Leisure Battery- to Leeds University ends in a nice surprise?

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013

Wanted to buy 110amp leisure battery

Leisure Battery; When the phone rang for the hundredth time on Thursday it was a call from a well spoken gentleman with a well educated Scottish accent. He wanted to buy a  leisure battery to go

into his motorhome. He chose us from our battery web site www.batteriesontheweb.co.uk, and also the fact that we were from Halifax and we were not too far away, as prompt delivery was important.

He turned out to be head of the Devonshire Hall Cumberland Road, part of Leeds University. The university had broke up for the Easter term and he found out that he had a dead battery and therefore required a new one.

I arranged to meet him outside the Devonshire halls at 8.30 am on the following morning with his new battery, as he said that he has a tight schedule. This is just an example of the personal service that we give to our online battery service. While I was waiting I took a walk through the gate into the Devonshire halls outside area. I could not believe my eyes at the outstanding beauty of the building what a shame it is hidden away from the public, the students are so lucky to study in such outstanding architecture of the buildings.

Sent back old leisure  battery for re-cycling

The guy arrived a little late and he asked if I would drop the new leisure battery off at the back of the buildings into his garage, I obliged accordingly but when he opened his garage door there was a second surprise, the guy owned a 1967 BMC 1100 car in white. He pulled out the car so that I could take a photo for my blog, and gave me two old batteries for re-cycling, This was a great trip out for me (how sad).

Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres

Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres- Your Cars Safety Starts with Winter Tires

Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres

Tyre Safety-Winter Tyres

Of course, “Car Safety” is one of my lifelong objectives. As a result, I have always had a good living from selling tyres. Another thing that has happened during my stint as the owner of a tyre business. Hence the development and increased braking capabilities of the modern cars. This is the thing that has driven the tyre manufacturers to making their tyre products safer.

The largest progression in my opinion. Thus, has been the development of winter tyres. Winter tyres have become more important for safety reasons. As expected, these tyre developments also include improvements on tyres that fit the larger sport saloons and SUV vehicles. Previously, many tyre manufacturers only made a handful of winter tyre sizes . The mighty Michelin were no doubt world leaders using motorsport as a tool to make many new tyre developments. Including, new tread patterns and tyre compounds.

Michelin were followed by many of the other leading tyre companies. Now winter tyres have become a science in their own right.  All- season tyres are also a much improved product. This video shows the safety aspects that you can expect from todays modern winter and all-season tyres.

A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES-A048 are a winner for Yokohama tyres

Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013

recently developed by Yokohama tyres to beat the tough conditions on such rallies and eventually help produce the winner, a great achievement for A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES.

Yokohama tyres are much involved in the field of motor sport and this is why they are amongst the Worlds leading tyre makers.

A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES

Yokohama Advan tyres in action on an F4 car racing at Snetterton in Norfolk.

One of their latest feats was to supply the tyres to winning car driver Toshi Arai taking part in the Rallyof Scotland, driving his Subaru in the Production Cup category. Although this happened at the end of last year ,I have not yet had time to do a A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES tyres blog.

The weather on this rally was very changeable, with heavy rain and sunny spells for most of the race . This made the going on the gravel stages very slippery and tough and not very consistent. This caused many drivers to spin out of control and there were many crashes and competitors having to drop out. The main tyres used in this event were the gravel tyres the A053, this was recently developed by Yokohama tyres to beat the tough conditions on such rallies and eventually help produce the winner, a great achievement for A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES.

Here at Pellon tyres this week we helped a customer out of a dilemma, he had bought a set of new alloy wheels and Yokohama A048-R new tyres. These A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES are made by Yokohama to suit all motor sport needs. These tyres will give a superior control in both wet and dry driving conditions and are specially important to the amateur track day drivers. Any way this customer called out a mobile tyre fitter to fit his A048 YOKOHAMA TYRES but the fitter could not fit them as they were too difficult to fit.

We were able to fit his Yokohama tyres ?

He then brought his tyres and wheels to us at Pellon tyres for us to have a go. Alex and the other lads had to problems fitting and balancing the wheels they were truly professional. Our customer is going to use the wheels at a track day in Oulton Park, driving his wonderful Honda S 2000 sport car. We hope he has a great days racing and thank him for some pictures of his car for my blog.

Apollo-Power Maintenance Free batteries-This is an important thing to watch out for when buying a battery online

Apollo-Power Maintenance Free batteries

Apollo-Power Maintenance Free batteries and Lucas car batteries require less maintenance

This is an important thing to watch out for when buying a battery online. Some companies sell inferior products and claim that their car batteries are MF

(maintenance free) When there not. An MF battery will be sealed and have no sign of filler caps on top of the batteries at all; they will have a flat top. Although no lead acid battery is sealed? If you laid one on its side, it would leak acid. Only AGM and Gell batteries are indeed sealed.Apollo-Power Maintenance Free batteries

Therefore, 12-volt lead acid Apollo-Power Maintenance Free batteries.Hence, will use up a large percentage of liquid in the battery. Because of the constant charging and dis-charging.Thus, Coupled with the heat from the engine almost boils the acid and causes evaporation, with the loss of liquid and the need to top the battery up with “distilled water” just like in the old days you will regularly be topping up your battery.

