My garage Pellon tyre and Autocentre has now been operating for over 35 years. As a result and we have a reputation that is second to none. Over the years we have built up a fantastic reputation and trust.

Because, we have always been straight and honest with our customers. Hence, I personally have been the owner of this garage here in Halifax. For the past 25 years. In that time we have carried out thousands of MOT tests. Of course, we have always used our best discretion. Carrying out MOT Testing. Having always had the customer’s best interest to heart.

Over the years we have only had one small dispute with a customer. Subsequently, that was the fault of our tester at the time. Replacing him as soon as we could. Thus, at the moment we only have two testers. Ryan Linton, who in my opinion is a first class mechanic. Naturally, a person and has worked for me for 22 years. We now have a second tester Mr Dale Linton.

The point that I am getting at is the massive effort that we at Pellon have put into our garage and MOT testing service,

This was in my opinion undermined. So, when I heard a guy been interviewed on radio 2. This presenter was from a website telling us how we can save money. Advising the listeners to go to the  Local Councils. Thus, for their car MOT testing. Because if they went there. Then they would not be taken for a ride or ripped off. Consequently, he was basically saying that we MOT Centres Vehicle Testing Stations. So that carry out MOT testing fail the cars intentionally. In order to give themselves the work repairing the car.

 This could not be further from the truth. VOSA DVLA MOT Testing Rules statistics. Show that privately owned testing stations. As a result, are more likely to pass the car than fail the car. The money website claims that the local council run testing stations. Therefore, are more likely to pass your car than a private garage. Such as the  likes of my own garage in Halifax. So what they are saying is we are corrupt. By failing cars just to get the mechanical work.

Other things that I am not happy with are the good reviews that they say they have had from customers of the local council testing stations. One says that they fitted a light bulb and then they passed the car, the council test stations do not do any mechanical work whatsoever, so this was a porky.

Another one stated that his car had failed at a private garage and the car needed £400 spending on it to pass the test, so the guy took his car to the council test station and they passed his without any problems. I frankly do not believe what they say, I agree that we

are not all squeaky clean in the garage trade but we are well regulated by VOSA and if the figures for different failures do not look right ,then VOSA will give you a visit and try see whats going on.

But I rang round today and found out that they have now started to discount the tests, I think that they are under pressure  to do more testing from the cash strapped councils. In fact we did get a notification asking us if we would like to carry out testing on behalf of the council, but I declined the offer as we are busy enough anyway.

Another problem with the local council test stations is that if your car fails, then you then have to go to a garage for the work carrying out and then they have to go back to the council for a re- test. This is a long way round when a private garage will in most cases would have done the work on the car the same day, saving the customer time and money.

There is no evidence at all to back up the Money websites claims and there are no statistics from VOSA that MOT Testing stations that carry out repair work fail more cars than council run MOT testing stations.  It is really clear that going to a MOT only testing stations, such as the council run operations, is likely to incur considerable more cost and personnel inconvenience, especially if the car fails on a minor fault, such as a light bulb and has to make another appointment for a re-test.

VOSA the government department in charge of MOT testing are always watching out for garages with bad practices and make regular visits to offending garages. MOT garages are also given colour codes that relate to their testing standard, Green is the best, then Amber, and the worse standard is Red, these are the ones that the ministry keep a careful eye on. It is worth finding out what standard the testing station is, before you book your car in. I am proud to say that we at Pellon Autocentre are in the best lane, the Green lane.

As the owner of an older car I have been tempted to use the Council test stations. This year I had two MOT tests by two different independent garages. Garage No 1 failed the car on rear brake pipes and front and rear brake hoses with both front suspension bushes advisory – cost of repairs £344 inc MOT.

Garage No 2 failed the car on front and rear brake pipes and the suspension bushes and said the brake hoses were advisory with mild corrosion on the ferrules and discoloration of rear indicator bulbs which had been replaced by Garage No1 the year before – cost of repairs £601 inc MOT.

