Accident data strengthens Winter Tyres Work argument,

Snow and ice were the cause of more than 6,000 road accidents in Great Britain last year, according to statistics issued by the Department for Transport (DfT) this week.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Snowing scenes like this call for “Winters to be fitted ” Winter Tyres Work

Winter tyres have in the past three years helped millions of motorists to

make safer journeys and arrive home safely, remember Winter Tyres Work . We are now approaching the time, usually November time when you should fit your winter tyres, or if you do not have any then you should consider buying yourself a set.

Even if you can’t afford a set of four then it is it is still a better and safer proposition to fit a pair on your drive wheels. Out of all the thousands of customers that have had winter tyres fitted, I have never had a single complaint about the  performance, in fact most drivers will give them a raving revue.

Winter Tyres Work

When the weather gets this bad then Winter Tyres Work

This is one of the reasons why the fleet companies are fitting winters to their fleets?Winter Tyres Work . They know that it makes sense to fit them for the safety aspect and also they know that it will benefit the drivers, when they are out in snow and also wet weather, and when the fleets buy them you know they must be good as they will not waste a penny unless it is necessary.

Winter Tyres Work its a fact

We at Pellon Tyres here in Halifax West Yorkshire recommend that you should go for an economy winter tyre such as Jinhu winters if you are on a low budget, or an excellent mid-range tyre is the Nokian winters  and for the SUV or larger sedan type of cars you could look no further that choosing a leading make such as Michelin or Bridgestone winters , they are all excellent products. As the article says there was 6000 road accidents here in the UK,due to snow and ice, according to the Department of Transport (DFT)

Wheel Vibrations-Wheel Balancing could be the problem? Especially when motorway driving

Wheel Vibrations

Wheel Vibrations

So you love your job, and your family life is great. Congratulations! You have achieved balance. But can you say the same for your wheels? You can tell if your tires are out of wheel balancing  by Wheel Vibrations at higher speeds on MN …

eric roberts‘s insight:

Wheel Balancing and Wheel Vibrations

This is another good article that is trying to emphasize the importance of having your wheels balanced. These days you will have your wheels balanced every time you have a new tyre fitted, it has become standard practice throughout the tyre industry. At one time in the distant past we would charge extra for new tubeless valves fitting and for balancing, but as I say this is now included in the total price, when you buy a new tyre.

The only problem is ,that your balance weights could come off and cause your wheels to have Wheel Vibrations, this will make your steering wheel shake  or you may feel a vibration coming through the car seat. This is caused by the rear wheels being out of balance, the front wheels cause your steering wheel to vibrate.

Wheel Vibrations

This symptom of Wheel Vibrations  is easy to remedy by calling into your nearest Tyre centre and having the wheels re-balanced, a quick and easy job to do. You will then enjoy a vibration free driving experience.

Thanks Eric Roberts…www.mot-halifax.co.uk

Wheel Vibrations underrated by drivers

Wheel balancing. Is perhaps one of the most underrated parts of your cars performance, and stability. Especially when the car is driven at higher speeds. Say on a motorway. We all know the feeling when the steering wheel starts to shake. As a result, and Wheel Vibrations start at a certain speed. Usually at speeds of 50 mph and above.

Before the out of balance on the wheel in question starts to kick in the shaking can be felt through your steering wheel or if the rear wheels are also out of balance, then the rear of the car will start to shake, and if you have passengers in the rear seats, then they will feel the shaking through the rear seats and into their bodies. Wheel balancing should be carried out whenever the Wheel Vibrations takes place, it is a good idea to call into your local Autocentre, and have the wheel balancing re-done.

One of the most common reasons for the wheel balancing to go out of synchronization is for a balance weight to come off the wheel Car Wheels. This can be caused by the wheel catching the walk way and knocking the weight off accidentally. Normally a balance weight will stay on the wheel until the next new car tyre is fitted  and the driver will never feel any vibrations through the steering wheel and if it does then the remedy is simple and relatively cheap to correct.

RENAULT MEGANE-Fails MOT Test (miserably?) massive rust problems.

