eric roberts‘s insight:

Women and Cars (heels and wheels)

This is a great article by” Sue Mead of the Housten Chonicle” and highlights exactly what i have been saying for the past ten years. That is that women are taking over the men when it comes to cars and car ownership.

According to this Heels and Wheels article the women are taking over through the control of the purse and the household budget.

Here in Halifax in the UK we have noticed the trend expanding over the past ten years, as i stated earlier. More and more young women are now driving and pass their driving test at an earlier age and buying a car straight away. In my opinion they can handle their money better than than young men,and always seam to manage to buy a small car as there priority, very impressive indeed.

We have also noticed the huge swing in the number of women that are bringing their cars into our garage. It appears that the ladies can legislate their time better and are no longer fearful about taking a car to the “DREADED” garage, when it comes to repairing and servicing their cars.

I estimate now that 60% of our customers are lady customers and they also know a good deal when they see one, so hats off to the women that are taking over the responsibility of the family car and their own cars too.

The one I have recently picked up on has been published by an organisation known as “Mumsnet” and posted on www.attachmentmummy.com . This is a female friendly organisation that informs their lady members about facts about cars and tyres. Michelin have also been involved in informing the ladies about which tyres are going to best for their cars. Heels and Wheels females are now expecting much more from their garages, in terms of tidiness and a vice warm reception area to sit and wait in, while their car is being repaired. We at Pellon  here in Halifax UK pride ourselves on been one of the prime female friendly businesses in our area, and we know by the amount of Heels and Wheels women customers that we have that our policy is working.

Broken Spring Problem

Broken Spring Problem-Roadwork causing damage to many cars -Car Damage Big Problem in Halifax-

Broken Spring Problem

Broken Spring Problem

Broken Spring Problem caused by pot holes ?

Roadwork causing Broken Spring Problem to many cars including many broken springs

WAFF

Mechanics said you should have your car alignment checked every year, but if you drive through a roadwork zone often or hit a big pothole, you should have it checked as soon as possible.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Broken Springs a problem

As to damaging your car’s tyres. So potholes are notorious. Including, ruining the alignment of your wheels. Of course, as well as the suspension and undercarriage of the vehicle. Therefore, when the car’s alignment is affected. Perhaps most serious but often the most overlooked problem. Hence,is that your steering wheel wont be straight.

Importantly, this can cause your car to veer off to the side. naturally when you are driving. Thus, left untreated this can become a potentially damaging problem.

Potholes are bad news for motorists everywhere. Increasing the chances of hitting a pothole and having your tyres damaged. Hence is significantly high.

After the terrible winter we have just had. Then it is important that drivers are on the constant lookout. Especially for potentially dangerous potholes when out driving. As a result, some of the potholes. Are created by the disastrous winter conditions.

Literally tearing people’s car tyres to pieces when driving over them. Especially on those dark winter nights.

Broken Spring Problem caused by huge pothole

Potholes are impossible to see. It is estimated that in Britain the price of repairing all the potholes on the roads is in the region of ₤ 10 million and will take around ten years to repair every single one.

If you come across a particularly big pothole. That you believe is going to cause your car and tyres some serious damage. Then the best course of action is to avoid them as best you can. If this is not an option drive over the potholes at a very slow speed, this should minimise the impact of hitting one.

There are some things though that people need to be made aware of when it comes to potholes. Including, the damage that they inflict upon a car’s tyres.  Are you aware that you are not liable for the pothole damage to your car? Drivers can claim for damages caused by a pothole. Just send them the proof from a photo or an image from your cellphone.

If you are planning on travelling around Great Britain. So and would like to check what the roads . Especially, in the areas you are going to be driving. Then there are many websites that have been set up to inform you. Many even have maps. Hence,to let you know where potholes are. Simply search for this kind of information on Google.

Because, you are bound to find a number of these websites.