The only thing that puts me off using the Council testing stations is that if you fail you then have to fend around for someone to fix the car within the retest period which takes time and I’ve found some garages don’t want to do brake pipe jobs if they are busy with bolt on type repairs. So I think you make a fair point in favour of the independent garage for practical purposes but as my example shows, there is a lack of consistency with garages both in testing and pricing.

Along the line. I have written many articles about the use of Used car tyres. Some have been posted to LinkedIn. Hence,  I have received many different replies. Consequently, from other garage and tyre shop owners across the World. This information gives me some feedback. Also, a bigger picture of what other people in the same industry are feeling. Thus, about an individual subject, including the use of part worn, or Used car tyres. Here in the UK Tyre Industry. Some tyre shops are in fact sympathetic towards the car users.

In other words. They can only buy what they can afford to buy. This is the reason that there are thousands of small. What I call bucket shops.Hence, springing up all over the UK.

Also opening around the many car washes. That are also opening up on old petrol station sites. Also, on any demolished building site. I have no qualms about this. In fact.Most of my family go to these places for their cars washing; they are cheap and fast and do a good job.

These car washes are also the places that have started to sell second-hand cars and Used car tyres. Going back to the car wash situation, I have noticed that many of these businesses just let their dirty water go down the nearest drain, without any treatment or filtering. We all know that we have environmental responsibilities when dealing with such things, but I cannot help feeling that these car washes are breaking the law, by just dumping the dirty water plus the chemicals down the drain and I assume into the nearest river causing pollution to the environment. My main point about the same type of companies selling Used car tyres. You must have noticed that the car wash people can stack up old car tyres on the same premises. Going back a couple of years. Thus, the environment agency cracked down. Therefore, on any legitimate tyre business or garage. That stacked up their old tyres. Visible to the public. Because of this, I and many others went out and bought a container to store the scrap tyres in, so that they could not be seen and were hidden away.

It was all about being a responsible tyre depot owner and the environment. We still do this today all our scrap tyres are stored away out of site, but what about this car wash centres and partly used tyre shops. They appear to be working under a different law and rules to the rest of us. I see old tyres just piled up for weeks on end on the open show to passers-by, This is another thing that the environment agency seem to have passed by and forgotten about. Any company that disposes of the waste tyre must operate in the “duty of care act”. This links me to my main point, and that is that I now believe that because some people need a car but cannot afford to buy cheap new tyres, then they have to buy Used car tyres. We all know.that organisations such as the great Tyresafe.org have worked out that Used car tyres are more expensive in the long run, but the fact is that there were 6 million part worn tyres sold last year that did not meet the basic safety standards. This fact comes from some recent research by the Liverpool Victoria Insurance company.

According to TyreSafe UK, a staggering 23 million Used car tyres have been fitted to cars since 2009 and a quarter of those did not come under the legal requirements and that 1.5 million

drivers were driving their cars with potentially dangerous tyres, and probably not even knowing of the threat to themselves and other road users.

One of the most worrying things is that most drivers do not even know anything about part worn tyres. Consequently, that part worn tyres come under any regulations or laws. Thus, think that the businesses who sell them these tyres, know what they are doing. But the evidence that I have seen on some of the tyres that have been fitted, clearly show that these people just do not care what they provide to their customer’s cars.

Here at Pellon tyres in Halifax, we get many part worn tyre clients who come to us with problems after they have fitted part worn tyres. We see tyres with sidewall cuts and damaged beads. The common one is for directional tyres that are fitted the wrong way round, with the direction arrows pointing to the rear, the wrong way round. Also, we see the wrong sizes mounted on the same axle and different constructions fitted to the same axle. I am not saying that all tyre shops that fit part worn tyres do this, but I think that many do.

The problem is that the customers believe that the tyre shop should know what they are doing and just leave it up to them. As I have said earlier some motorists are under financial pressures, but they must look out for the dealers who are knowingly selling illegal part worn tyres. A sign should be to look at what the place looks like, if it looks a dump then they will probably selling rubbish. Indeed I have noticed that some reputable tyre dealers have started to sell part worn tyres because they have had to do this to compete. I suspect that if you do have to buy a part worn tyre, then these would be the safer place to buy them?

