CAR BRAKES- Regularly Checking your Cars Brakes Could Save Your Life ?

You car brakes are essential

Along with your tyres , your car brakes are the most important (and sometimes most neglected) part of your car. I have been guilty of neglecting my brakes when I was a young man. When I was a young mechanic, I borrowed a car from my boss Peter. Peter said that I could but I must check the car brakes and the engine levels before setting off on my journey. I was heading for Blackpool, a seaside resort on the West coast of the UK. On our way home we started to pass through a town called Preston. I was doing the statutory speed of 30 mph and was approaching a pedestrian crossing and would have had to stop, but when I pressed the brake pedal there was nothing there. The pedal went straight to the floor boards. I had to swerve the car to miss a guy walking across the crossing and ended up on the pavement (side-walk). I rapidly. pumped the pedal and managed to get some brakes on the pedal, and the vehicle came to a stop. My  friends and I managed to get the car to a garage filling station a hundred yards down the road and I lifted the bonnet (hood) only to find that the car brakes brake fluid was at zero level in the reservoir. I felt a cold chill down my spine as I remembered what my boss Peter had said the day before we set off We managed to buy some Tesco Brake Fluid and topped up the reservoir. The car brakes pumped about half way up, but luckily the car would stop when I pressed the pedal and we limped home back to Yorkshire UK. A terrifying experience which I vowed would never happen again, lessons were learned and I am going to spell out a few important things about the care of your brakes, for you to understand before you embark on a journey or indeed at any time that you own a car.

Your brakes are a life saver

The British MOT test has been a great step forward towards the safety of our cars and our roads. When your car is having it’s annual MOT test we check everything on that car ( to the  VOSA MOT test specifications). One of the problems of old was the checking of your car brake pipes. Brake pipes connect all your four wheels braking system and the cylinders and brake pedal, and are fixed under the car, exposed to all the elements. They are protected by a special coating of wax-oil or sometimes just grease. Despite all the protection the Corroded Brake Pipes would rust and then start to leak the brake fluid, eventually causing the brakes to fail, similar to what happened to me in Preston.

The MOT test makes sure that all your brake pipes (lines) are in good working order and if not the car will fail the test and the pipes will have to be replaced. If you are not sure about the condition of your brake pipes you can get them checked out at your local Unipart Car Care Centre, free of charge, or the local garage that you use at the moment.

car brakes,brake pipes

Rotted brake pipes found on an MOT test examination

You must always check the brake fluid in the reservoir under your bonnet and top it up if required with the correct fluid. Check your brake pedal it should feel nice and solid, if it goes too far down then have yours checked by a professional garage or mechanic, don’t take risks, you should not have to pump your pedal to get a good brake.

You brake fluid should be changed every so often, this can be done when you have your car serviced, your local garage will be able to ascertain when, by looking it up on his service
computer for your model of car, we use the Autodata system for checking out the fluid change times.

Also you should check your Disc Brakes and Car Brake Pads. These are the parts that constantly wear out and need replacing with Brake Pipe Kits when they get down to a certain thickness. When the pads wear down to the the metal part of the pads, then this is when you can hear a loud grinding noise that frightens the driver to death. Once again if this happens then you should have your car brakes checked by a professional mechanic or your local garage.

Once again if you have your car serviced when you have your annual MOT test then your brakes will be checked and should be fine for the next year to come. If your brake pedal does not feel right or goes further down than it should before you get a brake, then have the car checked out do not continue to drive before the car is checked by an expert.

Toyota’s Prius EV-Refresh, hydrogen fuel cell Batteries on tap for 2015 – Newsday

Newsday Toyota’s Prius EV refresh, hydrogen fuel cell car on tap for 2015 Newsday The next Prius, which is expected in 2015, will include improved batteries and smaller, more powerful electric motors, and will be built on the company’s new global…

eric roberts‘s insight:

This is great news about the Toyota’s Prius EV Hydrogen Batteries

This news is good news for the many motoring fans, who think that the future should be a mix of technologies in the World of cars. In the past twenty years alone we have seen many new developments in the battery World. Apart from modifying the ever present free flow lead acid batteries, we have seen the new battery types such as AGM and GEL batteries cropping up to serve as back up batteries for many industries such as computer back up systems and even for the early computers that we all used. All this new technology was introduced along with need for progress and the appetite from consumers and industry for better and faster electrical equipment.

