Could Driverless Cars Empty Cities

Could Driverless Cars Empty Cities

It comes as no surprise that the first autonomous systems. Able to control steering, braking, and accelerating. So, have already started appearing in cars. Automobile giants like Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan, Volvo, and Audi have all shown off cars that can drive themselves. As a result, they have all declared that within a decade. They plan to sell some form of advanced automated cars.

Thus, taking over driving on highways or to be able to park themselves in a garage. Google, meanwhile, is investing millions in autonomous driving software. Subsequently, its driverless cars have become a familiar sight. Especially, on the highways around Silicon Valley. Hence, over the last several years.

The first autonomous systems, which are able to control most of the cars systems. Therefore, have already started appearing in cars. The big car manufactures,  have all shown off cars that can drive themselves. I must confess that this is something that I cant get my head round? The thought of all these cars bobbing about town scares the pants off me.

Especially in small towns with Victorian infrastructure such as in Halifax here in the UK. So it may be OK in Silicon valley, but not many other places. I realise that If we think about it, we humans actually make terrible drivers. Not to mention, reckless drivers. People who fiddle with their phones, maps or GPS while driving are responsible for significant number of accidents.

The software that self-driving cars uses is smart enough to detect the wait time at traffic signals and also on road stops which would reduce unnecessary traffic congestion on busy streets. I do agree though with the people who took part in this survey. if I lived in a town or city then I would move to the country side. Escape would be the only way. However I do not think it will  happen in my lifetime?

What the survey says about the autonomous cars-

Van Battery Care-Your Car is at Risk! – Reasons for your Car Battery to Fail?

Home » Archives for August 2021

Frequent battery failure can cost you thousands of dollars for repairs. You can avoid Van Battery Care problems by following regular maintenance.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Give your car battery a winter check

As we all know winter is just around the corner here in the Northern hemisphere. The weather is turning colder at night and this will affect the performance of your car battery. To keep you car battery lasting longer there are one or two things that you can do.

If your van battery has the old type screw tops, then you can inspect the level of the acid in your battery, with Van Battery Care, this can be checked and remedied. If this is something that you have to do at often intervals then it means that the battery is boiling and could have a faulty alternator. You should top the battery up with distilled water and recheck it a few days after, to see if the level has dropped again. If the level has dropped then you should get your alternator checked at a good garage.

If are reading this in the UK and you do not know of a good garage, then look up the nearest independent garage in your area, they have safeguards to protect you the customer and a fair price policy, but more than that they can be trusted.

Also another Van Battery Care tip

Of course, is to look out for white coloured powder on the top of the  battery. This indicates a leak around the terminals, the white powder is dried battery acid. You can clean it off using a cup full of warm water. But if it is a recurring problem. So, it means that the battery is on its way out.Needing replacing! Before it lets you down, on your deliveries. It is a good idea to always keep a Car Battery Charger and a 12V Voltmeter,to hand. As it may just keep you going for a few more winter days. Of course, until you can buy Cheap Car batteries Online.

This is about the limit that you can go to check over your battery and look after it. After all has I have said the last thing you want is for the battery to let you down, when you

least expect it and having to be towed to the nearest garage to have it seen to, and paying over the odds because you are stranded. That is if they have a battery to fit your car, you may have to wait another day if they have to order a new battery.

More reading…”If you often see leaks under your car, it’s about time to check your van battery. Extreme weather condition can cause the battery to crack and leak. Van batteries sometimes leak a highly corrosive acid, which is harmful to your van and to you as well, good Van Battery Care, will ensure this does not happen?. Cleaning up a battery leak is easy, but you should observe the utmost caution when dealing with battery acid to prevent injury”… http://carfs.net/2013/10/your-car-is-at-risk-reasons-car-batteries-fail/

Air Filters-How they Work-Chevy High Performance Magazine

Air Filters

How Air Filters Work

Chevy High Performance Magazine

For performance air filter manufacturers like Air aid, determining the ideal filter design for each vehicle application is a balancing act between optimal flow and packaging constraints.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

What do CAR AIR FILTERS DO?

So, as we all know, All filters are very important parts of your cars performance system. They help your engine breathe easily by filtering out the dirt and dust that enters your car engine. The car engine sucks in tremendous amounts of air. Importantly, this air must be perfectly clean.

