Car Servicing Tips-Six Easy Steps for Avoiding Expensive Car Repairs by sticking to basics

Car Servicing Tips; Car repairs need not be that expensive

Significantly, a visit to your local car repairs shop can be even more stressful. Say  than a visit to your local dentist. Perhaps you wont suffer physical pain. But sometimes your car repairs bill. Frighteningly, can leave your wallet or purse feeling pretty empty. Including, leaving you with a bad taste in your mouth.

The best way to try and avoid costly repairs. So, is to take preventative maintenance measures and  Car Servicing Tips that will keep your car in the best condition possible.

The foremost thing that you should do is to follow the car manufacturers maintenance schedule. Of course, that will be outlined in your owner’s manual. The best guidelines are always always the ones that are recommended. Of course, by the manufacturer and if you fail to follow those guidelines. Your warranty may be voided for future repairs. Although here in Europe. You are allowed to have your car repairs and  servicing. So, carried out by a reputable garage, that uses original equipment service parts and oils by law. So, without breaking your warranty agreement. Importantly, a reputable garage would be one that operates under the  MOT testing station scheme.

Always be sure to change fluids

Naturally, such as your brake fluid, all the filters and spark plugs (if fitted) to what the car’s manufacturer recommends. It is also a good idea to upgrade your motor oil to a higher performance synthetic oil, which can help to prevent certain problems and can also improve your car’s overall performance. We keep in several types of oil for servicing as specifications are changing all the time but using synthetic oil is not a bad thing and will cover most modern engines.

Always be sure that your tyres are correctly inflated. This is especially important, because tyres with too little air, or too much, can result in excessive wear with bad handling and may cause a tyre to blow out. It is often recommended that your tyre pressures are checked during every other visit to the petrol station. While this may seems excessive, you won’t be sorry that you have kept your tyres correctly inflated and therefore safer. For reasons of both safety and the expense of new tyres, the extra effort is well worth it.

If you notice any unusual noises coming from your car, possibly engine problems! Whilst driving along check with your owner’s manual for information. Quite often, noises are perfectly normal and there is no need for concern. Your owner’s manual information section will let you know whether or not a visit to the Auto-centre is necessary.

Use a reputable garage for your car repairs

If you find that you do have to take your vehicle in for some Car Repair Advice, be sure that you are dealing with a reputable local company. Check with the other local people and ask your family or friends for recommendations. Also look out for your local independent garage, as they have very high standards to qualify for membership, and a nationwide warranty system, for if problems occur see your Local Car Repair Garages.

Waste car Tyres are being looked at by the EU Investigating Covering Roads With … Car Tyre Rubber

The European Union is spending €4.5 million on an experiment to turn Waste car tyres into an elastic material that can be put on road surfaces – particularly motorways – to reduce traffic noise, in an experiment that has, so far, hardly scratched the…

This idea is not new  but if implemented would use great amounts of our waste tyres.

Waste car tyre may be a problem of the future?

It could be possible that the waste car tyres  problem is resolved in our lifetimes, (I hope). I reported that waste tyre crumbs were being mixed with tarmac to improve the noise levels of the road surface as well as helping with general waste tyres problem.

Now we have some good news coming out of a European Union funded project called “PERSUADE”. The project kicked off in September 2009, and looks to me as though it is a different of substance to the mixture of tarmac with the rubber crumbs.

The new type of material that is made from waste car tyres is being tested for its compatibility with other road surfaces such as tarmac and concrete, in a bid to reduce road noise. The new type of road material was invented in Sweden as far back as the 1970’s and is made of waste car tyres, that are shredded into granules, which are then covered with a synthetic resin, this is then mixed with stone chippings and chemicals that help the final product give a suitable grip to the traffic that drive on the surface.

The difference between this and normal tarmac as we know it ,is the fact that the mix does not contain bitumen, the Bitumen Products as we know comes from oil and oil waste and is not environmentally friendly more reading… http://www.eurobitume.eu/bitumen/what-bitumen

Persuade were given a budget of 4.5 Million Euros

Of course ,which includes many different countries and work by several universities. So, as well as companies with similar interests to the project.

I must admit that this project came as a surprise to me. Surprisingly, I did not realise that such projects were in operation. I have to admit that I am pleasantly surprised! Of course, that one day the tyre industry will not have to pay for tyre removal . Meaning that old tyres will be of good use.

After several test tracks. Consequently, a full scale one was built in three EU countries Poland, Belgium and Sweden. These were built with an up to date mixture of the waste car tyres and other ingredients.