I could not believe my eyes when we were presented with this beautiful MGB sport car for its MOT test. I am just going to show the pictures so that you can see for yourself how nice this car is. SOME TIMES THIS IS WHAT A BLOG IS ABOUT.

The MGB was a very sought after car in the sixties and seventies

In my opinion was one of the signs that you were doing better in life if you owned one, I had the poor relation the MG Midget. I remember working for a Dunlop tyres subsidiary at the time and the MG was fitted with 165×14 Mainly Pirelli Cinturato textile radials. The guys who owned them (it was a man’s car and not many females owned one) were mainly self-employed builders and architects, this was the car for them.

The fascinating thing to me though was that out of the 387,000 cars produced 90% were sold in America, where they were as popular as they were in the UK. These cars were built from 1962 to the last car in 1980. The first MGB GT versions rolled off the production line, in 1965 and by the end over 125,000 of these splendid cars were built, with about a third going for export.

The MGB became the World top selling sports car selling well over half a million cars and was the bestselling British sports car of all time. By this time the cars were fitted with more of the Dunlop tyre products, and working for a Dunlop subsidiary meant that we had more and more of these excellent sports cars entering our auto centre for tyres and car servicing.

Over the years the MGB retained its popularity and even now in 2014 there are many companies making and selling spare parts. You can even buy full body shells. This was launched by British Motor heritage back in 1988 and the shell was also used to produce the MG RV8 in 1992.

Tyre Pressures are very important for your Caravan or Motorhome

Many thousands of people will be getting their caravans and motorhomes ready for the British bank holiday season starting this year with the Easter holiday. This is time when thousands of holiday makers will be checking their tyres and tyre pressures, ready for their first trips away.

We do this every year ,even though we know that we will be stuck in massive traffic jams and hold ups, wherever we go, but especially to the coast. Never the less we do it every year, we Brits yearn to get away over the bank holiday period and the adjoining school holidays.

What we do not all do is to check our tyres and Tyre Pressures ? You would think that it was common sense, but many set off and do not think anything about it. These are the ones that we see on the hard shoulder of the motorway or the grass verge, changing a flat tyre or a blown out tyre on their caravan. The worse culprits seem to be the guys who are going camping and towing a little trailer. These small trailers are usually fitted with 400×8 trailer tyres, similar to wheel barrow tyres. Because they are so small, it is imperative that you inflate them to the correct

Tyre Pressures for carrying the weight that you have in the trailer, this will usually be the highest pressure for this type trailer.

I have seen hundreds of these trailers parked up with a wheel missing because of the tyre blown out and the owner not having a spare the same size. If you use this type of vehicle, then you must carry a spare wheel, if you are doing sixty mile an hour and you have a puncture in one of these trailers, then the small tyre will simply disintegrate, because of its small size and the weight that it is carrying, so a spare wheel is a necessity. Also make sure that you are buying a spare wheel for a trailer, these are usually a six ply tyre that are made for highway and NOT a wheel barrow tyre. I have mentioned this because many people make this huge mistake, we have seen this many times.

This is also a important thing to think about when buying a new tyre for a caravan or mobile home. Make sure that you buy the right tyre that has the correct weight carrying loads; It should tell you what tyres to use in the hand book or make sure that you fit the same tyres as your vehicles original equipment.

In the motor homes the tyres are usually of a higher ply rating than normal car tyres. As we all know some of these vehicles are massive even as big as a double decker bus, so it is very important to get the exact tyres with correct ply rating and load rating, in my opinion it is always best to fit the exact same tyres, even the same makes of tyres, as your original equipment. This will ensure your safety and probably your fuel consumption. I know that our customers are on a tight budget but in this instance buying cheap tyres is not an option, if the vehicle is fitted with Michelin tyres then replace them with exactly the same using the same tyre pressures and them unless you are really unlucky you should have a problem free journey as far as your tyres are concerned.

