Bald Tyres-and Rain Soaked Roads = AQUAPLANING

Post Updated 28th Dec 2013

Bald Tyres;Change your tyres at 3 mil to avoid aquaplaning

This has been one of the wettest days of the year here in the UK. I say this because when I was driving along the M62 motorway I noticed that many parts of the motorway were flooded

Bald Tyres

Driving your vehicle on flooded roads at speed could result in your Bald Tyres loosing grip and aquaplaning.

and had large areas of standing water, on all the carriageways. This meant one thing to me “AQUAPLANING”. We know as the tyre industry that many motorists are putting off buying new replacements. All our sales figures are down, so the mixture of bald tyres on these very wet roads is a disaster waiting to happen. As I am writing this blog some motorists will be experiencing aquaplaning when driving along the motorway at speed with no tread left on their tyres, as I say this is a disaster waiting to happen and it will happen, “mark my word”

What is aquaplaning on Bald Tyres ?.

Bald Tyres

A glass road is used to film the tyres on test by the tyre manufacturing companies to test for aquaplaning. this picture shows the tyre from underneath as it drives over the flooded glass road.

This is a word that became synonymous with a Goodyear advert in the 1970s, but has now become a very important word because of our changing climate and faster roads. The word means that your wheel loses contact with road surface due to a thin layer of water between the tyre and the road surface, and the driver loses control of his car very often causing an accident.. A good tyre with more than 3 mm of remaining tread will push the water away as the car drives through the water at speed, giving good grip and safe conditions. All the leading  manufacturers design their tyres with aquaplaning (Driving in Wet Weather) as one of the main aspects of design.

Michelin  have even developed a system called “the anti-surf system” to enable their products to give maximum grip when going through areas of static water on the roads, this system is built into the Michelin Pilot sports 3. This tyre has also got added shoulder design to help push the water away and help delay the onset of aquaplaning.

When on a delivery in Leeds recently I came upon one of the examples of a Triumph Spitfire Car that I seen for a long time. The 015 12 Volt Battery that I was 038 Apollo-Power Car Batterydelivering was a 038 Apollo-Power Car Battery ,and I knew that this battery only fitted older cars (that’s because i am old myself) . Lucky for me the guy was at home when I made the delivery and so I asked him which car the battery fitted. To my surprise he was only too pleased to talk about his “pride and joy”, not the BMW parked in his drive, but a beautiful red Triumph Spitfire. The customer  even sent me a couple of pictures for my blog as I had forgotten my camera, What a great find?? The 038 Apollo-Power Car Battery are now one of our popular batteries. They are sealed and maintenance free. The  038 Apollo-Power Car Battery also comes with a three year full warranty and is available for collection from Batteriesontheweb in Halifax Yorkshire UK, during normal working hours.

The Triumph Spitfire was always a big favorite of mine and i will never forget the first one that i owned. It was a rusty white colour and was my pride and joy. I had just bought a new set of 155×13 remould tyres and set off for the traditional bank holiday Monday outing to Scarborough with a few other friends. I must admit that in the late sixties we did used to drink and

drive, although it was illegal we very often went out for a drink and then drove home.

My Triumph Spitfires trip out to the coast?

It was in the days when the Police just asked you to walk a straight line if they suspected that you had been drinking. Back to Scarborough; we were invited to a party in a small village on the outskirts and after a few drinks my friend,Paul asked if we fancied going to the “Toby Jug” on the sea front, this was where all the “In crowd” used to hang out. My friend had a big old Austin A55 saloon and i set of towards Scarborough with Paul not far behind. We were heading for the A64, the main Leeds to Scarborough road. We took a sharp bend just before the road junction with the A64, i had to slam on the brakes very hard to stop at the junction, but my friend Paul’s brakes were not so good and he smashed straight into the back of me.

