Car Brakes Rule The Day

As many of my readers will know then Saturday is my favorite day of the week. So the rest of my week is spent working on my computer trying to figure out the best way to please Google and rank my business websites. I have a one man mission to conquer this. So with the help of Yoast, I soldier on.

This Saturday was to be a very busy one. It is the middle of November and our customers are preparing their cars for the Christmas break. Of course this has been helped by the short spell of colder weather. Exciting days for us when the cars roll in desperate for a new car battery to replace the one thats on its way out.

Car batteries to start the day

Of course we are happy to oblige them? My staff have a new toy? Its a great little new battery tester. Naturally, our new battery tester tells the customer that he needs a new battery by giving him a print out. Print outs seem to be what people want. In fact all our electronic testers including our 4 wheel alignment gauges will give out a printout for the customer to see.

Our first two cars that pulled in were in fact to test batteries. Consequently, they both failed and new car batteries were fitted. Also the last car in this particular Saturday was a for a battery fitting on a VW Polo. The car had an 063 fitted as original equipment. In this case we always replace the battery with the one fitted on as the original. We offered the lady one of our own brand Apollo Premium 063 batteries. She was pleased with the price and the battery was fitted.

Brakes take over?

However it was soon to become apparent, when the next three cars that came in all had some sort of brake problems. Saturday, can become difficult with brake problems. Because, not all brake parts are available from our local parts people. Any how this time we were in luck and the brake parts were available for all the cars that came in on this particular day.

Vauxhall Corsa with brake caliper problem

The first car was a young lady in a Corsa D 2007 1.2. She went on to tell us that the the car was bought about a year ago. Of course, she went on to tell us that

Vuaxhall Vectra badly worn discs that needed replacing

the Corsa behaves erratically when braking. Any time I step on the brake pedal, the car will pull towards the right side. So pulling into the centre of the road. Very scary! However it eventually straightens itself up.

Alex went on a short road test. On his return it decided that he needed to remove the wheels. But suspected a seized brake caliper was likely to be the culprit. Sure enough the brakes were visually inspected and both calipers were not working freely. One was worse than the other causing the Corsa to pull into the centre of the road when braking. Alex was able to free one side but the other required a new brake caliper.

Vauxhall Vectra B with noisy brakes

Following just behind the Corsa was a guy with a Vectra brake problem. This was also to be an easy diagnosis. Consequently, the guy had fitted a set of his own pads in preparation for its pending MOT Test. Subsequently, the car had passed the test but had developed the dreaded grinding noise. Grinding must rate up there as the most common brakes fault.

Worn out brake discs and pads

Once again we had an incline as  to what the problem was going to be. John, one of my mechanics removed the front wheel to examine the discs and pads. Sure enough the guy had fitted new pads but had fitted them onto badly worn discs. So unless the discs are in really good condition then we always change the discs and pads. Because the guy was waiting for his car we showed him his error.

After fitting new discs the brakes were rebuilt and road tested. of course everything was fine and the guy went off a happy customer. Hence, the next two brake jobs were simple discs and pads and the cars offered us with no major challenges. Just what we want on a Saturday. Everything was straight forward.
