Tyresafe Campaign about part worn tyres; are just not worth the money ?

eric roberts‘s insight:

Pellon tyres are a member of Tyresafe and are concerned about part worn tyres

For all tyre safety matters this is the web-site to look at . So inwardly digest what they are saying.

Before buying Part worn tyres you must look at what they have to say?. To prove a point, the Tyresafe Campaign . By buying sample part worn tyre products from all over the country. Thus, working out the real worth of part worn tyres . Hence,  the facts are startling. As a result, you should not be buying these tyres. Unfortunately, not only could they be dangerous . But” pound for pound” they are not worth the money . Consequently, that you will pay out for them .

What constitutes a part worn tyre to be sold legally?

Many local council trading standards officers . Are pursuing part worn tyre outlets . Frequently, prosecuting the ones that are breaking the law. Not least Warwickshire County Council. Part worn tyres must be checked for cuts, bulges, exposed tyre cords . So, should have no foreign bodies embedded in them . Such as nails and screws. For this reason, they should be clearly marked as part worn tyres. Including, with a minimum tread depth of 2 mm all round. Before they can be sold.

Trading standards officers often pretend to be genuine customers and go round buying part worn tyres, to be tested. Janet Faulkner, Head of Warwickshire Trading Standards Service said:

Tyresafe Partworn Campaign

“Whilst all the tyres we purchased passed the tread depth test, only one was stamped as ‘part-worn’ and two failed because of tread separation or slow pressure loss, neither of which would be obvious to a consumer straight away. Our advice is that it’s always safest to buy brand new tyres, but if you are buying part-worn, make sure the tyre has been tested, check the tread depth, look out for lumps and bumps and keep an eye on the tyre pressure”

For this reason, we have had many of our own customers . Who have paid up to half the price of a cheap new tyre . Than for a part worn. Thus, only to find out that the tyre has only lasted them for a couple of weeks. Complete false economy? This The Tyresafe Campaign is most welcome?

BMW Mini Suspension- Has a Rear Suspension Collapse ? Due to bottom links.

BMW Mini Suspension

Is this a common BMW Mini suspension fault ?

When I opened my garage doors on Saturday. Then a dark green BMW Mini had been left in the car park overnight. As a result, the owner had left a note . Thus to say that she would be calling in that morning. At the time we had not noticed . That the rear drivers BMW Mini Suspension was not straight . But leaning in at the top.

BMW Mini Suspension

BMW Mini Suspensionpicture showing top and bottom links(off the car )

When we eventually got the BMW Mini on the ramp,(Saturday is a very busy day for tyre customers) we were astounded to find that the problem was caused by a broken bottom arm link, a part of the BMW Mini Suspension. The bottom link had completely snapped in two. This caused the wheel to pull in at the top making the car un-drivable.

This link is part of the cars multi-link system that is now common on modern vehicles such as the BMW Mini, and is used to give the cars independent suspension to all four corners of the car. The BMW Mini Suspension top and bottom links are part of that system. The lady customer can not remember running over any objects but with all the snow that has fallen in the Halifax area this winter, it is possible that she may have run over a large stone that was buried in the snow without knowing and snapped the link in two. This year has been a particularly bad year for broken springs and other suspension parts. The video that I have included in this post clearly shows the bottom link in action, it is the part that is a silver colour at the bottom of the BMW Mini suspension.

The new part has now been ordered and we will be fixing the BMW Mini this week.

More reading…

“Does multi-link suspension have any disadvantages? In short, yes… Such systems are more complex and incorporate more components, making them more expensive to design and produce. For this reason the systems were first introduced by luxury brands. That said, lower vehicle production costs and higher customer expectation have more recently seen the technology filter down to many large and mid-sized mainstream vehicles. Development of the multi-link suspension systems is ongoing. For example, Italian company Magneti Marelli (most famous for its auto electronics) is making significant headway in producing cost-effective multi-link systems for small cars. Its new designs incorporate flexible links, the benefits of which are said to allow fewer total parts, simplified bushing designs and reduced noise transmission into the passenger compartment”..http://www.carpoint.com.au/advice/2009/what-is-multilink-suspension-7533

MOT Government Crackdown

MOT Government Crackdown

MOT Government Crackdown

This is another thing that makes my blood boil. Dodgy MOT testers and MOT garages. Since DVSA computerisation, than actual physical visits by the MOT inspectors have decreased depending on your colour band. Hence. from when the traffic light system of points came into operation. This means that garages and MOT testing stations have a colour allotted to them depending on the operational or disciplinary when inspected by the DVSA staff. The list is as follows-Green=Low risk operator…..Amber=Medium risk operator…..Red=High risk operator…..grey=Unknown Operator.