To my shock and horror a Police car was just passing on the busy A64 and witnessed what had happened. I froze as he walked towards me and my smashed up Triumph Spitfire which had Paul’s A55 smashed into the back of me. The Policeman was on bank holiday traffic duty on the busy A64 and asked us if we were” injured or not”. We told him that we were alright and he apologized that he could not help us as he had traffic to look after,”what a relief” i could not believe our luck i was certain that we would be spending the night in a jail cell. My pride and joy was written off and towed the following day back to Dewsbury in West Yorkshire where i lived with my parents, a happy and sad day for me and my car.

GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days-How things were In the nineties.

 Post Updated 28th Dec 2013

GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days; no longer number one in 1990.

In 1990 the French company Michelin tyres bought out another tyre company called BF Goodrich tyres of America. This was a good capture for Michelin because Goodrich had previously merged with Uniroyal tyres.

In the GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days, Firestone tyres and General tyres had suffered sales volumes at the hand of Goodyear tyres dominance in the radial tyre market and Firestone were taken over by Bridgestone tyres of

GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days

The famous Goodyear Eagle emblem

Japan and General  were bought out by Continental  of Germany. These bigger companies were now at the same size as Goodyear tyres and the buy out moves started to have an impact on Goodyears sales. GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days had their fingers in other non-tyre ventures, one of which was The “All American Pipeline”. This company was producing operational losses and was costing Goodyear over $3 billion of debt, but Goodyear tyres were slow to react and make changes , resulting in the appointment of a Mr C Gault as chairman of the company.

Goodyear tyres were now suffering and between 1989 and 1991 they shed over 12000 jobs, 10% of its workforce. The redundancies came mainly from the white collar section of the workforce, The giant tyre company also set about restructuring its factories with some closures and others being modified, this reconstruction of the company was estimated to save Goodyear tyres over $250 million a year in savings.

Goodyear tyres believed adamantly in the research and development program and kept up the spending on new tyre development, something that GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days were very passionate about. The company started to bring out new products on the back of this development and new tyres began to emerge, the first ones been the The Goodyear Eagle GT and the Eagle GA. I remember these tyre well, they were modeled for the more luxury cars in the early nineties. These new products helped Goodyear tyres to regain the market share that they lost to the Michelin group and in 1992 they restructured their debts to a more manageable amount of around $1.5 billion.

Another great new tyre to come out of Goodyear tyres in the early nineties

was the “Aqua tread”, which was an all season tyre sold around the World and will be remembered by older drivers. The new tyre was launched simultaneously across the globe. I remember attending the Goodyear tyres launch on their test track in Luxembourg and the tyre became a huge success.GOODYEAR TYRES Early Days

Car Servicing Halifax-There are different types of car maintenance?

Post Updated 28th Dec 2013

Cars are just pieces of machinery and need Car Servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax

Car Servicing Halifax

Modern cars, are just like any other piece of machinery, they require maintenance on a regular basis. If your car is neglected it will become worn and tired and will eventually stop working . In my opinion this is what will happen. This is why regular servicing is very important and if carried out regularly will ensure that your car performs at the optimum level for much longer. Not all car owners can afford to take their car to the garage for Car Servicing Halifax and  repairing, but because of the skill and knowledge of the service mechanics, your local auto-centre Car Servicing Halifax is best place to have  servicing carried out.

Levels of Car Services

This is just a breakdown of the types of servicing  that you may encounter at your local auto-centre. Most safety conscious drivers will book their vehicle in for a service at least once a year. This is generally the case with most drivers that care for their cars and also care about road safety.

As a standard rule, most auto-centres that service your car have four types of services to choose from. These are (in order of the number of checks carried out):

1- engine service (oil and filter change) known as a Bronze service.

2- medium service Silver service.

3- full service Gold service.

4- full service + MOT test Platinum service.

Depending on the type of your vehicle and how much you use it, it is worth checking what is involved in each kind of these services. Especially if you like most of us are concerned about the money situation. This is because each service has a scale of things that are carried out and it may be that you could only afford to have an engine service and not the large Gold service. In my opinion this would be better than not having your car serviced at all, and letting your car degenerate.