The liquid in your Maintenance Free is a diluted mixture of sulphuric acid and water known as the electrolyte. The process turns into a gas mixture of oxygen and hydrogen and escapes from the battery, thus you will have to top the battery up.

Apollo-Power Maintenance Free batteries; MF car battery a must for the busy driver

In a conventional battery, (This is recognised by having open screw tops in each cell )  we then add “distilled” water to keep the battery topped up to the correct level.

Maintenance, free is known as MF batteries.Hence, such as Lucas batteries and Apollo-Power Maintenance Free batteries. For this reason, all, use a different type of lead alloy in the makeup of the cells, made of a calcium lead alloy known as calcium/calcium (C/C). MF car batteries also use calcium alloy of lead and not a lead antimony alloy as in the cheap batteries. So it reduces the gassing as in the typical lead acid battery. The fact that there is no water loss allows the battery to be sealed thus eliminating the need to have to top your battery up, a great benefit. You do not need to top the battery up, once fitted the battery will never require any maintenance. Thus it is an MF battery.

Avon Racing Tyres-A good old British tyre company

 Post Updated 23rd Dec 2013

Avon Racing Tyres are a good old British company

It is good news for supporters of British hill climb as Avon Racing Tyres have taken up the gauntlet as sponsors for this seasons events.

Avon Racing Tyres

Action picture from the latest race meeting at Snetterten race circuit in Norfolk UK, as the drivers exchange half way through the race, this is all done in a split second, note the car is an Aston martin and was fitted with Avon Tyres , a great sign of a great tyre.

Avon Racing Tyres have always been a favorite of mine , over the years. I have visited their headquarters in Melksham many years ago but I have always been overlooked as one of their dealers. The new season started in February at the Leicestershire circuit and goes on to cover all the other leading UK circuits including Jersey and Guernsey.

Avon Racing Tyres sell to the competitors, but this year have set new competitive prices to enable new entrants to have a go at hill climbing. Avon will subsidies the prices on specific hill climb tyre sizes and compounds.

Avon tyres were bought out by American tyre company Cooper tire and rubber co.

They are also involved in GT racing tyres. This started back in 2006, when Avon Racing Tyres were the sole supplier to the GT cars. Avon have brought out a new one for this seasons event and are saying that the new rubbers will be quicker than there predecessor and have been developed and tested over the past two years.

See the GT race car in the picture. In my opinion their tyres for the normal cars have not changed very much over the years and although Avon Racing Tyres take part in motorsport, they have not passed much onto their normal street cars, and I still class them as a good mid-range tyre but they are still very popular amongst older drivers.Avon Racing Tyres

Marine Batteries-delivered to customers moored on boats in Hull Marina and Norfolk

Marine Batteries

Marine Batteries; lovely Summers day to deliver boat batteries to a boat

This spring has been one of the sunniest on record.Especially, here in the UK. Hence, we in West Yorkshire have seen wall to wall sunshine for the past three weeks.

marine batteries

The image shows, a bank of Marine Batteries that are to be found in the boat power supply.

We took a phone call.of course, from a guy who owned a sailing boat. Which is moored in the Marina in Hull, East Yorkshire. He wanted to buy some AGM marine batteries for his ship. As expected, he needed them urgently. because he was about to sail the next day. Thus, had to catch the first tide out to sea,(all strange stuff to a land lover like me).

I rang him back with the price of the batteries,

Hull Marina in the height of Summer is a beautiful place to visit and is one of the Hull Attractions. I think that sometimes I am very lucky to visit such wonderful places when I am out and about delivering batteries to our online customers.

He haggled a bit, but we agreed on a price and off I went that afternoon down the M62 motorway to Hull. The day was a beautiful sunny day and a pleasure to be out and about. I arrived in Hull and parked up at the Marina hotel car park, met the guy with the boat. We exchanged his money for the Marine Batteries, and off he went a happy man with his Marine Batteries, to sail away into the sunset “as the song goes”

Marine Batteries

I had a walk around the marina a took a couple of pictures for my blog, a great day was had, and we ended up with a happy customer. We have also started delivering our 12 Volt Battery (AGM marine batteries) to Norfolk where there are many boat owners. Some of the rivers are enormous, and the ships can sail well inland. I must admit though that this also gives us a problem in finding the remote areas where the boat owners live; we get there in the end.

