Quality Car batteries- And other top tips for driving your CAR in the wet winter conditions

Quality Car batteries; driving the car in winter conditions

One of the most obvious but important parts of winter driving is to prepare  for the bad weather that will be certain to affect us.

Every winter we are bombarded by bad weather, and most of us will get caught out and unprepared for the journey back home from shopping or from work. This happens time and time again to many motorists who get caught out in heavy rain and flooding similar to the weather this week, or a really fast and heavy snow storm. I f you check your car out you will eliminate most of the worry of bad road conditions, and feel safer and glad that you were prepared.Qaulity Car batteries

  • It always pays to have your car checked at a Unipart Car Care Centre for a pre winter check. This takes the form of checking your levels for antifreeze to make sure that it is the correct strength to withstand freezing temperatures, also your screen wash and oil levels must be checked. The early dark nights also call for your lights checking, how many times do you see a car with only one head on, that looks like a motorbike from a distance ?.
  • The most important things to check are your tyres. I know that I harp on about it, but please buy a set of winter tyres, this alone will help you on wet and snow covered winter roads and give you much more confidence when traveling out to work or to the shops. Many more drivers are now switching to winter tyres and are spreading the news to their relations and friends, they really do make a massive difference when driving on roads in winter time.

Check the depth of the water before going through in your car

Other advice now relates to flooding. Flooding has now become a common scene here in the UK. When you approach a flood please take care not take your vehicle  in too deep. Try to avoid the flooded road if possible and if you must go across the water make sure you stop and check your brakes on the other side, a minor point is that water could damage your exhaust pipes and catalytic converter a few weeks later. Another part of the car that is neglected in winter is your car battery. You can easily be caught stranded away from home if your battery lets you down. If your vehicle is over 5 years old it may be better for you to change the battery for a new one before your old battery lets you down. Remember it always happens when you are away from home and will cost you less to replace it , than expensive breakdown charges. if you do have to buy a new battery do make sure that you chose Quality Car batteries. They often come with a better warranty and will last longer

Garage Training-Rathbone Training | Garage receives award for nurturing its apprentices

Garage Training

Garage TrainingPellon Tyre and Auto Centre has received the National Apprenticeship Week Employer award for engaging six young people in apprenticeship training and employment

Garage Training

I must admit that I was Highly delighted, when I heard the good news from my manageress Debby Bastow, the one on the left? Training staff is by no means easy when you have to run a busy garage. However, with help from Rathbone training. Hence ,we managed to fit the training in between jobs. Of course, you also require some keen members of staff.

In this respect, I am very proud in way that all my staff have performed and are so keen to expand their knowledge. Naturally, it has not always been plain sailing. However, with the help of Rathbones, we have always pulled our staff through. These guys are all young and have to cope with other problems that we all associate with young people.

Our main training guy is Adrian Milner, Motor Vehicle Tutor for Rathbone Training. Adrian says “I have worked with Pellon for several years and the relationship with Rathbone Training has secured dedicated staff for the business that have all benefited from progressive training. Our work with them has also allowed the company to continue to develop and gain a good return on investment.”

Therefore, it is no surprise, that we as a company are doing very well. Accordingly, in my opinion then the well being of your staff are in the top three of your successful business priorities. Consequently, your staff are the beating heart and soul of any business. Accordingly, the staff should be rewarded at every opportunity. Small financial rewards and even by just saying “how well they have done” is always a good thing.Especially, coming from the manager or boss.

Eric Roberts and “well done to my staff and for the help of Rathbones in the Yorkshire area.

Basic Automotive care-and Other Important Car Care Tips

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care;Owning a car or truck carries with it the responsibility of ownership.

If you want your vehicle to give you years of hassle-free service, it will be necessary to provide Basic Automotive care and routine maintenance and upkeep to keep it running well. Otherwise, your car could leave you stranded at the most inopportune moments. That is why it is important to buy cars from verified and quality car dealers such as Carzoos if you want to

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care;Topping up your oil should be a regular maintenance job

avoid frequent repairs.