The most basic maintenance plan is the oil and filter change (engine service). This service changes your oil and oil filter, also checking basic safety things such as your tyres, lights and a visual check of the brakes.

car servicing Halifax

car servicing Halifax

If you use your car a lot throughout the year, you may consider booking your vehicle in for an medium car servicing Halifax, say every six months you can do this between your annual full service (gold service)

The next service is the silver service which will include somewhere in the region of 25-35 safety checks on your car, components such as brake fluid, handbrake travel, steering and suspension will be examined and reported on, if any further problems arrive.

The most comprehensive service an auto-centre offers is usually the Full Service (gold service). This is recommended by garages as an annual check-up, the gold car servicing Halifax will go through almost everything in a car using our special check list.

With well over 50 checks, a Gold Service will ensure that your car performs to optimum levels and should last the car right after the year following your service. The gold service is often carried out with an MOT to make a platinum service.

Not only do these car servicing Halifax options act as fantastic preventative measures that will help to keep your car safe, but when you have booked your car in for a service the mechanics that carry out the work might spot things which could affect your MOT.

If small issues are found, these can be fixed before they turn into big problems that cost you far more money. Servicing a Car

Some people encounter problems when working long hours and you just cannot get to phone ?? well if you live in the Halifax area or the Elland and Brighouse area, not forgetting Hebden Bridge or Sowerby Bridge, then you can now book online for your MOT and car servicing. This is an easy way to book your MOT and service.

Air-Conditioning Time-Service your cars AIR-CON the weathers starting to warm up ?

Air-Conditioning Time; Air-Con was invented in 1939 in the USA

The weather here in the UK has now started to get warmer, and it is generally the Air-Conditioning Time of the year that motorists turn their air conditioning on and find that it isn’t

Air-Conditioning Time

Air-Conditioning Time; Portable Air Conditioning machine that we use on cars here in Halifax Yorkshire

working as good as they would like. Sometimes the won’t be getting cold, and sometimes there will be a musty sort of smell coming from the inside of the car. It is just not the same driving on a hot day with the windows wound down. You will probably find that your air-con needs to be re-gassed, or a more thorough service and inspection may be required.

Just out of interest, the first air con  system for the car

was invented back in 1939 by Packard, in America and was the first to be fitted in the factory in 1940. The first refrigerant used in air-con was thought to be  highly damaging to the atmosphere, and a safer gas was later used in the 1960s.

Most of our customers know that it is  Air-Conditioning Time choose again and choose to have their air conditioning serviced yearly. This will clean out all the dirt and germs that have built up in the course of time, it will also recharge the gas as necessary. The other option would be to leave your air-con until there is a drop in the air con temperature and performance. There is a risk of leaving your air-con until there is a problem, the problem may arise with the result in a bigger repair and a bigger bill. Either way, in between summers, you do still need to think about your air conditioning system, we recommend that you leave the air-con on all through the autumn and winter, this stops the gas pressure from falling.

Many motorists are under the impression that Air-Conditioning Time is just for hot weather. In fact, you will need to use it all year round, otherwise, it will be highly unlikely to be working properly on the hot days we do have, (as we are experiencing at the moment) In the colder months of winter, you can use your air- con system to warm the car, and it will also remove moisture from the air so that windows do not get misted up, this something that drivers do not know.

If your car is fitted with climate control it is often tempting on really hot days to turn the cold button as far down as it will go, but unless you are on a long journey, the chances are the system won’t be able to achieve the low temperature that you are looking for. Then when you exit the car, you feel like you’re stepping into a hot, steaming forest. Not very comfortable at all. You are much better off aiming for an in-car temperature of just a couple of degrees lower than the outside temperature. You will feel more comfortable in the car, and it won’t be such a shock when you get out of the car, (we have all been there, when we hire a car in say Spain and the inside of the car are nice and cool, then when we get out it’s like stepping into an oven), if you don’t have the inside temperature so cold then your body won’t get such a shock when you hit the heat.

