Hybrid Car Servicing

Hybrid Car Servicing

Of course, some people think that the “Hybrid Cars” have an edge over conventional cars. Therefore more expensive than the latter. Unlike normal cars, hybrid cars do not need much maintenance or their need some of their components changing?

Because of the many advantages. Thus, over conventional cars, hybrid Cars have gained a lot of popularity in a very short period of time. Hybrid Cars, as the name suggests. Function on a unique combination of a gas-powered internal combustion engine. Including, the clean energy of an electric motor.

While most hybrid cars make use of petrol. So there are some hybrid car models that use alternative fuels. Hence, such as diesel, ethanol alcohol, and fuel derived from plant materials.

Hybrid Car Servicing

Like standard petrol engined cars, then hybrid models have different characteristics and different parts.  One of the Ford hybrid models has a special air filter. This is for the battery pack cooling system. As a result the battery filter is located at the rear edge of the drivers side cargo area side glass. This filter should be replaced every 10,000 miles. Some models have different filter changing times but this will be in the service manual.

The fuel engine of a hybrid car requires similar maintenance as required by the engine of a normal car. Depending on the type of hybrid you have, oil changes should be made every 5,000-10,000 miles. Another benefit of the hybrid car is that owing to the regenerative brake system.

So the brake pads in hybrids last longer than those of an ordinary car. Because, they do not wear out easily, then the pads last longer and do not need changing as much as a normal car.

Another likeable part of the hybrid is that Unlike other electric cars. Then you need not have to plug in to the mains to recharge the batteries. Because the electric motor of the hybrid acts as a generator when the car is cruising or when brakes are applied. Bear in mind that the longevity of a battery extends considerably if the battery is never fully charged or completely drained.

Hybrid Car Servicing

Unlike normal cars, hybrid cars need less maintenance. Especially on their component parts. Suitable warranties are offered on battery packs, Including, emission parts of a hybrid car by most car dealers. Therefore, you can get the servicing done by professional mechanics at your local autocentre. So at a reasonable cost.

Thus, contrary to the common belief, hybrid cars need less maintenance than your standard petrol engined model. However due to modern design and engineering breakthrough’. Then all car whatever type they are require less maintenance. This seams to be great for the DIY motorists. But the drawback is the expensive equipment that is required to reset the computers and service and diagnostic lights.

Fortunately, for the small and medium garage sector, then we do keep up with ever changing need for new diagnostic tools and equipment. The only grey area that I can see is the battery problem? the petrol engine has a small lead acid battery to operate the lighting systems and other accessories. Of course this is because of the cost. A Li-On battery would be treble the price of a similar lead acid battery. Times this by millions of cars produced and theirs the answer.

Hybrid Car Servicing

The lead acid that is most commonly used is the 054 part number. The main drive battery is a different animal? Some companies allow the customer to lease the battery. However this has its drawbacks? as a result the driver could be tied into a contract for about three years. I believe the cost to be about an extra £60 to £70  a month on top of the cost of the car.

Also the Li-On battery could be bought out-rite for just under the £5,000 mark.

The threat of abolishing the petrol and diesel engined cars, will only strengthen our resolve to learn and to carry on fighting for our rights to repair these vehicles. As a result the small garage industry will learn and equip ourselves in order to serve the public.

Hence in a fair and squire manner by not ripping off the public. As some other sectors of the garage industry have done in the past. Especially when new technology comes along.

Varta Batteries Driven BMW…All Electric of 1972 – Top Gear

Varta Batteries Driven BMW

Varta Batteries Driven BMW powered 1602e was BMW’s first EV, and grand-daddy to the i8. Here’s its strange story

This was a surprise to me when i read about it?

So, I knew that battery driven cars are nothing new. But have never heard of BMW getting involved, and using Varta Batteries . Of course scientists are now developing the electric cars . Driven by a different type of battery. But, BMW apparently used the only technology available! The good old lead acid battery and Varta ones to boot.

Electric cars driven by batteries are nothing new?

Consequently, many car manufacturers have tried to produce the electric cars. Going back to the 1800’s. One of the efforts came from Ferdinand Porsche, the guy who started the Porsche car company.

So, he developed an electric car known as the P1 as far back as 1898. Consequently, he also developed what could have been the first hybrid in the world a car that was powered by a gasoline engine and a battery.