Toyota's Prius EV

Toyota’s Prius EV

This development has never stopped. Of late we have developed many new types of batteries, that were funded by Governments and large corporations to satisfy the need of the ever expanding electrical and engineering projects whether they were large or small. The next generation of batteries was to be known as the NiMH, Nickel metal hydride batteries, for use the ever expanding miniaturization of personnel computers. These were followed by the invention of the Lithium- Ion batteries, that were invented in the 1990’s for use on the Stealth aircraft in the USA and also used in the space program by NASA, the American space agency.

The latest surge in Toyota’s Prius EV development came when there was a need to save the Earth from greenhouse gases. The main culprit was pollution from fossil fuel driven cars, so the Governments of the World got together and agreed that emissions had to be reduced. This caused a frantic rush for the car makers to come up with an alternative fuel supply to gasoline products. The answer was to be the electric car. The first car makers came up with the Lithium-Ion batteries and are still developing today.

However because these cars will not travel far before the batteries need re-charging, scientists are trying to come up an alternative. One of the companies to do this is Toyota’s Prius EV from Japan. This new type of Toyota’s Prius EV battery is called the Hydrogen-cell battery and in my opinion will be the winner of this technology race in the future.

The car, the Toyota’s Prius EV is expected to be coming onto the market as early as 2015 and already gas stations are been prepared by adding Hydrogen pumps on their forecourts, yet another step forward.

Leeds Festival ends up a Muddy Swamp. (Poorboys needed in quantity) ?

without any special wheel cleaner, certainly some of the cars in the Leeds Festival car parks could have done with this special treatment.Cars covered in mud poorboys to the rescue

Leeds Festival

Cars in a battlefield at Leeds Festival

To those who don’t know Leeds Festival is a huge outdoor Music festival held in the grounds of a country estate called Bramham Park, a few miles past the Yorkshire city of Leeds here in the UK. This year the headline band was “Eminem” and “Green-day”,plus many other bands that I have not heard (being an oldy). The Leeds Festival format is similar to many such festivals held here in the UK. The crowd of mainly teenagers was an estimated 70,000 strong. The kids camped out in well organised camping areas, including one of me daughters Lydia.

We heard nothing from Lydia because the weather was hot and sunny as expected, but on the Friday night the heavens opened up. We still heard nothing thinking that all must be fine, but the following night, the Saturday night, the same happened and the heavens opened up with torrential rain. This time the whole of the Leeds Festival at Bramham Park became a huge swamp, covering every thing with a four inch layer of mud. Sure enough the wife’s phone rang and it was a very wet and muddy Lydia wanting to come home as soon as possible.

As luck would have it, we were staying in York that night and we passed the Leeds Festival area on the way home. When we arrived we could not believe our eyes. The only thing I have ever seen like it was the “World War 1” battle fields in France. We were driving in up to six inch of thick mud and cars were getting stuck all over the place. There were hundred of cars that you could not identify because of the mud. We had a laugh to ourselves because we had just started to sell Poorboy’s cleaning products and boy could some of these cars use some Poorboys Polish. We finally recognised our daughter Lydia, who like all the other kids was barely recognisable because she was covered in the mud.

The cars sure could have used Poorboys Wheel Sealant

The sealant is applied to clean wheels and actually sits between the wheels and forms a barrier between the wheel and any accumulated brake dust, general dirt and grime that the road can throw at them. The Poorboys Wheel Sealant can be applied to a wide range of wheels including chrome wheels, clear coated Car Wheels and even painted wheels along with your normal alloy wheels. When the wheels are treated they form an easy to clean barrier, the wheels can be
cleaned easily and quickly without any special wheel cleaner, certainly some of the cars in the Leeds Festival car parks could have done with this special treatment.

The sealant comes to you in a tub and is of a consistency like a thick paste. Like a lot of Poorboys products the
paste has a distinct smell that is pleasant to the nose and smells even better when the wheels are buffed up. To ensure that the sealant does the best job you can apply the sealant every time you wash your car, making sure that the paste is left a while to ensure that the paste cures correctly, before protecting your wheels.