Any bad smells coming from your air-con system should be checked

out by a good auto-centre as soon as possible, particularly if you or any of your family has any breathing problems such as asthma. It indicates that there are bacteria in the car’s air-con system (often caused by leaves going mouldy and blocking up the exterior vents in Autumn, so do remove any that you see there!) you can also smell the bad smell coming in from other cars, this is very common and nothing to worry about.

In the Halifax area of West Yorkshire, you can have your air-con serviced by experts.

New Radial Tyres-Gave a hard Ride when fitted with wrong suspension?

America was slow to take to New Radial Tyres

The American tyre market was much slower to use the option of radials on their new cars that they were producing. The rest of the world including Europe and the UK were starting to

New Radial Tyres

New Radial Tyres; The Michelin X was the first steel belted radial tyre in the World and gave double the mileage, although the grip in wet weather was nothing to write home about.

use New Radial Tyres in much larger numbers, especially in France and Germany with Peugeot and Citroen leading the way, fitting Michelin tyres on most of their early Diane models.

However, things were very different across the pond in the USA. They tended to go for the Bias-belted tyres, to compliment the type of suspensions that were used on American cars. One of the problems they had with the New Radial Tyres was that the precise handling of the radial tyre showed up hidden weaknesses in the American cars.

Ford became the front runners in correcting the problems, introducing “radial tuned” suspension on the new Thunderbird and Lincoln models. This modification enabled Ford to offer radials  as an optional extra, this started in 1967 a couple of years after I started my career in tyres here in the UK. The offers of radials were not taken up very well by the public and one of the reasons was supply problems. Other major car makers followed fords footsteps but were supplying sub-standard radials and suffered quality problems because radials were in their infancy in the states.

Many of the manufacturers had to replace these sub-standard tyres with imported Michelin tyres, Michelin had tyres that were tried and tested without any quality problems. One of the big players in tyre supplies in America was the department store, Sears. Sears controlled about 25% of the American tyre replacement market in those days and that settled down to about 10% because their competitors had started to sell New Radial Tyres. This ate into Sears tyre numbers. Sears had done a deal with the tyre makers Armstrong Rubber company which supplied Sears with their Bias belted products, but things certainly picked up when they started to introduce radial tyres, making them one of the top tyre retailers in the States.

Ford used the first radial tyres in America

In 1968 top Ford officials had a meeting with the Michelin  company to fit their radials to the new Lincoln Continental as original equipment and Michelin would be the exclusive supplier of tyres for this new model. The American public knew that radials  lasted far longer than the Bias belted that the were used to driving on, sometimes up to four times longer. It is widely reported that Ford paid $19.50 for the first Michelins, only $5 more per tyre than for bias belted, this was indeed a great deal for Ford and the first American cars rolled off the production lines on cheap Michelin Tyres UK.

Car Air-Conditioning Halifax UK; the air-conditioning unit of a car is often easily overlooked

Car Air-Conditioning Halifax UK-That is until the hot weather hits us,or it malfunctions completely. And this happens, it is often too late for simple solutions. Unlike your Home Air-Conditioning Unit , your cars air

Car Air-Conditioning Halifax UK

conditioning unit is much more complex.

Your cars air- conditioning unit

is a system that works much like your own bodies blood system. The air cons compressor is the heart that pumps a refrigerant called EPA throughout the Car Air Conditioning Service unit .EPA, a combination of gas and liquid, causes the air to cool when it is compressed. When the EPA coolant levels are low your air con will not work, this where an air con check over is required. In the check over the freon levels will be checked. Like your ordinary household air conditioning unit, your auto air-conditioning system will not work as it should when Freon Gas levels are low. Make sure you have a mechanic check Freon levels regularly before the unit experiences a major breakdown.

To make it possible for the EPA coolant to carry the heated air away and leave the car with cold air depends on the pressure that is applied to it. Air coming into the condenser helps in this process. This is the reason why, sometimes, for older models of air conditioners, the temperature is cooler when the car is travelling at full speed than when it stands idle. This allows the compressor to pump EPA coolant harder and faster. Therefore, this helps the air- conditioner system to operate much more efficiently.

