Tyre Aquaplaning- Watch out for sudden rain downpour? Especially with bald tyres.

Tyre Aquaplaning

Like the rest of the planet. Britain has been struck by large spells of torrential rain. Here in Halifax, UK, we are part of the Calder valley, river and canal Tyre aquaplaning system. The river Calder is surrounded by steep hills. Also with many small country roads at each side for much of its length. This has a funneling effect for any rain that falls. Especially, heavy rain.

This winter has seen really bad flooding in the Calder valley. As a result, towns such as Hebden Bridge and Mytholmroyd were very badly flooded.Tus, on Boxing Day of 2015.

Our area was deluged. Therefore, the water was coming down the country roads, like rivers. Accordingly, the vehicle in which I was travelling was fitted out with winter tyres. Because of this, I felt safe and secure in the knowledge that the car would not aquaplane. My car ploughed through the water and I felt confident that my winter tyres were disposing of all the water that the heavens could throw at us.

Tyre aquaplaning is caused when builds up in front of your tyres at a faster pace than the weight of your car can push out of the way. This causes the car to rise up, and creates a thin layer of water between your tyres and the road surface.

Tyre Aquaplaning

When this happens. Then, your car is virtually out of control, Of course, and can have a will of its own. Often, drifting out in any direction and even off the road. The worse scenarios are combined with the lack of tyre tread (bald tyres). We have all seen the effects. As a result on racing tyre slicks, (the racing tyres with no tread pattern at all) when there is a sudden downpour during a race.

Tyre aquaplaning

Winter tyre also help to get rid of the water between your vehicle and the road, because they contain millions of “sipes”, tiny slits that get rid of the water.

The race cars just lose total control, well this is what happens with your tyre aquaplaning.

Better still fit winter tyres, they are not just for the snow, but will get rid of most of the water and will make your life much safer, during any bad weather.

Also watch out when it rains for the first time after a dry spell. The rain mixes with the oil and other chemicals on the road surface and can make it very slippery. This condition often causes many crashes.

If you are driving through a storm and the rain gets too heavy then pull over and stop (when it is safe to do so of course).

225-45R17 Summer Tyre-Used in ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) tyre tests

225-45R17 Summer Tyre

These tyre tests are considered to be one of the most accurate and dependable tyre tests in the world. The ADAC is the German version of our RAC or AA. The testing is carried out and the results are compiled into data, rather than just a scoring method.

Continental racing tyres are one of the reasons why their tyres are number one in road testing.

It was no surprise to me that the Continental Sport Contact 5 tyre, once again came out the top tyre in a combination of all the testing data. Continental have also picked up more points in the tread wear part of the testing, and will be very difficult to beat in future tests.

New versions of tyres made by Michelin, Dunlop and Goodyear were not in the tests this year, but I still feel confident that Continental, with their 225-45R17 Summer Tyre, will be the top tyre for a few years to come.

225-45R17 Summer Tyre

This excites me because here at Pellon Tyres in Halifax UK, we are Continental stockists are also great fans of General tyres, one of the Continental owned brands that use the same quality ingredients to make both types of tyres. The fact that they are made by Continental gives us great confidence when we offer the very popular tyre size of the 225-45R17 Summer Tyre, to our customers, we know that they are the from the same factories and made from the same tyre materials and compounds.

Another brand that we offer in Halifax is the Apollo tyre brand of Vredestein tyres. Apollo-Vredestein came fourth behind third-place Pirelli tyres.

Michelin came in ninth place overall. There is no doubt at all that Michelin were very disappointed with the result.

  • The total tyre results for the winner of the 225-45R17 Summer Tyre, was the Continental scoring the following points-
  • Dry conditions 9.6
  • Wet Conditions 8.2
  • Rolling Resistance 7.8
  • Comfort 5.4- Giving a total of 39 points.

Renault Window Control Module-Windows cause Renault owners problems-goes down but not up?