RENAULT MEGANE Turns up for the MOT test with a massive hole in the sills

RENAULT MEGANE,mot test

Renault Megan with huge hole in the sill

When you run an MOT test centre, we see all sorts of things on the cars that we test. In general motorists a re very good and the majority look after their cars. We do however the opposite end of the scale and are presented with cars that are dropping to bits. The majority of cars fail on silly little things, such as light bulbs that do not work. These include Headlights, indicators, brake lights, any damaged reflectors and your headlamp aim, they are all easy to check out if you need more information about you MOT test you can check on the VOSA web-site the governing body that oversees the MOT test system here in the UK.WE at Pellon MOT centre here in Halifax UK, recommend that the car owner should check his car over before presenting it to an MOT station for testing.

If you are the owner of a French car you are likely to have a first time fail. Citroen, Peugeot, and Renault were all in the bottom five brands for first time cars being tested for the first time. The worse French car to fail the test was the Renault Megane. Only 71% of these cars that were registered in 2008 actually passed their first MOT test, what does that say?

Megane turns up for MOT test

This brings me on to a little story that happened today Monday  23rd 2013 We had a Renault Megane booked in for an MOT test. The Renault Megane turned up and Ryan Linton, our tester proceeded to carry out the test. When it came to checking for corrosion he found a well rotted rusty sill that he could nearly fit his fist through. He also found that the front discs brakes were rotten with rust.  A few other things were failures, some light bulbs were gone and the catalytic convertor was in need of replacing. Altogether a very expensive MOT test.

White Jaguar XF estate calls in for a new tyre

Post updated  11/2/2014

Luckily for us the White Jaguar XF had the blowout just outside the depot and had new tyre fitted

We all need a bit of luck in business, every little helps. This Saturday morning (21/9/2013) turned out to be a very busy day. In fact we were heading for a record Saturday mornings takings. I usually go in on a Saturday to help with running about jobs, and I always take my camera, in case anything good happens, for example a nice looking car, or a classic car comes in for a battery fitting or a new set of tyres. There is always something interesting to photo and this Saturday was no exception.White Jaguar XF

The first thing that I liked was a lovely white Land Rover Discovery, for a new set of 255/55R19 Pirelli Scorpion tyres fitting. The Discovery 4 was in immaculate condition and I could not resist taking some pictures for my blog. This car has been made to carry heavy loads and is powered by a 3 litre inter-cooled turbo diesel engine, it has an eight speed automatic gearbox and is a car to be proud of. For more information about the Discovery 4…http://www.landrover.com/

The next car that came in this morning was the White Jaguar XF with a tyre blowout.

The car was owned by a local businessman from the village of Sowerby which is near Halifax. He was passing Pellon Tyres when he felt his car moving to the centre of the road, he had an instant deflation in his rear drivers side tyre, luckily for us he was right outside our tyre depot and limped in with his White Jaguar XF. Like the Discovery this was a lovely car and I had to take a couple of pictures for this blog.

The car was a White Jaguar XF estate car Know as the “Sports brake”, in white and was fitted on 245/45R18 Pirelli P-Zero tyres, we had a tyre in a fitted it to the Jaguar and the guy was off, simple! In my opinion this is a wonderful car and a pleasure to work on.

Motorcodes new warranty scheme

Hi- to be a member of Unipart car Care centres, we must also be a member of motorcades. Motorcades garage network members have to be vetted by the RAC.

A qualified guy comes to check us from the RAC (Now the AA) and examines our garage and our garage system to see if it conforms to certain standard. This is to ensure that the standard of our workmanship and procedures are up the the high standards that Motorcodes expects.

Motorists should always look out for the nearest motorcodes garage in their area to ensure good workmanship with a guarantee that you can take up motorcodeswith motorcodes should there be a dispute.

To cap it off Motor codes Garage of the Year also have a fair price policy and we always keep the old parts for the customer to look at, all very honest and above board. Motorcodes are all now part of the UK trading Standard organisation. They have also moved from the RAC to the AA for depot accreditation.