As I have said earlier fuel consumption is very important for the motor home as some of these vehicles will only do about fifteen to twenty mile to the gallon. So having the correct tyre pressures will help to maintain the correct mileage performance. How it works is that if your tyres are under inflated then your vehicle engine has to work much harder to drive along. This is known as “ROLLING RESISTANCE”

Also a good tip is to check your tyre pressures when the tyres are cold and also make sure that you have a valve cap fitted, to ensure that the valve does not leak and reduce your tyre pressures.

You should always know what the weight limit is for your type of vehicle and do not exceed these recommendations. Also spread out the weight throughout the vehicle, this will

maximise the stability of the total unit, we have all followed caravans that are swerving about doing sixty mph on the motorway, it is also illegal and dangerous.

Another really important point that is sometimes overlooked is to keep a spare wheel for your caravan or camping trailer. Also try it on the vehicle before you set off on your journey; we have had to help many caravan owners who were stuck on the M62 motorway because their spare wheel did not fit. We have all seen the massive increase in mobility scooter ownership over the past ten years or so. It is now a massive market place for the companies that sell the scooters and the mobility scooter, batterycompanies who sell spare parts, including consumables such as scooter batteries and scooter tyres.

In the past few years however safety organisations have become increasingly alarmed about the increase in accidents and general safety and looking after their scooters and equipment. Many minor accidents are reported and many are not reported, so that many accidents do not get into the statistics, probably only the serious ones are reported and are found out about.

One accident in particular comes to mind, that is the story about the lady and her mobility scooter that fell off the platform at Barnsley railway station, onto the track in front of an oncoming train. The lady came from nearby Monk Bretton and had to be airlifted by the air ambulance to hospital. This is one of the many accidents that are reported but many are not.

The most common incidents occur in shopping centres when shoppers are run over by these scooters. Because they are operated by mobility scooter AGM batteries, they are almost silent and some people cannot hear them coming from behind, some shoppers just walk out from a store, straight into the path of an oncoming scooter causing an accident.

Other probably more dangerous accidents occur on the roads. Where my garage is in Halifax, we are on a fairly steep hill and on most days you will see elderly people what I could call “flying” down the hill as fast as they can go, we are situated on a set of traffic lights and they hardly ever stop at the red light, either when they are on the road or on the pavement and how there has not been a bad accident do not know?

Here in the UK we are starting to realize that Second Hand Mobility Scooters drivers should be shown the danger’s and be more aware of the problems that they could face when they are on a trip out, especially now that spring is here and the scooter owners will have a better chance of getting out and about. As a side note scooter owners should check their Leisure Batteries , mobility scooter, batteryfor charge and the general condition of the batteries before they venture out. If you are not sure about the 12 Volt Battery  then they are better replaced, so that you can carry out the journey without running out of power and struggling to get home. It is well worth investing in new mobility scooter batteries every two years.

Tyresafe.org are launching a wealth of free advice to increase the safety of scooter riders when they are out on the road. Although these scooters are easy to drive, the problem arises because of the lack of knowledge that the scooter drivers have when driving on the roads. In fact many of these drivers have never driven a car before and know nothing about road safety or the Highway Code.

Tyresafe have moved into give the scooter driver’s advice on their tyres. They have started off by recommending that their tyres should be checked at least three times a week. The scooters handbook will give the correct pressure. Just like car tyres it is very important to put the correct pressures into the tyres, if the pressures are too low then the scooter will be unstable and would swerve and also wear out the tyres tread and as a I have seen first-hand, the tyres will blowout, causing the scooter to become stranded with a flat and damaged tyre, so it is most important to check your tyre pressures and if you are disabled ask an able bodied person to help you, you can also drive or take your scooter to your local tyre centre who would only be too pleased to check your tyres for FREE.

Finally, to ensure proper grip, especially in wet conditions, riders should check that their tyres have sufficient tread depth. Scooters with less than 50cc need to have all of the grooves of the original tread pattern visible whereas those over 50cc must have at least 1mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of the tyre with visible tread on the remaining mobility scooter, batteryquarter…

Air-con was one of the last things that you would have needed here in the United Kingdom’s cool climate, but now that we have it in almost every vehicle, I do not know how we did without it? This time of year is when our customers are starting to get their cars ready for the summer and this includes have their Car Air-Conditioning system serviced.