This was in 2014! So, up to now  has proved successful with favorable road noise results, but the trials will be ongoing and take into account the winter performance, skid resistance, durability and of course the road noise.

I know that other people in the tyre industry will be very pleased and even excited about these events, and I hope that the news will be as pleasing to them as it was to me, for more information about persuade… http://persuade.fehrl.org/

As an update i have found out that the rubber and asphalt mix is approved and used in Canada .

Hybrid Car Servicing

With cold weather just around the corner and nights beginning to draw in, the Good Garage Scheme is encouraging motorists to have their cars professionally checked to ensure they are safe and reliable in the winter months …

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Winter is on its way ?

This article from the “Good garage scheme” . Thus, pointing out to the motorist to the severe weather conditions the could be imminent. Of course, that may lie ahead. Frighteningly, with the  effects that a severe winter could have on your car. Importantly, if you did not prepare for it by servicing your hybrid car before the winter arrives.

So, helping the consumers by offering an MOT test and service for just about the £100 mark all inclusive. This offer is for most small and medium sized cars and will carry out your hybrid Servicing. Of course, on their cars for the winter ahead. This offer also includes a brake check and your anti-freeze levels topping up the correct winter levels. So you won’t be the one with a frozen engine. We also give your battery a good check over. For fear that, you will not be late to work because your cars battery has failed you.

Of course, it is now 2020 and we are just starting our second Covid 19 lockdown.

If your car does require an MOT test. Then it is important to give your garage plenty of time when booking in your car for a test. In there usual wisdom the government decided to postpone MOT testing for a 6 month period. Consequently, we now have a large backlog of tests.

The second lockdown starting on the 5th November 2020. Thankfully, the government are not suspending any testing for the second time.

Part Worn tyres Guy Fined-Guilty verdict for illegal part worn tyre seller – FleetNews

A Lincolnshire tyre retailer faces up to 12 months in prison. Including, along with a £20,000 fine. So, after being found guilty of supplying unsafe part worn car tyres to the public.

Good news for the battle against dodgy traders. Selling these unsafe tyre products to unsuspecting but gullible public.

Illegal Part Worn tyres

This is one of my pet hates. The fact that people are allowed to sell these illegal part worn tyres. Of course, and get away with it, (well some of them). This is not the first time that the part worn tyre problem has come to haunt the industry. It last raised its ugly head in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.

There was a huge outcry from within the tyre industry. Consequently, which eventually led to the Government setting certain standards. Of course, that would allow part worn tyres to be sold legally. These are listed below courtesy of tyresafe.org.

Under The Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 (reg.7.) part of the Consumer Protection Act, it is an offense for anyone to sell Part Worn Tyres UK that do not meet the following principal requirements:

1-   The structural integrity must not be compromised. It should be free of large cuts, any bulges or lumps both internally and externally. No plies or cords should be exposed.

2- Tyres must have passed an inflation test prior to sale.

3- The original grooves must still be clearly visible in their entirety and must be to a depth of at least 2mm across the full breadth of the tread, around its entire circumference.

4-  Part worn tyres which have not been retreaded must clearly show the relevant ‘E’ mark alongside which ‘PART-WORN’ must be permanently and legibly applied in letters at least 4 mm high. These words cannot be hot branded or cut into the tyre.

5- Part-worn tyres that have been retreaded must have one of the following:

BS AU 144b, 144c, 144d, or 144e markings on the side wall (if first supplied as a retread on or before 31 December 2003 an ECE approval mark (if first supplied as a retread on or after 1 January 2004)

A permanent mark to identify the original model and manufacturer.

So, the word ‘RETREAD’ moulded onto or into its sidewall (in upper case letters at least 4 mm high) and further markings in accordance with ECE rules. You may need to seek further advice as to which rules apply

The indication ‘PART WORN‘ must also appear next to the BS or ECE approval mark, or next to the word ‘RETREAD’

For tyres marked BS AU 144e, a speed category symbol and load capacity marking should be present.

A tyre has to comply with all these requirements whether or not it is fitted to a rim.

Part Worn tyres Guy Fined

These rules (laws) were brought out to try and make re-used old ones  safer when sold to the unsuspecting public. After a few years things appeared to level off and the industry thought that things had calmed down.

Part worn tyres raise their ugly heads again

Then came yet another recession! So, the tyre industry began to suffer once again. Importantly, with the rise again of the illegal waste tyre trader. Small bucket shops began to open up all over the country. Selling any old tyre rubbish as Part Worn tyres. I thought that there would be no way that the public would buy from such places, but I was wrong?