Therefore the colour reference of our MOT testing station is green. For this reason, we will have less visits from the DVSA inspectors. The red MOT testing stations will have more visits because of there poorer status. This crackdown is very refreshing to the let’s say more honest garages.

Part Worn Tyres Targeted-Calls for part-worn tyre ban following trading standards sting

Part Worn Tyres Targeted

Part Worn Tyres Targeted

Part Worn Tyres Targeted

This is great news. Especially for us tyre retailers that run a legitimate business. As a result, we are all sick to see all the back street tyre shops. Hence, that have recently opened, selling part worn tyres. We all know that most of the old tyres that these people sell are “Illegal”. Even more annoying, is that members of the public buy this rubbish for their vehicles.

I see this every day. Drivers think that they are saving money. However, it has been proven many times that this is false economy. In addition, we have had many disillusioned drivers calling into my depot here in Halifax UK. Disillusioned, because the tyre that they have just payed £20 for, only lasted them for two weeks. As a result, we examine many of the tyres that we remove. Hence, after being bought as part worn tyres.

Most of these tyres were the pits? They were just over the legal limit with cuts and cracks all over the tyres and many our well over the age limit. Including the sidewalls and the tread areas. The people who sell these tyres should be banned from been in business. In fact I have visited countries such as Egypt. These back street places resemble such third world countries.

Part Worn Tyres Targeted

As an industry we have fought for years to make tyre safety a priority. Including, tyre tread depth and rules about repairing tyres and the age which tyres should not be fitted. People who sell illegal part worn tyres should be closed down. I frequently pass these places and it makes me cringe. Thus, when I see regular motorists have these tyres fitted to their cars. Also I often see taxis having these death traps fitted. As I have said on many occasions. Then I do not mind the sale of “legal” part worn tyres being fitted. But looking at the state of these places then I very much doubt that anything about these companies will be carried out legally. Including, public liability insurance and many other things that we legitimate businesses have to provide to be able to trade with a clear consciousness.

Finally, it is good to see that trading standards are making some inroads into the problem. more reading  https://www.pellonautocentre.com/dangerous-tyres/

Broken Springs- How would you know if your car had a broken spring?

broken spring due to bad weather

Winter is a bad time for motorists to suffer broken springs

This is the time of year that many motorists experience their car having strange banging and rattling noises whilst driving along.

More reading...AA patrols have reported a big increase in the number of broken springs – in the year to February 2011 we saw more than 21,000 breakdowns related to spring failure.

Micra McPherson strut sowing the oil leak (dark part)

We are certain that the motorists are breaking their springs as the hit pot holes and pavements that are covered in ice or snow. It always seams to be this time of year when their suspension takes a pounding from the bad winter weather. We have also noticed that we have had more MOT test failures due the very same problem.

Some car owners do not notice that they have a broken spring until it comes to having their car tested on its annual MOT, but the damage is noticed most in winter. Once again we think it was caused by their car running into the kerb or some other raised object or hole, hidden by snow and ice, its easy done.

Broken spring is due to ice and snow and probably a kerb stone ?

So if you hear your car rattling or banging coming from your car it will probably be a Broken Spring on Car or shock absorber that you broke struggling home in the recent snow fall that we have just had.

Your Car Engine Oil-Then and now: how engine oil has evolved

Your Car Engine Oil

Your Car Engine Oil

In recent years, many motorists must have noticed the growth in use of synthetic oils. Synthetic oils are made to a more highly refined specification. Hence, that of  standard conventional mineral oils. The improved refinement gives a higher protection and performance. Thus, of more conventional mineral oils.

For this reason the synthetic oils have a capability of giving modern vehicles better engine running at the top performance. Consequently, car engineers have been able to develop different types of oils for different engine types. Gone are the days that you can put any oil in any engine.

It is important to replace the recommended oil for your vehicle with the correct viscosity for your car. Therefore car manufacturers have all the engine oil specification listed in the handbook.

In short, the difference between conventional oils and older traditional oils. Is that traditional oil is just made by a regular method of refining crude oil. Synthetic oil is made by using advanced refining methods. As a result, this refining gives the synthetic oil a higher purity and a better quality oil. Synthetic oils have molecules that are more uniform. This gives more lubrication and less friction. Traditional oils, have molecules that are inconsistent in size. Therefore generating more engine friction.

Your Car Engine Oil

A typical synthetic oil container with 5w-30 oil

Going back in time. I can remember that we had one oil tank that would be sufficient for all type and models of cars. The Castrol oils truck would come round when required and top up the tank. The tank contained 1000 ltrs. Now here at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax UK, we have to keep a few different types of  synthetic oils in stock. This is to make sure that the correct oil goes into the correct vehicle according to the car manufacturer’s recommendations.