I must admit though that I remember the pre-Car Air-Conditioning days of motoring on a hot summer’s day. In those days, the only way to cool down was to open the car’s windows and stick your head out of the window. Not only that I also remember when the cars windows would steam up in spring and winter, due to condensation, this has now stopped because of car air-conditioning fitted to most cars. We used to arrive at our destination dripping with sweat, with our legs sticking to our trousers and other bits, all because the cars did not have air-con systems

Although they had far more hot days and they really did need it especially in the Southern states. Air-con in the car was actually invented and used in America as far back as 1939 and Packard were the first car makers to install Car Air-Conditioning as far back as 1940, and although it was a crude system compared to today’s cars Used Cars, it was

better than nothing at all. In fact, it was Chrysler that was the first to introduce a properly integrated air-con system into their cars in 1953 as an optional extra. By 1970 almost half the cars in America were installed with Car Air-Conditioning and us in Europe were still miles behind.

At the same time in 1970 the USA adopted a new “Clean air act”, but the regulations for motor vehicles did not come into force until 1990. This meant that the refrigerants inside the Car Air-Conditioning had to be re-cycled and a different refrigerant had to be used. The gas that we all use at the moment is the R134A, but we think that a newer gas will be used in the near future. European car manufacturers quickly followed suit and air-con was installed in all of the big production cars such as BMW and Mercedes and was quickly followed by the family car market, down to the small cars made by Citroen and the Toyota Yaris.

The main parts of the car air-con system consist of the Air Conditioning Condenser Unit, compressor and evaporator and a few other parts that, these all work together to remove and cool the humidity that is in the air and circulate it into and through the car, the warm humid air is replaced with cool air at the temperature that you set it at. That is until things such as the Car Air-Conditioning Condenser start to go wrong.

It is a well-known fact that cars fitted with air-con use more fuel and so some drivers switch of the air-con when the weather is cold. It is in actual fact false economy to switch off your air-con in winter. This is an extract from the Autokool website…http://www.autokool.co.uk/faq_13.html

On the coldest of days turn the system on to ensure that the windows are demisted and the interior of the car is comfortable. With modern engines and increased fuel efficiency the cost of using your vehicle air conditioning system has been considerably reduced with modern advancements in engineering”.

As a tyre retailer for 40 years, this is an increasing problem for the modern motorist.When the car manufacturers had to make their cars lighter so that they could hit their emission targets, then they looked at many ways to lighten the weight of their cars to make them lighter including different ways of doing without a SPARE TYRE and  wheel.

The problem has been that the car makers did not come up with any universal and unified method of doing this, and so different cars have differing systems for the replacement of your spare tyre. The problem is that when you buy a car it is the last thing on your mind, to check out the spare wheel system for that particular model of car.

This was one of the first ideas to come from the car manufacturers. In theory the idea is not too bad. If you look into your boot you will see a very thin looking wheel. With a thin looking

car tyre that actually resembles a motor bike tyre. The wheels are usually painted a bright colour, bright red or bright blue, to distinguish the spare wheel from the wheels on the car. The space saver car SPARE TYRE is a different size to the rest of the tyres on the car, but is the same overall diameter (height) so that when it is fitted to the car then it keeps a balanced driver experience, when the wheel is being driven on. The space saver spare tyre is regulated to 50 MPH when used because the tyre is much thinner and can only carry the cars weight at a slower speed.Once the tyre is fitted it is important to get your original puncture fixed and return it to the car, this will not then restrict your speed.

Run Flat tyre system

The cars that are fitted with Bridgestone Run Flat Tyres  do not have a spare tyre at all. The technology is in the actual tyres. When you get a puncture in a run flat  the increased strength in the tyres structure supports the weight of the cars weight without having any air in. This is only a temporary fix and once again the car must not exceed 50MPH. The other downside of the run flat tyres is that because the tyre has been run on and they are usually damaged beyond repair and a new one is required. The main advantage is though, that if you do get a puncture then you can just drive the car at 50MPH in relative safety without the car deviating and the driver having to get out of the car and changing a wheel.

