It has always been my pleasure to write about how different car makes respond in bad weather conditions. As a result, this little Mazda MX 5 is no exception. Of course a good place to look was in the Mazda owners club forum. Consequently, the MX 5 had good reviews when it came to driving in the snow. I have decide to write a post about an economy brand of tyre, because out of all the different makes of tyres that we sell from all over the World, then I think that INFINITY TYRES are in my opinion one of the best and most reliable of the cheap tyres, on offer in todays tyre market.

Over the many years that I have bought and sold tyres. The last car to come to us, with a noise problem was a VW GT TDi on a 2002 plate. Accordingly, the noise sounded like it was coming from all around the car. We road tested the car and indeed could hear the noise. He drove the car in the large car park of the local Co-op supermarket, with the window down. The car drove without the creaking noise.

Car Creaking noises-Cars are capable of producing many noises including “creaking”.Creaking is one of the noises, that really annoys the driver.Hence it is one of the most common “noise” problems that we are presented with here at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK.
Naturally, cars turn up with rattling, squeaking, banging and other sounds, that sometimes can not be explained by our customers. The last car to come to us, with a noise problem was a VW GT TDi on a 2002 plate. The car had done about 69000 miles. So the mileage was low for the year.
Thus, even when the car was driven down his drive. The problem was that the car was making an irritating creaking sound. Accordingly, the noise sounded like it was coming from all around the car.

As a result,we decided to check the cars past history. Finding, that the car was fitted out with some new” anti roll bar bushes” about two months ago. Hence, we replaced the cars “drop links”.
We road tested the car and indeed could hear the noise. He drove the VW fast and slow. He drove the car in the large car park of the local Co-op supermarket, with the window down. Naturally, he could hear the creaking quite clearly with the window down. We have seen this sort of problem before and so we suspected the front suspension could be the problem.The wishbone bearings could also be the problem. We decided to check that the drop link bolts were tight?
They were re-tightened and this solved the problem. The car drove without the creaking noise. The customer was highly delighted and drove off into the traffic a happy man.

All these new procedures have come about by a change in the MOT testing rules from May 2018.  So, from May 2018 the smoke test limit for Euro 6 and some Euro 5 diesels will be halved. This also ties up with the number of cars that have been having there DPF’s (Diesel particulate Filters) removed completely. So it will now be an MOT test failure if your vehicle does not have an EGR valve fitted and has had it removed.

Of course this will affect drivers who have bought a second hand car and are unaware of its removal. In a statement obtained by Garage Wire the online care repair specialists,  a Department of Transport  spokesperson said:

“We are taking strong action to stop the removal of DPFs. “We expect future changes to the MOT emissions test for diesel vehicles, due to come into force by May 2018, to make it easier to detect vehicles with failing or removed DPFs.”

Modern Formula One cars are mid-engined open cockpit. Hence open wheel single-seaters. As a result the chassis is made largely of carbon fibre composites. Rendering it light but extremely stiff and strong. Thus, the whole car, including engine, fluids and driver . Weighs only 605 kg. In fact this is the minimum weight set by the regulations. As a result, the cars are so light that they often have to be ballasted up. So to this minimum weight.

The cornering speed of Formula One cars . Is largely determined by the aerodynamic down force that they generate. Which pushes the car down onto the track. Of course, this is provided by ‘wings’ mounted at the front and rear of the vehicle. Also, by ground effect created by the movement of air. Under the flat bottom of the car.

A significant difference in the design. Hence, of the latest breeds of F1 cars . Is that they make far greater use of vortex “lift,” or in this case, down force. Since a vortex is a rotating fluid that creates a low pressure zone at its center. Creating vortices lowers the overall local pressure of the air.

Since low pressure is what is desired under the car. Thus, allowing normal atmospheric pressure to press the car down from the top. Creating vortices, down force can be augmented while still staying within the rules.

Formula One Cars to limit performance

The aerodynamic design of the cars is very heavily constrained to limit performance and the current generation of cars sport a large number of small winglets, “barge boards” and turning vanes designed to closely control the flow of the air over, under and around the car. The “barge boards” in particular are designed, shaped, configured, adjusted and positioned not to create down force directly, as with a conventional wing or under body venturi. They are designed so that air spillage from their edges will create these vortices.

The other major factor controlling the cornering speed of the cars is the design of the tyres. Tyres in Formula One are not ‘slicks’ (tyres with no tread pattern) as in most other circuit racing series. Each tyre has four large circumferential grooves on its surface designed to further limit the cornering speed of the cars.


Engines are mandated as 2.4 litre normally aspirated V8s, with many other constraints on their design and the materials that may be used. The previous generation of 3-litre V10 engines are also allowed, albeit with their revs limited and with an air restriction to limit performance.

Formula One Cars to use air restrictions

For 2007 the V8 engines will be restricted to 19,000 rpm with limited development areas allowed, following the engine specification freeze from the end of 2006. As outright speed and power are effectively being capped it is widely believed that teams will work on improving reliability, and the torque range of the engine to improve drive ability.

