eric roberts‘s insight:

In my opinion finding the best car servicing  garage is a no brainer.

One of the best places to have the Best car servicing done  is the one where a friend or relation gives you a recommendation, from previous experience. Failing that you should be

Best car servicing

Look out for the Unipart sign foe good service and quality parts for your Best car servicing

looking out for the presentation of a garage that will give you the Best car servicing in your area. Does the garage look good? Most proud garage owners rally look after their premises, this is not always true but in general it will work out that way. Some back street garages don’t look too good but the work they turn out can be very good.

Another good way is to see if the garage is in some sort of trade association. Here in the UK we have a main organisation that is called Motorcodes. If the garage is a member of Motorcodes, then you will be able to guarantee that the garage has been vetted by no other than the RAC, and operates a fair price policy and an arbitration service in case you do have a problem that cannot be solved and develops into a dispute.

Also look out for other things such as do the garage have a waiting area or a reception, where you can wait for your car in comfort, whilst the work or MOT test is been carried out on your car, all these points will usually lead you to a Best car servicing centre, that you can trust and remain loyal to for years to come. But in my opinion one of the bast way to be sure of good Servicing a Car is by word of mouth recommendation, it is still the best way to determine how good the garage is.

Continental Tyres UK Ltd-Spies In Your Tyres? This Gizmo Will Help Your Car Drive Itself

Continental Tyres UK Ltd

Continental Tyres UK Ltd

A few years back, on a week long bus tour of Continental Tyres UK Ltd AG’s technology and engineering centers in Germany, one item attracted more attention from journalists than nearly any of the other whiz-bang connected-car stuff: A simple tire pressure monitor.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Continental Tyres UK Ltd new TPMS and more idea

This article written by Bob Gritzinger. Therefore, is all about the new ideas and inventions. Thrown about by the Auto industry at the moment. Consequently, this idea from Continental Tyres UK Ltd has now been tested on truck tyres. But at the moment I don’t know whether it has been a success or not. I suspect it will be effective. Because the concept of a monitor. Hence, vulcanised into the tyre. Relaying out information electronically about such things as tyre pressures and the inside temperature of the tyre is obviously of great benefit to the driver of the vehicle.

The device will be able to aid truckers. Because it will also be able to send the driver information. Thus, about the load that the tyre is carrying. Including  the traction details of the tyre, with this giving the driver the knowledge that the full load and road conditions can be checked as the truck is rolling along. I don’t know what sort of signals theIce road truckers would be getting from their in built TPMS tyres?

Continental Tyres UK Ltd

The new Continental Tyres UK Ltd valve sends out the information. Hence, out by wireless signals. Therefore, is picked up in the cab by the driver on an in-car system very similar to the ones now where the TPMS Valves signals are fitted to the wheels. Continental Tyres UK Ltd says that this is all part the future that may introduce the driverless vehicle to our towns and cities. If an object penetrates a

tyre the system will pick up the loss of pressure and stop the car in some sort of safe area and the problem reported and fixed.

Illegal tread tyres- in car crash that killed two young girls – Norfolk Eastern Daily Press

Illegal tread tyres

BBC News Illegal tread tyres in car crash that killed two young girls Norfolk Eastern Daily Press Norwich Crown Court heard that two tyres on the car had illegal tread and all four tyres had been wrongly pressurised which a police accident…

This fatal accident is just part of the reality that sometimes strikes home when we find out the horror that can result in motorists operating on Illegal tread tyres and not checking their tyres at regular intervals. We

only have to be in the wrong time and the wrong place, for an accident to happen. When our cars are in good condition and serviced at regular intervals we have a better chance of getting out of a sticky situation when driving.

AT first I did not want to blog this accident because of the fatalities, but I think it important to point out that these things happen and it could be that if this car had good tyres at the correct Air Pressure, then the outcome could have been different. We in the tyre trade are always preaching to motorists about checking their tyres and tyre pressure, but accidents like this are proof that bad things can happen if you do not service your car and check the tyres at regular intervals .

I would like to pass on my condolences to these girls family.

Car Servicing Times-When to Get Your Car Servicing Done | Unleash the Monster

Car Servicing Times

Car Servicing Times

If you purchase a used car or an older car that doesn’t have the technology to inform you when something is needed, it’s even more important to keep track of the car servicing times and  schedule.

eric roberts‘s insight:

CAR SERVICING Times -where are we now?

During the time that I have owned a garage Car Servicing has seen many changes. The change though is not so great. We are what I would call a local garage. Servicing and repairing our customer’s cars. So, the same as we have done here in Halifax for the past 25 years.