Another great Poorboys product is Natty’s Paste Wax Blue

This product is made to cater for dark coloured cars and is a wax paste formulated from “carnauba wax”, a natural product used to make the wax. This Poorboys product is especially good at protecting dark coloured cars fro the Sun, so that the cars colour will not fade. This wax also contains ingredients that will protect the cars paint work against any pollution that can be thrown at the car. The wax can be applied with a soft damp cloth or a special foam applicator pad and can be applied on any dry day, even in full Sun on a hot day, without baking onto the cars surface. After application the wax can be buffed off and will not leave any smears or residues . For the best effects the Poorboys Natty’s paste should be added in layers to help give better protection and a much deeper shine, putting the car in first class tip-top condition. Incidentally another bonus from this product is that it has a great smell of “bubble-gum”.

Car Safety Servicing-CAR OWNERS Must Keep Up With it For SAFETY REASONS?

Car servicing will ensure your car is safer to drive.

Car Safety Servicing

These tyres were removed from a BMW that had not had Car Safety Servicing for two years

Please let me go through some basics about your car. Your car no matter what make or type and no matter how much it cost or how much it’s worth, is a highly sophisticated machine, made up from millions of different parts, so that it can take the occupants from A to B in the “safest” possible way.

I use the word”safest,” because at the end of the day that’s what your car is all about, moving us all around, without breaking down or crashing into other car users, because the steering wheel fell off ?or the brakes failed, this is what happens when not Car Safety Servicing at regular intervals.

If you look at the top ten reasons why cars crash in the UK, you will not see mechanical failure as a reason, but if you look at this next link you will see that mechanical failure does not make the “top ten”, but is very close and should be taken into account…

“Not making the list but very important to mention is “Mechanical Failure”. While many car accidents occur due to mechanical failure, the vast majority of mechanical failure accidents are due to poor vehicle maintenance. Car design malfunction account for a very small percentage. Many car owners fail to read their owners manuals which results in poor Car Safety Servicing. They skip important chores such as regular oil changes, brake maintenance, Servicing a Car, tyre inspection and proper tyre inflation, as well as topping up important fluid levels. Keeping these points in mind can make you a better driver, prevent you thousands of pounds or dollars in repair fees or most importantly save your life. Simply put, Stay alert to stay alive”…http://mintinfo.hubpages.com/hub/Top-10-causes-of-Car-Accidents

Car servicing helps ensure that your tyres and tyre pressures are safe.

MOT Testing stations a usually reliable sign that you can trust the garage

According to the website www.safemotorways.co.uk a staggering 164 crashes were caused by under inflated tyres in the last 5 years, and a tyre pressure campaign carried out by the very prestigious  company Michelin across Europe showed that the UK ranked 25th out of 27 countries, the only two to fair worst were Greece and Latvia, this really shows how bad as a country we are when caring for our cars. This survey was done in 2008, but in my opinion and due to the recession things have not improved, this is because of the number of completely “bald”, tyres that we are removing from our customers cars.

Although tyres are a very important part of Car Safety Servicing, many other mechanical parts are also very important the obvious ones are your brakes and the steering. It is all these things that will be picked up by your garage when having your car serviced and on your cars MOT test, (in the UK).

Local Garage ?Do you trust your local garage? How good are they?

Taking your car to your local garage should be a matter of trust.

The local garage I now own will be coming up to its 25 year anniversary in 2014. Believe me I really don’t know where all the time has gone, but it sure has. Many of today’s garage owners are reaching the end of their time as regards the complete everyday running of the business and leave this to a manager or sometimes to one of their family members.

In my case the Halifax garage and tyre bays are managed by by sister in-law Debbie, and our online and battery business is now run by my wife Michelle, I am now concentrating on our web-sites to try generate new business online.

Local Garage

Pellon garage reception with a TV coffee machine and up to date magazines. This is how your local garage should be

local garage(as they used to be), instead of a nice modern Auto-centre, that I had been more familiar with in my previous garages. To me this is the start of creating the trust that you must build between your local garage and the customers. Most people are of a clean and tidy order, and expect the same of us garages when repairing their cars. So a nice clean garage, where the customers can sit in a reception area and watch TV or have a coffee, whilst their car is having a job done to me, is the first stage of gaining the customers trust in your local garage.

