– This includes Motorhome tyres- before your journey

Check Your CARAVAN TYRES; West Yorkshire can not stress the importance of your caravan tyres.

Tyre experts recommend that owners of any trailed vehicles should remove the complete wheel or wheels .Then take them to their favorite garage or auto centre. Check Your CARAVAN TYRESThen have them checked by a professional member of the team. It is important that the wheels  are given a thorough inspection, this will ensure the safest possible outcome. So Check Your CARAVAN TYRES . The most common thing found on caravan tyres is sidewall cracking. This usually only comes to light when the tyre is removed. We can flex the sidewall with the tyre removed from the wheel, and this will show the extent of the cracking. This problem is due to the affect of ultra-violet light acting on the carbon black. This is in the make up of the tyre when the caravan is parked, and is more common on Old Michelin tyres.      This information also applies to motor-homes.

The wheels will be checked for corrosion. Then the tyres will be removed from the wheels and checked for internal cuts and damage. This is most important as unseen damage can become a nightmare scenario. Especially, when going down a motorway at sixty mile per hour and losing complete control due to tyre failure.

Check Your CARAVAN TYRES

The tyre dealer will then Check Your CARAVAN TYRES, the outside of the for damage to the tread area and the sidewalls for cuts and cracks. Also important is to check the age of the tyre, this can be easily done by an expert fitter.Tyres do become out of date after six years and are affected by aging in the sidewalls.

Check Your CARAVAN TYRES

As stated above cracks start to form around the rim area due to the caravan wheels been stood in the Sun for long hours. Especially, during the Summer months. And eventually the carbon black, that is used in the manufacture of the caravan  tyres, starts to break down. Small but deep cracks start to form around the rim area. This will eventually join up to create a very dangerous hazard. Indeed this is one of the most common cause for tyre blowouts on caravans and trailers. Any caravan tyres with cracks and cuts should be scrapped and replaced with a new tyre .Finally if everything is OK the pressures and tyre valves should be checked to the correct loading for your vehicle and trailer.

Another important point is to have the vehicle loading checked on your caravan tyres,

to make sure that the wheel set up conforms to your caravan or trailers recommended weight carrying capacity. Some of the larger heavier vehicle require more heavy duty tyres to carry the extra loading, your tyre dealer will advise you on the correct fitments by advising you fit either re-enforced or larger ply rated ones.
Check Your CARAVAN TYRES pressures, which should always be checked and adjusted when the pressures are cold before every journey. If in doubt replace with new and correct  caravan tyres.

Now Summer is approaching is a good time to check your tyres especially in this mild weather, Beat the Bank holiday rush

Pirelli Tyres History-a “Brief History” of their tyre Manufacturing Excellence

Pirelli Tyres History – famous for the manufacture of both tyres and underground cable they were founded in Milan in Italy in 1872 by Giovanni Battista Pirelli.

Pirelli tyres have been making tyres for over 100 years and although Eric Roberts from Pellon Tyre and Autocentre has not been around for that long, he says”that in all his experience in the tyre trade these Italian  tyres have always given motorists good service and good mileage, and are one brand name that commands respect and loyalty amongst the Pirelli tyres users”. This is indeed praise from such an established tyre dealer( who also have Pirelli Girls Calendar) to this day stills sells these tyres at his Halifax based tyre depot.

Much of the Pirelli Tyres History

was born from the need of Lancia rally. They wanted a stronger lower riding radial tyre for their Lancia Stratos rally car. This lead the designers to create a much stronger tyre construction. Both wider and with a much lower side wall. This design became very successful and a great boost to lancia racing. Indeed Porsche also started to use tyre in its racing division.
This Pirelli tyre design lead to the creation of the  Cinturato. The tyre was developed in the 1950s and was originally made from a textile belted construction. Consequently, the tyre gave great comfort and road holding qualities but as for all textile construction tyres was a little low on mileage and could not compete with some of its rivals namely Michelin tyres who were streets ahead with their steel belted X range of tyres.

The earlier cinturatos were used as original equipment. This was on most Italian made production cars such as the Alfas. They were also fitted to sport and rally cars using using 165r400 cinturatos. These tyres are a great part of the Pirelli Tyres History. Eric Roberts remembers the first time he saw these tyres ,”they were very unusual at the time, but things were changing fast in the world of tyres, and we were not that surprised at what came along next”. These Pirelli  tyres are still the only tyres to be used in certain types of motor racing. The most common size been the 165×14. These cinturato tyres were commonly seen on early MGB GT’s and can be bought at specialist tyre dealers from the internet.

