Lithium-Ion batteries may shortly be used on regular truck batteries

There is not a day goes by without a new story that relates to new battery technology. This story is no exception.

Lockheed Martin the defence contractors have chosen French company SAFT, who are great innovators in the battery industry, to configure one of their batteries, the e6T lithium-Ion battery system for use on certain military vehicles above the use of the traditional lead-acid batteries.

The advantages of using Lithium-Ion batteries, is that they are lighter in weight than a lead-acid battery and the same size, thus making the new type of batteries able to fit into the same truck  batteries compartments without having to do a re-design. The battery is a 25.5 volt capacity and is able to carry out many modern functions such as charging personal items of electronics that the troops will be using, the likes of GPS devices and night site technologies apart from the normal tasks such as starting and lighting duties.

Calstart who are a Worldwide organisation dedicated to implementation of using technology for cleaner transport by reducing our reliance on oil and producing cleaner air, with less CO2 emissions say that if these trials are a success there will no reason why the new batteries will be able to be used on regular trucks, using a 12 volt system. These batteries will last much longer due to a longer life cycle than the 12 Volt Battery, whilst giving a greater depth of charge, with a fast re-charges, giving a saving on the fuel costs. One that has not been mentioned is the cost of these batteries; this is what will eventually drive any changes in design and technology forward, and only time will tell.
