Ford Escort Steering Problems-Similar Ford models with similar problems?

Ford Escort Steering Problems

Ford Escort Steering Problems

In recent weeks ,we have had a spate of Ford Escorts with steering problems. Therefore, I recon that the large number of “potholes” that we have are to blame. Hence, we have all gone down a pothole in recent times. Especially here in the Halifax UK where my garage is situated.
Furthermore, potholes do seem to affect the older more frail car models. Consequently, these older cars are usually owned by the younger generations. To put it another way, these younger drivers will probably have ago at a DIY repair.

Ford Escort Steering Problems

Because they at the lower end of the income bracket and can not afford garage fees.
Ford Escorts come into the bracket of young driver cars. Fortunately, we have a large female customer base. As a result, females are able to budget for car repairs. So they are more likely to bring in their car for us to check out and give them a quote for work.
In the past three or four weeks we have had a run of Ford Escorts with steering/suspension problems. Consequently, the first one was the wife of an old customer. Her name was Jane. Jane drove an old P registered escort that was handed down through the family. She loved her little car.

Ford Escort Steering Problems-Jane’s car pulled to the right?

Jane reported that her front tyres were wearing down on the outsides. Also, when she accelerates the car then it pulls to one side. In this case to the right. Consequently, the car pulls to the left when she eases her foot off the gas.
Her husband had looked the problem up online. because of this he thought it could be either the “steering rack” or the “drive shaft”. Jane left her Escort with us and we proceed to examine the ladies car.

Ford Escort Steering Problems-Suspension arm bushes were the culprits

Without doubt, we checked the steering rack and the driveshaft. But these were fine and in good working order. In this case, we found that the problem was the “lower suspension arm bushes”. Apparently, a common problem with this model. As usual we contacted the customer. In thus case Jane. Jane was given a quote for the work and we were given the go ahead to proceed.
The work was completed and we re-adjusted the wheel alignment before road testing the car. Jane works for the local Nestle company in Halifax. Moreover, she was highly delighted with the service and brought us a box of chocolates to share amongst the staff.

Second Escort was exactly the same?
1977 Ford Escort Gti

Later that week we received another call from a young man. Hence, whose name was Craig . Craig’s car was his pride and joy,a 1977 Ford Escort Gti. Once again Craig brought in his car for us to check out. Sometimes, the car had a mind of it’s own. Steering wise.
Whenever driving along. Then the car keeps getting wobbles. Especially on bumpy roads with dips in them. Craig also reported that the Escort would pull to the right and then the left. Of course, this sounded very much like Jane’s problem with her Escort.
The car was left with us. Sure enough the problem turned out to be exactly the same, the lower suspension arm bushes. Consequently, these were replaced and the car also had a wheel alignment, before a road test. Once again our customer was highly delighted and collected his Escort the same day.

Suspension Arm Bolts-BMW 1 Series Car- Breaks Suspension Arm Bolts

Suspension Arm Bolts

BMW 1 Series Car in for He found that when the car had skidded and hit the kerb it had snapped the Suspension Arm Bolts

Sadly, on one of the worse windy and rainy days of the year. So, one of our good customers was out and about in his BMW 1 series car, 2008 model . Consequently, finding himself having to swerve his car. Thus, having to avoid a broken branch ! That had just snapped off a tree due to the high winds.

BMW suspension arm bolts showing the sheared off bolt, the other bent

Dangerously, his car skidded and crashed into the kerb. Causing damage to the underside of the car. Of course, the customer suspected that something had been broken the Front Suspension. Perhaps an “Arm Rubber Bush”, or the “Suspension Arm Bolts”. Carefully, his car  limped into my garage in Halifax West Yorkshire.

Manager the garage department examined the BMW

Ryan Linton pulled the car onto a ramp. Of course to examine the car to see what had happened. Significantly, Ryan found that when the car had skidded and hit the kerb. Indeed, it had snapped the Suspension Arm Bolts, on the multilink suspension that these BMW cars have.