Goodyear Tyres Efficient Grip Tyre-another great Goodyear product

Goodyear Tyres Efficient Grip Tyre;Goodyear has launched its new tyre, the Goodyear Efficient Grip.

Eric Roberts from Pellon Tyre and Autocentre is very impressed with the new product. Which is the latest from Goodyear Tyres Efficient Grip Tyre long line of excellent products. Eric started out in his 35 year career working for Goodyears retail side. Consequently, has first hand experience in dealing with their extensive products range. Indeed Eric was selected to attend a six week managment training

coarse at their Birmingham Wolverhampton tyre plant.

Our coarse took in diverse subjects including all aspects of tyre designs. This included a regular visits to the tyre factory. Followed by classroom lectures about tyre design and related occurring problems when fitted to the actual vehicles.
Eric also had to solve problems in brain storming sessions. These were videoed and later pulled apart in the lecture room. This was to give the participants confidence for future assignments. That Goodyear were planning for certain individuals. Indeed Eric was later interviewed for a retail role that would have taken him to Australia. The giant tyre company were very disappointed when Eric had to turn the job down because of personnel reasons.

Goodyear started out making one of the first steel radial tyres the G8.
The next generation tyre from Goodyear was the G800+s this tyre had teething problems but these were overcome and the companies Car Tyres regained its reputation as a world leader in tyre manufacturing . This was followed by many other tyre types all with improvements in tyre tread design, indeed Goodyear were the first to bestow the advantages of tread patterns that combat aquaplaning.

Goodyear Tyres Efficient Grip Tyre.

Aquaplaning, is the tiny lair of water that forms between the tyre tread and the road surface. Therefore, causing a driver to lose control of his vehicle in very wet driving conditions. Goodyear NCT range were designed to combat aquaplaning with a massive extensive advertising campaign, Goodyear were the leaders in World tyre sales.

The latest arrival to Goodyears innovations is the new Goodyear Efficient Grip tyre.

Consequently, resulting with low emission greener cars in mind, cars like the new Renault electric vehicle , that require a tyre with much lower rolling resistance. Goodyear Efficient Grip Review have managed this by make this tyre a lot lighter. The objective, has been achieved by using lighter plastic materials in the construction. Thus reducing the weight by 10%, also they have added a new material into the compound creating less heat generation and therefore reducing a lower rolling resistance and better performance. Car Servicing-Halifax-UK-Some advice about keeping your car in good and safe condition

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK; Many motorists have major problems when it comes to  car servicing,

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK; Most cars need an annual” major servicing”, and in my belief depending on mileage should have one or even two what I call “engine servicing” every year.  This, as a rule, means the oil and filter changed  and the rest of the levels topped up. Cars over three years old could and perhaps should have the main service carried out at the same time as the MOT test.

Your garage should advise you to have test carried out prior to the servicing, this is always best practice and is recommended by the Ministry of Transport as the correct procedure. It also gives you control of your purse strings, indeed,  what you should do is instruct the garage to notify you of any failures that the test may throw up. You must also ask your garage to give you an estimate of the cost of repairs to your car to get your car through the test.
Many customers of servicing centres do this because if the cost of your repair schedule is high, you may not be able to afford to have the car serviced, indeed you can then cancel the service for a later time when you can afford to have the servicing carried out. The finest practice though is to have the test and the service carried out on the same day. This will ensure that you car will be in tip top condition for your summer holidays or indeed that harsh winter to come.

Look for a Unipart servicing centre

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK

Car Servicing-Halifax-UK

Most accomplished garages  carry out servicing  cars to a high standard. They will carry out menu servicing according to the manufacturers advice. Indeed many garages and auto centres use a servicing  menu. That is specialized for your car by typing your registration number into an  automotive computer. Using software that prints out the exact service menu for your car. This also tells the engineer the exact type of oils to use.  This is essential due the different types of oil now used in up to date car engines. Another benefit of using this technology. Is that the processor will recommend on the time or mileage it takes before your cam belt requires changing. This, in turn, should come in the form of recommendation written as an advisory on your “work to do  sheet”.

Car Servicing-Halifax

Another good piece of advice is that if you are new to an area. You do not know where to have your car serviced it look for a garage carrying the MotorCodes Code Of Practise sign .This will ensure that you will get reasonable prices for a service and repairs.Because the garage has been checked for good practice and procedures by the RAC of Great Britain. Therefore any quality control procedures by the auto centre should give you confidence enough that if any problems occur. Consequently they will be dealt with in a fair and correct conduct. In general, any garage you carries out MOT testing,  are generally up to a good quality and are also regulated  and  controlled by the Vehicle Standards Agency.