Thomas Edison also thought that electric cars were going to be the future and was always trying to improve a better batter to drive cars. Edison teamed up with Henry Ford to try to create lower cost electricity. Bur it was Ford who scuppered Edison’s plans by bringing out the model T, which would run on a petrol engine and not battery driven.

The cost of the cars driven on a gas engine was half the price of a battery driven model.

The gas engine cars out sold the battery cars and this was amplified even more when the starter motor was invented and it became far easier to start a car by pressing a button, than by hand cranking the engine to start the car.

Petrol became more popular! As oil was discovered in more and more of the American States. This meant that the new roads that were been built. Of course, all across the States and were serviced by petrol filling stations . All across the country! Giving the gas powered engine an even bigger advantage to the consumers. Who were buying these more affordable cars in droves. A new freedom had arisen ! People were wanting to explore the new road networks that were opening up all over America.

Petrol shortages spark interest in  electric vehicles driven by batteries

Nothing much happened in battery development for years. Bringing me up to the time when I became interested in cars. Working as an apprentice mechanic.Of course, here in Yorkshire UK, my home county.

The 1960’s and 1970’s the world was shook by the Arab Oil Embargo (1973). Which worried the USA about importing oil. So, in 1976 they passed a law authorising the development of battery driven electric and hybrid vehicles. Specifically, nothing new here, what goes round comes round?

General motors developed an urban electric car, in 1973

So, the American Motor company developed an electric battery driven jeep. To be used by the American post office in 1975. Of course, things were starting to move . But the problem of distance traveled on one charge, was rearing its ugly head. The same old problem that we are getting in today’s Lithium-Ion battery power trains.

Interest in the electric car then slowed down. Significantly, there were no further developments to name. As a result, regarding battery powered cars. That was until the 1990’s came along and the desire for cleaner air and pollution controls, Increased the interest once again, about developing the battery driven electric car.

Governments were introducing clean air acts and implementing emission controls on the car manufacturers. Unknown to the public which includes myself, governments were throwing billions of dollars in the surge to develop a better battery that would drive the electric vehicle of the near future. Oil prices were rising after the relatively cheap price of gasoline in the 1990,s and a similar scenario to the 1970’s was now emerging.

The world needed electric cars powered by batteries again

The race was on between the huge car companies in different parts of the world. Toyota of Japan was the first car maker to make big inroads. Into the electric car and hybrid car developments. In 1997 they introduced the Prius. Which became the first mass produced hybrid car. So, a car with a petrol engine and a battery train. This to me is still the better option than the elusive all battery driven car. Toyota used a nickel metal hydride battery to power the Prius. So, as I stated earlier the gas prices were starting to rise, which made this car a very popular choice for consumers.

Honda had also produced their new hybrid in 1999

Expressly, the developments after that are another story. This article gives my readers a little insight of a period. Hence, before the development of the new technology batteries. Such as the popular Lithium-Ion batteries, that scientists are still trying to perfect to this day.

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure- Batteries can give you as much as 150 Amps per hour?

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

LV22MF Numax leisure Batteries are amongst the best batteries available to the Caravan and Motorhome community, not forgetting the lucky people who own a river craft or a canal pleasure boat.

All these types of vehicles require a battery. Or a number of batteries to supply them with electricity.Especially, where there are no mains power points. Usually in the wilderness or some isolated canal boat moorings.

Numax are not necessarily Cheap Leisure Batteries. But they are one of the more reliable battery products. Of course, for this usage on the market. In fact I have only ever seen one faulty Numax battery. As a result, since I started selling then six years ago.

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

The Leisure market battery products are always on show. Hence, at some of the country’s top leisure and outdoor shows. Because of this the Numax name has become very popular. Also because of the internet, the Numax Caravan battery has actually come down in price. So, is now one of our best selling products that we offer online.

The most popular battery is the XV31MF battery. This is an 110 amp one and is our best seller at the time of me writing this article. The number two, Leisure Battery is the  LV26MF , which is a 100 amp battery.

Following close behind is the Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

This is a 75 amp battery and is used for the person who goes away at weekends and the occasional two weeks holiday. When the first Motorhome Battery came out, the industry used the regular car battery; in fact the 100 amp leisure battery was derived from the 250 car batteries. The car battery was modified with thicker calls to hold more charge and was then known as the LV26MF battery for leisure use. The original 250 car battery was a starter battery and had to provide the power up front to start a car.

