Tyre labeling- is now considered good for the motorist to check on?

Tyre labeling

tyre labellingTyre labeling is too vague for modern tyres

Brain twister  labeling is fraternal against the taxidriver.: .RXP http://t.co/3ZC6K6aCDx

eric roberts‘s insight: Since this post was first release. Hence, I have now changed my opinion. As a result of  regarding tyre labeling. For this reason, at first i did not think that the buying public. Would take any notice of the tyre grading’s. But now we are getting many drivers. That are comparing the makes of tyres. Thus, before they make their purchase. Consequently, I did not think that this would ever happen. Therefore, I thought that most people would  buy on price alone. But I admit that i was wrong. I would say that out of all of our  purchasing customers about a third now compare the Tyre labeling ratings. We now show all the different Tyre labeling ratings of all the tyres that we offer on our website, so that our customers can look at the different labels and make a more informed choice of tyre for their cars.

Tyre labeling does not affect tyre virtues

What do i mean ?. Manufacturers have always been torn between two things, Good grip or high mileage. it is very difficult to get the correct balance, we all know about the Michelin “X” when it came out ? it knocked the socks off mileage compared to all the other manufacturers, but also became famous for not been very good in the wet.

This is a great example of the imbalance that can take place between the two things that the tyre makers are trying to achieve. With today’s modern tyre testing techniques these  companies have a much better chance of getting the balances correct. So much so that tyres can now be made for specific car models such as BMWs and Mercedes, who have their own specific ones to aid the cars performance.

What i am getting at is that in my opinion tyre labeling is not a good way of determining how good a tyre really is and is just another piece of bureaucracy that came from the European Union. The tyre companies are way ahead of these stupid labels, that really tell the motorist nothing. Also how true is the tyre labeling on imported economy brands ?

Tyre labeling

Tyre labeling with the tyre attributes are now becoming more and more popular with the public and to my surprise some drivers are specifically targeting the best advice from these labels and it will make the tyre manufacturers open their eyes to making a better product.

Humber Saloon original owner Found

This article is just one that I had to put onto my blog. Because, we sell classic car batteries, then I think it will be of interest. Hence to some of our classic car battery customers. Consequently, the car was reunited with its former owner, the article tells all. Summer time is the time for getting the vintage cars out of the garage. Thus, giving them a good check over. Including the batteries and then having a run out. Especially on a nice warm summers day. There are many vintage car shows in the UK this year. For this reason, we often see the cars making their way to the shows.

Bert Davidson, 83, thought he’d seen the last of his 1929 Humber saloon when he sold it for £185 nearly 60 years ago, until he was contacted out of the blue by engineer Robin Wills.

Excellent Morgan sports car is owned by a Greek Guy (dont know his name) (but I know his battery size) 038 Morgan Battery?

The owner of this Morgan is from Greece but now lives in the Halifax area. Here in the UK. For this reason, I am overwhelmed by the number of classic cars and sporty cars that we supply batteries to .Hence, this is proof that we are rapidly becoming one of the top battery centres here in Yorkshire. Therefore, we supply cheap batteries . Also, the more expensive batteries . Thus, like the start and stop batteries that are now supply on the new BMWs and Audis.

Of course, the battery that was fitted to this Morgan was an 038 part number. Consequently, the 038 is one of the oldest modern type car battery. That we now sell . Subsequently, this battery was originally fitted to the old type BLMC Minis and Triumph Spitfires .Along with a host of other car models.

We can supply these batteries in different size

Along with the 037 which was fitted to the early Fords, such as the Escort Mk1s and the Cortinas. We offer the 038 Morgan Battery and the 037 in both Lucas batteries and Tungstone Car Batteries.

There is no doubt that this is great news for ourselves and thousands of garages throughout the UK. So, over the years we have structured our garage businesses around the MOT testing system that we all  know now. MOT Testing protects millions of drivers by making sure that the majority of vehicles are kept up to a certain standard.

Thus making them roadworthy and fit for driving. At the same time keeping other drivers safe. Importantly, this dreaded “Coronavirus” put a temporary stop to testing. Giving drivers a bit of a leeway when it came to having their cars and vans tested.

I did not agree !

Of course as a garage owner I did not agree with this decision. In my opinion it was just playing about on the edges, when it came to restricting people to stay indoors. Thoughtfully, the original decision was so that key worker would not have to bother having a test until a later date! Also people who were in lockdown could do the same and not worry about going out just to get their vehicles MOT tested.

Fortunately, we have a certain type of person in the UK. Who always wants to live their lives accordingly. In other words if the car needs a test then they will have it tested. These were the people who helped us keep on a skeleton staff. Including one of our testers Dale Linton.