Clean Garage- It could be a matter of Survival for small Independent garages.

Franchise Dealer garages showed us the way to a Clean Garage

As an independent garage and tyre retailer, there is one thing that I admire about franchise and main dealer garages, that’s that they have always led the way in the presentation and cleanliness of their premises. I suppose that you could well argue that selling a new or second hand car is different to selling tyres, or servicing cars, but you have got to admire their presentation and a Clean Garage in the eyes of the public, and I admire them for that. Many of you who read this article will be from a franchise environment and it will be interesting to hear some feedback about where the ideas actually come from. Perhaps a lot of the ideas come from the car manufacturers that the garages sell the cars for, the bigger the manufacturer the better the décor and cleanliness seems to be.

We independents, especially the “one man band” operations have always had to cope on our own and the state of the garages always depended on the cleanliness and training of the owner or manager, in other words a scruffy owner would probably have a dirty old fashioned garage.

Clean Garage

A nice Clean Garage reception is very important for today’s garage customers

I think in the 70’s here in the UK, that we were guilty of bad housekeeping and even the large chains that were owned by the tyre manufacturer such as National tyres and Tyreservices were trading in the dark ages and were no better than the one man band garages. Once a new branch had opened they were usually painted and decorated in the company’s logo, but after that it was all downhill and the depot turned into a normal type dirty garage. Of course it depended on the manager some managers even gave the depot a lick of paint from the petty cash, but in general these large companies did not have a “repair and renewal budget” to keep the Clean Garage up to scratch.

Then came along the Kwikfit chain of garages.

In my opinion, “love them or hate them” Kwikfit came along and raised the standard. Tom Farmer the founder of the company visited the USA and saw the high standards that the American garages had climbed to. When he took over some of the old Firestone retail depots to form Kwik Fit Exhausts, he brought the American way of tyre retailing to the UK. Everything was to a high standard and clean, the staff were clean and wore corporate clothing, just like the main dealer franchise garages.

This to me was a great inspiration and to compete with Kwik Fit Tyres, we made sure that we kept our own garages “spic and span” maintaining cleanliness and the décor to the highest standards that we could afford.  The type of image that Kwikfit put out was replicated by many people who were then working in the tyres and garages businesses across the UK. We could see that once a customer had visited Kwikfit, then they weren’t going to go back to dirty old garages down a back street any more, “the Clean Garage standards were raised”, for good.

Garages today should have no excuses for looking shabby. We all have busy days or lousy wet weather when our floors look a mess, but that’s acceptable as long as we have a good old fashioned “sweep up” at the end of the day. The other month, I had to call into a garage on my travels because I got caught short and needed the toilet, (my age), it was in Lancashire on my way to a Point-S meeting. The garage guys were very kind and let me use the toilet. My God? I wished I had not bothered the toilets were disgusting, they were filthy, the sink was cracked and the hot water did not work,”wow”, I thanked them and went on my way. We should all have well decorated clean toilets for our customers to use if nature calls. Our customers deserve high standards, they deserve a nice reception area to sit in, while they wait for their car to be repaired, they deserve a well decorated clean and tidy garage with nice clean well-dressed staff to repair their cars. They deserve staff that wear protective gloves and use car mats and wing covers to keep their well-loved cars clean while they are in for repair or a service. If they do not get all this then you will be a looser, especially that now we have many female customers calling in to our garages and tyre centres.

Don’t forget that the franchise garages are now offering cheap tyres sold to them by the wholesalers, and cut price servicing, so we must pull our “fingers out” and keep up Clean Garage high standards to compete in the future.

Clean Garage floor should painted every year (if possible)

Flat Tyres-Self Healing Polymer Will Make Flat Tyres Things of the Past

Flat Tyres

Flat Tyres may be a thing of the past?

Remember how the T-100 terminator robot from Terminator 2 could heal itself? Have you ever wondered how cool it would be to own something that would do the same thing, like busted plastic pipes or flat tyres that repair …

eric roberts‘s insight:

Is an end to puncture repairs what the tyres industry want ?

