Although we have been trying out new systems for storing the energy produced by the Sun there does not seem to be any major developments coming from the big energy players. Millions of individuals have been trying different methods out using all types of devices and different types of batteries

The most successful battery at the moment appears to be the AGM battery (Absorbed Glass Matting). This type of New batteries will dis-charge to much lower levels, than a normal New batterieswet lead acid battery, the type that is used in cars and trucks. But as we all strive to make renewable energy other methods have started to come to life. By the way one of the best AGM storage batteries on the market are made by Trojan batteries . They are a little more expensive than other makes but they are a heavy duty quality product and well worth looking at if you are interested in building a small bank of solar storage batteries.

A new kid on the block will shortly be the development of the Lithium-Ion solar storage unit. The idea has come from the development of the use of New batteries called Lithium-Ion batteries in the electric cars. These storage units will be tailor made as a thing that consumers can just buy and plug in to a solar panel system or a wind turbine. Solar power is now getting more popular, even here in the UK. You have only to drive around to see that many homes have now got solar panels on the roofs of their houses.

Many people are using solar energy. Hence, to bring down the cost of their energy bills. Or to use when out and about in their motor homes and R/V vehicles. Here in the UK. Particular, customers buy many what is known as“Leisure batteries”. Which are a sort of hybrid between a starter and a storage battery.

As I have said.These types of batteries are more than adequate for this usage. However, some people want to use Lead Acid Storage Batteries.Consequently, to store the electricity produced by turbines or solar panels. In my opinion this is a different proposition. Requiring, different batteries to the leisure batteries.So that are common here in the UK. Especially, a type of battery that should be used is the deep cycle battery. These Lead Acid Storage Batteries. Therefore, have much larger plates than the typical car and leisure battery. The other option is a GEL but in my opinion the GEL  is now going out of favour towards the AGM battery, one of the reasons is the cost of the batteries, AGM are cheaper than GEL  and are also easier to re-charge, more suitable for solar energy storage. Individuals have come up with great ideas to form their own electric Storage Batteries system using all types of batteries. In my opinion the best batteries to use are the AGM batteries that are made by Trojan and the America battery company.

These vehicles are not connected to the power grid and therefore require some kind of battery storage, for use at night time, when the sun goes down. These batteries cost more but will last a whole lot longer over time, like anything else in life “you get what you pay for”.

Based on the same technology, and because these batteries can be used in home use Tesla’s home battery costs should come down as well and make them much less expensive, and making them affordable to the other communities of the world who at the moment do not have electricity, countries like Africa, where whole villages still rely on kerosene lamps in the dark of night.

The way that we built our national power plants, in some cases over a hundred years, will have to change in the future to meet our needs for the production of solar energy and its Battery Storage systemsdistribution through our homes and solar collection farms and wind turbine installations.

These national grid plants were originally owned by the government in the first instances, but in recent times were privatized here in the UK by the Conservative government led by Margret Thatcher. These massive installations distributed power all over the country and were powered by coal. The power stations were located in coal mining areas of Yorkshire, where the coal was transported locally and the electricity was sent across the country on massive power line systems and then diverted into smaller sub-stations before distributed to homes and businesses, usually in an underground network.

Now with battery storage systems things are about to change

In recent times we have seen massive investment into the solar energy collecting market and the introduction of new technologies such as wind turbines that turn the winds energy into producing electricity. Most people will now have seen these giant turbines across the countryside of most countries. This new technology and the advances of battery storage systems will soon mean that things may have to change in the near future, for these nationalized electric companies as the end consumers start to install solar systems to their homes and businesses across the world.

The price of fitting a solar system to your roof has come down dramatically as these things have become mass produced and affordable, helping people reduce their electric bills. The only other problem has been that the power produced could not be stored until recent years when battery storage systems have become widely available and easily installed using a few simple instructions.

This is of great benefit to consumers who live in the country or in larger countries the “wilderness” who are now able to make the production of electricity and store it for night use when the sun goes down. This can also lower the cost of energy which has gradually become one of the most expensive household items in recent years.

I have electricity collecting panels on my roof and sell the electricity back to my provider, thus reducing my electric bills by half. Here in the UK we are limited to the number of panels to one roof and I don’t think that we are allowed to go self-sufficient by producing all our own electricity, but some countries are different, such as the USA, where consumers can go their own way.

In many people’s opinions the day is not too far away when our roof panels will generate electricity which will be stored in a battery storage system. The householder will own an electric car and along with powering the rest of the house, the battery bank will also charge your car battery at night time, totally self-sufficient in electric power.

As I have said this is a perfect scenario for the perfect little houses in a perfect little village, but what about the rest of the population who live in multiple units and don’t even have their own roofs. Could we be looking at communal units of solar panels and storing the electricity in a battery bank, or is that a dream?

Perhaps not, because I have heard of some island communities, who have become self-sufficient by using this method. The batteries are packed into a 20 ft cargo container and the Battery Storage systems will store electricity to be used at night. This also eliminated power failures due storms and broken cables causing outages. The sun reliant system was fitted using up-to-date technology and now works perfectly leaving the island self-sufficient, by using the suns energy and storing it in batteries.

My interest in all this is that I sell batteries and I am very interested in the whole sun collecting  project. I cannot see the end in the national grid model, but alterations are going to have to be made in future to accommodate the public’s wishes to produce their own electric power from their own premises. Neither do we know what new technologies for collecting the suns power, will be available to us in the future, new ideas are coming along all the time.