Broken Spring Problem could be anywhere in the world

The problem of roadworks appears to be World wide. This article by WAFF is about the roads in the USA, but we have just the same problem here in

the UK. These roads with there ditches and potholes are not doing the cars suspension any good at all.

We seam to have half the roads in Yorkshire dug up at the moment ( probably getting ready for the Tour De France cycle race). The main problem for my garage at the moment is Broken Spring Problem and wheel alignment in Halifax being knocked out of position. These roads also have other premature steering problems such as worn out ball-joints.

Broken Spring Problem

This bent steering arm is due to a hole in the road.

The main problem to me. Is when the authorities repair a road they do not fill back the hole correctly. Of course, in a week or two, holes appear in the road. Thus, causing the surface to break up and later more pot holes spring up.

Most motorists do not know that they have a Broken Spring Problem

Of course, until their car has an MOT test, and it fails the test not knowing that if they knew where the hole in the road was, then they could have taken a photo and claimed for the damage caused from the local council.

I suppose I should not be complaining as long as we get some of the work in our garage ?

We must keep on trying to stamp out the people who are selling these death traps. here in the UK we even import the old tyres that Germany taken off their cars, what a stupid state of affairs it makes me feel sick, we also fit Unsafe Partworn Tyres from junk yards, not knowing anything about it. We just fit these Unsafe Partworn Tyres onto our cars, not knowing what dangers lurk inside them  and they could blow out at any time. Good luck to the RMA in America.

MOT Test Fee-How “LOW” can “MOT TEST FEES GET” ?

mot test fee

Popular MOT Test sign seen throughout the UK

We have all seen the cheap “In recent times the price of an MOT Test Fee has dropped to enable garages to attract the cash strapped motorists. All sorts of deals have been advertised, even “FREE”, testing that is allowed under the DVLA MOT Rules” signs outside garages.

As the owner of an MOT test centre in Halifax, I am amazed at the number of garages giving away . The official mot test fee should be £54.85 (no vat), as stated on the www.gov.uk web-site.

This MOT Test Fee is only a recommended charge to be used by garages, based on the time and equipment that it should take to carry out the mot test according to VOSA the Government test agency here in the UK.

The Government totally regulate our testing stations, including visits by inspectors and also make sure that we have the correct equipment and that all our paperwork is in order, we have regular updates for testing procedures such as any mechanical updates or different specifications that may have to changed during a test. Our testers are also checked by the ministry guys, to make sure that they are carrying out the correct testing procedures. We have to provide a suitable reception and viewing room for the customers, and also use VOSA’s own computer system to register the test results and store all the other information about my garage and the cars that are entered into the system.

In other words in my opinion we are controlled by the Government, to ensure that the testing procedure is carried out correctly and within the law. If we stray form the correct procedures we are subject to all sorts of penalties, which would ultimately result in the closure of your MOT station. I am not moaning about all this, to the contrary. I think that the system is a very good system and is the envy of many countries, it is not perfect but then again nothing is in the World of garages.

The average hourly rate that we charge for mechanical work in the independent garage sector is said to be around the £40 per hour mark and in my opinion is a very fair price to charge. The Government maintain that because we here in the UK use the private sector to test cars that the MOT Test Fee is only a recommended fee and garages should charge what they want, the problem is that when they visit, they ask you what you charge in your garage and don’t seam to like it if you charge too small  MOT Test Fee,(that’s the impression that I get). But surly they are the ones that think the pricing should be controlled by the private sector.

mot test prices have dropped “big style”

In recent times the price of an MOT Test Fee has dropped to enable garages to attract the cash strapped motorists. All sorts of deals have been advertised, even “FREE”, testing that is allowed under the DVLA MOT Rules, has been seen up and down the country. This obviously a move to attract the motorist into you garage in hope that you may get some mechanical work from a test failure, nothing wrong with that,”you may say”. The problem is that we have all huge investments in these mot test stations and the price we are getting is far lower than the investment in staff and machinery. I understand that we all have to the good with the bad, but I now feel that it is time that the Government stepped in. They could do two things in my opinion. They could have a minimum priced paid for a test, based on the average hourly rate, say perhaps £40, or make the £54.85 in to a mandatory MOT Test Fee to all motorists, and not just a recommendation.