It is amazing what the engine will suck in. Especially, in summer time! Of course, it sucks in millions of insects and dust particles. Including, in autumn and winter! So, apart from dirt and grime, the engine sucks in leaves. Even water from the winter rains. All these things can end up in the engine compartment and eventually would be sucked into the inlet ports. But your air filter stops all this happening.

The cabin filter is most often encased in a plastic holder, or older cars could be made of metal. This casing is a secondary filter safeguard and is sometimes they are shaped like kitchen pans, with the air intake looking like the pan handle, but the more modern cars have them shaped to fit in with the engine compartment. The plastic box has its own filter slits which helps trap larger objects such as leaves.

Dirty filter ready for changing

Air Filters

It is therefore very important to have your car serviced at regular intervals and to make sure that the garage changes the oil and other filters by asking them to see the old ones when you pick the car up. If you do not change the air filter it will slowly clog up with dirt and starve your engine from oxygen.

This will hamper the performance of your car. The biggest problem is in Fuel-injected cars, because a dirty oil filter will hamper the performance of your car. It is great when a customer has just had his car serviced and notices the difference in the cars performance, this is usually because of the new air and oil filters.

Of course all  filters are manufactured by many different companies, but here in Halifax UK we use quality replacement filters on all models.

Autocar extols virtues of Quality Winter Tyres

“I was running a long term BMW 1M at the time, and at BMW’s insistence the car was fitted with a set of

The Bridgestone Blizzak Quality Winter Tyres are a great choice.

Michelin Alpin winter tyres.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Winter tyres

Of course, there has never been any doubt about Quality Winter Tyres . Significantly, including the fantastic job that they do when winter arrives. Including, most in the Northern hemisphere, no matter what country you live in.

It is always an advantage when great car magazines !

The likes of Autocar reinforce what us tyre experts have been saying for years. So. the reason that we tend to harp on about Quality Winter Tyres. Importantly, is the safety aspect of the product. These days the cars are getting much faster and powerful and we also have had the recent influx of SUV’s and crossover cars. These vehicles are next to useless when it comes to coping with the winter conditions of snow and ice. They are large and powerful and are absolutely useless in the snow without Quality Winter Tyres fitted.

Quality Winter Tyres are now an essential safety commodity

Significantly, to be used on our modern day vehicles. Winter tyres will even give you  significantly safety advantage when driving on the motorway on a stinking wet day. So must be considered before the winter sets in. We at Pellon Tyres in Halifax recommend a couple of makes that have been proven to us over the years. They are Nokian and Jinyu ! Although Jinyu are an economy brand. Importantly, we have tested these on our own vehicles over the past few years.

Of course winter is on its way yet again! So, I wonder what the 2020 winter will bring us. However it is important to keep you and your family safe and consider winter tyre if new tyres are required.

Hydrogen fuel-cell cars

Germans are dreaming of this new technology

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Toyota cars go ahead with Hydrogen fuel power

As a result of more advanced research. So, the hydrogen fuel cell technology has moved further on. Hence,

at this moment in time companies are setting up Hydrogen fuel-cell cars filling stations all over Europe. One company that has been heavily involved is Air Liquide . Consequently, who are in the process of developing filling stations. Indeed have built 60 new Hydrogen fuel-cell cars filling stations across the World.

Air Liquide have said that these fuel-cell cars can be filled in a few minutes and the equipment that is used to fill the car is much the same as a diesel or petrol car and is just as safe.

More reading…http://www.airliquide-hydrogen-energy.com/en/notre-offre/filling-station.html

Here in the UK we are making forward moves to build a network of Hydrogen fuel-cell cars fuel filling stations and negotiations are taking place to use the network of supermarket filling stations to accommodate Hydrogen Fuel Cells pumps alongside the standard pumps used for petrol and diesel.

This move by Toyota will bring into play a battle of the green choices; one will be the fuel-cell cars and the other lithium-ion technologies, very interesting to see who will come out on top.

So, to update the situation the Toyota are still leading the way forward. The main stumbling block is the lack of infrastructure for customers to fill up. Importantly, German car maker BMW is also interested in pursuing their interest in the Hydrogen powered cars.