The usual way to find a good  Car Garage is by word of mouth by friends or relations. Other methods are yellow pages or Google on the internet.

Also try to go to a servicing centre,

that is regulated by a trade organisation, then if a dispute arises your dilemma can go into the negotiation and with a” bit of luck” resolved. Also, people do vote with their feet and an industrious servicing centre is usually a good servicing centre, happy motoring. Regular Wheel Alignment-needs adjustment at “Regular Intervals”to Save your Tyre Wear.

Regular Wheel Alignment

Regular Wheel Alignment; Potholes damage your wheel alignment and tyres

Regular Wheel Alignment

Broken springs damaged by potholes

Regular Wheel Alignment

Regular Wheel Alignment

Proper Wheel Alignment; In the Halifax area of West Yorkshire we have a high incidence of cars requiring Wheel Alignment. The primary cause for this is driving over potholes and speed bumps. Pothole damage can  alter the vehicle’s steering and suspension geometries or damage critical components such as tyres and steering parts. Which can reduce the vehicle’s safety or create extra running costs? Out of alignment can also damage the tyres prematurely, but by ensuring the wheels are correctly aligned, (this could be avoided), and drivers can minimise the effects of any pothole or speed bump damage and ensure they remain as safe as possible.

Regular Wheel Alignment

The recent severe weather will inevitably increase the number of potholes. These can cause the damage. Due to the fact, the holes may be covered with snow and ice. The problem could cause some serious safety issues for drivers. If a motorist knows that they have gone down a pothole they should get their alignment checked, most auto centres will give you a free alignment check, and you only pay if the alignment is out and it needs adjusting.

Another sign that your alignment is out is that your steering wheel may not be straight, this will need all the front alignment re-setting and could take an hour or two you could incur an extra cost, so it may be wise if you asked for an estimate of the cost. Another thing you should watch for when having your alignment checked is the problem of seized up steering parts. The garage or auto centre may have to use some form of heat to free off seized steering parts; This will take much longer, and an extra charge will usually be applied, wheel once again an excellent auto centre will warn you of this and give you the choice of to have it done or not.

Regular Wheel Alignment;Go to a Good Tyres Centre for WheelAlignment

Any good auto-centre will make you a full tyre service for free, he will check your tyre pressures, your tyre tread depth, in the UK the tread depth is 1.6 mm for 3/4 of the tread width from the centre of the tread to the edges, the will also check your tyres for bulges and cuts and then inflate your tyres to the correct pressures, this will be all part of the service which should be carried out with a smile if not go somewhere else.
To sum up have your Car Wheel Alignment  carried out at regular intervals, especially if you think that you have hit a pothole or gone over a speed bump too fast.

Always have the alignment checked if you are having new tyres fitted, even if the auto centre ask you to come back later, a few days will not scrub your tyres off, have your pressures and tyre wear checked regularly and if have any doubt of what tyre to buy always go for a mid-range make, this will mean that you get good quality and the tyres will be cheaper than a branded make. Once again a good garage or auto-centre will be glad to help and check your tyres for free.

Road Potholes-Could Mean Wheel Alignment many more mechanical Problems

Road Potholes; wheel alignment reduces your “tyre wear.”

In the Calderdale district of North England, we experience a high incidence of vehicle owners needing Wheel Alignment. The main causes for this is driving over

Road Potholes

Road Potholes; This car hit a pothole and broke the spring

Holes in the road. This is because the local council are reluctant to carry out Repairs. This includes safety humps. This can change the car’s steering and suspension geometries. Potholes can also  break key parts such as suspension and steering components. This effect can reduce the vehicle’s safety or add expensive extra costs. The effect can also damage the cars structure permanently. But by ensuring the wheels are precisely aligned, will be avoided. Motorists can eliminate the effects of any pothole or speed bump injury and make sure they stay as safe as possible.

The latest bad frosts will, without the doubt, multiply the quantity of potholes that cause the destruction. Because mud and snow could hide the potholes. Then it can cause some serious safety issues for motorists. If a driver knows that they have hit a pothole they must get their  Wheel Alignment

Road Potholes

Road Potholes; This bent steering arm caused because a car went down a pothole

Most garages will give you a free of a charge tracking (alignment) check, and you will only pay for the job if the wheel alignment is out, and it needs adjusting(except for Four-Wheel Alignment).