Of course, the thing that has changed the most is the increase in competition. So, to overcome this we have had to keep everything up to date.Things like technology. Including the garage appearance. Probably the biggest change is the way that the garage has to be promoted.

Car Servicing has developed and modified over the years. Especially as regards lower emissions in recent years. Generally we can keep up with the level of technology and computers. Required to service and repair these cars. Hence, the appearance of the garage is also very important.

These days 60% of our customers are probably ladies. Having taken over the role of many male duties. Because more and more ladies can now drive and have jobs depending on their own cars. Meaning that the ladies usually now own their own cars. Therefore they are the ones that have to deal with the garages. Thus, should anything go wrong with their cars.

This brings me to the point of the necessity to have a clean smart reception area. Including, facilities for all the customers not just the ladies. Subsequently, we call ours the TV lounge. Offering free drinks (coffee and tea) along with magazines. Now we have free Wi-Fi for the customers to use while surfing the internet. Or playing games on their tablets and phones. All these things are necessary. Especially, if you want to retain your hard earned customer base. Although our margins are a lot lower these days. Garages should make every effort to make their premises as smart as possible.

Car Servicing Times

The one thing that in my opinion has changed the most over the years other than repairing and Car Servicing Times, is the way we now have to market our businesses. Years ago the bigger you were, the bigger the advert you would place in your local newspaper and the national garage chains would advertise in the national papers, there was some sort of packing order. I will always remember the first full page advert that we took out on a Friday afternoon and the following day we had cars queuing down the road, it was most embarrassing because at that time we did not have infrastructure to cope with all that work. It was a learning curb that I will never forget.

Car Servicing Times

Car Servicing Times are important and not to be missed

Also radio and TV advertising was affordable to the bigger garages and Auto-centres, but price pressure from other better off industries put the prices up and an end to that format of advertising exposure.

Now the internet has taken over the battle ground, with almost every garage trying to get internet exposure and battling to get on first page of Google for as little cost as possible. This is where I am at now and as if you do not already know it is a long hard struggle.

The thing to me is that it is hard to know what affect all the hard work on your garage, not like the old days with a full page newspaper advert. I suppose the fact that we are still busy is reflecting on the work that we have to put in to Google, Twitter and Facebook and car servicing and repairs will still go on regardless.

Bridgestone Tyres Reveal BMW i3 Electric car Tyres In New Tyre Sizes

Bridgestone Tyres
bridgestone tyres

BMW Group announced partnership with Bridgestone tyres, in which one of the world’s largest tire manufacturer has been selected to develop a range of tyres for the BMW i3 electric car.

eric roberts‘s insight:

New bridgestone Tyres Sizes for BMW i3 Electric Car

Japanese and Worldwide tyre company Bridgestone tyres have teamed up with BMW, the German car maker, to create a new type of tyre which will give an excellent rolling resistance and aerodynamic performance for use on the new i3 electric cars that BMW are producing. The tyres from Bridgestone Tyres will be as the Ecopia EP500 Ologic tyre, and will be available in 4 completely new tyre sizes.

This is a completely different concept to the tyres that have been developed over the past say ten years, which were fatter (more width) and smaller in 15 inch sizes and then 16 and 17 inch sizes, up to what we have today In 18/19 and 20 inch sizes, all of coarse with corresponding  aspect ratios. The aspect ratio is the height of the tyres as a percentage of the width, if the tyre has an aspect ratio of 60, then the tyres height is 60% of the width, the smaller the aspect ratio the wider the tyre will be in relation to the height of the tyre.

Bridgestone Tyres-new sizes

The new sizes will be mind blowing to us in the tyre sector, because they go against all that we have previously seen as far as tyre technology has gone. Bridgestone Car Tyres are even claiming the new tyres are even good in the winter weather and in fact will be making some of them in the Blizzak type winter pattern.

This will be a modern version of going back in time, when older guys like myself used to fit tyres with sizes such 155×16, 185×15, 175×16 and many more with a narrow tread and

tall sidewall, the new Bridgestone EU tyre sizes will be 155/70×19, 175/60×19, 155/60×20 and 175/55×20. The tyre’s long contact patch (relative to its narrow width), revolutionary tread design and compound still ensure outstanding grip in both wet and dry conditions.

In my opinion this is just another excellent tyre innovation from Bridgestone Tyres and will help to keep all the tyre industry players on their toes and also creates much interest in the new revolution that we are having in the auto trade.

Yokohama explains tyre sizes. But in a funny – Normally a boring subject- this time a so not boring way!

Yokohama explains tyre sizes

Yokohama explains tyre sizes

Most people know how tyres are made. Tyres are made from many different parts that are basically stuck together. So, In the trade we call this “vulcanisation”. In other words in order to bond all the various components together. Hence, the not quite finished product needs to be vulcanised. This involves running the tyres through a curing machine. Of course, which bonds all the different components together. Things such as beads, sidewalls and the tread area. This process also adds all the markings and traction patterns on to the surfaces. Such as tyre size and load ratings.