As the leisure market began to grow, then so did the size of the caravans and motorhomes. This meant that bigger batteries were needed, because portable televisions and fridges could fit into the larger vehicles. In the early days these came in the form of truck batteries, which were the largest batteries available. This led to the development of the XV31MF leisure battery which once again had thicker plates to store more power, as the truck battery was a starter battery and needed the power up front to start the vehicle.

Leisure battery LV22MF Numax leisure

One thing that has surprised me is that more people do not connect 2 x LV22MF batteries together. These batteries are LV22MF Numax leisure Batteries and connected together in “Parallel” will give you a 75 x 2 capacity which is 150 amps, a much larger capacity than a XV31MF battery would. The main criteria is that you use the two exactly same leisure batteries and the same number of amps, the system will remain at 12 volts and in my opinion would be worth looking into.

Tyre Puncture Repairs-Are tyres really worth repairing ?

Tyre Puncture Repairs

Yes it is worth having Tyre Puncture Repairs

Many motorists go through life without having any Tyre Puncture Repairs. Thus, on their cars. Some of our customers are forever having punctures and their tyres

repaired. For this reason, the fact that they need new tyres fitting. Consequently, the reason that they have had a puncture. Is that their tyres have little tread left on them .

The tyres become “softer” when your tread is very low. Therefore, bald tyre will tend to pick up objects such as nails and screws. Thus, causing you to have a puncture. Having tyres with good tread. Of course, actually deflects objects located on the road. Of course, some drivers are just completely unlucky. Therefore, picking up objects. Even with a new tyre fitted. So this is in general and not very common. So as I say most Tyre Puncture Repairs are due to the car having bald tyres. Which can easily pick up nails and screws up from the road.

The common type Tyre Puncture Repairs

Punctures, that occurs in the tread area of a tyre is known as a “minor repair”. These are covered by http://www.btmauk.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Minor-repairs-to-passenger-car-and-light-van-tyres.pdf.Naturally, this sets out the reasons. Of course,  that a flat tyre can be repaired in the UK. The tyre to be repaired must be examined. Naturally, and can only be repaired under the following circumstances.

1 The tyre must have the legal tread depth 1.6 mm or above across the central ¾ of the tread around the full circumference of the tyre.

2 The tyre must be inspected for any run-flat damage or any damage to the tyres structure.

3 The tyre should no signs of secondary damage caused by the injury.

4 The tyre should show no signs of ageing, cracking on the bead area is usually a sign of ageing.

5 Look for signs of any bead damage.

6 Look out for any exposed cords protruding from the tyres casing.

7 Look out for any old repairs that may coming apart.

These points are pretty common sense things because Tyre Puncture Repairs that are not correctly repaired can cost lives. We at Pellon tyres will only repair a tyre twice and will only repair the tyre if it is a clear penetration. Many tyres on today’s cars are high speed and load rated and the customer should be notified if a puncture is not recommended for their type of car.

Run Flat tyre and puncture repairs this information from the tyre manufactures…

“With certain types of punctures in the tread area, the Bridgestone Run-Flat technology tyres may be repaired subject to certain conditions (Depending on how far and at what speed the car was driven after the puncture). Please consult your nearest RFT authorized dealer to have your tyres inspected.
Before attempting a repair, consult the vehicle owner’s manual for restrictions. The vehicle manufacturer may restrict the use of repaired tires on its vehicles”…Bridgestone Tyres

British Government MOT Mess

British Government MOT Mess

With all the extra work that Brexit is giving the Government. Then you would not think that they would have time. Hence to bother about changing good MOT testing legislation. Naturally, it is going to affect MOT garages as well as our customers. Therefore, all we can do is pray  that the big guns in the British auto industry start to fire. As a result warn off this idiosyncrasy of a new law. Thus that will be no good to anybody in the long run. We all know that tyre and mechanical parts wear out eventually. Of course usually before the three year first test is due.

So bringing this article forward to 2020. This proposal never really got off the ground. The UK will be coming out of the EU due to the massive majority for the Conservative party giving us Brexit. So, MOT testing will remain the same for the time being. Going forward again none of us can foresee what these crazy politicians could come up with. Consequently at the moment we are trying to tackle the “Corvid 19 virus” causing a world pandemic.