Also the TPMS sensor lights were illuminated ! So when checking, the BMW’s tyres . Indeed they were found to be inflated to the wrong pressures. Unfortunately, we later thought that this could have caused the car to swerve. Thus hitting the kerb, when the cars driver was trying to avoid the tree branch.

SO, the problem was discovered and the hub had to be removed to solve the problem. Also, the broken stud was drilled out as the stud had been snapped off flush with the hub. Subsequently, the bolt was drilled out and the hole was re-tapped . Of course ready to take a new stud. The other Suspension Arm Bolts were BMW Parts ( supplied by the local BMW dealer in Wakefield, the nearest one to my garage in Halifax) were also changed and the assembly was re-fitted.

BMW car had low tyre pressures

In conclusion, we now think that the guys low tyre pressures were the cause. Of the car correctly not handling when he swerved to miss the branch. Finally, we also checked and inflated his tyres to the correct pressures. Our happy customer went off on his way three hours later.

UPS Batteries Have Many Uses-12 Volt 12 Amp are very popular

UPS Batteries Have Many Uses

UPS Batteries Have Many Uses

UPS Batteries Have Many Uses; 12 volt 12 amp in most backup batteries supply systems ?

I would not be exaggerating to say that that the 12 volts 12 amp UPS  (uninterrupted power supply) battery. Will be found in most large offices around the World. The most common usage for this one is as a backup supply source of power. Of course, in the event of a mains power supply failure. When the mains go down. Then the 12 volts 12 amp battery bank kicks in and allows the computers to carry out a proper shutdown. So, saving very valuable data from being destroyed. The UPS battery will be used in very large banks of backup systems .

These UPS Batteries Have Many Uses. Including, backup systems will usually come within a surge circuitry. Also have a built in filter this will protect the circuits and the computer from power surges. These surges are known as transients, spikes and surges and can destroy and even delete data as well as damaging the computer equipment. One of the commonest forms of power surges is lightening, even if an adjacent building is struck then a surge can occur and damage an unprotected computer system, but thanks to the 12 volts 12 amp battery then this will be protected.

“Even entry-level battery backups provide visual and audible alarms based on various states of alert. They also include automatic shutdown software that controls the connected microcomputer via USB port so that if the user happens to be away from the computer when the power fails, the system takes over and initiates safe shutdown procedures before they drain”… http://battery-backup-review.toptenreviews.com/what-exactly-is-a-computer-battery-backup-and-which-one-is-best-.html.

12 volt 12 amp batteries also fit many mobility scooters

063 Car battery Online-is Still one of the Most Popular batteries sold by BatteriesOnTheWeb

Home » Archives for December 2020

063 Car battery Online

Consequently, your regular car battery is still the thing that keeps your car electrics going. Especially, when your cars engine is switched off. Significantly, your battery is the thing that your car relies on. Especially the cars ECU (computer). Accordingly, when you switch off the engine and park it up for the night. Without being charged up, your 063 Car battery just does not work.

Just another reason why it is important to have your battery checked. Hence, at regular intervals such as service times. Including a check on your cars charging system. Of course a battery test is usually free of charge at your local independent garage Naturally, you can find your nearest centre online, by clicking the link.

By testing your 063 Car battery at regular intervals. So, you should avoid having a flat battery. Specially, when this always happens at perhaps a crucial time or an inconvenient place. Subsequently, your Car battery always goes flat where you don’t want it to. Perhaps, say in the supermarket car park. Particularly, when you have an appointment with the doctor. So a regular battery check should avoid all of this.

When buying a new 063 Car battery

Always importantly check out the specifications on the new battery that you require. Although, the part number may be the same !Then the number of amps may not be the same. For an example newer car models now have much more electrical components built into them.