I have been in the tyre business now for a long time and one of the things that we do on a daily basis, is to repair punctured tyres. I have always considered repairing

Flat Tyres

Flat Tyres requiring a repair

punctures as part of the wider service that we offer to our customers. It is nice to see a smiling face when we tell our customers that their tyre will repair and instead of the bill for a new tyre, they only have to pay a small amount for their tyre repairing, making them very happy customers. Also we can get drivers call in with Flat Tyres that do need a new tyre, that’s tough but its all part of repairing tyres and the service that we offer.

There have been many attempts by companies to provide different cans of chemicals to repair Flat Tyres but in my opinion they have failed, but with the advent of the cars without spares and runflat tyres companies are always on the lookout for new materials that will seal a nail hole or screw hole when the tyre is penetrated known as Run Flat Tyres Repair, Continental have come with a special tyre that may protect the driver from a penetration in their Flat Tyres, but now it looks like they are experimenting with polymer materials which replicate our own skin by healing themselves, providing the damage caused is not too great.

Flat Tyres

Sicherheitsreifen, safety tire, runflat system (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

As thus article states some of these polymers have been around since WW11 and were created when there was a shortage of rubber. Scientists in Spain are experimenting with new polymers that can regenerate similar to human skin, therefore healing Flat Tyres that has been penetrated by a foreign object. Please read more… http://www.cidetec.es/en/index.aspx

It could be the end of the tyre repairing as we know it, I am all for safety but I am not sure about these developments.

Talbot Express Auto Sleeper turns up with a broken EXHAUST MANIFOLD

We located a second hand exhaust manifold for this Talbot Express

When this vehicle pulled in, the name reminded me of a car that I bought in 1979. I had forgotten the name “Talbot Express” ever existed, but it brought back great memories of my early days as a young mechanic.

Talbot Express

Commer van conversion

I attended the local college in the nearby town of Batley here in West Yorkshire, as an apprentice mechanic, studying to pass my mechanics exam. All the guys in my class worked for different garages from all the Towns in the area. As you can imagine over the course some of us became great friends. One of them worked as an apprentice mechanic at a “Rootes Group Garage”. He worked on models from Hillman the Hunter and the more famous Hillman imp, a competitor for the BMC Minis that were very popular then. He also worked on Humber,Singers,Talbots and Commer vans.

Talbot Express

Talbot Express in for his exhaust blowing

He told me that Talbot was bringing out a new model called the “Horizon”. I was in the market for a new car at the time, and so went on a test drive. I was very impressed and struck a good deal with the salesman, buying a new Light green car. I thought this car was wonderful and my girlfriend at the time (soon to be my wife) and I toured Europe in the car without any problems what so ever. I believe we had the car for ten years before selling it.

The Talbot express auto sleeper that came in for the exhaust manifold fitting was a 1986 model and in pretty good condition. They were made between 1981 and 1993 and were sold in the UK only as Talbots. The same model was sold in other parts of Europe under other marques, they were also known as the Alfa Romeo AR6, and in France the Peugeot J5 and the Citroen C25, and they were the last of any Talbot model to be sold in the UK.

Exhaust manifold was fixed and then an  added bonus of an immaculately restored Commer van conversion

In the same day we also had an added bonus of Commer Van converted into a motor home. The van was in for an MOT test and a few other jobs doing, but I could not resist taking some pictures for the Pellon Tyre blog. The model we had in was a 1974 model but they dropped the “Commer” name a couple of years later in 1976.

Car Servicing Choice-Which One the Main Dealer or the independent?

Motoring

Car Servicing Choice : Dealer or independent?

Motoring

It’s a question most owners of cars that are still under warranty are often confronted with: “Dealer servicing can be very expensive, independent operators can be less so.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Independent or Main Dealer for Car Servicing Choice ?

To be this is a no brainer, but I would say that wouldn’t I?  This has been a long standing argument, and probably always will be. In both sectors of the car servicing market we have good and bad garages. The main dealers do seem to come and go quicker than the independent garages, probably because they are under the wings about by the Car manufacturers that they are a franchise for.