Pirelli Tyres Cables- The giant Italian tyre company also make Electric Cables

One of the founders and the best Pirelli Tyres Cables

Pirelli Tyres are one of the founders of the manufacture of both tyres and for underground electrical cables the famous Pirelli Tyres Cables company, were founded in Millano in Italy in 1872

Pirelli Tyres Cables

Pirelli Tyres Cables fitted to this Racing Mini Cooper S at Snetterten race circuit

by Giovanni  Battista  Pirelli.

Pirelli as a company have been manufacturing  for over well over 100 years. Pellon Tyres in Halifax has not been around for that long, but in all there experience in the tyre trade Pirelli tyres have always given car owners a good service and a good mileage, and are a top brand name that commands much respect and much loyalty amongst the Pirelli Tyres Cables . This is indeed valuable praise from such an established tyre dealers who to this day stills sells Pirelli  at their Halifax based tyre depot.

Pirelli radial tyres were generated from the need of Lancia rally, who wanted to make a stronger lower riding radial tyre for their Lancia Stratos rally car, this need lead the   designers to develop a much stronger tyre construction, both with a wider tread area and with a much lower side walls. This design became very successful and became a boost to the lancia racing team, indeed Porsche began to copy Lancia and also started to use this Pirelli tyres for its racing division.

This new tyre design lead to the creation and introduction of the Pirelli Cinturato.

This tyre was developed in the 1950s and was originally made from a textile belted construction. This tyre gave great comfort and road holding qualities but as for all textile construction tyres was a little low on mileage and could not compete with some of its main rival, Michelin tyres, who were streets ahead with their steel belted X range of tyres.

Dual Mass Flywheels- a pain in the neck ? Riginally to smooth out diesel engined cars heavy clutches

Dual Mass Flywheels

watch out if your clutch is slipping you may have a dual mass flywheels gone as well?

Dual Mass Flywheels-As with most tyre and auto centres these days we multi-task and carry out all types of repair work, we are blessed to have mechanics that are capable of doing the other more

Dual Mass Flywheels

Dual Mass Flywheels-A recent DMF that we have fitted

difficult kinds of jobs.

One of the main problems we are finding at the moment is the number of cars that are having clutch problems. This is no real problem to us and we take it in our stride, but the most frightening thing that is becoming prevalent is the increasing number of cars that are requiring Dual Mass Flywheels.

What are dual mass flywheels

In the old days we had a simple clutch plate mechanism that would cost perhaps £200 to £300 to repair, from a small to a large car, now thanks to modern technology we have clutch and flywheels that are part of the same unit. The problem is that you can diagnose a faulty clutch but not a DMF Problems (dual mass flywheel). This seems to affect all makes of vehicles we have fitted them on VWs and Toyota’s this week alone, also on Mercedes.

The idea came out to accommodate the modern demands of the lightweight diesel engines, modern motorists demand their diesel engine runs just as smooth as a petrol engine, also giving better fuel consumption. The DMF acts like a damper between the engine and the gearbox to give a smoother ride when changing gears on a manual transmission system.

Basically, there are two types of DMF. One is made up of a primary and secondary flywheel containing springs and cushions. There is a ring between the outer and the inner flywheel that allows them to slip, this is to stop any damage to the transmission when any torque loads exceed the pressure of the vehicles rating of the transmission.

Dual Mass Flywheels

Of course, the ring is the weak spot and can wear out when too much continual engine loads are applied. We find that this could be the reason that problems seem to occur mostly in people carriers.

Of course, the second type has planetary gearing. Specially made for vehicles with low-revving engines. Hence, that give out stronger vibrations when doing low revs. This type should give much smoother gear changes on diesel engines, similar to the same performance as a petrol engine, also giving a better fuel consumption.

I hope that this is informative and that you don’t need one replacing, but if you do look forward to a big garage bill DMF Failure.

BMW 320i Winter Tyres

BMW 320i Winter Tyres

There is no doubt, that BMW owners, would benefit greatly by fitting winter tyres at the right time of the year. Hence, we find that it is the third owner of the BMW’s that ignore the thought of fitting winter tyres. This type of vehicle is usually still in great condition. Thus, even when they reach old age. This car is a very powerful machine. This makes it a double requirement to fit winter tyres.

The BMW range is well equipped with wide summer tyres These cars are very capable of reaching high speeds. This also makes them more vulnerable in snow and icy weather. A double whammy is the cars excellent braking system. Any driver of these large and powerful cars will know that the braking systems are very keen and accurate.

In my opinion, winter tyres are a must and important safety factor. The same goes for cars of a similar size and power. The car in this video the BMW 320i xDrive M Sport was tested at Douglas Park – Therefore, watch as we drive completely up a 170 metre ski slope. As a result, which has a gradient of 10-15 degrees in 300mm – 400mm of snow. The car was tested on snow which has 200mm under lying layer of ice which has a temp of -12 degrees.
