What to do when Hyundai car battery is on its last legs

Boston Herald

I have a 2005 Hyundai Tucson with 90,000 miles on it. I’ve never had a problem since

Hyundai car battery

This Lucas battery suitable as an Hyundai car battery

I purchased the vehicle, but I’m worried the battery will fail sometime soon because of its age.

eric roberts‘s insight:

When do you change your battery ?

This is a good article from the Boston Herald and raises some good points. What we tend to forget is that not everyone lives in the cities and towns, and so some drivers may be worried in case their battery fails them in an unusual spot in the middle of nowhere. Especially in a massive country like the USA.

In my opinion there are a few different options. I think that if the car was mine I would take it to a good Autocentre or garage and have the battery tested. We test the customer’s battery when the customer’s car is having a service and we inform them if the battery needs replacing. The garage would test the battery and if in any doubt, and then replace with a New Car Battery.

Another option would be to keep a new12 Volt Battery in your garage, or any other handy place where you can lay your hands on it in the case of an emergency. You could keep a new battery in the boot of your car but there is always the chance that the battery might fall over and spill the acid, so that would not be a good idea.

I would say though that if your 2005 Hyundai Tucson with 90,000 miles on it has the original Hyundai car battery fitted , then you should buy a new Hyundai car battery so that you will have peace of mind in order that the old battery will not let you down. Also when you do finally buy your battery, do not necessarily go for a cheap car battery. You should be looking for a reputable make, do a little research and you could save yourself some money by buying the new Hyundai car battery online, such as the excellent Lucas Classic Batery.

Start-Stop Batteries- now a new type of Micro Hybrid Battery from Johnson Controls

Start-Stop Batteries now Micro Hybrid Battery-Johnson Controls

As I have stated many times Johnson Controls Aldershot are the World leading car battery makers, they now have battery production plants all over the Planet. Johnson Controls make the batteries that we sell under the name of Lucas and Numax.

Their latest project was the invention of “ star-stop” technology, now in use on many new car models in the States and Europe. These batteries can cut fuel bills by as much as 8% and they work by the car engine stopping and then restarting at say a busy road junction, saving the car engine from idling and therefore saving fuel.

Start-Stop Batteries

The new Micro hybrid  battery

The next challenge from Johnson Controls was to make cars even more fuel efficient, without the use of the massive cumbersome batteries now used on the latest EV vehicles.

New 48volt Micro Hybrid battery are the next generation from Johnson Controls

This new 48 volt micro hybrid battery will be to power the cars electrics while the car will also require a small 12 volt starter battery similar to the 054 battery that is used today. The new battery uses Lithium-Ion technology, but is far more compact for car use than its predecessors.

This new micro hybrid  battery is expected to lower emissions and improve the cars fuel economy to help make a greener planet. Another good point is that this battery is expected to be a cheap battery compared with the massive price tags on the Lithium-Ion batteries used on the EV electric vehicles that are in use today.

This new 48 volt micro hybrid battery looks like being a winner and is expected to save 15% on the cost of fuel a claim that is interesting car makers all over the World…More Reading…

The new micro hybrid battery is expected to be on show at the North American national Auto Show in Detroit, on the 14th January 2014. According to Alex Molinaroli Johnson Controls president…

“Johnson Controls sees opportunities for the development of evolutionary energy storage systems that offer even more fuel efficiency than Start-Stop at less cost than a

hybrid or electric vehicle,” said Alex Molinaroli, president, Johnson Controls Power Solutions. “Even as Start-Stop vehicles become part of the mainstream in Europe and start to take hold in the U.S., Micro Hybrid technology has the potential to deliver the next level of fuel efficiency along the spectrum of vehicle performance, reaching upwards of 15 to 20 % in fuel economy.”

I personally am looking forward to the challenges ahead in the battery world and Johnson Controls appear to be one of the leading players.

Goodyear tyres award-All started With Charles Goodyear in the USA.

Goodyear tyres awardGoodyear tyres award

All started by Charles Goodyear in the USA.

Goodyear Tyre Company had its seeds with Inventor Charles Goodyear in 1834. Charles first invented a tyre valve, but was unable to impress any other business with his invention and could not get financial backing. Goodyear tried for many years to transform the smelly gum that came from Brazil, into any kind of rubber product. He desperately needed a powder that would soak up the wetness of the rubber.

He was getting very desperate and one day bumped into a boyhood friend who had a small amount of capital to invest in Goodyear’s experiments. He started using magnesium as a drying agent for the rubber and with the help of his family made hundreds of pairs of waterproof overshoes; I suppose they were similar to the ones that we get today for gardening. The problem came with the summer heat, before he could put them on the market and sell them; the whole lot melted because of the heat, the family were devastated.

Undeterred he carried on with his experiments  and started to add quicklime and magnesium and also boiling the mixture, his endeavors were getting   closer and closer to the rubber that he wanted. Charles was then making rubber ornaments and started to paint them and decorate them in any way he could. One day he was trying to clean the paint of one of his pieces with nitric acid and later discovered that the acid had affected the rubber making it turn black and smoother, this was the best rubber he had ever made.

After several more years of failure and wasted backers money Goodyear was no further on. He couldn’t get the process of “vulcanisation” and all his work kept melting in the heat. Goodyear tyres awardCharles became destitute and for the next years suffered many setbacks in his life.

He carried on with his experiments and finally achieved his best result when he applied steam, under pressure for up to six hours at a temperature of  about 270 degrees F. This was his best rubber mix yet and his wealthy brother in law became interested in Goodyear tyres award product to use in his textile mills making shirts using the rubber on the ruffles made for “dandies”. This sparked off a great demand for rubber products.

