when the cold temp hits the battery.

Your car battery

Like so many products these days, car batteries are better made than ever.  I am of coarse talking about the 12 Volt Battery that at the moment fit most of cars that are on our roads. The lead acid battery has been with us for many years now and has now developed into a reliable part of your cars electrical system.

Over the years we have noticed that the batteries fitted to Japanese cars seem to last the longest from new, usually about seven years before replacing. The batteries on car batteryFords and Vauxhall cars only last about three years before a replacement is required. I do not really know why this, I guess it must be something to do with the rest of the cars electrical system. The batteries that the cars are fitted with original equipment are usually of good quality. We know this because we can buy the same products from the battery manufacturer with different make labels.

For instance Johnson Controls, one of the World’s biggest  makers of the New Car Battery (if not the biggest) make batteries for the car manufacturers and for the replacement battery market, so unless they are told to make the batteries to a lower standard, the products should be the same quality. We buy batteries that are made by Yuasa, In 2004, Yuasa Japan merged with Japan Storage Battery to form GS Yuasa Corporation.

When we replace a Discount Car Battery from a car that has been made in the Far East almost every battery that we replace is either a “GS” battery or a “GLOBAL” battery and these batteries appear to last longer than their European counterparts, or is it the Far Eastern car makers that make their cars electrical systems better?. It please me though because the Tungstone batteries that we sell on Batteries OnThe Web.co.uk  are made by Global batteries and also Fiamm Car Batteries in Italy.