It will be interesting for some feedback from other garage owners with mot test stations here in the UK.

Icon Tyres-ROAD SAFETY BREAKTHROUGH-Canada come up with COLOUR MARKING Tread Wear Indicators.

This is a move further on towards greater road safety from Icon Tyres

This is great news for me as I am one of those tyre guys who strongly advocate the addition of a coloured belt, that shows up when a tyre has reached its safety limit.

As a tyre dealer for almost 40 years offering Cheap Tyres Online, I am keen to interact with other professionals in the tyre industry and I am now a busy member of

icon tyres

Tyre showing a red colour as the tyre wears down to the tread indicators from Icon Tyres

tyre groups in Linked-in. I find that I can interact with other business owners that are in the same field of business and I am no longer just a tyre retailer stuck out in little old Halifax here in the UK.

One of my main aims is to try and help make the tyre industry a more safe environment for the every day car owner. Safer tyres are an essential part of modern motoring and a greener World, so whenever I hear about anything to do with tyres and tyre safety I try to report it on my Blog.

It alarms me when in recent times the tyre industry has sat back a little and standards in my opinion have slipped as regarding motorists fitting Part Worn tyres, when Cheap new car Tyres are more cost effective, that do not come under any tyre laws and have not been tested or checked out, just sold to the hard up motorists, who do not know any better. However I do see a light at the end of the tunnel, in the form of an organisation known as TYRESAFE.org. The public can log in to see what the latest tyre safety news is and also get other useful information from this excellent site.

Going back to my Blog about a coloured tyre belt to indicate when a tyre was down to the legal limit. I think that this would be one of the safest things in the tyre World to ever come out. Some respondents to my Blog said that it could not be done because the colours would run during the heat of the vulcanisation process and some other reasons, but I have received an email from Icon Tyres in Canada, that have invented such a system that is built into their tyres.

Icon Tyres have built in safety colours that work icon tyres

I received an email this morning from a Pat OBrien who is the owner of Icon Tyres,

Eric, my name is Pat O’Brien, and I own Icon Tyres (www.icontire.com). We currently offer tires with colored indication. I am the owner and developer of the technology. Our product initially developed tires that used laminated colored rubber to change the color of the tire, but found that cost to control rubber flow during the cure process was too high from a materials and equipment investment.
To address these obstacles, Icon Tyres uses a post cure method of putting “Visual Tire Performance Indicators” in our tires. With small modifications to tire molds, this concept can be used in any manufacturing process without impacting tire performance. Our indicators use a three color method to identify performance loss as the tire wears and empowers the consumer to make sound decisions regarding tire maintenance and replacement.”,
If you have any questions please contact me.

By Pat O’Brien

I was completely amazed when I went onto the web-site and saw the Icon Tyres product. This idea should be taken up by all the major tyre companies and in my opinion would be a massive breakthrough towards a better future, I know that other people will be interested in this and I wish Pat all the luck in the World in his future plans. Unfortunately there does not seam to be any further progress to market this great technology, I wonder why the tyre companies are shying away?

Toyo Proxes CF2

Presentation of the Toyo Proxes CF2, a high performance summer tyre: Strengths, dimensions, prices, similar tyres.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Toyo tyres keep up with the times

Toyo have developed the new Toyo Proxes CF2. Enabling them to use the latest modern materials available to them. Thus,in the drive for a greener and lighter tyre. Hence for the modern car and SUV. Therefore the  tyre structures and the tread pattern design. As a result, will help Toyo to  guarantee a high level of Safety.Including, durability, customer savings, and comfort. Of course, when driving the car.

Toyo Proxes CF2 benefits from an improved tyre construction which incorporates a new full-silica tread compound. The new tyre  is expected to have a longer life, an excellent wet road performance and much lower fuel consumption than its predecessors.