There is one thing for sure that governments are going to have to give this problem some thought for the future of how we use the power of our sun in years to come.

article about the growing threat that is coming from the huge increase in solar panel use and the growth of Solar City the country’s largest installer of PV solar panels, combined with the ambitions of American car maker Tesla Motors, who’s intentions are to build a massive battery building plant, to help bring down the cost of building the car batteries that are used to power their electric cars.

It is now thought that these types of Solar Batteries can also be used to store the power that is produced by the solar panels. This type of system is used at the moment by thousands of homes in America, especially in remote areas where it is not possible to connect to the national electricity grid that we use in built-up areas.in our cities and towns.

The national grid has been supplying homes and industries with electricity now for more than a century and in my opinion are now becoming under threat from the joint efforts of these two fast growing energy providers and energy storage companies, Tesla cars and Solar-City. The two companies have used the Lithium-Ion batteries on trial in California, for general usage and soon realised that this was going to be of great use by integrating it into the Grid.

Here in the UK, most solar panels do not store the electricity in solar batteries but use an inverter to change the DC power that is produced by the solar panels, into AC power that is used by the national grid system. The electricity passes through a meter and the electric company buy the electricity from the home producer. If this is the case here in the UK, then I see no problem with a similar system in the States, especially for town and city dwellers.

 

The possibility of huge amounts of electricity being produced in the future opens up other arguments, such as why should we build more fossil fuel power plants or indeed nuclear, when it will be possible to store the electricity in massive battery storage plants. Surely we are swiftly approaching the time for all the parties involved to get their heads together and smell the coffee.

It does not take much figuring out, that here am I on a sunny march day watching my solar panels meter clicking over and reducing my electric bill, times this by millions and the income of the utility companies will collapse. This is only possible because of the technology that is speeding along at the rate of knots.

This brought me to my earlier thought. Here in the UK, we do use solar panels, but we have limited amount of actual sun power, because of the tilt of the Earth the sun is very low in winter and therefore not at the right angle to supply rooftop solar panels with enough energy. The spring and summertime are fine and we can get the regular strong sun to make solar panels a viable proposition.

To me, this would be a great challenge for the European Union. It is not rocket science to see that the Southern European countries have much more sunshine hours than the richer

Northern Hemisphere countries such as Germany and the UK. Therefore would it not make economic sense for the Southern countries to produce the electricity from giant banks of solar panels, such as the ones in the deserts of America and the Northern countries,It is now thought that these types of Solar Batteries can also be used to store the power that is produced by the solar panels. could store the surplus for use in winter time, by using the battery technology from out of America. The countries such as Greece, Spain and Portugal not forgetting Italy, would produce the energy and sell it to the North. This is done at the moment here in the UK, as we buy some of our electricity from the nuclear power stations in France.

The USA Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has come out with a statement that I have been talking about for a couple of years now. In this article, he says that the USA could start to be getting independent of the national energy providers if the growth in solar Renewable Energy and other renewable resources can keep growing at the present rate.

In my opinion, the public in America and other continents such as here in the Uk, have really grasped the nettle as far as going it alone with solar energy. The solar panels in this picture are situated in a small town in West Yorkshire UK and start producing energy from the Sun as early as February. The electricity that is produced by these solar panels is sent straight to the electricity grid through a reverse meter and the electric company pays the house owner for the electricity that is provided.

In America there is a growing trend to store the electricity that is collected from the panels into banks of Solar Energy Batteries, this is also useful in rural and more isolated areas, where the batteries can store the electricity for use at night by the house owners.

The most effective type of Solar Energy Batteries to use is AGM batteries. These AGM batteries will cost more in the first instance but will give better service due to the ability to have much greater charge and discharge cycles than say a normal lead-acid Car Batteries.

There are many DIY videos available to show householders how to set up a Solar Energy Batteries system and one of them is Trojan AGM Battery. These batteries are very suited for the use with solar energy and anyone thinking of doing this should look at the Trojan AGM product.

Another New Type of  Battery for solar energy  Hits the Road

Mount Pleasant in Pennsylvania will be the site for the production of yet another new type of battery. The company will be known as Aquion Energy and will start producing a new type of battery that was invented by professor J Whitacre from the material science department of the Carnegie Mellon University.

These new type of battery is expected to cost about the same to produce as lead-acid ones that are in common use today for a multitude of applications, but are expected to last

twice as long. They  will be primarily used for the storage of the suns power generated from Solar Panels for Electricity and  Turbines, offering a storage facility for homes in rural and isolated areas that use the off grid powered by the sun, which  supplies and require storage for night use and bad weather when the sun is not available. At the moment these people use different types of lead-acid ones and fossil fueled engines powered by diesel as standby supplies when the sun does not shine for whatever reasons.

For the reasons that I have explained this new type of battery is expected to be used in countries that do not have an electric grid, but are expected to get electricity in the near future and because this new type of battery will be available for storage, then these countries will save a huge amount of money by running diesel generators when the sun does not shine and at night. I am sure that Africa will be one of the first places to benefit from such inventions.

The new company have also used ingenious ways of saving money during the manufacturing process of the new batteries, using machines that were originally used for making aspirin pills to make the thin plates used to make the positive and negative electrode materials. They also use parts from a sweet wrapping machine to pack the electrodes together to collect current.

The company expects to start full scale production in early 2014 and hopes to make enough batteries to supply 150 solar powered villages.