The Government are wanting to stretch this to four years?

Pirelli Winter Tyres- Pirelli recommend that UK motorists to fit “WINTER TYRES”

Pirelli Winter Tyres

SUV owners are especially vulnerable to snow and do need Pirelli Winter Tyres

Of course, I am convinced that the tyre trade are not targeting the young drivers. Especially when it comes to teaching about tyre safety. As the owner of Pellon Tyre in Halifax UK. I am finding it more common for young drivers, to be making tyre related mistakes. Naturally, that only slight observations would correct.
Including running on tyres that are completely bald and well over the legal limit. Many young drivers including married and single people. Consequently, do not appear to or just do not want know anything about the car. Especially the tyres?

This brings me back to winter tyres.

Any driver who fits winter tyres on a regular basis, knows how much safer it is to drive about in winter weather. Even in heavy rain, the driver will feel much safer, with a good set of winter tyre fitted to their car. You can handle anything that an British winter can throw at you.
Some of these young drivers are driving about without any tread on their summer tyre, never mind winter tyres. These drivers are also the ones that take the risks on bends and speeding on our roads. This combined with bald tyres is a recipe for a disaster. Unfortunately this is what happens. How often do we see a car on its roof in a ditch? too often, many would say.

So lets target the young drivers with more education about tyre safety and the use of winter tyres.

Here at Pellon tyres. We have noticed that the vehicles that are most affected by bad weather. Hence, in winter are the SUV vehicles. As a result, these cars have been fitted with very large and wide tyres. Thus, by the car manufacturers. Because these cars are at the luxury end of the car market. Requiring them to be a quiet and comfortable ride.

This is why they are fitted with summer tyres. In my opinion the job of giving these cars a much safer ride. Especially in winter. Therefore, has been solely laid upon the car owners. SUV cars perform very badly in winter conditions. As a result, should either be parked up in winter time. Hence, or fitted with a set of winter tyres. Because of the very large tyre sizes, these tyres are usually only made by premium tyre manufacturers, such as Pirelli Winter Tyres. They produce an excellent winter tyre for the SUVs called the “Scorpion Winter SUV tyres”, the new saloon winter tyre from Pirelli tyres is called the “Snowcontrol 3”.. Pellon tyres UK

for further winter tyres reading…

“Pirelli urges UK motorists to fit Pirelli Winter Tyres The Pirelli Winter Tyres Scorpion Winter SUV is designed to be much more balanced for cold and wet weather conditions, Pirelli told Tyres Accessories, while retaining its ice performance qualities”…

Pirelli tyres are not known for their winter tyre products here in the UK, but it is a growing market all across Europe and it is a market that they would like to be part of. This Snow patrol 3 tyre will definitely help them achieve this in the winters to come in my opinion.

car exhaust system

Exhausts Changed-to meet new European Union Emission Laws

Exhausts Changed

Exhausts systems also cost much more than 10 years ago

I can honestly say that I have lived during the most radical changes ever made to cars, due to the new rules about “global warming” and emissions from cars. Back in time when we had Vauxhall Vivas Cavaliers, Chrysler Horizons old type Minis and Ford Cortinas life in the garage was much easier and certainly more stable.

The exhaust systems on those cars would stay the same year after year. So much so that we could order systems in the hundreds at a time and kept a large stock, that we would always sell. In fact we could order exhausts systems by the container load and they would all be sold, (happy days).

Then the computer came along and car manufacturers could very quickly change car models, they became very flexible changing parts on different models at will.

This included systems. We were finding that Exhausts.  Like other parts would be left on the shelf unsold. Hence, we were becoming very reluctant at keeping exhaust systems on the shelves. Without, getting stuck with them. Consequently, at this time exhaust wholesalers began to spring up. As a result, and in a short period of time. We decided not to keep an exhaust stock at all. So, and leave it to the wholesalers. In fact. The last stock that we kept in was from Bosal Exhausts. Probably, (the best Exhausts in the World) and that was in the late nineties.

Exhausts Changed

The next thing to affect Exhausts were Vehicle Emissions controls. These were introduced by the British Government. Thus, requiring that cars had to be fitted with “Catalytic Converters.” These cats as we know them. Therefore, are fitted between the car’s engine onto the exhaust pipe system. The gas from the engine is filtered through the cat. Into a very fine filter system. Made from ceramics to withstand the high temperature. The cat has also some precious metals to help filter out the particulates. (this is why the cats are so expensive).