Requiring much more power from the same size battery. The 063 battery came out years ago and was sold with a capacity of 35 amps. As a result was fitted onto early Vauxhall Nova’s and Corsas as well as early “British Leyland” cars. Such as the BMC 1978 Mini that I used to ownReplacing the very common 038 battery which was very popular at that time. In brief, the 063 Car battery was made more compact. Fitting into the smaller car models of the day more easily.

However as time went on and emissions became an issue. Cars were increasingly fitted out with more electrics and emissions control computers (ECU’s) . So the amps were increased to 44 amps. Of course on on exactly the same battery casing size, the 063 Car battery.

063 car battery now up to 44 amps

The up to date 063 Car battery is still the most popular car battery on the market in the small to medium size car market, but the difference is in the power. The power output is now up to 44 amps almost twice the capacity of the earlier 35 amp battery. This is a very important point when buying an 063 battery! Make sure that you have ordered the right capacity of your battery.

All you have to do is to replace the battery with the exact same car battery. Of course the same one that you have on the car. So, do not let people kid you that they are all the same ? They are not. Modern cars now charge and dis-charge at a higher voltage. In short, it is important that you get the right battery for the job. The new higher capacity Varta 063 heavy duty 52 amp car battery is now available online .

Peugeot Partner Vans Clutch problem-cost customer an “arm and a leg”-lessons to be learned?

Peugeot Partner Vans Clutch problem

Peugeot Partner Vans Clutch problem

Peugeot Partner Vans Clutch problem

As the owner of an independent garage. Hence, we service and repair ,many makes of cars and vans. As a result, this also depends on which main dealer garages are also located in your local area. Therefore to explain, then if you have a Ford garage in the area , then you are very likely to have a good number of Ford cars visiting your garage. Especially after the warranty period.
This also applies to my garage here in Halifax UK. Subsequently, we repair many cars in the Peugeot, Range Rover and Vauxhall car models. This is because, when the warranty period expires then drivers prefer to bring their cars to my garage.
Halifax is a small town. Unlike our neighbours in Huddersfield, who probably have main dealers for every make of car. However, we are extremely thankful for the local business that we already get. As a result has kept my family fed for the past twenty six years.

Back to the Peugeot partner vans problem?

I should actually say “vans”. One particular day we received phone calls from the owners of two separate vans, Hence, both were Peugeot Partner Vans. At first, I thought that it was two calls about the same van. yet, it did turn out that the vans were different with a similar problem?
Consequently, both drivers were male.
John had a Peugeot partner van with a noisy clutch pedal. As a result, the first call was from a driver in the Halifax area. John was the name of this van owner. John had a problem with the clutch pedal. To clarify, he said that the clutch pedal became a little squeaky, a bit creaky around the clutch upper extents.

I asked if the van drove ok. John said, It did and he could still change in the earlier stages of the problem. However, the problem began to get progressively worse. Especially, when the van was idling or at low revs. John also said that the van gave out a squealing high pitched sound. This sent out alarm bells. Consequently, I recommended that he brings the van into us for a mechanic to examine.

Peugeot partner vans a 1.6 2003 petrol model

When the van finally arrived. Hence, one of my mechanics diagnosed the van had a problem with a noisy bearing. Without doubt, the high pitched squealing sound was a sign of a clutch bearing that was on its way out.
As a result of our diagnosis, the guy left his van. We split and stripped down the gearbox to allow us to examine the clutch. Sure enough, the clutch bearing was very black due to overheating. Thus, requiring replacement.
After contacting the customer, John, we recommended that he also had a new clutch plate and cover fitted. Because, the old clutch did not have much life left. John gave us permission and the job was completed and the van was as good as new.

Second Peugeot partner vans clutch problem a diesel van

As we were repairing the first van . Consequently, a second owner of a Partner van called us for help. The second guy was called Ron. Ron had been doing a delivery in the Hinckley area of Leicestershire. This time, Ron knew that the problem was his clutch. On account of, his van gave out some loud squealing and then the clutch pedal lost any play. Ron, could not get any gears and the van came to a stop at a road junction.
The first thing for me was to ask Ron if he was a member of any of the motoring rescue organizations? Believe it or not his membership of the AA had expired. Because, Ron was stuck, without any gears and in trouble. Then I promised to help him from Halifax.