So over the past weeks and months we have furloughed some of our staff. However because of the support of our customers and steady increase in MOT tests we have almost returned to a full staffing level. Now that we have received this good news about full testing resuming on the 1st August then we will all be back at work.

069 Bentley Battery-Bentley Brooklands calls in to Pellon Tyres for a New Battery Fitting.

069 Bentley Battery

Beautiful Bentley calls in for a new 069 Bentley Battery fitting

On a  lovely sunny day last week. We had a very special car call in for the  Battery testing. Hence, the car was a Bentley. Subsequently, the owner told us a bit of the history of the car. For this reason he explained that the car was indeed a Bentley Brooklands . Because of special extras that the car was kitted out with. Thus , car shone in the Winter sun. Therefore, attracted attention from some of our other customers . Who were  in the garage at the time. As a result, I certainly had to go look and took this picture for my blog.

Incidentally the car was fitted with an 069 Bentley Battery, this is the most common battery fitted to these cars.

Brookland Cars continued Bentley’s relatively angular design theme. which was also used on contemporary Rolls-Royce vehicles. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Accordingly, the exterior design featured the classic Bentley waterfall grille . As well as dual headlights with wraparound parking lights. As in many Bentley and Rolls-Royce vehicles.

Then the Brooklands also featured the trademark descending boot lid and chrome B-pillars. Remarkably, the interior remained relatively unchanged . Thus, from previous Bentley models . With a more curvaceous design elements surrounding the leather-wrapped centre console. Moreover, the steering wheel and interior door panels remained unchanged.

Although the one major change . Would be the relocation of the gear selector to the centre console . For decades the standard practice among R-R and and Bentley models utilised a steering column mounted selector. The interior continued to be surrounded by ample wood grain which featured engraved, lighter-colored outlines on the door panels. In the U.S. prices for the Brooklands started at around $156,500… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bentley_Brooklands.

The 069 has now become a very popular battery size. It is fitted to many car models, including many imported cars, such as Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi and many more.

independent garages Test and Trace

The new NHS Test and Trace service, which was launched yesterday (Thursday 28 May) in England, has raised concerns about the possible repercussions for independent garages. The programme aims to help identify, contain and control COVID-19

independent garages Test and Trace

So, in my opinion one of the big problems from this pandemic is the “haves and have nots”. Of course we are all one country but there are significant differences in the amount of infections across the country. Cities and large suburban areas are of course the worst hit by this terrible virus. Here in West Yorkshire where I live then the virus is practically unheard of.

In fact I do not personally know of one person that has contracted the disease!  Isolation has also been a key to individuals not catching covid 19. When we see the terrible loss of life in places like London and Birmingham then it makes me feel thankful of where I live! In beautiful Yorkshire! Yes there has been cases in our area but with  much smaller population then we must be thankful. Why people want to cram into the huge conurbations of London I just dont know.

People go on about the quality of life and the wonderful things that London has to offer but two days is all I can stand. Like millions of other people I am afraid that I will be keeping away for the foreseeable future. Other negative things include the massive attempt to keep traffic off the roads of London. Of course in the disguise of a pollution tax. Well good luck to you all and just keep watching “The Yorkshire Vet” and dream of a better place to live!

London should have been shut down and close it off at the M25. This would have spared our economy and the rest of the country from been sucked in and having to suffer. But they didn’t and what happened happened?

independent garages Test and Trace

Anyone who tests positive for coronavirus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will need to share information about their recent interactions.

This could include household members, people with whom they have been in direct contact, or within two metres for more than 15 minutes.

People identified as having been in close contact with someone who has a positive test must stay at home for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, to stop unknowingly spreading the virus.

If those in isolation develop symptoms, they can book a test online or by calling 119.

Cheap Exhaust Pipes-Not Any More? Why are they more expensive on modern cars?

Cheap Exhaust Pipes

Different reasons why the Cheap Exhaust Pipes cost more.

Going way back in time. I can remember when we used to buy Cheap Exhaust Pipes in bulk quantities. Until changes started to happen. Because, car manufacturers became computerized . Therefore, they were able to change car designs and shapes at a much faster pace.

Cheap Exhaust Pipes

A modern exhaust part costs more but better made

The car models.  When I first started fitting car “Exhaust Pipes”. Were fitted for years before they were changed. Hence, cars like the Vauxhall Viva (remember the old vivas?), Vauxhall Cavaliers, the Minis . Of course, the VW beetles were also very common. Because these cars were built in such huge quantities we could buy the Cheap Exhaust Pipes in bulk and pass the savings onto the customers.

After the start up of Kwik-fit many smaller companies like my self started up as Tyre and Exhaust centres and because they were a relatively new concept we enjoyed great success and thrived, with Cheap Exhaust Pipes one of big sellers.