Yokohama explains tyre sizes

Over the years the development of car tyres has become.pretty amazing. Tyres are remarkable things and taken for granted. Thus, no matter how big your car is, it is supported by four patches of rubber. Each not much bigger than your footprint. Despite all the mechanical and computer technology. Now inside a modern car, it is still reliant on good quality tyres. Of course, with decent treads that are filled with the correct air pressure.

Tyre design also includes the ability of the tyres tread to disperse the water quickly enough to maintain a grip on the road. With bald tyres then aquaplaning occurs. Aquaplaning is when a vehicle skids along the surface of the water. Subsequently, giving you very little control over the direction the car is going.

Most drivers will never know anything about tyres, Including the tyre size and sidewall markings. However here  is Jake to explain about it.

Eric Roberts

Toyota Yaris Clutch ProblemYokohama explains tyre sizes

To work out the size of your car tyres’ footprint, you need to know that the area is approximately equal to the car’s weight divided by the tyre pressure. For a 2-tonne car, that means the footprint of each tyre is about 7 inches wide by 4.75 inches long. Not very big at all, and remember, while the brakes work to stop the wheels turning, it is the friction between the tyres’ footprint and the road that will actually stop your car moving.

Of course, everyone will need new tyres at some point. But understanding tyre sizes can be difficult ( and BORING). So we’ve made it easy and fun. Hence, with the help of journalist and tarmac rally ace Samantha Stevens and drift racer Jake “DriftSquid” Jones. Put simply, tyre sizes are written on the tyre side wall. Or on your car’s tyre placard and handbook.

Tyres are measured like this- the width across the tread is in millimeters. The sidewall number (known as the profile or series) is a percentage of the width.Wheel size is measured in inches. Those are the three numbers you need to know — and need to pronounce like Sammy does in the video – to sound like you know what you’re talking about in a tyre shop. And yet, Yokohama has a colour system which makes choosing the right tyre tyre is so much easier than figuring out the size – go to www.yokohama.com.au and see for yourself!

Rolling resistance is a word that we in the tyre World have been familiar with for many years now. It is only in recent years that the words have come to be synonymous with

saving energy and less fuel consumption. The Conti Eco Contact 5 is the new fuel saving tyres from the Continental tyre company.

In recent years tyre manufacturers have published the rolling resistance of each individual tyre that they bring out. The tyres have to put the fuel efficiency on the left hand side of the new labels, the best starting at A and then downwards.

Over the years Michelin tyres have always been amongst the top performance when it comes to energy saving tyres with Bridgestone a close second as shown in the figures bellow from the excellent: The daily green website:

The best performer was the Michelin Energy Saver A/S, which delivered 53.8 mpg in a Prius, meaning a 4.74% improvement. The Bridgestone Ecopia EP100 was next, with 53.5 mpg and a 4.12%. On the other hand, both the Michelin HydroEdge with Green X and the Goodyear Assurance ComforTred (terrible name) actually did worse (down .59 and 2.64% respectively) than the control tires… http://www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/blogs/cars-transportation/low-rolling-resistance-tires-461009

Bridgestone Blizzard Winters-New Winter Tyres from Japans Bridgestone Tyre Company.

Bridgestone Blizzard Winters

Bridgestone Blizzard Winters

Bridgestone tyres bring out Bridgestone Blizzard Winters

eric roberts‘s insight:

Contrary to this article we find that UK customers DO buy winter tyres

Bridgestone tyres have indeed brought out  new Bridgestone Blizzard Winters. In my opinion this is a step that the other leading tyre makers are making, a more varied amount of winter products.

One of our biggest sellers here in Halifax was Yokohama “W” winter tyres they were very popular sellers.

Another reason that I do not agree with this article is because we are now much more conscious about changing our summers  with winters  because of the colder winters that we are now experiencing.

We have now been operating a “winter tyre hotel” for the past three years, not only does it work for us but it keeps in touch with our customers at least twice a year when they come in for theirs changing.

Bridgestone Tyres introduce a new SUV Winter Tyre

Blizzak SUV winter tyre LM-80

Bridgestone have upgraded their SUV winter tyres range to include the Blizzak LM-80 EVO. Although these tyres have been out a couple of years now, they have proved to be a leader in the SUV winter tyre market.