Not only was I wrong but these tyres were being sold with total disregard for the 1994 regulations, it is as though they never existed? Many trade bodies have been lobbying our government and people like me have been venting our frustration at the way that these tyres have been openly sold without any regard to safety or the 1994 regulations.

My main concern is purely the safety aspects for the thousands of motorists that buy these things, not knowing there condition or where they came from. It is good however that some trading standards department are once again raiding the premises of these people and prosecuting them for their actions. This is also occurring in the USA, the whole world is finally opening their eyes to the vast safety problem associated with these part worn accidents waiting to happen.

Power Storage Tesla battery could take your home off the grid with – Inhabitat (blog)

Power Storage

Ever wish you could ditch your electric bill? Tesla is working on a house battery that could help you break up with your expensive utility company, essentially turning any home into an off-grid abode.

Is it legal to run off grid in the USA! I might  sound pessimistic, but what if you are having problems with your battery power storage ?

Battery Power storage will be part of the big energy mix in the future!

This whole scenario of battery Power Storage and off grid electricity! So, is now going above my head? Tesla cars are now claiming that the Lithium-Ion battery unit. Of course, that drives their cars.  Could be used to store solar energy for the average family home for a good three and a  half days. (or should it be nights).

You see I can’t get my head around this fact! Significantly

Regarding the power that we would need to power the average home. Would be cheaper than the power supplied the grid. The total cost of solar panels or wind turbines combined with a large enough battery storage pack, that would adequately cope with all the power that was needed, without totally flattening the batteries and look after itself when the owners were away would surely outweigh the cost of mains electricity You would also need a backup diesel generator, to use as a back- up for your solar system should

I know that there are whole island populations that are now using a solar power electricity system that has a huge battery power storage system that fits into a 20 foot container. The system was set up by Saft a French battery company. Consequently, the island is in the Caribbean group of islands. So can rely on a constant supply of sunshine. But the experts say that these systems can work across most of the world, using the sun that is available to them.

I have seen something similar here in the UK

I am not sure if there are many other battery projects on the go. But the way I see it as a layman, is that all the experts from all the countries are just going there one way, when what is needed is the getting together of heads and experimenting on housing developments that are nothing like the ones today. These developments would be away from the national grid and would be totally environmentally friendly using all the latest materials for insulation, (I see that here in the UK we are starting to revert back to straw as an insulation material).

Importantly, with the homes facing the right way (south) and totally insulated. This in my opinion is going the right way. However, to go further, each development should have its own battery Power Storage system. Which connects all the homes together. The initial electricity will be powered by solar panels and if possible a wind turbine.

In my opinion the problem lies with the fact that everything is based on converting new systems from old. But I do not think this will work. You cannot just disconnect yourself from the grid! Because of many other issues. Including where the old electric cables run. Of course, what if you wanted to sell the house. Because, it will be mixing lots of old problems with new problems. I have solar panels fitted to my roof and think that they look fine. However, I know some people who hate the site of them! I won’t even go into wind-turbines.

I am just scratching the surface here.

We need some good joined up thinking and we need to build proper working experimental housing developments using the latest technology and test it out over a number of years. When I hear Tesla talking about their car battery storing power for home owners it makes me cringe, it would probably capable of this but we should be talking collectively and build whole communities, using the latest methods and a collective battery storage system and not load of individuals using all sorts of mis-match battery storage systems that you can find instruction on how to do, on YouTube.

Most of our towns and cities will always be run off the national grids, for well into the future; our infrastructures are too old to cope with major changes.

There is no doubt in my mind that battery power will be the future, wherever it comes from, but we should get our heads together and build proper sustainable environmentally friendly housing using only the power of the elements, this would be the way forward and if you read this article and know of such experiments taking place, please let me know.

Please note these are the words and opinion of the author (Eric Roberts) only. Neither the author nor the website can be held responsible for any errors or omissions. You should seek professional assistance if in doubt about your choice of battery. The article may contain a link to Batteriesontheweb where you can buy battery products online.

Service Reminders Very Important- Than ever – Pellon Autocentre

Service Reminders Very Important

Service Reminders Very Important

So, importantly, service reminders have always been our policy! MOT Testing reminders have also been one our priorities. Of course, computer technology and the appropriate software that accompanies it does help considerably. In the early days we would have to write everything down sometimes months in advance. However to be truthful we still do this to some extent.

This practice is invaluable when it comes to booking in MOT tests and car servicing. Especially, when it comes to sorting out the accumulation of testing slots! Due to the backlog caused by the governments cancellation of MOT testing during the recent Covid 19 crisis.