No internet selling exhaust pipes

Of course things changed with the advent of the internet. At first it did not affect us , but the old faithful car models began to decline followed by cars that were built in smaller quantities with different designs and engine sizes within the same car models. This meant different exhaust fitted to the same models, for example the same car may have a 1.1 or a 2.0 litre engine requiring a different exhaust system to be fitted. This change made it

Cheap Exhaust Pipes

badly repaired exhaust box two

difficult to keep a large stock of exhausts at Cheap Exhaust Pipes prices, because of the vastness of the stock we would require.

Cheap Exhaust Pipes

This brought a string of large exhaust wholesalers selling Cheap Exhaust Pipes to the fast fit centres and regular garages. Here in Halifax we had five companies who were wholesaling exhausts  and this meant that another string of costs were added to the price of an exhaust pipe to the general pubic and therefore a rise in cost.

Also better manufacturing methods made the exhaust pipes last longer

As time went by Cheap Exhaust Pipes were not as important to us fast-fit centres and we went onto other things such as servicing and MOT testing, also car batteries became a more important of our business, although we still fit exhausts, but nowadays they are better made and last much longer than they used to last, but better quality means that the motorists get a better deal with a better product, but at a much higher price.

How Old Are Your Car’s Tyres ? Heres how to check your sidewall.

How Old Are Your Car’s Tyres

How Old Are Your Car's Tyres

How Old Are Your Car’s Tyres

Because of the rise of the illegal partworn tyres. Then I think it important to explain “how to check the age” of your tyres. There are no strict rules about this subject. However it is thought that tyres start to deteriorate. Of course, when they ar five year old and above.
This knowledge is specially important if you have recently purchased a second hand car. Or were tempted into buying some second hand tyres. Tyre date codes were changed in the year 2000. Hence, from three digits to four digits. Therefore, pre-2000 tyres would be as such. say the age code was 261. Then this tyre was made in the 26th week of 1991. Moreover, after 2000 a tyre code of 5110, would mean that the tyre was made in the 51st week of 2010.
An old customer recently came into our tyre depot in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK. Fred as we will call him. Bought a second hand car from a lady whose husband had recently passed away. The car had been stood in a garage for a few years. Consequently, the car was in good condition. The mileage was 47000 and the car was a Vauxhall Vectra.

How Old Are Your Car’s Tyres

The vectra was in immaculate condition. However, Fred only wanted the tyres checking. The car had two makes of tyres fitted. Accordingly, two were Michelin zx and the other two were both BF Goodrich. The tyres had tell tale “cracking”. Hence, on the bead and shoulder area of the tyres. Cracking is a tell tale sign of aging tyres?
However, we were horrified to find that the Michelin tyres were 29 years old and the BFG were 25 years old respectively. Fred could not understand this. As a result we insisted that he took the car back from whence it came. On his return to the garage. Then the guy said that this could not be true. because he had the tyre fitted specially for Fred. When the car was purchased. How Old Are Your Car's Tyres
What had happened is now turning out to be a common thing. That is that second hand car dealers are fitting part worn tyres instead of new tyres. These old tyres were fitted as a cost cutting measure and could easily have killed the guy. Fred was extremely lucky?
The garage owner could see the errors in his way and fitted fred a new set of tyres. Furthermore, he never trusted a part worn tyre dealer again and always fitted budget new tyres onto his sales cars. Vauxhall vectras are big cars and a blowout was just waiting to happen,
Lastly, it is a good idea to check out the dates and the age of the tyres on your vehicles. Including trailers and caravans. If you have any doubt . Then change your tyres for new ones. It could be an accident waiting to happen.

23 Year Old Tyres-AA man spots nearly-new car fitted with a 23-year-old tyres

23 Year Old Tyres

23 Year Old Tyres

23 Year Old Tyres

This article is a follow on from my other part worn tyre blogs. Although, I am not certain, then I think these tyres would have been sold as part worns. For this reason, the best we could do at Pellon Tyres here in Halifax, UK, was a nineteen year old Michelin tyre. Consequently, this tyre was bought as a part worn by one of our so called customers.

The tyre was picked out on a service. For this reason, we always check the tyres. Especially of late? This is because of all the illegal part worn tyres that some of our customers are buying. When ever we show them what we find wrong about their tyres, they appear to be embarrassed? I am sure that they do know what they are doing.Buying a part worn tyre for £20 helps their household budget.

However, this is false economy and has been proven many times by organisations such as tyresafe.org.

Eric Roberts

The combined age of the four tyres fitted to the three-year-old car – believed to be fitted by the used car dealership that sold it – were a staggering 64 years.