Peugeot partner vans clutch problem towed back to Halifax UK

My first “call of port” was with the AA. For the reason that, he was a past member. Thus, the AA said they would help but it was going to cost him £420 for recovery and a years membership. After contacting other breakdown companies. Then the AA was going to be the cheapest.
Once, I had the facts together, I contacted Ron in Hinckley. Because he was completely stuck in a hard place he agreed to pay the money. Consequently, the partner van was towed to Sheffield and then from Sheffield to Halifax. Because the drivers can only cover so many miles.
The following day, we repaired the van and fitted a new clutch assembly. Ron’s van was as good as new, but the lesson is to make sure that you are a member of one of the national/European breakdown schemes. This would have saved Ron £420 at least?

MOT Proposals Idiotic-IAAF says MOT proposals are “fraught with danger”

MOT Proposals Idiotic

MOT Proposals Idiotic

MOT Proposals Idiotic

The thing I do not understand is who or what actually brought this request in the first place. Of course some lobby group from somewhere have asked for a four year gap before an MOT test can be carried out on new cars. Or is this some watered down proposal from the EU?

We all know that brakes and tyres are not going to last the four years. Hence, before they require an MOT test. At present the time is three years which is most adequate. As a result, this protest report from the IAAF highlights some of the points against the new proposals.

So bringing this post into 2020 then I believe these proposals have now been scrapped. We are now in the process of leaving the European Union. Of course this will all be looked at in the future by the UK department of transport!

General Winter Tyres-A must for Scotland and Northern England this Coming Week January 2021

General Winter Tyres

General Winter Tyres-Scotland a Winter tyres Haven

It is not rocket science to know that the further North we go in the British Isles then the colder it gets. Winters  have become a second nature to people living in Scotland and this is the time of year that the Scots get ready for the Inclement weather that will be heading their way. I have visited this beautiful country in all the seasons of the year and you can guarantee that if you travel in late Autumn  through early spring, that you will encounter Snow.

Scotland has recently enjoyed very good snow falls in their mountain ranges. Especially the one that I am most familiar with, the “Cairngorms” you must visit their web-site to appreciate the winter wonderland and the great skiing conditions that you can enjoy there.

Apart from all your skiing equipment, there is one thing you must not forget ? General Winter Tyres are a must to be fitted to your car, before setting off to Scotland or if you live in Scotland you must fit a set on your car. Even if you are visiting the lower mountain ranges of Scotland you are advised to buy a set of snows. You could be caught out at any time during the colder weather after the late Autumn frosts.

General Winter Tyres

Winter tyres are now becoming a necessity for Northern England

Motorists living in Northern England are now starting to become familiar with the same climate problems that they experience in Scotland. Anyone can now get caught out in a snow storm during late Autumn and the whole of Winter.

Most of Northern England are in hilly districts including the Pennines and peaks of Derbyshire to the North Yorkshire moors and the mountains of the lake District. This means that motorists in these areas require better gripping on their cars. The minimum that car owners require is a good normal summer tread pattern, when what they really need is one with plenty of tread on the tyres, but this will be rendered useless when the snow gets here and unless you have General Winter Tyres fitted you will be stranded even in flat districts.

General Winter Tyres will last for about three winters

Of course, providing that in Spring you change back to your summer tyres. Naturally, this service is carried out by many local tyre companies such as Pellon Tyre Centre in Halifax West Yorkshire. Consequently, when you buy your winters  they will store them for you and re-fit the summer ones. Of course, when the threat of any more bad weather has receded. Nonetheless, the first time you need them fitting is done free of charge. Followed by a small charge for re-fitting the following spring.