A Honda Formula One car, running with minimum down force on a runway in the Mojave desert achieved a top speed of 415 km/h (258 mph) in 2006. According to Honda, the car fully met the FIA Formula One regulations.

Even with the limitations on aerodynamics, at 160 km/h. Aerodynamically generated down force is equal to the weight of the car. Hence, the often repeated claim that Formula One cars are capable of ‘driving on the ceiling’ remains true in principle. Although it has never been put to the test. At full speed down force of 2.5 times the car’s weight can be achieved.

The down force means that the cars can achieve a lateral force. Consequently, of around four and a half times the force of gravity (4.5 g) in cornering.Thus, a high-performance road car might achieve around 1 g. Consequently, in corners the driver’s head is pulled sideways with a force equivalent to 25 kilograms. Such high lateral forces are enough to make breathing difficult. So the drivers need supreme concentration to maintain their focus for the 1 to 2 hours .That it takes to cover 305 kilometers.

Of course Goodyear tyres have always been amongst the world leaders in tyre development. The addition of soy-bean based rubber compound  is their latest innovation. So, soybean oil-based rubber compound is helping Goodyear enhance tyre performance in dry, wet and winter conditions.

When I was much younger. I was fortunate enough to attend a six week course. Thus, at the now closed Goodyear factory in Wolverhampton in the UK. This course covered all aspects of tyres. From production to selling them. This was to set my life in the tyre industry.

Therefore I have always been a keen follower of Goodyear tyres and their latest releases into the tyre world. Including this new soy-bean revelation. For years and years tyres were made from the same old materials in the same old tyre factories. But this all changed with the need to stop pollution and support a better more environmental friendly planet.

Governments paid billions to auto makers to come up with more emission  friendly vehicles. Hence the gauntlet was also thrown out to tyre companies. As a result people like Continental came out with new materials to make tyres greener with a better rolling resistance and lighter in weight. As far as Continental were concerned then they experimented with “Dandelion” sap. The white gooey sap from the “weed” known as the dandelion in the western world, contained a sap that was very similar to the molecular structure of rubber latex.

Just like Continental, a  Goodyear team of scientists and engineers created a sustainable type of tread compound using soybean oil. Like the dandelion this is naturally derived, cost-effective when grown in large quantities, carbon-neutral and renewable.

Of course when mixed in the silica-reinforced compounds now used in manufacturing certain tyres, such as winter tyres. This also improves manufacturing efficiency and reduces energy consumption.

By employing soybean oil in tyres. Goodyear found a new way to help keep the rubber compound pliable. Especially, in changing temperatures, a key performance achievement in maintaining and enhancing the vehicle’s grip on the road surface. Winter tyres perform much better in the cold because of the addition of this silica based material. Silica makes the compound much more flexible in cold weather. So, Enhancing the grip of winter and all-weather tyres.

Other tyre companies to come up with similar ideas include Yokohama and the use of “orange peel oils“.

In my opinion Michelin tyres are still the Worlds leading tyre maker. Thus, offering tyre product excellence.

Michelin have in my experience . Always been the most expensive of car tyres to buy. Of course, the old saying of “you get what you pay for”, springs to mind . Therefore,we always find that it is the same type of well educated customers that ask for Michelin by name. Opposite to the “how much are they” brigade.

Michelin have always put expertise into the research and development of their tyres. Hence, making them hard to beat for quality.

 Wheel bearings are a common thing to fail on modern cars, including the Nissan Qashqai, because of the pressure exerted on the wheel bearings?

Your front wheel bearings are located inside the front hubs . Thus, of your car coming in pairs, there is an inner bearing and an outer bearing . Of course, that are located inside your front hubs. Where the wheel fits onto. The wheel bearings need much lubrication . So are packed with special grease.

The job of the bearings is to allow the cars wheels to turn freely. Of course, the Ball Bearings support a thrust load and a radial load. Consequently,the thrust load comes from the weight of the car . Also, the radial load comes from the forces that are applied to your when cornering. Bearings sometimes come separate .Having to be pushed out and the new ones pressed in by a hydraulic press. Subsequently,  many come as a complete hub unit with the bearings already assembled. Of course,as in the case of this Nissan Qashqai.

As a result, the usual complaint about noisy bearings . Is that the customer can hear a whirring noise from the front or back of the car. Naturally,the cause is usually because some dirt or grit has entered the bearing and mixed with the special grease that is supposed to protect the bearings in the first place. Ryan Linton took the car for a test drive and soon recognized the problem on the Nissan Qashqai to be the wheel bearings.

The customer booked the car in for the wheel bearings to be changed.

The week later the customer left the car with us and Ryan changed the complete hub with the bearings included. Wheel bearings are a common thing to fail on modern cars, including the Nissan Qashqai, because of the pressure exerted on the wheel bearings due to the heavier cars and extra low profile tyres and wheels all adding extra pressure to the bearings, both front and rear. Apart from being noisy the bearings can have play in them which is also an MOT failure here in the UK.

Using new Nissan Parts the Nissan Qashqai was completed and road tested and the noise was cured for a happy customer.