Unhappily we as a country are having to go into a second lockdown. Fortunately, we are one of the businesses who can stay open. Because we are considered as an important service to keep workers cars going and to carry out MOT tests on time. This advice also applies to people who are fortunate enough to have a company car.

Keeping your customers informed and up to date with their vehicle maintenance is seen as a valued service by customers and can be offered cost effectively nowadays. Using SMS and email is a convenient way to

Garages Can Keep Open- As England set for second lockdown

Garages Can Keep Open

Garages Can Keep Open

So, here we are again at the beginning of the second Covid 19 lockdown. Fortunately for us then we do not have to close. Primarily because this time we have to stay open to keep the MOT system up to scratch. As I have written before the UK government in their wisdom decided to stop testing for a 6 month period. In my opinion this was a step too far.

The suspension has now caused the MOT system to backlogs. So, here at garages such as Pellon Autocentre in Halifax UK  we are booking vehicles in for the MOT test up to three weeks in advance. Happily our customers have been very kind and helpful. Understanding the circumstances and been very polite and helpful. Unfortunately, there are some drivers who just dont turn up.

So, just a phone call would help! One thing that are we having to put with is “self isolating staff”. So, at the moment we only have one of our staff in this situation. Although under pressure we are still coping, during this second lockdown.

England is to face a new national lockdown from Thursday 5 November after a rapid rise in coronavirus cases, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said. The new measures will replace local restrictions and are expected to

New Diesel particulate filters Law-2014- makes Even more important to use the correct Oil

New Diesel particulate filters Law

New Diesel particulate filters Law

Oil helps in reducing vehicle emissions

New laws are making car manufacturers vastly reduce the emissions of new models that they produce. One of the ways to do this is by fitting complicated exhaust after treatment units to their cars. It means that new low SAPS oil must be used to protect these units. New laws will be coming out in 2014 to reduce the emissions even further. For further reading  follow “Diesel net“.

Another large change that is now becoming more common is the development of the “extended service intervals”, this means that the car owner needs to use special long life oils must be used to meet the extra demands of the longer service intervals. Most service centers will have the computer technology to state the exact oil that the car requires, but things are becoming more difficult for the DIY motorists amongst us.

New Diesel particulate filters Law; Indeed by using the wrong oil in your car can cost you around £2500

For a new engine unit, this the average cost of a family sized saloon engine replacement. I am not trying to scaremonger, but the stuff in your engine is becoming more critical. The number of 5W-30 oil types now used on modern cars has increased dramatically; this is because of the number of reasons introduced by the car manufacturers.

Any motorist getting this wrong will end up in trouble and possibly a large bill. It is now getting more important to have your vehicle serviced at a reputable service center, even an engine service will be better than nothing, do not forget good service centers will have all the help from the oil companies to make sure that they get the correct product for their car. The wrong oils will block up your diesel particulate filter or poison your three-way catalytic converter, all at a terrible cost. Also do not forget to get the correct oil mix, for example, synthetic or semi-synthetic oils, or even diesel or petrol oils, all have different properties, so if in doubt have your car serviced by professionals, and don’t take the risk of a damaged engine.

Pellon Auto Centre in Halifax offers to service at excellent rates.

Peugeot 206 Misfiring-Including pulling problem-Fuel Injector problems?

Peugeot 206 Misfiring

Peugeot 206 with engine problem

So, when you own a garage in the same town as a main dealer. You are more likely to get second and third hand cars in with problems. Of course, rather than the customer taking their car back to the usually more expensive main dealer. And why not! In most cases we have just as good equipment and knowledgeable staff, as the main dealers anyway. If we get stuck with a technical problem. Importantly, we have also got a network of people who specialise in the make of car. So from where the problem has arose. So, we can always rely on their help if such an occurrence arises.

The problems that can happen are usually electrical and although we have an array of scanners and computers, they don’t always get down to the problem and we have to seek help from friend who is a specialist in that field. This however did not apply to one of the jobs that a customer left with us the other week.

Peugeot 206 started OK but did not pull on hills.

The car was a Peugeot 206 2001 model and had started up on a morning, with no problems. At first the car drove along OK, but after about ½ an hour, the car started to lose power. The Peugeot 206 was still drive-able but he did notice a lack of power?

The car was also able to accelerate away when required, but his foot was down to the floor. He said that he thought that the car was asking for more fuel and had to keep it into a lower gear, say third instead of fourth. He said that a few years ago the 206 had a catalytic converter failure and the symptoms felt very similar.

The guy left the Peugeot 206 with us and Ryan decided the best plan was to plug the car into our scanner and see if anything showed up there. We often get similar problems with these

Sometimes the owner says that the engine feels like it is misfiring

Such as a guy who recently called in with his 206 Gt. This one ended up having an injector problem and we fixed it accordingly.