For starters, ensure your car has the proper amount of oil in it at all times, which is a Basic Automotive care . On the engine is a stick with a ring or handle on it with an oil can displayed on it. Check your oil routinely by removing the dipstick. The dipstick can be found as a handle along the top of the engine with an “oil can” picture. Remove the dipstick, wipe clean, reinsert into the tube and remove again to check the oil level. If it’s low, add a quart of oil to the engine, usually another cap that says “OIL” on it, most of the time it can be found on top of the engine itself. Your oil should be changed every 3500 to 5000 miles to keep your engine running efficiently.

Another Basic Automotive care, is Checking your coolant system, while cool, will also keep your car running great. The temperature gauge on your dash board will usually tell you if you have a cooling system problem. Most engines are designed to run below 210 degrees F, anything over that is considered overheating. You can add coolant or water to your system using the overflow tank in the engine compartment, but only when it’s cool. Beyond adding coolant, if you are experiencing engine overheating, go to your local mechanic. There are four possible causes of engine overheating-a bad water pump, a bad radiator, a bad thermostat or a ruptured hose along the cooling system path. The replacement of the water pump and radiator are expensive but it’s usually a once every 150,000 miles replacement. Some cars happen sooner, some happen later, but they all will have it happen.

Basic Automotive care

Tires are good for 40,000 to 50,000 miles before they need replacement. But checking the air pressure periodically is vital. Each tire will have a recommended pressure on the tyre itself. Purchase a tire gauge at the local auto parts store or big box store and check your tyre pressure. Most convenience stores have an air pressure machine that will allow you to fill your tyres for a fee, once again an important piece of Basic Automotive care . You can also swing by a local tire shop or garage and most will check your air pressure for free. When your tires begin to lose their tread or become bald, it’s time to purchase new tires. Once you have purchased these tires, have a maintenance plan in place to rotate and re-balance every 10,000 miles or so. This will ensure the longest life from your tires.

Basic Automotive care

Basic Automotive care

Brakes are also an important part of Basic Automotive care . While you cannot routinely maintain your brakes, you can prevent unneeded repairs by taking your car to an automotive shop when you first hear that brake squeal. That squeal is the brake wear indicators telling you that your brake pads need to be replaced. If you continue to wait and ignore the brake wear indicators, you will have the additional cost of replacing the rotors(discs)as well. If identified early enough, your rotors can be placed on a machine and resurfaced instead of having to be replaced.

Basic Automotive care

These are just a few Basic Automotive care parts of the routine maintenance items you can check for yourself to keep your car in good working order. Finding a mechanic you can trust is also an important factor as well. Seek out recommendations from friends and colleagues for a quality mechanic to help guide you through your car maintenance issues.

Low Weight Golf battery-Lithium-Ion Is this the dream Golf Battery ?

Low Weight Golf battery; Will this new golf battery cost too much ?

Low Weight Golf battery;I have been selling the Lucas Golf Battery for many years now. I can remember the days when golfers tried to use the regular car batteries to power the early golf caddy’s because the first GEL batteries were too expensive to replace.

It is usually the case that when a thing first comes onto the market, then the price is high, this is what happened to the first Gel batteries and then the AGM batteries were produced

Low Weight Golf battery

Pro Golf battery 33 amp

which brought down the price, now these batteries are even cheaper because of the online battery shops and e-bay.

Golfers are a peculiar breed of consumers, they spend top dollars for the latest putter or the best balls, but do not want to buy a good battery they always go for cheapest battery on the market and then complain when the battery wont do 18 holes. They also fail to look after their golf batteries, some just chuck their battery in the boot of their cars and then tootle down to club house for a drink before leaving for. They very often leave the battery in the car boot for days before remembering to charge the battery up.

Another thing that golfers do is that they do not keep their batteries charged up over the winter period. This is one of the main reasons that they return their batteries to the dealer claiming that their battery is faulty, we normally give the battery a really good charge and they usually recover, it was just that they kept the battery in a freezing cold garage over the winter period, without charging the battery and keeping it charged all winter, as you are supposed to do.