So, BMW along with the “clean energy partnership initiative” are looking to set up to 130 service stations by the year 2022. Ultimately, this will allow up to 60,000 hydrogen cars to operate in Germany. Optimistically, service station locations should increase up to 400 by 2025

Waste Tyre Uses- there are many uses of scrap tyre now including these great planters.

Waste Tyre Uses

Correct tyre disposal is in all our interest. Old tyres are just part of the problem of recycling all our waste. During recent times we have started to solve the problem of mass disposal of our scrap tyres. Hence, they are now turned into many useful items. Importantly, such as tarmac chipping where the small pieces of rubber are shredded. So, these rubber chips are added to tarmac to give a quieter road surface. The other big use is that they are used to power cement kilns. Thus, which are specially heated to dry out the liquid cement in large kilns. The kilns are designed not to emit any smoke into the atmosphere, making this a very green process.

In essence, the thing that I am pleased with is the millions of ways that ordinary people have found ways to use our old car tyres to make different items. Some make clothing and jewelry, but the main items are made into garden objects and I think that they look really good. I am starting to show some of these ideas on my blog and hope to inspire people to use a few old waste tyres into making similar things.

Waste Tyres Uses-Collected from any tyre depot for free

Ultimately, tyre depots would only be too pleased to let any gardener take scrap ones. Of course, to be used as planters. Here in Halifax UK we are only too pleased to help anyone out with some old ones.

So, to bring things up to date, then gardening has become more popular in 2020. Subsequently, due to the terrible covid 19 lockdown that we here in the UK have had to put up with. People have taken up a greater interest in nature! Including a rise in the number of gardeners. Given these points, people in smaller gardens have taken to container based gardening. Including using old tyres again.

MOT Testing Halifax-Wheels and Tyres-Explained

Home » Archives for August 2021

Pellon Autocentre is an MOT Testing Halifax station with over 20 years experience.

MOT Testing Halifax is part of a series of explanations. About, how the MOT Rules works to keep your car safe and legal. When you prepare your car for the MOT test, the follow advice will apply. Especially, when dealing with wheels and tyres. The first thing to check are the wheels. As a result, if you have alloy wheels. Because, you should check for serious damage and cracks. Also, you must have a full set of wheel nuts fitted. If your car has steel wheels and plastic hub caps. Of course, the nuts will not be checked by the tester. Thus, they will only be checked if you remove the hub caps before the car is tested.

If any nuts are missing then this will result in a failure.

According to the DVLA MOT Rules. The tyre condition is very important. Testers look for any side wall damage and for any cuts or damage to the tyre tread. The tester will also check the tread depth. Using his official tread depth gauge. The legal limit is 1.6 mm across three-quarters of the tread width . This can be detected by a visual look at the tyres. Of course, before you present the car for a test. Tyre manufacturers build into the tyre treads a wear indicator bar. For when the tyre wears down to the bar a bald patch is visible. Police officers also use these bars as away of a quick check of tyre condition. Especially, when stopping a motorist for a check over.

Spare wheels and tyres are not part of the MOT test,

MOT Testing Halifax. You may not present a car for a test with a temporary spare on the car. Also, you must present the car with the best four wheels and tyres on your car. Tyre sizes are checked on the car on the same axle. But other information such as load ratings are not checked.Because, this is deemed as too technical. As a result, some cars may break the law. They are not part of an MOT test and therefore will not fail.
It is always good practice to have your car checked out or have a service when you have your car tested, this will ensure that your car is legal and safe. Pellon Autocentre is leading MOT Testing Halifax area.

Pellon Tyre and Autocentre offer car and van servicing and repairs to all makes of vehicles.

WASTE TYRE TALK- 4 Ways to Use an old tyre- to get rid of your spare tyre? and KEEP FIT

Home » Archives for August 2021

WASTE TYRE TALK-Looking for a fun and effective new piece of exercise equipment to burn fat and sculpt lean muscle?

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

This is a great way to use an old spare tyres.