This is simply a can of tyre repair solution that you screw onto the tyres valve and it release a solution into the tyre a hopefully seals the hole that has caused the puncture. In my opinion this is the most unsatisfactory system. In the perfect scenario when you just have small nail or screw in the centre of your tyre, then the repair kit would probably work, but this is not the

usual case, in all my experience, most tyres succumb to side wall damage, or larger repairs that the emergency repair kit will not be able to cope with. The last car that I had with this system was a |Nisan Juke. Because we travel to France a couple of times a year, we needed a spare tyre so we found an alloy wheel that fitted the studs and fitted a new spare tyre, you will also need a small jack and a wheel brace, because these are not supplied by the car manufacturers. This is an easy thing to do if you have a friendly tyre retailer and well worth the effort to cover yourself in case you have a dreaded puncture in the middle of nowhere.  

The main gist of this though is to make sure you know which spare tyre system that is provided with your car and familiarise with it. Some car owners are lucky enough to have the old fashioned spare wheel fitted complete with a jack and a wheel brace.

Jacking up your car the correct way

You may think that jacking up your is an exact science but believe me plenty can go wrong. Even our most experienced mechanics can make a mistake when jacking up a car. The worse

thing to happen is if the jack is placed under a sill and not the re-enforced area just under the edge of car. Most models of car have a special re-enforced part at the front of the sill area and is marked by a notch in the metal to show you where you can jack up your car without it going through the softer sill part of the body just under the car doors.

The jacking points are usually illustrated in the owner’s manual, but if you do not know where the jacking points  are and are not sure, then DO NOT jack the car up, leave to a professional , who knows what they are doing.

If you are confident or stuck somewhere with a flat tyre then this is something that you should tackle. The first thing to do is to make sure that you are on a HARD SURFACE. Please do not try to jack your car up on a grass verge or a field, anywhere that is soft. The obvious thing to happen is that the car jack will just sink, and unless you have some wooden blocks in the car then the job will be hopeless.

Once you have established that the ground is hard enough then you should look for and remove your wheel removing kit from the car boot. This usually consists of a scissor jack, wheel brace and locking wheel nut tool (if your car has one). The car jacking point is marked by a cut out in the metal plate on the front and rear of the car; this shows the strongest place to jack up the car. Once this is all done then you can say a prayer and hope that the wheel nuts are not seized up or over tightened, from the last time that the wheel was removed. If the wheel is over tightened then you may have to get help or call out a nearby garage for assistance.

Some drivers know about this and carry a hollow piece of strong metal tubing in their tool kit to give them leverage on their wheel brace. It is also wise to keep a small thick piece of wood in your tool kit to place on the jack as you start to lift the car. This gives the jack a better bite, instead of the metal on metal of the jack and the car sill.

Some more advanced motorists will keep a small trolley jack in their car for jacking up with

 for a safer jacking experience, in my opinion good preparation is the word. It is no different in the professional garage, we have always to be safety conscious when jacking up cars, either with a trolley jack or on the vehicle ramps, the same should apply to the DIY motorists.

The more experienced person who carries out their own cars repairs should be able to jack a car up by using the steering and suspension jacking points, but it is always a good point to

make sure that you have some good strong axle stands to rest the car on before you commence working on your car and the same applies to a hard surface when lifting the car, all these points may seem trivial but as a garage owner of over 40 years, I have seen many stupid things happen, that were only due to thoughtlessness on the behalf of the mechanic.

When jacking up your Used Cars  you can get a feeling if the thing is not going right, so if you hear any strange creaking noises or metallic sounds then let the car jack down with care and start again, care is the buzz word. I suppose thinking about it; this is why the breakdown services are very busy, there are now many different types of wheels and jacks on today’s modern cars and if you are not sure or confident please join one of the motoring breakdown services such as the AA or RAC here in the UK.
