From Campervans to Toyota Yaris – You Never Know What Will Turn Up at Pellon Tyres
One of the things I have always enjoyed about running Pellon Tyre and Autocentre is the variety of vehicles that come through our workshop doors.
Some days seem to have a theme all of their own.
Recently, we had a visitor touring the Halifax area in a campervan based on a Vauxhall Vivaro CDTi. The owner was concerned about poor braking performance on the steep Yorkshire hills around Halifax and Calderdale. Ethan carried out an inspection and discovered that the campervan required new brake discs and brake pads.
The repairs were completed, and the owner was soon back on the road enjoying his visit to local attractions such as the famous Piece Hall.
What was interesting was that on the very same day another customer arrived with a brake problem.
This time the vehicle was a lovely blue Toyota Yaris.
The customer called into the depot because the brakes were making squealing noises and the brake pedal felt slightly spongy. Like many motorists, they were understandably concerned and wanted the problem checked before it became something more serious.
Fortunately, one of the advantages of being a long-established independent garage is that we try our best to accommodate walk-in customers whenever possible.
After a short wait in reception, Connor drove the Yaris onto one of our ramps and carried out a thorough brake inspection.
Thankfully, there was nothing too dramatic.
The brake discs and brake pads had simply reached the end of their useful life and needed replacing.
The necessary work was completed, and the customer drove away delighted, not only with the quality of the repair but also with the price.

Every Day Is Different: Toyota Yaris for Discs and Pads
That particular day perfectly summed up life at Pellon Tyres.
Within the space of a few hours we had dealt with a campervan and a Toyota Yaris, two completely different vehicles with remarkably similar problems.
That is one of the reasons why no two days are ever the same.
On any given day we may see the following:
- Family hatchbacks
- Small city cars
- Vans
- Motorhomes
- Electric vehicles
- SUVs
- Performance cars
- Taxis
- Classic cars
Sometimes we can have three BMWs arrive with completely different faults. Other days we may not see a BMW at all but instead have a workshop full of Fords, Toyotas and Volkswagens.
It keeps the job interesting.

The Success Story of the Toyota Yaris
The Toyota Yaris has become one of Britain’s most popular small cars.
Originally introduced in the late 1990s, the Yaris quickly gained a reputation for reliability, low running costs and excellent fuel economy.
Toyota designed the vehicle to appeal to motorists who wanted dependable transport without excessive maintenance costs.
Over the years the Yaris has evolved considerably.
Modern versions feature the following:
- Advanced safety systems
- Hybrid technology
- Improved fuel economy
- Better comfort levels
- Modern infotainment systems
Despite all these improvements, the Yaris has retained the qualities that made it successful in the first place.
It is practical, economical and dependable.
Many Yaris owners keep their vehicles for years because they are simply so reliable.

Modern Brake Systems Have Changed: Toyota Yaris for Discs and Pads
Whilst the basic principle of stopping a vehicle remains unchanged, modern braking systems have become increasingly sophisticated.
Years ago, brake systems were relatively simple.
Today’s vehicles are equipped with:
- Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS)
- Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
- Emergency Brake Assist
- Traction Control Systems
- Stability Control Systems
All of these features work together to improve safety.
However, even with all this technology, the brake discs and brake pads remain consumable components.
Eventually they wear out and require replacement.
Why Brakes Begin to Squeal
Brake squeal is one of the most common complaints we hear from customers.
There are several possible causes.
These include:
- Worn brake pads
- Glazed brake surfaces
- Corrosion
- Contaminated brake components
- Brake pads reaching their wear indicators
In many cases, a squealing brake is simply the vehicle’s way of warning the driver that maintenance is required.
Ignoring the warning can lead to more expensive repairs later.
Why Brake Pedals Can Feel Spongy: Toyota Yaris for Discs and Pads
A spongy brake pedal is another symptom that should never be ignored.
Possible causes include:
- Worn brake components
- Air within the brake system
- Deteriorated brake fluid
- Brake hydraulic problems
Fortunately, in the case of the Toyota Yaris, the issue was straightforward and easily resolved.
Looking After Walk-In Customers
One thing that many customers appreciate about Pellon Tyres is that we always try to help people when they call in unexpectedly.
Obviously, there are times when the workshop is fully booked and we cannot immediately carry out repairs.
However, we always try to inspect the vehicle and determine whether the problem is urgent.
Sometimes a quick inspection can provide enormous peace of mind.
Many customers simply want reassurance that their vehicle is safe to drive.
If we can help, we will.
That has always been our philosophy.
Why Regular Brake Checks Matter: Toyota Yaris for Discs and Pads
The campervan and Toyota Yaris highlighted an important point.
Neither customer had suffered a complete brake failure.
Instead, they noticed small warning signs and acted before the problem became serious.
That is exactly what we encourage motorists to do.
If you notice:
- Squealing brakes
- Grinding noises
- Vibration when braking
- A spongy brake pedal
- Increased stopping distances
Then it is sensible to have the vehicle checked as soon as possible.
A simple inspection today can often prevent a much larger repair bill tomorrow.
Helping Halifax Motorists Stay Safe
After nearly fifty years in business, one thing remains constant.
People rely on their vehicles every day.
Whether it is a visitor touring Yorkshire in a campervan or a local driver using a Toyota Yaris to commute around Halifax, everyone expects their brakes to work properly.
At Pellon Tyre and Autocentre, our job is to help keep those vehicles safe and reliable.
And as the campervan owner and Toyota Yaris driver discovered, sometimes all it takes is a quick inspection, a professional diagnosis and a quality repair to get motorists safely back on the road.
