So, as I have said many times ! then we feel privileged to be able to service and repair such a diverse and varied number of car makes and models. Including cars from the BMW range.

This particular day as to be no different ! consequently, cars across the whole spectrum were booked in for repairs and services. Not forgetting MOT tests of course. One of the days jobs was a BMW that was suffering from its ABS (anti lock braking system) causing problems. So, the ABS system works by monitoring all the four wheel speeds . When the brakes are applied the system looks to see if any of the wheel are rotating at a lower speed than any of the other wheels.

This would then indicate that a wheel could be about to lock up. Alas, if there was of the wheels going at a higher speed than the other three then the brake would receive extra pressure to reduce the slip. So, the problem with this car was that the ABS was kicking in at low speed. not all the time but it annoyed the customer.

We placed the car on a ramp and endevoured to find the fault. Removing the wheels we were able to access the brake and inspect the drive shafts. So, on examination Ryan discovered that the drive shafts had corroded. Thus causing the target rings to swell and go out of shape. Consequently, the target rings had also damaged the ABS sensors.

We notified the BMW owner, who gave us permission to go ahead and repair his car. This is a good practice that I think most modern Autocentres now carry out. Gone are the days when the customer was presented with a massive repair bill. In my opinion this is best practice and both the garage and the customer know where they stand.

To repair the car ABS problems, we fitted new drive shafts and associated sensors. Of course we were confident that this would solve the problem ! and so it duly did.