Nevertheless, this has been a large success in the past three years. Moreover, we are looking forward to seen our repeat business in the years to come. Many of our past customers tell us about many stories when people were getting stuck in snow. While they were able to get out of trouble because they have chosen the correct product for their car.

Peugeot 206 Clutch-This customer had a double problem with her clutch?

Peugeot 206 Clutch

Peugeot 206 Clutch

Peugeot 206 Clutch

Lady customers, now make up about 60% of our total customer base. Of course, this has built up over the years. Of course, it is no coincidence that we have also built our social media base over the past few years.
As a result, I believe that our attempts to give our best customer service, are reaping results. Because, I am certain that our lady customers are more willing to spread the good word. Especially, on FaceBook.
This short article is about one of our lady customers and her Peugeot 206 clutch problems. Hence, the lady’s name is Susan. Susan and her family are good customers of ours.
Indeed, Susan telephoned us about six or seven months ago. In fact she was on her holidays, somewhere in Devon or Cornwall. Consequently, she was driving along and noticed that there was a click or knocking sound when she depressed her clutch. In order to help her, I recommended that she pulled into the next safest place and call us back.
As a result, the clutch failed altogether, luckily just before she reached a supermarket car park. Without doubt, I surmised that her clutch had gone. Susan was five or six hours away from Halifax. So I had to arrange another garage from the Unipart Car Care Centre (UCCC), to repair her Peugeot 206 clutch.
Been a member of UCCC, helps us to repair our customer’s cars when travelling across the UK. Especially ,when they are so far away. However Susan’s car was promptly collected and repaired at a reasonable price.

Peugeot 206 Clutch

Alex splitting the gearbox to get to the Peugeot 206 Clutch

Peugeot 206 Clutch

However, fast forward six months and Susan was hearing a similar noise when pressing the clutch pedal.Hence, her car was a peugeot 206 1.4 with a petrol engine. because of her concern, she left the car with us to take a look at the car.
Our first job was to strip down the clutch to check other garages workmanship. This particular model has a hydraulic clutch. However, we noticed that the clutch release bearing, looked very black and burned. This is due to the bearing overheating.
Of course, on closer examination, we found that the car needed a new clutch release bearing. The slave and master cylinders looked ok but we bled them out just to make sure.
After building the clutch assembly back up again. Then we road tested the car and everything was fine. As a result of us been a UCCC then we did not charge the lady the full price. She was very happy with this and I am sure that we would have got yet another great revue on social media.

Dunlop Tyres Motorsport-in Birmingham may close ending a long history in the City

Dunlop tyres Motorsport division was a memorable visit for me in the 60s

So, the Dunlop Tyres Motorsport division always brings back great memories for me . In the sixties a local would would be racing driver called Paul Craven wanted us to obtain some Dunlop racing sliks for his racing car (i think it was F2 racing but I am not sure)

Dunlop sports maxx tyres are a result of Dunlops tyre development in the field of motorsport. All major tyre companies can tie the fact that the tyres that we use on our roads are a result of testing and research in the field of car sports, the closure of this at Fort Dunlop will be a sad loss for the People of Birmingham UK.

Of course. Paul was the wealthy son of a Company that made building breeze blocks. Importantly, out of waste from the local coal fired power station (now pulled down).

In those days I worked for the local National tyres in Dewsbury West Yorkshire UK, and I was chosen to go to the  sports division in Birmingham the West Midlands. This was in pre-motorway days and the journey would have been about four hours. We did not have sat-navs then but I finally found the giant  tyre factory. In those days we did not ever travel far away from our small tyre depot. So I was very excited. The guys at the factory were very helpful and showed me round the racing division, the rally tyres and the F1 tyres and of course the ones that I had to collect were loaded onto my van and off I went back North, a great day out.

The  factory was now becoming old and was systemically dismantled over the coming years and the tyres were made in other parts of the World, only the racing division remained.