I have seen ways of using old tyres . Including “how to keep fit” . Helping to “Get Rid of your Spare Tyre“. Especially, in recent times. Reminding me of when I was a young tyre fitter in my twenties. Consequently, I worked for a

company in Leeds called Kurt Neilds. Then owned by Goodyear . Fitting Earthmover tyres for a living. The job was fantastic. We lifted and carried the giant tyres on Euclid Earthmovers and other giant plant hire vehicles, such as Cat Earth-movers like the Cat 631s and Terex dump trucks; we were as”fit as fiddles” and got paid for it as well.

I only weighed 11 stone and could eat what I wanted

Of course,it is no wonder that the use of tyres.  Have been taken up by sportsmen and women to help them exercise. I was impressed at the way rugby union players. Who can throw these big tyres about ! So now it looks like old tyres are being used for the exercises.

As described in this article from the WASTE TYRE TALK-Savannah Morning News. I am too old to take this up now but if anybody would like some old spare tyres to train with, you can have them for free here in Halifax.

Old waste tyres are now used for all sorts of things. One of the main uses is to make them into rubber crumbs so that they can be made into safe flooring for say, children’s play areas, these are replacing wood chippings that were once used and are much safer for the children to play on. The waste tyre industry also supplies rubber pellets to the cement making companies to power their cement drying kilns. Also large amounts of rubber pellets go into the making of tarmac for our roads, to give a more cushioned ride, and a harder wearing surface, when driven on.

Your winter safety tyres

Your winter tyres, will help you drive like this in the coming winter

KSHB

Tips from Toby: Making sure Your winter safety tyres are ready for winter

KSHB

“The control of the vehicle, you can imagine having three tires at the proper pressure and one that is say 10 pounds or even 15 too low.

Eric Roberts‘s insight:

Your winter tyres Tips from Eric

Winter is now on its way here in the Northern hemisphere, and if you want to get to work on time and impress your boss, it is time to fit your winter tyres.

Your winter tyres do not only give your car stability in snow, but they also protect you by gripping the road better in very wet conditions and prevent your car from aquaplaning. This is when a film of water forms between the road surface and your tyres, causing your car to lose grip with the road surface.

We always fit Best Winter Tyres to our vehicles and I can guarantee that they make you feel much safer in snow and bad inclement weather, and that’s because they are much safer than summer ones.

Summer tyre lose their suppleness  when the temperature drops below 7 degrees C, whereas Your winter tyres contain silica in the compound, which helps them to be more flexible

and aid gripping to the road surface in cold weather. A couple of brands that i would recommend, would be a budget tyre brand called Jinyu and a mid-range tyre brand called Nokian Tyres UKboth these  brands have been tested and proven by us here in Halifax UK, and in many other Winter Tyres Test Results.

Of course Your winter safety tyres are not just designed for coping with ice and snow! So, I must confess that I am a winter tyre freque. Whatever vehicle that I drive then I fit winter tyres. Confidently, these tyres are capable of coping with all types of weather. Including the very heavy rain storms that we are having in recent years.

Importantly, winter tyres will get rid of the worse rain storms. Confidently, giving you control of your vehicle when other could be suffering. Safety is the word and winter tyres certainly give you and your family better safety when driving in these conditions!

Financial support for independent garages-IGA calls on government to provide ongoing financial support

Financial support for independent garages

Financial support for independent garages

I must agree with the actions of the IGA (Independent Garages Association). After all in my opinion they do have a valid point. Although we here at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax UK are not members we are all in the same boat. Since the beginning of the MOT covid restrictions in 2020 we have all lived in a “topsy turvy land” of boom and bust MOT testing.

Consequently, we have  lost out with many customers because we could not cope as a small garage during the MOT test peaks. This meant lost revenue as customers had to abandon their regular testing stations. Of course because they were too busy. In normal times we have a booking in and customer reminder system. That will balance out any peaks and troughs during a normal business year.

The six month whammy that hit us by the Government has thrown all this to the wind. We should be receiving some sort of financial help to help us balance our books in the next few years. I myself think that the rate relief scheme would be the best way forward. Not all garages are in trouble but a balanced aid package would be a good idea.

I am pleased that the IGA have come forward on all our behalf’s and we fully support their actions. Especially in these important times when all independent garages will also suffer from the governments incessant drive to get us all driving the dreaded electric cars which I hope will fail.

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Transport Secretary and other Ministers, urging them to put a financial support package in place for garages. The trade body argues that