As I have said earlier the first time we start having hot weather is when we turn on the AC button and nothing happens. We have all done it ?. The kids are shouting the wife’s boiling hot and shouting at the kids, all because the air-conditioning doesn’t work. More than likely the air-con system will be low on coolant fluid, and this can be corrected by checking with you local auto centre and having an air-con service, this costs around £50, but is well worth the money and leaves your car nice and cool on these few hot sticky summer days.

There are several things that can go wrong with your car’s air-conditioning

but the main problem is that you have had the system switched off for the winter/spring period and the fluid levels have gone lower, once again this will be corrected by a full Car Air-Conditioning Halifax UK service or Portable Air Conditioning Units

BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor-WHEEL ALIGNMENT can throw the “Steering Angle Sensor on your Merc ML / BMW X5

Post Updated 26th Dec 2013

BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor;Be aware on these models when you have the wheel alignment adjusted

BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor

This Mercedes ML Brabus is equipped with EPS system it is wise to get the correct equipment to be able to reset the BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor after a wheel alignment has been carried out. We only learned about this after the event.

While we are carrying out a wheel alignment on a Mercedes ML, we noticed that a warning light came on, on the dash . This warning light was for the “Steering Angle Sensor”. This is now common place on many models of Mercedes, BMW and Audi cars and SUVs. It basically informs the driver if the wheels are straight in-line or not, but BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor can be caused by a wheel alignment correction at a garage or Autocentre.

This is usually on cars that have an ESP system that controls the cars steering and braking, and the sensor is built into the steering wheel. We have found out many companies who build and manufacture Four-Wheel Alignment machines are now aware of the problem and are making small machines that are linked to the wheel alignment machines so that the code for the BMW X5 Steering Angle Sensor can be re-set. One such company is Pro-Align who now a new piece of equipment to enable the codes to be re-set .

Wheel alignment could set off a warning light.

We at Pellon tyres are going to upgrade our arsenal of electrical diagnosis equipment to enable us to correct the problem so that we can happily carry out  alignments without worrying about setting the warning off and having to pay a Mercedes garage for the light on the dash re-set. Mid-Range Kumho Tyres-Always try and Ask the Experts for Advice About TYRES

 Post Updated 26th Dec 2013/22nd April 2016

Mid-Range Kumho Tyres-Always good advice about Tyres for our customers

Mid-Range Kumho Tyres-Many consumers don’t know enough about tyres to make an educated choice when making a purchase. For most people, the choice comes down to price especially in these times of

recession. Other people want to stick to the same brand that they have always fitted to the car and are satisfied with the performance they have had out of their old ones. We generally find that the customers who come into the depot will take our advice on the products that we recommend. Over the tears, we have sold millions of the round black things covering many brands and as long as we have the trust in the products that we sell, then the customers are prepared to take our advice.

At the moment, we are very big advocates of Mid-Range Kumho Tyres and also General mid-range tyreswe have every faith that the Mid-Range Kumho Tyres Ecsta Le Sports KU39 will perform extremely well and this confidence is passed onto our customers. I have personally travelled to watch racing BMWs screech round the race track fitted with  KH17 and I have asked the car drivers for their opinion about their performance, and I got nothing but praise for these tyre Reviews. This gives me great confidence when selling this excellent product.

Regardless of Tesco Tyres choice, it is necessary that the motorists understand why tyres are so important. Your tyres are your car’s only contact with the road. Even the racing cars with their powerful engines , strongest brakes, or most advanced anti-skid systems such as the racing BMWs, are at the mercy of the tyre’s grip on the road. Every move a driver makes with the steering wheel or brake or accelerator pedal is transmitted to the road through the four contact patches of the tyres. This not very much although tyres are getting much wider on

Mid-Range Kumho Tyres

Mid-Range Kumho Tyres-Kumho KW23 winter tyre

to-days cars

Consumers must select a product that will work year ’round and in most conceivable driving situations. However, motorists often ask their cars’ tyres to do many things, and there are many times a vehicle’s tyres aren’t up to the task.
Selecting the right ones for your driving needs is as important as selecting the right vehicle. The ones that are badly worn won’t be able to displace enough water to prevent aquaplaning Performance Summers won’t be able to get much grip in snow. All-season tyres can’t manage the heat build up in high-speed driving. Passenger car tyres might not be able to carry the heavy load found in a contractor’s pickup.