Car Servicing Choice

Car Servicing Choice Part of Unipart independent servicing garage in Halifax UK

Here in Halifax alone we have had several franchise garages that have closed down, and some have re-opened as they connect with other car manufacturing companies.  For example the Skoda garage becomes the Fiat dealership and so on, it happens all the time, some of them don’t appear to last a year or two before they either close down or change hands, that’s the picture here in the UK and I suspect the same will apply to the States.

On the other hand the smaller Independent garage seem to “tough it out” and providing they are honest and keep a good business  will always survive, although I have noticed that there are a few more smaller auto centres here in the North of England are up “for sale”, mainly because the owners are retiring ,”so it say’s in the adds”. In my opinion it may be because they are under a bit of pressure at the moment, due to the economy, I am not sure.

The larger independent garages are joining national groups, to give them a more corporate image. For example I am a Unipart Car Care Centre, and our garages are vetted for quality and workman ship practices with the emphasis on fair prices for the motorists and a better Car Servicing Choice . This gives me satisfaction that I am a local business as well as a Car Garage, keeping my eyes on local competition and trends, whilst at the same time we have nationwide corporate image, sort of “best of both worlds”. To me this formula is a winner and at the moment we are very busy, so the proof is in the pudding, we can give good service and a good Car Servicing Choice to our customers, where the franchised dealers will always struggle to compete on price and service.

Marshal Tyres-A Good Mid-Range Tyre But they are exactly the same as a Kumho tyre

Marshal Tyres are made by Kumho tyres in South Korea

With the huge amount of tyre manufacturer’s names of brands out in the market place it is easy to understand how the average motorist knows what to buy. For example many of the leading brands such as Michelin Tyres UK own lesser known tyre labels that are sold by some companies as Michelin. The brand I am thinking about is Kormoran tyres, which are owned by Michelin tyres, but they are in fact an economy brand but are sold , as I say as Michelin’s.

Another example is a tyre that is made by Continental tyres, the Semperit  tyre , when I used to be a Semperit dealer we used to call them,”Semperit made by Continental” but we were stretching the truth a little, Semperit were  not as good a product as Continental. The complicated list goes on and on and the tyre buying public were no wiser. There were many examples of this in the seventies and Eighties, the large tyre conglomerates buying smaller tyre companies out and using them as a second -cheap economy tyre brand -.

We then started to move onto a more global market with tyre companies starting out in other parts of the World, especially in the Far-East. Countries such as South Korea were starting to produce good quality tyres and had big expansion plans, backed by the USA. One such company was Samyang Tyres who started off making twenty tyres a day in a very primitive plant with backward technology. After  a struggle and huge improvements in the next ten years they were able to acquire the KS mark standard and export tyres to East Asia for the first time.

The Korean government were involved in a massive reconstruction of their country to enable them to make better products to export round the World. The Kumho name was born and money was poured into a brand new plant in Kwangju. The company then made ties with Uniroyal tyres in America and gained their technology, before been able to enter the global market place . The Kumho tyre brand was soon to be recognised all over the World.

Despite the difficulties of the 1974 oil crisis Kumho tyres were to become a brand leader and in 1977 the tyre plant in Songjung was expanded, Kumho became a brand leader after striving to improve the quality of its tyres. In the 80’s and 90’s Kumho went from strength to strength, building new tyre factories in China and Vietnam.

Marshal tyres brand name used in the USA.

The Marshal tyres brand name has always been used for the North American market, as it was thought to have a more tyre user friendly name, but both Marshal and Kumho is exactly the same product. Another tyre brand name is now getting popular in the UK, and is made by Kumho known as Admiral tyres. This brand is known as an economy brand, where the Marshal tyres and Kumho are known as mid-range brands, although Kumho are now coming out on some Mercedes models as original equipment, a great stamp of approval for the Korean tyre makers. These new tyre brands are the ones to beat for price and quality.marshal tyres