When they first enter your nice clean reception, they should be greeted by a happy smiling member of your staff. In my view this should be all your staff. If you have any grumpy or miserable staff working for you, you should get rid of them as in my opinion they will become a liability, and the customers will pick this up and loose trust in them, even your mechanics and technicians should be of a happy and friendly nature.

The next thing is when your customer is greeted, they should be made to feel at ease when dealing with the problem of their car. Try to speak to them on there level and use visual aids to point things out, we use our Autodata system to show diagrams if possible, or show them the actual faulty part under their cars bonnet (hood). This also gives your customer confidence in your local garage and also trust in your garage and staff.

Another step that I took to create trust in your business is join some good trade associations, that can help your garage become more stable and secure in the fact that these trade bodies can increase your garages customer confidence, due to the fact that these trade bodies have to vet your garage premises and business practices in order for you to become a member in the first place.

Adding quality of service will once again add trust between  your customer and your garage.

As with many other Auto-centre owners of long standing, I could go on and on about this subject. Also there is no need to throw a lot of money at it, in most cases a lick of paint would be all that’s required and a nice happy friendly smile from your staff.

One of the best things I ever did was to call around a number of garages and tyre depots in my area, incognito so to speak. I was blown away by the amount of bad service and even bad

Being a member of your local trading standards is always a good sign that it is a local garage that you can trust also a member of Motorcodes

language. This even applied to some of the big boy’s depots, where they spend millions on staff training, but the general picture and standards was appalling. I now know why we have done so well over the years and created so much trust between the garage and our customers.

Yorkshire Tyre Dealers-Give us a Great Day Out at York Races

Not many trips from Yorkshire Tyre Dealers these days (times are hard)

Here we go again ?, back in the 70’s and 80’s, organised trips were all part of the norm for us tyre retailers. Part of the deal when dealing with a tyre manufacturer would be to have some

Yorkshire Tyre Dealers

Goodyear tyres early G800 Grand Prix radials

kind of an organised tour and your name or company name, would be put down for the following year and certain targets would be given to you, say for a certain amount of tyres and for a certain brand that the manufacturers wanted pushing.

For example Pirelli tyres owned another brand called Courier tyres. Pirelli wanted us to sell the Lee brand rather than Pirelli, probably because they owned a retail outlet just down the road that sold the Pirelli brand, (Central tyres are no longer in existence). We were invited to a corporate day out at York race coarse and wanted for nothing. We even had a TV racing pundit to advise us which horse to choose to bet on, (his tips were rubbish and we didn’t win a penny).

Goodyear Car Tyres were the best company when it came to offering it’s Yorkshire tyre dealers trips as a reward for selling performances. I can remember going on a trip to Florida and embarking on a Caribbean cruise. This was practically unknown to a “kid from Dewsbury”, who didn’t have a clue where the Caribbean was never mind go there. Goodyear  sold us the Kelly brand a lesser known tyre company that they had acquired in America and a little later we sold Lee tyres.

Many more trips would come my way over the following years. The tyre companies started to incorporate their complimentary trips with factory visits or tyre testing trips. Vredestein tyres were in my opinion one of the best at this. On one occasion we visited the Vredestein factory in Holland and were treated to a tourists treat of Amsterdam, and on another trip we went to Austria to help test a new tyre that was to be used for SUV type vehicles. This tyre was to be known as the “Vredestein Wintrac Xtreme” and was designed by “Giugiaro Design”, a well known tyre and car designer, who have worked for Vredestein on many occasions.

Different tyre companies offered us many incentives over the years, including yet another cruise in the Caribbean with a subsidiary of Continental , known as Semperit . This was a great trip ,probably one of my best because some of the other participants became life long friends. Over the years these trips have declined for the Yorkshire tyre dealers somewhat. This, in my opinion is due to the increased power of the tyre wholesalers and the decline of the tyre manufacturers supplying the tyre retailers direct.

However things always go round in circles and we are been offered more and more chances, especially with the arrival of independent tyre networks, such as POINT-S that are now offering the Yorkshire tyre dealers to once again buy off the tyre manufacturers, because or there combined buying strength. We are once again able to take advantage of tyre trips, indeed recently our Ryan Linton went on a “race day” trip with Yokohama tyres, and a great day he had too.

More recently a day out at York races with Bond International tyre dealers.