New type of golf battery

Low Weight Golf battery

Low Weight Golf battery

The market has now introduced a brand new type of golf battery called the Low Weight Golf battery-Lithium Golf Batteries. This battery is much lighter than the conventional Gel or AGM golf battery, and should appeal to all golfers, because the new batteries are lighter they are more easily transported and easier to handle for the older retired golfer.

This new battery is also more powerful and has been designed to be the same size as the lead acid batteries that they will replace. For example the Low Weight Golf battery-Lithium batteries come in two sizes the 16 amp that will be suitable for up to 27 holes and the 22 amp for up to 36 holes. These batteries have life span of up to six times longer than the conventional battery and are 25% lighter , they also come with a 2 year warranty against manufacturers defects, this shows the confidence in this latest product.

The new Low Weight Golf battery-lithium golf battery comes with its own charger and connections including a new bag, once again they are made to the same size specifications as the old lead acid batteries. One more important point is that these lithium batteries will do 2000 cycles compared to only 300 with Gel and AGM batteries. The downside is that this product is more expensive than the other products on the market, but is far more superior and on top of the job…

Mobility Scooter Batteries-Will Lithium-Ion batteries Replace Lead Acid Batteries

Mobility Scooter Batteries

New help for Mobilty Scooter batteries users

The advent of the “Lithium-Ion” battery will be a great relief to many users of the mobility vehicles. The 12 Volt Batteries that are

Mobility Scooter Batteries

Mobility Scooter Batteries may come out in Lithium-Ion shortly

traditionally used in this type of vehicle have always been a problem. Especially for the people that use these machines for getting about on. I would hate to think of the amount of these machines that have been caught out with a flat battery? Stuck half way on a journey and having to be rescued by a friend or relation.

Also, they have the problem of the weight of these batteries. Even the 12 volts 12 amp AGM Battery are hefty. Especially relevant, to injured or physically challenged person. The 18 amp and 26 amp are even very heavy to an able body person, so things have got to get better and for some mobility vehicle owners they just did.

From Mars landing to Mobility Scooter Batteries

One such use was presented to an American company.  Yardney Technical Products who were asked by NASA to design a new Mobility Scooter Battery. This had to be  much lighter and stronger than the

Mobility Scooter Batteries

This micro -hybrid battery will be used on mobility scooters in the future

lead acid battery. This new type of battery was to be utilised for the new stealth aircraft and later for space exploration. Now the battery has been developed for more everyday uses such as mobility scooter batteries.

The lithium batteries that are now available as Mobility Scooter Batteries. Mobility users come in the form of a single 24 volt 10 amp lithium battery. This replaces two a Lucas LSLC 20-12 10- lead acid batteries. The single battery only weighs 2.4 kg compared with the pair of Lucas weighing in at 12 kg, very much lighter in weight. The battery also requires a special charger which is a 24 volt 3 amp including all the connectors. The big advantage of the new Mobility Scooter Batteries is that they will do 2000 cycles. Compared to 300 cycles for the Lucas lead acid battery, and although the initial cost is higher, you will be saving in weight and much more power in the long run.

For more information about the lithium-Ion battery.

“The Mobility Scooter Batteries works on ion movement. This is  between the positive and negative electrodes. In theory such a mechanism should work forever. Furthermore, cycling, elevated temperature and aging decrease the performance over time. Finally, batteries are used in demanding environmental conditions. In addition, battery manufacturers take a conservative approach and specify the life of most Li-ion between 300 and 500 discharge/charge cycles”… http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries

Pirelli Carlisle Plant-4,000 jobs secure after Cumbrian Pirelli plant go-ahead

Pirelli Carlisle Plant

Pirelli Carlisle Plant

Pirelli Carlisle Plant

This announcement, will be great news for the Pirelli employees in Carlisle Cumbria UK. Almost all the tyre production. Hence, here in the UK was shifted abroad to both Europe and China. Consequently, this only left us with a couple of tyre production plants remaining. Indeed, this came at a time when all British industry was watered down. In my opinion the auto trade in general was badly affected by job losses.