I have always been a big fan of Toyo tyres products and that includes this Toyo Proxes CF2 and in my opinion is the right choice for drivers who are looking  for a high performing and a safe tyre for there medium and also high powered cars. To bring the Toyo situation up to date we no longer sell many cheap Toyo tyres in Halifax, because of a change in their marketing pland. Almost all their tyre sales now have to go through a wholesaler, although i must admit that the stock is now more available to us, but we make less profits.

eric roberts‘s insight:

We at Pellonautocentre call these courtesy cars

This concept was started by the large franchise garages a few years ago now. In those days small garages relied upon motorists who lived very close by, and would drop off the car and probably catch the bus to work,or walk to school with the kids dropping off the car on there way to school, even teachers lived local and did not require a Customer Courtesy Cars.

Customer Courtesy Cars

good service hnading over the Customer Courtesy Cars keys

As the years went by and competition became more intense, people started to buy houses in different area a few miles from work and families became more wealthier, with the wife having a second car. This meant that these families could not do without a car and so the concept of the Customer Courtesy Cars ha evolved.

Then came the advent of the Customer Courtesy Cars or loan car. it was started off by the bigger companies, but switched on independent garages soon started to use them to retain their customer base. Now they are pretty standard items, in fact we here in Halifax have got no fewer than six cars for our clients use. This includes our latest Customer Courtesy Cars, the Apollo Tyres Fiat 500 and the Vauxhall Corsa.

July launch-New All-Season tyre

As a result of  feedback from its members. Then Point-S. Hence, a group of UK independent tyre dealers.Have decided to bring out a new all-weather tyre.

The new tyre will be known as the “4 Seasons”. In my opinion I think it is a bit too late. But better late than ever?

To give an insight into the decision. Winter tyres are specially made from the material that prevents hardening of the tyres in cold weather bellow 7 degrees.

Usually, in winter time when we experience heavy snow or low temperature. These tyres require a different compared to the normal summer tyres. Therefore, it becomes imperative to use special winter tyres for this purpose. Like most other things that are meant to be used in different seasons. Then, tyres must also be selected according to the season. Then came All-Season tyres?

July launch-New All-Season tyre

Very cold and countries with continuous snowfall require dedicated winter tyres. As a result, then the countries that have a mixed winter weather. Similar to the weather here in the UK require All-season tyres. Of course this is a generalization. Areas that are hilly and mountainous require cars to be fitted with genuine winter tyres. It becomes imperative to use special winter tyres for this purpose.

Winter tyres are specially made from the material. Preventing hardening of the rubber compound of the tyres. Hence, in case of heavy snow or low temperature. These tyres are also quite heavy treaded with many sipes. Compared to the normal tyres.
Usually in low temperature areas, the roads also accumulates water. Including snow and mud which only a tyre with deep tread grooves can dispel. Tyres with deep grooves and sipes can make more contact with the ground.

Hence pushing the vehicle forward safely. Subsequently, the main reason to use winter tyres would be your safety. As mentioned earlier. Deep grooves and sipes helps the tyres to maintain its grip. Naturally, on a slippery road. Summer tyres would be hopeless in such dangerous winter weather conditions.

All-season tyres are a compromise and a mixture summer and winter tyres. Ideal for drivers in warmer areas for dispelling water from rain drenched roads. Including areas where the terrain is flatter without hills to climb covered in snow. In the UK. Lincolnshire is such an are. Therefore All-season tyres would be ideal?

eric roberts‘s insight:

Tyres Online Internet companies tyre prices are leveling out as local tyre shops catch up with prices (Tyres Online Halifax)

Prices in the biggest internet tyre companies are now leveling out. One of the reasons for this in my opinion is the fact that local tyre companies are now competing online with the big boys.