Wheel alignment should be carried out at regular intervalsRoad Potholes

Furthermore, to sum up, have your wheel alignment was done at regular periods, especially if you think that you have hit a deep hole or run over a safety hump at speed. Continually have the wheel alignment corrected if you are having new tyres mounted on your wheels. Your tyre centre may ask you to come back afterwards. Then a few days motoring will not effect the wear on your tyres. Have your pressures and tyre wear checked methodically. If you have any doubt which tyres to buy, then go for a mid-range make, this will mean that you get good quality tyres, and the tyres will be at a better price than a leading make. Once again a good garage or tyre depot will be happy to help and check your tyres free of charge. Also your wheel alignment of course.

2001 BMW 325 Lower control arm

2001 BMW 325 Lower control arm- bushing replacement and replacement Suspension arm

2001 BMW 325 Lower control arm

In this video, I am replacing the lower control arm bushings on a 2001 BMW 325i. The owner complained of a clunking sound coming from the front end while driving over rough pavement and when applying the brakes.

BMW 325 Suspension Arm-2001 Convertible with a rear wheel listing badly

Are suspension problems fairly common these days? The main culprit is “potholes” in the road. Cars can’t avoid them, especially in the dark. The BMW 325i was no exception.

The car was 2001 silver convertible. The guy had noticed one of the rear wheels protruding more at the top, than the bottom. The most common suspension fault on these models, is the inner bushings become soft and worn out. This allows the whole arm to move about.

The car can become unstable. The bushes problem is also responsible for camber problems and vibrations from the rear. Instability at the rear is the main dysfunction. Causing the car to feel unstable, due to the suspension arm moving.

2001 BMW 325 Lower control arm

Another problem can be, the tabs on the outer ends of the rear suspension arm are worn away. Consequently, the camber adjuster (on the outer bushing) will not be secure. This problem is because the “through bolt” bolt for the outer camber bushing not being fully tightened. Both these fault symptoms give the same

2001 BMW 325 Lower control arm

instability and balancing results when the BMW 325i is driven.

The repair of these problems is fairly easy to carry. The old bushes can be removed and replaced with new ones.

The BMW 325 Suspension Arm problem on this car ended up slightly different. The BMW had hit a large hole in the road. Subsequently, the car bottomed out. Damage caused to the BMW 325 Suspension Arm, was unrepairable.

The customer was informed about the repair costs. After permission from the driver, Dale one of my mechanics proceeded with the work. Another shock came from Dale after the wheels wee removed. The BMW also needed a full set of rear discs and pads.

The work to the BMW finished on time, and the customer went home happy, but a little lighter in the wallet.

General Tyres Retro Commercial

General Tyres Retro Commercial-general tyres are no doubt one of the best car and 4X4 tyres.

General Tyres Retro Commercial

General Tyres Retro Commercial; General tyres are now part the large Continental tyres organisation.  Continental General Tyre Corporation, is a leader in the manufacture, marketing, and export of all types of tyres.

The large European manufacturers of tyres fit tyres as original equipment on multiple makes of vehicles. Including Ford, Chevrolet, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, and Toyota. Continental replacement tyres are sold all over the world and are sold under the Continental and General brand names. Along with the company, they also manufacture, what is known as private-label tyres. These tyres can be shipped across Europe and the rest of the world through a network of independent dealers across the world. Consequently, we at Pellon tyres, in Halifax, Yorkshire, UK.

General Tyres Retro Commercial

1987, was the year when Continental added General tyres of America to the list of companies. General tyres are one of leading manufacturers of 4X4 tyres in the world. The company fitted a gap in the Continental tyres portfolio. Continental tyres have since carried on with the tradition of making excellent 4X4 tyres. The 4X4 tyres are the same high-quality materials as go into the manufacture of all the other Continental tyre products.

When first purchased, the General tyre company was downsized. Firstly the Canadian manufacturing facility plant was closed. Secondly, the General tyres retail chain was sold off because it was surplus to requirements. The big downer was the reduction number of employees by 20 percent. A massive blow to the workforce. General tyres split into three major business units. Unfortunately, along came the recession of the 1990’s. Further layoffs were necessary, reducing the moral of the remaining workforce.

Over the next years, General tyres struggled to make a profit, despite millions of dollars pumped into the company from the mother Continental company. The company was to be known as the Continental-General Corp. Increased tyre sales to the original equipment market for car and truck tyres, increased the companies profitability, and they are now one of the world’s leading tyre company.