Britain was to become a service industry. Massive swayes of industry were closed down and relocated to other countries. I suspect that it was all part of the EU’s plans to dumb down the British economy and weaken our position. Undoubtedly, as one of the world’s greatest innovators. Thus, when it came to engineering and manufacturing.

As a result of the dumbing down, we have being left with vast areas of waste and derelict land in places like Sheffield here in south Yorkshire. Once the greatest steel manufacturer the world has seen.

This is one of the reasons that so many people voted for Brexit. Anyhow good luck to the people of Cumbria and let’s hope that we can now attract many more engineering and manufacturing companies back to the UK.

Pirelli has been given the go-ahead to expand its Carlisle factory, in a move the firm says will secure almost 4,000 jobs.

Lamping Batteries-New lighter Lithium-Batteries may be the answer.

Lamping Batteries

Much lighter to carry

lamping  batteries

It has always been a problem for the guys.Hence, that go out at night in the countryside looking for things to hunt. Usually vermin. This rural activity is often referred to as Lamping Rabbits. The general idea is to stalk the animal say a fox. Consequently, by using a lamp with a strong beam. So is pointed at the animal. Thus, the animal will then freeze in the bright light. The animal is then shot. For this reason, this is usually aimed at vermin. Such as foxes, rats and in some areas rabbits. Hence, that may have a population problem and the numbers need to be culled. The majority of lamping is carried

out by responsible country people, that respect nature and are just doing a job.

The lamp that they use is usually powered by a 7amp UPS battery, the type that is used in backup power systems, but these small lamping batteries are lead acid batteries and therefore start to become very heavy, especially in the dark when you are walking through undergrowth and in hilly woodland. Some lampers also carry a spare battery or two, so they tend to get very heavy.

 Lamping batteries

One of the great things to come to the market in recent times. Is the invention of the Lithium Ion Battery Pack. This was originally invented in America. For use on American military planes. Such as the Stealth bombers and more recently to supply batteries for the Space exploration projects for NASA.

This created a brand new battery technology that did not contain lead or lead acid. The new batteries became much lighter and more powerful, making the situation perfect for use as lamp batteries.

These lamping batteries come in two sizes the 6 ah and the 9ah these batteries are 12 volt batteries and the 9 amp lithium replaces the 18 amp UPS lead acid battery and the 6 amp replaces the 10 amp UPS lead acid battery. These batteries are much more powerful than there lead acid counterpart and are much lighter to carry around. The battery charger is also supplied and must be used with the lithium lamping batteries normal lead acid charger will not work with the lithium battery. The downside will be the initial cost , but the lithium battery comes with a two year manufacturers warranty and is more powerful and will last much longer with an added bonus of been very much lighter to carry, in my opinion the lead acid UPS battery will not have a look in compared with the new battery the lithium battery

A NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) battery pack can store perhaps 100 watt-hours per kilogram, although 60 to 70 watt-hours might be more typical. A lead-acid battery can store only 25 watt-hours per kilogram. Driving in Winter

Goodyear Ultragrip 8- Winter Tyres from Pellon Tyres, Halifax Yorkshire UK

Goodyear tyres do it again with the Goodyear Ultragrip 8

As all my readers know by now Goodyear tyres are one of my best respected tyre companies and are for ever developing more tyre products to make for safer driving in winter conditions. This will help motorists to drive more safely and help offer a better product to us European drivers who will eventually have to fit winter tyres from November to March for safer winter driving.

Many EU countries have to fit winter tyres now including Bulgaria,Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium. IT is only a matter of time before we here in the UK will be following the same regulations as the rest of Europe and a good thing it will be too making our roads much safer in the winter months. A thing that I have been advocating for years.

This new tyre was introduced to us at a tyre launch in Seville Spain and announced as the Goodyear Ultragrip 8. This new tyre from Goodyear tyres offers the motorist more grip while at the same time giving a shorter braking distance which combined offer much better handling for the winter conditions.