Renault Window Control Module problem at Pellon Autocentre Halifax UK

This is becoming a regular issue for some Renault, car owner. The problem starts with the windows rattling and vibrating. This usually happens when theRenault Window Control Module electric window switch is operated. The cause of the problem comes from two sources, either electrical or mechanical.
If you can hear the electric motor running and attempting to turn, then the problem is likely to be a mechanical problem. The other scenario is if you can hear just a click and nothing happens, i.e., the window going up or down, then it will be an electrical fault. We have had cases where the window, decides to operate on its own.

This is usually a short out and therefore is also an electrical problem.

Renault Window Control Module

The particular car that we have had in recently had a fault because the window just did not go up or down. When examining the problem we had to remove the door cover and check out the door. Common causes are broken plastic clips and damaged steel cables.Hence, the steel cables are often rusted with condensation and as we all know the rust eventually leads to damaged parts. In this case, the steel cable was damaged. In other cases, we have found that the problem has been water entering the six pin Renault Window Control Module. This is fitted to the electric window motor. It can also lead to communication difficulties with the cars computer system. This can be the problem with your vehicle windows going up and down on their accord. In the case of our car, it meant that

The Window Control Module was replaced. As a result, this was a relatively easy job. It is very important however to clean and grease all the moving parts after the Renault Window Control Module is fitted. We tested the window. Naturally, everything was working fine before the car was returned to the customer.

Car Battery Problems-Or could it be your Car Alternator that is blamed.

Car Battery Problems

Unfortunately, the two things are very closely linked. Many customers call in knowing that they have car battery problems. The number one sign is quite evident? The car will not start. This is mainly in the cold weather of wintertime.

It can also become a problem in hot summer weather when the air conditioning is working at full pelt. This problem, can show up a failing battery and give the owner what

Car Battery Problems

Typical modern alternator

he thinks are car battery problems.

I must confess that the first thing we do is to test the battery and the alternator with the same piece of equipment. This usually fails the car battery, and we then fit a new one. Nine times out of ten, this will do the trick. However, a faulty alternator could make the original problem re-occur.

When we talk about car battery problems, we need to understand a little about, what the alternator does? The primary task is to keep the battery charge topped up at the correct level. This is when the driver is using a significant amount of electrics in the cars cab.

In winter time it will be the car lights and the heater system that takes much of the power from the battery and making the alternator work hard, replacing the charge back into the battery. This could also be a clue to the driver that the car is about to have some car battery problems.

Car Battery Problems

One of the first signs is that your cars lights may appear to be shining dimmer. This is usually an alternator problem. Too much or too little power back to your battery will make your lights dimmer.

This was more common on the older type, what I call “dynamo” alternators. Lights dimming were one of the first signs that the dynamo bushes, (that created the electricity to charge up the battery) were wearing down and therefore not doing the job correctly. When the alternator was not passing enough charge, then the light would dim, or the heater would work slowly and make a distinctly different noise to what it should make.

A good point about the older type of alternator is that it could be repaired, by fitting a new set of bushes. Older mechanics would remember this well. It was a job usually given to the junior member of the garage staff.

When the earlier alternators failed then, the first thing to happen would be that the driver would start to have car battery problems. What they did was to boil theCar Battery Problems battery almost dry, and the battery needed replacing. In many cases, the alternator would fail completely and would have to be repaired along with fitting a new car battery.

Car Battery Problems

The more modern car alternator is much more complicated. They are indeed connected to the entire cars electrical system via the cars ECU (on-board computer). The modern alternator works similar to a smart charger, applying a constant charge replacement to the battery in a more efficient manner than the old type dynamo charger.

This type of alternator usually fails because of a faulty circuit board and will fail at once. These alternators are repaired by specialist companies, and we buy them as we need them as exchange units.

One thing that we have learned about batteries and alternators is that when a battery goes, we here at Pellon Autocentre in Halifax UK, always check the cars alternator when we fit a new battery. This gives us a piece of mind that the new battery won’t be damaged by a faulty alternator in a few weeks’ time.