At the time Goodyear could have become a millionaire, but he was still more interested in making other products from his new found invention. Rubber was to become what plastic is today. Go0dyear eventually died in 1860 in poverty, but later the loyalties from his rubber products kept his family in relative comfort…More Reading… http://www.goodyear.com/corporate/history/history_story.html

Charles Goodyear not related to the Goodyear tyres and rubber company.

The Goodyear Car Tyres company had nothing to do with Charles Goodyear but continued to grow into one of the largest tyre companies in the world. The rubber industry will be employing over 300,000 people in the USA alone.

Goodyear tyres award in my opinion is truly a great company and has received many honours in its time for product innovation creating over 324 inventions between 2010 and 2012. Because of this they have been awarded the prestigious accolade of being one of the top innovators, by Thomson Reuters…http://thomsonreuters.com/. Truly a worthy tribute to a great tyre company.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Tyre safety will go from strength to strength

I must admit I find it very refreshing to see the good work that Tyresafe.org  is contributing to road safety. I joined Tyresafe because I felt that the normal tyre depot owner had nowhere else to go to help in the quest for safer tyres and safer roads.

In the past I have joined other organisations such as the NTDA London (National Tyre Distributors Association) but found myself very disillusioned by everything else that was going on other than road safety.

When I was a member and went to a couple of meetings ,I found myself listening to people talking about golf tournaments and organising a day out at Redcar races, but not very much about tyres or tyre safety. It was not long before I resigned and left them to their own devises.

I then learned about Tyresafe.org and was impressed with their commitment to road safety and tyre things in general, like this Tyre Safety Video . So I decided to join and soon became a member. I have been impressed ever since with their drive and enthusiasm towards the tyre industry and to tyre safety, this is the type of organisation that I am pleased to be a part of.

Indeed Tyresafe are the brains behind this Tyre Safety Video

Many organisations are behind this Tyre Safety Video including the Police and Local councils. I have even seen the Motorway road signs telling drivers to have safe tyres, a great step forward in my opinion.

Hydrogen Cell car-to be Ready in Two Years and Will Compete with Battery Electric Cars.

Hydrogen Cell car to be Ready in Two Years

This is something that I have been writing about for a while now; the Toyota prototype has been unveiled to journalists from around the world. Toyota is expected to put this new technology vehicle a Hydrogen Cell car on sale in two years’ time.

Hydrogen Cell car

Hydrogen filling stations will be a common site on our forecourts in the near future along with other types of fuel ready for the Hydrogen Cell car

The new vehicle will be expected to be based on the Lexus HS a former Hybrid model week after Toyota confirmed aHydrogen Cell car project; this new Lexus  HS was seen being tested  in the heat of Death Valley, USA. One of the hottest places on earth. The car was also seen filling up from a re-fueling type truck which was heavily marked “HYDROGEN” , this now looks as if Toyota are well on their way in the development of this huge change in vehicle technology and totally opposite to the other car manufacturers, who are heading down the road of new car battery technology.

This new Hydrogen Cell car has already been driven by a few privileged motor journalists and the new Hydrogen Cell car has been given the thumbs up for the way that the vehicle handles, mainly due to the huge torque of the cars electric motors. Other  manufacturers are complaining that the use of this gas is not as green as the battery powered cars, mainly because the gas used in these cars is produced from natural gas, but you could argue that the electricity used to charge the battery cars is not green really because the electricity that recharges the hybrids batteries comes from dirty power stations using fossil fuels to make the electricity.

Surprisingly Toyota was not the first to use Hydrogen Cell car technology. The first car maker was their rivals Honda. In fact Honda developed a car based on the Honda FX as far back as 2008, 5 years ago. It is believed that Honda did not pursue with the project because there were no Hydrogen Cell car filling stations around at the time, and only 50 cars were built.

To service the gas driven cars there is already a network of  filling stations being built in Europe including the UK, where it is thought that deals have been struck with the large supermarket chains, to supply a pump on their fuel service forecourts. This and the addition of some new filling stations in London and hundred to be built in Germany will be music to the ears of Toyota, who I suspect will already know about these developments.

All to be revealed at the Tokyo car show.

To conclude Toyota are planning to produce 10000 of these cars by the year 2017 and all will be revealed at the Tokyo car show. The Tokyo Motor Show will start on November 23rd when all will be revealed.

Germans are dreaming of hydrogen fuel-cell cars.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Toyota cars go ahead with Hydrogen fuel power

As a result of more advanced research. So, the hydrogen fuel cell technology has moved further on. Hence,

at this moment in time companies are setting up Hydrogen fuel-cell cars filling stations all over Europe. One company that has been heavily involved is Air Liquide . Consequently, who are in the process of developing filling stations. Indeed have built 60 new Hydrogen fuel-cell cars filling stations across the World.

Air Liquide have said that Hydrogen fuel-cell cars can be filled in a few minutes and the equipment that is used to fill the car is much the same as a diesel or petrol car and is just as safe.

Here in the UK we are making forward moves to build a network of Hydrogen fuel-cell cars fuel filling stations and negotiations are taking place to use the network of supermarket filling stations to accommodate Hydrogen Fuel Cells pumps alongside the standard pumps used for petrol and diesel.

This move by Toyota will bring into play a battle of the green choices; one will be Hydrogen fuel-cell cars and the other lithium-ion technologies, very interesting to see who will come out on top.