Great day at York races

More recently we experienced a fabulous day out at York Races in Yorkshire UK, by Mr Reg Bond and his Family, Charlie Bond and Lindsey Bond. We were treated like Lords and had a wonderful day, just about breaking even with the betting ?. Reg Bond sure knows how to look after his Yorkshire tyre dealers, and if your are ever invited I would recommend that you should not turn it down, it truly is a great day out.

Most tyre centres keep an excellent stock of tyres.

if you are on a low income budget, so this is where I would start. Sort out which tyres you can afford, this is easy as you can look online for Cheap Tyre Prices these days to see what price bracket your income would come under.

Tyre Expert

To do this all you need a Tyre Expert to check the correct size of your tyres, once you have done this look at the tyre prices that are in your price bracket. You can then either buy online or visit your local Tyre Expert dealer, perhaps through a national group of independent tyre dealers such as Point-S. Once you get there you will not be wasting time having a receptionist go through hundred of products, you can just tell them the price bracket or the brand of tyre that you are looking for and cut to the chase.

Dont forget the beauty about visiting your local Tyre Expert, is that you can feed off their advice? They should be happy to help you with any tyre problem or query that you may have. If they dont want to know then go somewhere else.

Hope this helps in your tyre choiceEric Roberts...www.mot-halifax.co.uk

POORBOY’S Car Detailing products one of the best in the World

Car Detailing products from Poorboys

One of the good things about being in business, is when you come up with a new idea and carry it forward. We at Pellon tyres are very proud about our clean and tidy reception area, where our customers can sit and read a magazine or have a free coffee, whilst they are having their car worked on.

We knew that there was a small area of selling space near the counter, but we wasted it on displaying a few batteries, we had two battery displays in the reception. A few weeks ago my wife Michelle, who is also the company secretary, came up with the idea of selling some car cleaning products to our customers while they were waiting in the reception.

Michelle looked at a few products, and started reading about “Poorboy’s” Car Detailing products , from America. She found a local distributor in the Yorkshire area and contacted them. The products get rave revues on the internet, and before we knew it we had our own Car Detailing display in the reception and are now the local “Poorboy’s” stockist for the Halifax UK area.

We also have the opportunity to sell Poorboy’s products online, but that’s in the future.

eric roberts‘s insight:

Tyre care is something that we keep harping on about

Looking at some of the tyres that we are removing at the moment. So it is important that we do keep on at the motorists. Hence to check their  tyre pressures. Consequently, this article is about the tyre care tips. Pressures and the effect they have on your cars performance.

We should also give advice about what tyres you should be looking to buy.We recommend Apollo and Nokian.

Because they are good quality. Also can be purchased at a reasonable price . As a result, they are cheap mid-range ones but good quality. Another one of my tyre care tips . Therefore, is to keep away from part worns (re-used)  if possible. Because you simply do not know where they have come from. Naturally, before you purchased them.

At a recent care race meeting at Snetterton in Norfolk. I was lucky enough to witness the power and quality of the Avon and Yokohama racing tyre products first hand. I was very impressed by the efficiency and speed that these two  companies were able to change and service the tyres that were fitted onto these racing cars and also the fact that every one that was used in the races were sent back to the relevant factories. This was for inspection, in order to improve the compounds, not only for the next races but much of the information is used in research and development, that goes into the making of the road tyres that we sell to the public, all this is great to see and i cannot wait for the next meeting for me to attend.

 Clever Tyre Care Tips

Avon has been in the motorsport supply business for years now. In fact it was in 1981 that they decided to start producing a whole range of tyres to meet the needs of most styles and types of motorsport. In fact in my opinion it is this commitment to the car racing side of the business that has kept the Avon name alive in the tyre world, and also informed me of some great tyre care tips.

They make the tyres for vehicles as diverse as Rally-cross right up to the British F3 championships. In fact AVON’s great reputation for quality, consistency and innovation has resulted in the company being the leader in control tyre supply. The race meeting that I visited in Snetterton was in fact an F3 championship event and I was able to see how the car teams were so dedicated in looking after the tyres. The teams had small heated tents to warm the tyres up before a race and there was also a guy with a blow gun skimming the tyre tread area to remove small pieces of grit, little things but very important in the races, and again gave me some tyre care tips.