Goodyear Ultragrip 8

The new Goodyear Ultragrip 8 winter tyre

 The Goodyear Ultragrip 8

Of course, is the first directional tyre using the latest generation of Goodyear’s highly effective 3D-BIS Technology throughout the entire tread pattern. Goodyear’s patented Three-Dimensional Block Interlocking System (3D-BIS) allows an increased number of sipes in the tyre’s tread.

The more sipes, the better the grip: A high sipe density gives extra grip on ice and snow because sipes provide edges which literally bite into the snow and ice for strong grip and traction as they open up before coming into road surface contact. To provide excellent handling and braking performance on both wet and dry roads however, the blocks need to be stiff and solid. For this Goodyear Ultragrip 8 engineers have developed the ‘3D Interlocking Effect’ of the sipes.

Inside each sipe, the walls have raised pyramids and holes. When the tread blocks come into contact with the road the sipes lock tightly thanks to this special waffle shape. This provides the required block stiffness for excellent handling and steering response on dry and wet roads”… http://www.goodyear.eu/uk_en/news/94003-Ultragrip_8/index.htm

Genuine Waste Tyres-Tomato and egg waste may end up in your tyres

Genuine Waste Tyres

Genuine Waste Tyres

A sack of carbon black ready to be used

Genuine Waste Tyres

I say “genuine waste” simply because it is waste that we humans throw away. Hence, that is being used to add to tyre compound. Although, we use “carbon black” at the moment. Then it is carbon black that is petrol based . Therefore, is classed as a pollutant and bad for the economy. Although the tyre experiments have been carried out. Thus, by mixing the household waste. Including, eggshells and tomato skins. Other tyre companies are also experimenting with different materials. So to reduce the amount of carbon black in the tyre compounds mix.

Eric Roberts

An automobile tire is composed of about 30 percent carbon black, which adds durability to the rubber. Carbon black is petroleum-based, however, meaning that it isn’t entirely eco-friendly. That’s why scientists have been experimenting with an alternative – namely egg shells and tomato skins.

Fitting Winter Tyres-for your Families Safety and winter mobility

Fitting Winter Tyres

There is no doubt about it almost all of Europe including us here in the UK are now prone to very sharp cold and snowy conditions during the winter months. The effects of Global warming are now starting to take there toll and climate change is starting to happen big style. We have all seen the effects of the heavy rains and flooding that have hit most countries of the World, with devastating and disastrous effects. In my opinion it will be only a matter of time, before we all get caught out in bad winter conditions, such as mega freezing conditions and blizzards.

Fitting Winter Tyres

Snowfall in the Pennines Fitting Winter Tyres is important for safety

North Americans are used to getting two foot of snow and in general prepare their cars for the winter to come, fitting winter tyres is one of the priorities that prepare them for the winter to come, we have all seen the recent snow fall that affected New York after the Hurricane struck the East coast. This could also be the norm for Northern Europe with colder winters and heavier snow falls, so we too should be well prepared, by fitting winter tyres, after all it makes good sense to be safer and able to get home or to work if snow is in the weather forecast.

Many countries in Europe have got be Fitting Winter Tyres by law and in my opinion this law should be rolled out across the rest of the EU countries.

A good a article to look at is by a Skiing enthusiast and motorist Otto Imken, who gives good advice about the best top 5 winter tyres…

“The snow is starting to fall in parts of North America and full-on winter is right around the corner, so it is time to start thinking about all things icy: Do I need a new jacket? Where did I stash those goggles? Is it gonna be Utah, Colorado, Montana or B.C. this February? And of course, what kind of snow tires should I get?”…http://www.liftopia.com/blog/top-5-snow-tires/

Also more reading about Fitting Winter Tyres

“Thanks to my job, I have had plenty of experience on snow tires, and I can’t believe I ever lived without them. Snow tires make an enormous difference, and if I still lived in a place where it snowed, I wouldn’t even consider driving without them. Well, that’s not true… I would consider it, because I’m cheap. But I have no doubt that snow tires make you safer. If you’re on the fence about investing in snow tires”… http://cars.about.com/b/2012/11/14/should-you-buy-snow-tires.htm#comment-193772