The old words when describing Bridgestone Blizzard Winters certainly flow when introducing this wonderful tyre product. In line with most other tyre manufacturers, Bridgestone Blizzard Winters have designed

Bridgestone Blizzard Winters

Bridgestone Blizzard Winters an excellent product

these with many sipe patterns to help get rid of the slush and wet that we associate with bad winter driving conditions. They have also added silica to the tyre compound to enable them  to remain flexible when driving in freezing temperatures.

The design is topped up with by adding  a centre rib and extra shoulder  blocks to the  tread area, for extra strength when cornering, giving these larger vehicles better handling and wet braking when driving in winter conditions.

Which Tyre Choice-New tyres, Remould tyres or Part Worn tyres?

Which Tyre Choice

New tyres, Remould tyres or Part Worn tyres? Which Tyre Choice

To start off this article, Which Tyre Choice? I am going to say that in my opinion. So, you are better to use remoulded tyres (re-tread tyres have a new tread bonded to the old carcass remould tyres area full bead to bead re-mould ). Hence, than to buy un-regulated part worn tyres. If the part worns are sold under the 1994 laws that govern part worn tyres then that is fine. The 1994 legislation comes under the following law… The legislation

The Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994. Set out minimum safety standards for the supply of part-worn tyres. To comply, it is important that you and your staff are fully aware of these Regulations.

“Under the Regulations. it is illegal to supply any part-worn tyre that is capable of being fitted to a motor vehicle or trailer unless the conditions detailed below are met”..

Which Tyre Choice–The full law can be seen on the following link… http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1994/3117/regulation/7/made

This only applies to the UK of course; the States will have their own legislation. Remould tyres are a good substitute for the older and vehicles that go off road. Remould tyres were at one time very popular. Older cars and vans and the increase in cheap imported new tyres from China. So, put an end to many remoulding companies here in the UK.

Which Tyre Choice

Tyre remoulding plants like this are very clean and modern and produce a safe product, would this be your Which Tyre Choice

Another good point about remoulds. Consequently, is that most tyres fitted to aircraft (large or small) are fitted with remould tyres. Of course, and the same applies to trucks. Many of the trucks that you see hurtling down the highway. Will be fitted with remould or re-tread tyres. You may have noticed the strips of tread. That are discarded at the side of our motorways, these are the tread that has stripped off the tyre carcass usually due to the tyre having a puncture or it has been run under inflated which has caused it to overheat and therefore come apart.

Which Tyre Choice-New tyres are what they are

brand new tyres and therefore will be extremely safe to use .the failure rate of new tyres is very low, in fact I have not seen a genuine faulty tyre for a few years now. Remould tyres are also very well made by the few companies that remain making them, the failure rate for car and van tyres is a bit higher than new tyres, bur still not worth bothering about. As I said earlier the problem I have is the sale of un-regulated part worn tyres, otherwise you will be safe on new or remould tyres. For further Which Tyre Choice and tyre safety information see…www.tyresafe.org

22 Amp Mobility Batteries saved the day for Child’s Christmas Present

Two new 22 Amp Mobility Batteries saved the day.

Every now and then we get a letter from a customer who needs our help. Sometimes we do not know if they are genuine or just some person trying it on. Last Christmas we learned about

22 Amp Mobility Batteries

22 Amp Mobility Batteries ready to go

a lady in Lancashire called Eileen. I bumped into Eileen when delivering a battery to a customer’s house and she was in the property next door, tending to her friends horse (cleaning the stables out). Eileen looked very short and I noticed that she had no legs.

When Eileen saw the battery signage on my van she came over and told me that she had a wheel chair but could not afford to buy any. This tugged on my heart strings and as soon as I got back to Halifax, I sorted out two new 34 amp Lucas mobility batteries at took them back to Lancashire to give to Eileen as a Christmas present. I had to leave the batteries with the guy next door because Eileen was not at home, but a couple of days later, I received a very nice thank you letter in the form of a Christmas card from Eileen.

mobility batteries

Child’s tri-cycle fitted with his new 22 amp mobility batteries

Then a similar thing happened just before this Christmas 2013. We received an e-mail from a guy in Devon who was making a three wheel electric bike for his sons Christmas present.  He had problems with another online company who had sent him the wrong batteries. For some reason the company could not be contacted online or by telephone. I also tried out this company, but could not get any reply.

Mobility batteries sent out to Devon

His son was a very ill young man and so this bike was going to mean the World to him as he needed one with a small electric battery driven engine, his son could not peddle like a healthy child could. The guy was desperate and had no money and asked us for help. I remembered what had happened to Eileen the year before and so decided to give him two 22 Amp Mobility Batteries, which fitted his bike.

The guy in Devon was over the moon and could not thank us enough for our help. His son had a Christmas present that worked thanks to the 22 Amp Mobility Batteries and I was pleased to be able to help someone in distress.