Some car models have a direct fitting cat to the engine. Thus, the engine sends out waste gasses. That are filtered by the cat. As a result, then the cleaner gases pass through the rest of the system. The Exhausts Changed boxes contain a fiberglass type material. Naturally,  that has an extra filter effect but will also muffle the sound that the gases make when leaving the engine. We all know how noisy a car is when the exhaust breaks.

Exhausts systems are better made these days

Some cars have two or even three boxes depending on the size of the engine and car. Here in the UK we do not change the exhaust until it actually breaks, and the we have it replaced and in my opinion this is the best thing to do. Even the worst looking rusty old Car Exhausts  can last for years and it is no use changing your exhaust just because it looks rusty and old, replace it when it breaks, unless it fails the MOT test. The main part to fail on the test will be the cat, if it fails the test the cat will need replacing.

To summarise Cheap Exhaust systems are far better made these and certainly last much longer, cats are also well made and will only fail if the ceramic cone gets damaged or if you go through flooded water, this usually affects the engine management system and your engine light could be illuminated on your dash, triggered off by your cars computer and a replacement will be needed.

Vintage Car Batteries

Old Austin spotted while delivering Vintage Car Batteries in the area.

I was very surprised when I called into a local garden centre for a coffee at there coffee shop. I love old and vintage cars and in actual fact we sell the 6 volt hard rubber Vintage Car Batteries that fit these old vehicles. To my amazement I saw an old vintage car forming the part of a sort of farm and country display in the corner of one of the glass houses selling household ware.

Luckily, I always keep my small camera with me. Therefore, and were able to take a couple of pictures for my blog . The car turned out to be a pick-up and was an Austin Lichfield Pick-up from 1932. hence, the car is very rare. Thus, I was really pleased to come across such a wonderful old car.

Morris Minor Vintage Car Batteries delivered

These Austin vans and pick-ups were known as “tillies” according to the article from “Graces guide”. I successfully delivered the Vintage Car Batteries which were for an old split screen Morris Minor 1000.

“A virtually new car was launched in 1939 with the body shell incorporating the floor to give a semi-unitary structure. The car was completely restyled by Argentine born Ricardo “Dick” Burzi who had joined Austin from Lancia in 1929.

In all during the war 53,000 of the saloons, pick-ups and vans, the last two unofficially known as “Tillies”, were made. With peace in 1945 a change was immediately made to civilian production but with the post-war financial crisis they were nearly all exported with the first one arriving in the United States in July 1945. So, 038 batteries are now used for many classic cars.

The van also re-appeared post-war with a slightly larger 1,237-cc engine”Read more on this old and very rare car at http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/Austin:_Ten

Your Car Servicing Costs

Getting your car serviced is a little like taking a trip the dentist: expensive and unpleasant, but deep down you know it’s a necessary evil.

Your Car Servicing Costs

This article from Cars-Guide explains that car servicing should not cost an “arm and a leg”. One of the cornerstones, when building my garage business. Thus, was to construct a fair pricing system for car servicing. As a result, we all know that there is many different shapes and sizes, when it comes to cars. Therefore, all car services cannot be the same price. Naturally, all services are not the same size.

I mean, some services are what we call the big service. This is where we check everything and change all the oils and filter. Smaller interval services, will just have the levels checked. A good garage will have a service menu fully priced for any make or model of cars. Some drivers think that because they own  Porsche. Hence, then they should pay more money for a service.

The only difference between a Porsche and say a VW Polo will be the price of the quantity of oil, the  filters and brake parts. Because of this we hear some horrific stories from our customers. One lady, who did actually own a Porsche. Thus, told me that she had just had the car serviced and paid £700 for the pleasure. Our service would have been at least half this price, and by using quality parts.

Needless to say  she now brings her Porsche in to us for servicing and repair work. Another myth that i hear is from customers that buy a new car. For this reason, the garage tells them that they must take the car back to the main dealer for servicing. Because, if they do not then their warranty will be void.

This is totally untrue. As long as the car is serviced at reputable garage, then the car warranty will not be void? This is written in to our law.