The scanner we used was a Solus Pro from Sun equipment. Subsequently, came up with a fault code R0270 Injector cylinder 4 circuit. This was a very clear indication what the problem was .

So, we contacted the customer with a price so that we could go ahead with the job. One important thing to remember about these injectors. Significantly, is that on French cars such as the Peugeot 206 they are changed as follows. Firstly, the number 1 injector is at the gearbox end. Secondly, the number 4 is at the driver’s side. Importantly, it is easy to replace the wrong one.

It has been known that the wrong injector has been changed? Say number 2 could be mixed up with number 3. This would mean that you may have changed the injector, but would still end up with the same engine problem and this has probably happened hundreds of times, by DIY car repairers.

After we were given the go ahead by our customer, Ryan ordered the new part and fitted it on its arrival. The code error then cleared and the Peugeot 206 was back to normal and collected by its happy owner.

all weather and winter tyres

Winter Tyres Insurance-Could fitting them Affect Your Car Insurance?

Winter Tyres Insurance

So, I always find it strange to hear my customers say “will my car be insured if I fit winter tyres”. I used to think that they were joking at first. But for some reason, they were very serious. Apparently it was something that they had read in a national newspaper. When I checked this out, it said that if you modify or change your car from the original specs. So, then you should inform your insurance company. Subsequently, or you could not be insured in case that you had an accident.

I suspect that this covers thousands of motorists. Importantly, driving about today, “with what they would consider minor adjustments” to their cars. Of course, such as fitting winter tyres, or a “go faster stripe “down the side.

There is no doubt that winter tyres do affect your cars performance. However, only for the better!  By making the car drive with better control and brake better. Especially, in winter weather from rain to ice and snow. As long as you stick to the same size and the advised load rating for your car. Then you should be fine and proud to fit the winter tyres.

Insurance companies should give you “discount” for fitting winter tyres

Even this year our customers have asked about the affect winter tyres can have on their insurance. So I thought that I would look into a little deeper and write an article about the subject. In my opinion I think that you should get a rebate from your insurance company. Of course, if you make your car safer by fitting winters to it. In fact the big debate to me is “are cars with illegal part worn tyres insured” and the answer is NO. But I will look at that in a future article.

The problem has also become an issue with the insurers themselves. Consequently, after a deluge of inquiries from worried car owners. Strangely, thinking that they would not be insured if they fitted these tyres to their car. According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI) the problem has been taken up with its members. So, now over 90% have agreed that they will not increase premiums. Happily, for their customers that fit the correct winter tyres to their vehicles.

Winter tyres much safer

They also agreed that fitting winters to their car. So, made for better road safety over the winter period. In fact many of the other European countries make it a law to fit winters between November and March of the following year, so why should the British motorists be penalized.

A statement from the ABI says; “often motor insurers will not charge an additional premium when their insured customers use winter tyres, provided that they meet, and are fitted in accordance with, the vehicle manufacturers’ specifications and are in a roadworthy condition”

If you are unsure about your own insurance company as regarding their stance on the matter, then you can either ring them up or go to the ABI website where insurers are listed, who comply with “good to fit winter tyres “ruling. The web address is… “ABI a guide to winter tyres“.

Winter tyres will not incur extra insurance costs

Have I have stated earlier in this article. So, the insurance companies often increased the costs of your insurance if you modified your car in any way and did not inform them, things like an upgraded modified engine spring to mind. They regarded you as been more likely to have an accident, if you had modified your car and also your car may have become a bigger target to car thieves, so an extra premium would have been charged.

At first when winter tyres became more popular the insurance companies gave out mixed messages, but the ABI can now confirm that winter tyres are a safety issue and are a great improvement when fitted to your car through the winter period.

My own advice would be to inform your insurance company that you are fitting winter tyres. You will, not have to pay any extra premiums. Some companies do require you to inform than a list can be found on the ABI web-site. Nick Starling, ABI’s director of general insurance, said: “Insurers do not want to penalize motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads. Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists.”

Good tyre retailers will have a web site for converting the sizes over legally. Importantly, and should be accepted by the insurance companies. Some insurance companies such as Tesco and The Co-operative insurance company state that you are alright to fit winters but you should not oversize them. Over sizing any tyres is not a good thing anyway?

Pellon Tyre and Auto-centre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles. Finally, we are still the Nokian tyre dealers for the Calderdale area of Yorkshire.

We also sell General Winter Tyres Online from our website www.pellontyres.co.uk .