But before consumers can select the right tyres, they have to understand a little tyre technology first.

Worn tyres won’t be able to displace enough water to prevent hydroplaning. High-performance tyres won’t be able to get much grip in snow, but  winters  will give you the grip in snow that you want, as I have stated find the right ones for the job and you will be safe in the knowledge that you Mid-Range Kumho Tyreshave been advised correctly by tyre experts here at Pellon tyres in Halifax.

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer-When a rapid tyre de-flation happens on your car

 Post Updated 26th Dec 2013

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer;and What do runflat tyres do ?

Many of my customers complain when they have to buy their first replacement runflat tyres. They simply do not understand how these tyres have evolved during the past 10 years of car design and its all linked with green house gasses and your cars emissions.

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer and also help to reduce the overall weight of your car. This is done by not having a spare wheel, jack or wheel brace, which reduces the overall weight of the car thus making your car

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer;How run flat tyres work

car more fuel efficient. Also the fact that you do not have a spare wheel gives you more space in the boot and as stated a lighter load. The runflat tyres are also made from less materials than the conventional tyres which also makes them more environmentally friendly.

As far as tyre performance is concerned the BMW Run Flat Tyres are just the same as the conventional tyres providing all the benefits of the modern performance tyres, the main difference is that when your car has a puncture while you are out driving, then the runflat tyre will not deflate giving your car normal handling and cornering therefore reducing the risk of an accident with other road users, in other words Runflat Tyres Are-Safer . This is especially important say if you were in the fast lane of the motorway when the puncture occurred. Your normal tyre would instantly deflate making your car very unstable and possibly causing a bad accident, in fact figures show that tyres cause a large percentage of motor related accidents, and the runflat tyres are a big improvement on the accident figures, enabling the driver to keep a straight line when a puncture occurs in one of the runflats. .

These new runflat tyres systems were originally created to keep drivers safe, because punctures and blow-outs can be dangerous, and as stated before account for a large majority of fatal accidents on the road. Apart from safety, a flat tyre can be a real inconvenience, adding time and cost and sometimes embarrassment to your journey. Changing a tyre is fairly straightforward, but it often occurs at the most inopportune moment – getting stuck on the side of a motorway or in the pouring rain with noisy kids in the back seat is really no fun at all! And trying to change a tyre on the hard shoulder can be dangerous in itself, or even impossible if you are disabled or elderly, in fact many drivers have to call out the rescue services to change the wheel for them,

But the drivers with runflat tyres and tpms systems do not have to put up with this

and once the tyre warning light comes on in the cab, they can safely tootle home or carry on with their journey,(all be it at 50 mph, which is the recommended speed once you have a flat on your runflat tyres).

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer;Any vehicle fitted with runflat tyres

should also include a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) this will show you whether you tyre pressure has been lost, this is because without this the loss of pressure in your

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer

Runflat Tyres Are-Safer;Tyres construction

tyres will not be noticed. Runflat tyres are meant to maintain there speed, handling and smoothness of driving when a puncture occurs, even when driving on a motorway. A TPMS is essential to alert the driver to a loss in tyre pressure, and will indeed becoming part of the MOT test in the near future. Your TPMS works from either a sensor in your wheel , which is usually a special valve or from the cars ABS braking system.

Almost all of the Worlds leading tyre companies Bridgestone Run Flat Tyres make runflat tyres including Continental and Goodyear, cheap tyres can be bought online, but I recommend that you stick to the make that you have on the car at the moment or as a good cheaper alternative we recommend General and Apollo tyres.