We at Tyres Online Halifax UK can now offer  online products at the same or even cheaper tyre prices as the well known internet sellers. The customer also has the added knowledge that not only is he getting a very competitive price, but his local tyre depot can give him the re-assurance that if a problem arises (and they often do), then the problem will be resolved at a local level, without having to battle it out with e-mails, because half these companies are not on the phone and e-mails are the only way to contact them. In the short time that it has been since writing this post, then things have changed. in fact things concerning buying your Tyres Online Halifax are speeding up, so to say?. I am referring back to the local tyre company theme and “what comes round Goes round”. it is not rocket science that the only winner in this online tyre war is the consumer. The internet has cut the cake up into many small pieces and lowered the margins of most companies that sell them for a living, using the traditional methods.

A few years ago a similar thing happened, but that time it was the tyre wholesalers that cut the price up and selling cheap car tyres to any Tom,Dick and Harry and lowering our profits once again. Well this time it is the giant internet companies who have now being joined by the likes of supermarket chain ASDA under the name of ASDA Tyres. Luckily for the smaller independent tyre retailer the cost of running your own priced up website has come down considerably and we can now all compete with the big companies that trade online. This is where we all are today and God only knows what the future will bring, but at least we can now compete and service our customers at a local level once again, only time will tell.

So when you are thinking of buying Tyres Online Halifax look for a “LOCAL” tyre company who will sell the same product as the big boys at the same price or less. Also you can look up www.point-s.co.uk for a local company in your area.

As an update Blackcircles have been bought out by Michelin tyres and tyre wholesalers are buying up retail tyre depots, to try keep their market share.

European replacement Tyre sales down-Could part Worns be to Blame? In Q2 – Tire Business –

European replacement Tyre sales down

European replacement Tyre sales down

European replacement Tyre sales down

Although this could just be a statistical blip. Then I do fear that the “new tyre”replacement market. Indeed could be feeling the effect of certain market conditions. Here in the UK, I am hearing that many retailers are experiencing sales on the downside.

Therefore, what can we blame it on? Well the number one thing that springs to mind is sale of new cars in the same period. Of course drivers buying new cars do not buy new tyres. In my opinion though the main contender has to be the rapid growth of the part worn tyre industry.

As a result, I am shocked at the number of drivers  you happen to have bought some part worn tyres . Thus, to them it  seems like purchasing them is a good idea and they are saving money. Drivers are not aware of the dangers. Indeed, You can’t see inside these tyres to discover whether there is any damage to the internal structure. So even if by some chance there isn’t any visible damage. Then part worn tyres often work out more expensive per millimeter of usable tread. Of course, than buying an equivalent new tyre.

There is no doubt, that in the current economic climate we all want to save money. But some penny pinching drivers may be putting themselves. Including, other road users at risk. Hence, by choosing to fit part worn tyres to their cars. Drivers just do not think, in many cases part worn tyres have been driven on another vehicle. Supposedly still having enough wear left to be fitted to their car. The problem is that is not always true.

European replacement Tyre sales down

Part worn tyres are driving down the sale of new tyres. Accordingly, the vast amount of part worn tyres. Currently being sold here in the United Kingdom are actually illegal. Despite there being clear regulations. So, regarding the sale of part worn tyres. laws are just  being flaunted. Buying them is quite simply not worth the risk. But unfortunately people just want to save money.

Especially young drivers? This age group are more interested in buying expensive cloths and cosmetics. Thus that a set of new tyres. many times I have asked young drivers about buying tyres. Most have just wanted a tyre for £20. Not even considering the safety aspects. For this reason, this is the age group that the industry must be educating about tyre safety?

I am shocked at the number of drivers you happen to have bought some part worn tyres Click To Tweet

Another worrying aspect of this is the number of taxis that I see having part worn tyres fitted. Of course we all just jump in a taxi. Thinking that the owners are responsible people. But if you fit part worn tyres to to your taxi then you do not care about your passengers safety.

Lastly, although this has turned out to be a bit of a rant. Then it does tie up with the downturn of new car tyre sales?
